T-Mobile Broadband Review

How fast is your broadband?

Powered by Mobile Broadband Genie

In a nutshell: T-Mobile isn't the fastest or the cheapest of the 3G mobile broadband networks. However the basic price of £15 per month does include free WiFi Hotspot access and the USB modem or USB modem stick is provided free of charge. The network covers around 85% of the UK population and includes access to around 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.
Best buy: Mobile Broadband Plus (£15 per month); or Mobile Broadband Extra (£30 per month).

T-Mobile offer mobile broadband using either a USB modem or a USB modem stick. Both are compatible with a PC or laptop running Windows XP or Windows Vista, and with an Apple Mac. The USB modem provides a download speed of 1.8 Mbps, and the USB modem stick is compatible with HSDPA offering speeds up to 3.6 Mbps. This makes the T-Mobile service slower than Vodafone and about the same as 3 Mobile.

Price Plan
Data Allowance
Price per month
Mobile broadband Plus
3 Gbytes
£15
Mobile broadband Extra
5 Gbytes
£30

These prices are for a 24 month contract - the prices for a 12 month contract are slightly higher. The price also includes WiFi Hotspot access. The USB modem is free, whilst the cost to buy the USB modem stick ranges from £0 to £19.99, depending on which price plan you choose.

The T-Mobile network currently covers around 85% of the population.

T-Mobile have blocked hotmail over the last few weeks. I called them this evening, and the operator told me that access has been withdrawn as they do not have an agreement with hotmail in place. Performance is ok in most city centres, but outside it does not seem to be so great. I have a friend at work who seems happy with Vodaphone.

No matter what you do the next time i can use my mobile broadband is in 4 days when my next voucher will start - so I am now a 3 mobile broadband customer BOOO to T MOBILE

I am after mobile broadband as i am always on the move (no the tax man isnt after me...yet!) but ive checked the reviews of most providers...Tmobile , 3, and all the reviews are terrible. So im after mobile broadband but according the the reviews they are all horrendous! Does this mean that theres no point buying mobile broadband and i simply cant so my work on the move? we put man on the moon (supposedly) in the 60's and early 70's....got mobile phones and computers that can do just about everything short of making your breakfast and walking the dog...so with the amazing advances of technology...are we incapable of having a roaming mobile broadband technology? Im now as stuck as a sticky insect stuck on a sticky bun! I need mobile broadband but it seems no one can provide me with a service quicker than a tortoise in a 100m hurdles sprint with a customer service that makes forrest gump look like a rocket scientist and as useful as a one-legged policeman! Whats going on? [Editor's comment: "we put man on the moon (supposedly)" - blimey, you are a skeptic! The reality is that a lot of people have poor experiences with mobile broadband. This is partly due to the nature of the beast, i.e. variable coverage depending on where you are, partly due to the technology being in its infancy, and partly due to salespeople making absurd claims for the product. The best thing is to find someone who uses it in the same locations as you, and find out their experiences.]

Terribly slow. Advertised as being "Upto 4mb" speeds. I have never received more than 1MB. Downloads cut out half way through, but still count towards your data transfer limit. T-Mobile rudely rang me at 8:30am to tell me I'd gone over my "3GB fair useage policy". When I explained to them the download cut out, forcing me to RE-DOWNLOAD the entire file, it was like talking to a brick wall. Horrible customer service. Even accused me of stealing at one point. I've never been so offended by a company. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Who ever reads this sight remember that all the postings for reviews are from 2008. TMobile has been putting over 2 million pounds a day into extending and strengthening its network over the last two years and is now....according to people in the industry (YouGov, pc pro and mda to name a few) and well as the millions of satisfied t-mobile customers....the network is consistantly the stronges and widest reaching network in the UK. Check other, more up to date, websites for a more objective and current reflection of just how good t-mobile is today and where it intends to take mobile broadband by the first quarter in 2010.

LOcation:- St Andrews Scotland Provider :- T Mobile Service:- USB mobile Broadband (150k if your lucky). Well heres a few facts for you about T Mobile,They lie to make you buy a package that they say is good and fast, well it was very good for the first 3 months then the stuff hit the fan.I live in St Andrews Scotland and have a t mobile usb broadband stick the usb stick was delivering over 2 megs a second at any time, then the students come back to the town and the population doubles and guess what every student want a usb stick for there lap top,So now instead of 2 or 3 hundred people using mobile broadband theres 2 or 3 thousand and guess what T mobile didnt even increase there bandwidth they just shared the exsisting band width for all users,my speed at times is less than 150kb and this is an excellent signal area according to T mobile and its a 3 g area.Any way the other reason its slow also is that T Mobile dont even own the 3g rights in St Andrews it belongs to the company 3G who let T Mobile have a small peice of there Bandwidth.I spoke to T Mobile and they said it was due to bad weather sometimes and that it was acceptable to wait 5 minutes for an email to download what a lie an email of text should open in a split second.Any Way if your thinking of getting a mobile usb stick in St Andrews go directly to 3 G as they are the only ones with 3g Capability that actually belongs to themselves 02 T mobile all suck a share off 3G.Quiet Frankly dont go to T Mobile because they are full of junk and they will lie threw there teeth to make you take up the contract and when your signed up they couldent give a toss about you as they have you bent over the desk and are felching you dry from everything you have in your bank account. T Mobile might think this is harsh but this is the truth from someone who has been with this service and lives in St Andrews and knowes the real score.

I got my USB mobile broadband stick about 2 months ago, and have had nothing but grief with it...im gutted i signed a 24 month contract for a thing that doesnt work! It only works intermitently... at odd times of the day - mid morning and late night, try using it at lunch or 5pm when people get of workand you have no change. Upload and download speeds plumet and it will take up to 3-4 mins to load a page on hotmail or facebook! when I got it i was assured that I would be able to use it to access BBC Iplayer/ ITV & 4OD to watch tv I missed etc. To start with it seemed to work with these programmes at the odd times when I had a decent download/upload speed, however last night i logged on to Iplayer to watch last weeks episode of the Resturant, only to be told on screen that I couldnt watch it as i was outside of the uk, (i wasnt i was sat in my front room at home in York) the bbc suggested contacting my ISP - so i dialed 150 only to be told that this was becase as of yesterday all of T-mobiles servers had been moved out to Germany, meaning my IP address ws now German and does not qualify me to view sites that require an english IP address.. . to top it all off... Its not due to be fixed for another 4 - 6 weeks MINIMUM!... My Recommendation.. DONT GET ONE!

Got the 3GB package, at first was slow, and it downsamples images on web pages. But worse was to come, it disconnects and just jam's up. Took it back, got a new modem and now the connection is rock solid. Seems the older modems are not so good. There is software you can use to stop it downsampling images on web pages, but it's a pain to have to run it. The speed is pretty poor, upload 200-300 kb/sec and download 20kb/sec. Thats bit's not bytes! Can't really download files as it's too slow and the server your connecting to will probably disconnect you after a while as it's thinks your not there anymore it's that slow. No way you can play online games, and VOIP like skye does not function, there is simply not the bandwidth to do it. My summary, I've bought it so will carr yon using it. It's not good and it's not a replacement for ADSL, once you get over that it's pretty cool to have internet access with out a phone line and anywhere on the move. I'm going to say it's average. But as more people use it the network will improve and the speeds and coverage will improve, so maybe in a year or two it will be worth it as a replacement to ADSL, but for now don't be fooled.

I work in a hospital during the week and live in on-site accommodation which has a wi-fi gateway. I wasn't getting brilliant performance and paying £16 a month for it so when T-Mobile offered this service at £15, I signed up. What a mistake!! I am getting no more than 56kbps (dial-up speeds) - I was getting 256-512kbps with the wi-fi gateway. I was told the signal here was very good and should have no problems. What lies! I rung to arrange a return but was told to take it back to a T-Mobile shop as that was the quickest way. A 20+ mile round-trip to my nearest store is not exactly inspiring but it's better than coughing up £15 a month for 18 months. My advice: DON'T GET ONE, DON'T BELIEVE THEIR LIES.

I just got this bad boy a couple of days ago and am fairly impressed. I've so far only used it at peak times and have been averaging at around 400kb download and 200kb upload. It's so far only dropped out once. For some strange reason It loads youtube and other streaming websites faster that the home computers cabled broadband but downloading files normally sticks me at 40k/sec. I'm hoping for much faster speeds next week when I try it at a non peak time. My only real complaint is the stingy allowance of 3gb although i've heard you can push that to 4gb before they start getting aggressive about the "fair usage policy"

Average at best, awful most of the time. Constant disconnects are my major problem. Downloads are almost a waste of time unless they support pausing/restarting, which many don't, because you're gambling with whether the connection will hold out. I don't need to explain exactly how irritating losing a connection on a 200mb+ file 99% done. It seems a lot of ports are blocked by T-mobile making online gaming, something promised to me by the sales person as reliable, hard work to even get a connection set up properly. Streaming video buffers at a snails pace for the most part and not at all sometimes. Ironically enough, while I was just browsing on another tab the connection cut out for no reason. Expect a lot of this if you're somehow drawn by these somewhat less than stellar reviews

I really wish I had done some actual research before buying this useless piece of plastic in July. There's no point trying to watch videos online unless you like staring at a screen that says 'buffering' for a very long time. Even with HSDPA and signal strength at 97% it drops to 0.2 kbps and then to 3G, or even worse GPRS where you can't do anything, not even email. Trying to attach a file to an email takes so long I have to give up on it. I'm sick of staring at 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' and other error messages. I'm on the £35 a month contract, if anyone knows how to get out of it, please post it on here, I'm desperate! If I happened to lose the USB stick, or if it somehow got damaged and I refused to purchase a replacement one, would that get me out of the contract? Also I wonder if contacting Trading Standards would help, as I signed up believing it was broadband as advertised, but have since discovered that is in fact dial-up?

I use T-Mobile broadband via my phone (LG KU990) which supports HSDPA. Most of my browsing is done using the phone itself however I do use it with my laptop when I travel anywhere or if my broadband is down. The fastest speeds, ironically, tend to be achieved when I'm at home. I run a speed test now and again and the results range from 300kbps up to 1500kps. Even at the slower end, internet browsing seems fairly comfortable. At work, in what is quite a remote business park, the speeds are a little more modest, maybe averaging around 100kbps. The HSDPA signal doesn't appear to be available here so it seems I'm getting the kind of speeds you would associate with a GPRS network. Still, it's fairly comfortable at picking up emails etc. I've used the service on a train with my laptop with varying degrees of success. On the East Coast mainline the signal appears to be quite steady through most of Yorkshires, when you start to go through the less populated areas it doesn't work well at all as would be expected. As you approach London the signal is strong, although there are quite a few tunnels that cause the signal to drop occasionally. This is ofcourse not entirely a problem on the East Coast mainline as National Express offer free wifi on the trains anyway which is normally quite robust. In terms of the usage limit, I was previously on the 'Max' plan but switched the 'Plus' option when I could as I only use maybe 200Mb each month at the most. If you are using this as a complete replacement for your broadband service then the 'Max' option may be necessary. You have to remember that this technology is really in it's infancy so you can't expect it to work 100% of the time with the latest developments of the internet, such as Youtube, which rely on a robust cable or ADSL service.

Much better than orange (constant disconnections) and no nasty sting when you go over your limit (e.g. 3). Haven't tried vodafone but very happy with this so far.

If you want to get out of your contract phone them explain it isn't fit for purpose as it doesn't reach the advertised speed's and you want out, say you're just gonna cancel the direct debit and not paying them a penny and also return the dongle, that's what I'm doing anyway.

Reading the other reviews I can see the frustration, but at the same time I think it's a configuration thing. I was really disappointed when first using this as I had realy difficulty getting a connection, and once connected maintaining that connection. However, on using the dongle on my girlfriend's laptop, it works fine pretty much 100% of the time at high speed. So now I'm investigating what the problem is with mine. My girlfriends laptop is much older than mine and about half the cpu/ram etc. My advice to anyone is to try it on another laptop if possible and start to investigate the settings of your system. [Added by James on 13th Jul 2008: Actually, I retract that statement. Although it runs better on my girlfriends laptop, whenever downloading a file of any size it disconnects and I have to reconnect. I don't see why I'm going to have to get a download manager because of crappy hardware. I'm not going to even try with the t-mobile support as they've been useless in the past. I guess I'm just going to have to fork out another 50quid+ for a better 3g modem. I'm really annoyed that T-Mobile would distribute such a poor standard of hardware.]

The connection will apparently upgrade as the new faster service is rolled out - so check on the t-mobile site for your local speed Eventually much higher speeds are planned ( so it says in my New Scientist) NB IMAGE COMPRESSION IS A PROBLEM BUT ELIMINATED VIA THE T-MOBILE ACCELERATOR DOWNLOAD WHICH WORKS FINE ON MY XP LAPTOP BUT CAUSES NETWORK PROBLEMS ON MY VISTA LAPTOP IF I GO BACK TO MY HOME WIRELESS NETWORK. If it were not for the built in compression (pixelated pictures) and lack of ability to turn it off, I'd give this 6 stars- the additional download/plugin fix is a not entirely satisfactory solution to what is otherwise for me a blisteringly fast service straight out of the packet!!!

Sadly in the last month the service appears to be overloaded and I have had connection problems when good 3g coverage is available. Hopefully this is just temporary. If this improves I would recommend the service as its very cheap and you wont get charged more if you do go over your limit. also the customer Service is superb...lets see if they can sort out the temporary issues.

Expensive rubbish! I am stuck with an 18 month contract paying £29 a month because I wanted a free PCMCIA slot card. I travel between Eastbourne and London and have never had a fast or reliable connection. It just drops out after a while and I end up having to reboot. The signal strength is worse on the coast but I expected that. I bought an ariel booster for the card and even though the signal is better the connection is not. As was said before, can't wait until till the contract ends!

Absolutely unusable for the past 3 months. I've a full-strength 3G signal, but the download speed is often as low as 50kbps, and the connection stalls completely for minutes at a time. T-Mobile tech support are useless.

While T-Mobile's Broadband is buggy at this point in thime this is due the the coverage of their 3G cell sites. This will not be an issue for much longer as they have recntly done a deal with 3 so that they will be able to use their cell siteas and so they wil be able to offer a much impoved service
