Sony Ericsson Z600 Review

Phone rating:

The Sony Ericsson Z600 is a clamshell camera phone with a specification similar to the popular T610. It's not a small phone, and is really quite heavy, weighing in at 110g. On the outside, it's nice to look at, sleek with no external aerial, and available in a wide range of colour schemes. The covers can be easily replaced with interchangeable Style-Up™ covers. The external display is tiny and black and white, but inside is a good quality 65k colour screen with a good resolution. This screen uses TFD technology, which makes it suitable for viewing in sunlit conditions, and is superior to the screen on the T610, although it's not as good as the higher-spec Sony Ericsson phones such as the K700i.

The keypad is perfectly usable, with keys being quite small, but placed a distance apart, so they can be used with relative ease. The joystick seems to be quite robust and responsive. The camera is average for this class of phone, the polyphonic ringtones are of decent quality, and there's a nice MIDI ringtone composer, so you can make your own poly ringtones.

One of the best features of the Z600 is its connectivity. First comes Bluetooth™, enabling the phone to be wirelessly connected with a headset, and there's also a choice of infrared and USB or RS232 cable for connection to a computer. The Z600 will easily sync with both a PC and an Apple.

Overall a decent, but unexciting phone.

Features of the Sony Ericsson Z600 include:

  • Colour internal TFD display (65,536 colours, 128 x 160 pixels)
  • External display (black and white)
  • Integrated digital camera
  • Picture editor
  • Sound recorder
  • Interchangeable Style-Up™ covers
  • 32-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Melody composer (polyphonic)
  • Java™ games: embedded and downloadable
  • SMS, MMS, QuickShare™
  • Predictive text input
  • Joystick
  • E-mail
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS, high-speed data
  • Screensaver
  • Picture phonebook
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth™, infrared, USB, RS232 cable
  • Sync ML, Synchronisation with PC and Apple
  • Personal organiser
  • Vibration alert
  • Triband
  • Size: 90 x 48 x 27 mm
  • Weight: 110g
  • Talktime: 9 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 12 days

I have had this phone for 3 years. I upgraded to a motorola V3 and after using it for a month ditched it and went back to using this phone as I like its keypad, functionality and clear bright screen. If you are a phone geek looking for high spec camera, video etc then its definitely not your kind of think, but if you are looking for a straightforward phone that has good battery life, easy to use functionality, is smart looking and still looks good despite technology updates then this the phone. In terms of 'freezing', I have had other sony phones before and know this can sometimes be a problem. I always just took the battery out and it always seemed . Finally I love clam shell phones because you do not have another about keyboard locking and inadvertently calling people. I am now looking to update but it will only be to another sony ericcson clam shell

I've had this phone for almost three years and it has been totally reliable and even today looks pretty smart. Its also very user friendly but one of the best things about it is the build quality - it feels very sturdy and strong especially when compared to a lot of other clamshell phones - most of which feel flimsy.

I have had my SE Z600 since 2003, and its been the best phone ever. In fact I cannot bring myself to change it. If you just want a phone to make and receive calls, this is the one for you. Its sturdy, reliable, in fact it still looks brand new after all these years! I guess it is a bit bulkier than others, but for me it was worth every penny of what I payed. Has never let me down and I imagine it will serve me for a few more years to come!

I'm a "phone person" who likes music, good quality camera, reliability, loudspeaker, looks stylish, quick bluetooth, video recordin etc. This phone freezes all the time, deletes "my words" from predictive text.. which is ANNOYING! I can comment on the good battery life, i went to Spain for 10 days and forgot my charger and with switching it off every now and again it lasted!! i was amazed. You cnt record, pics are blurry, little memory and u cnt use songs as ringtones.. Buy it if ur not a "phone person" lolio x

Had various phones since 1992 - this is the most irritating to use. Plus points are : robust (doesn't seem to mind being dropped), excellent battery life, excellent signal, good bluetooth reception. Minus points : camera poor, screen visibility poor in sunlight (poor even in normal daylight to be honest), menu usability atrocious (Why use 3 keypresses when 20 would do!). An example of this would be adding a contact to the phone book. Firstly, you cannot add a contact if you opened the phonebook by using the phonebook shortcut (down key). You must, incredibly, close the phonebook, then re-open it from the main menu. You must then downkey to the add contact option, select key to select it, then (even though "name" is already selected) press select to select name option. Now you can type in the name and press ok. Next, press select key to select "home" (even though it's already selected!), type in the number, press ok, then press save, and you're there, LOL. There are many such silly examples. All my previous mobiles (even the ancient early ones) required far fewer keypresses to achieve the various functions. This is really annoying because it is so unnecessary, and it only gets more annoying the longer you use the phone. A few very basic usability tests at SE would have picked up this nonsense. And yep, the phone does freeze occasionally. For some functions, the left hand select key defaults to "yes", for other functions the right hand key is "yes", so stay awake! Also, there is no clear or delete all function. If you want to clear your msgs or call log (and given the low memory you will need to do this), then you must delete one by tedious one. I'm not sure I'd buy an SE phone again.

well this is probably the best phone i have purchased so far...and i dont understand those people who say that this phone freezes all the time because me and my family have got one each and neither of them have ever frozen. To be quite honest i wouldnt let this phone go unless it had broke or i lost it. Excellent reception on the bluetooth also, this makes it so much cheaper to send and receive ringtones, pictures etc. the camera is another good advantage of having this phone, because to me the quality seems great. I also like this phone because of the cool style up covers what you can buy, they make the phone look brand new if you change them regularly and it makes the phone look very fashionable. yes the phone may be a tad big but if you bought one you wouldnt notice. The battery life is very convenient because after the frist charge it can last up to 12 days without recharging. The phone reception/signal is very great aswell because due to its tri-band features it can pick up better signals than some other phones on the market. I also like the way you can change the background for the menus because you can change them to different ones whenever you feel like it. I will mark this mobile phone as outstanding and unique.

Fourthly it is totally reliable with battery, hardness etc. Fifthly the bluetooth and infrared makes the phone better. And for £32 it is an excellent buy for me. I totally recommend this phone to anyone who wants a great, nifty, fashionable and totally reliable then buy this : It is cheap if bought on ebay, as i sai i bought mine for just £32. I have had this phone now for 2 years and very keen on getting a new phone very soon. When this phone came out it looked pretty cool, but is quite clunky especially with newer-generation, smaller clamshells. Over time however, this phone has really irritated me by a) randomly deleting the contents of my text message inbox; b) deleting the words which it has "learnt" when texting (very annoying!); c) freezing / crashing at least once a fortnight; d) switching itself off even though battery is fully charged; e) telling me to reinsert SIM card mid-text message...! The menu structure for selecting a contact to text takes about 2-3 clicks more than it should need. Maybe I'm getting deaf but I just can't hear the phone ring if it is in my pocket, even though the ringer is on full volume. Ring tones (other than the brilliant "old phone" tone) are pretty bad and reminiscent of bad Eurovision tunes... However, on the plus side, the camera is not bad (although the screen is rubbish in sunlight) and the battery life is excellent. Games are good (although one crashes when you get to a certain level), and connectivity is good. All in all though, would not recommend this one at all.

I have had my Sony Z600 for two years now. I love it but it has become very scruffy - when I try to get new covers I was told it is no longer made - seeing these reviews makes me wonder if that is true? I have had a Samsung D500 and hated the busy too colourful menu screen and the way the slider cuts off text messages making you think they are not sent. I went back to my Z600. It freezes occasionally and I agree this is annoying - but I love the click it makes when it opens and closes and how easy it is to read and to text.

Average phone. Bit bulky and does have a tendancy to freeze now and then. Also has limited memory and quickly becomes full. Decent battery life and a varied choice of connectivity, with bluetooth and infrared, although the latter not the easiest to get linked up. Overall if given the choice I wouldn't get one of these again but not the worst phone I have had.

It is a very simple phone comparing to todays other models. My needs are only to make and receive phonecalls by using the bluetooth. I am not interested into MP3 sound or videos. It never "crushed" and is always reliable. people who moan about this model do not really know about phones. The extremely low radiation it emits is its greatest advantage. Even today in 2006 there is no other phone with such a low radiation with bluetooth so for me there is no better (safer) phone. The annoying thing about it is when it comes to charge its battery where there is a not good enough connection. i just make sure it has a clear enough surface with a matchstick!

Poor quality phone. 1) The changeable covers become very loose fairly quikly so i was pulling the back cover off and releasing the battery just getting it out of my pocket. 2) The snap action that opens and closes the clamshell becomes very loose. So loose that it opens enough to answer a call and ends the call all on its own for you while its flapping round in your handbag! 3) It freezes on me all of the time! even if you turn it off while its frozen, when you turn it back on its still frozen and shows you a nice blue screen for five minutes while it pulls itself together! 4)It has not nearly enough memory, no slot for a card to add additional memory and it only holds 30pictures at a push. 5) Basicly only good for about six months until you run out of space for any more pictures it freezes on you all too regularly and it falls to peices.

This is my most favorite phone since I got cell-phones. (quit a lot!) Okay, sometimes it's freezing and than you loose all the words in "my words". I don't mind, whenever it happens I send my Z600 to its trainingschool. ;) The repaircenter puts some new software on the phone and it works like a new one. Although my phone is a few years old, I still get the new software for free. It's done while I wait. The first year the Z600 needed it twice, and last week again. Only one time freezing is enough for me to go and get new software. :0 I also love that there're so many accesoires.

I've had my Z600 for 2 years now, I've dropped it in a bucket of water, I've dropped it on the ground and it still works! It's a robust little thing and I love it. The only problem it has now is that it freezes often if I'm scrolling through call menus or sometimes if I've been texting too much. It gets really annoying as I have to take the battery out just to get it to switch off and then try numerous times to switch it back on again. It doesn't happen that often but enough for it to annoy me. Also the sounds sometimes breaks up and it even disappeared for a week... It's a great wee phone for clumsy people and the camera isn't that bad but you'd be best taking your own camera if you want to take pictures. It's got a good memory for storing messages and names in your phone book. I rate it as good. Great for clumsy people!

Rather than writing a review consisting of the single word "poo", which isn't very helpful, I'll try and decribe my experience using the Z600, which I have had for over a year now. It had the features I wanted, and wasn't too weighty, and it looks cool. I bought it. The camera pics are fine. The night mode isn't very effective, but it's just for snaps at parties etc, so I am happy with the pic quality. Keyboard, menus and connectivity were perfect. Infra red and Bluetooth worked with no problem. A happy chap. But the thing kept freezing on me at least once every couple of weeks, which was tedious and involved the following: Remove battery; Wait 20 seconds; Replace battery; Re-enter "My Words" (the ones that aren't in the built in dictionary, e.g all my friends' names, Colloqial phrases and rude words), which always disappeared after a freeze/battery removal. Then I used it in the rain. Caught in a raging storm without an umbrella, I recieved a call, and stupidly answered it. Only a two minute converstaion, but enough for some water to seep into the inner workings. It died a sudden death for 4 days. I took the battery out (Damn! Have to re-enter "Buggeration" etc...), and left it to dry out. It now works, but the battery life is about one day, the thing freezes more often and the sounds seem muted or work randomly. I thought that things were bad enough that I could get it repaired under warranty, but No. The Sony Ericsson warranty doesn't cover "Liquid Damage", so basically it should come with a warning: "Don't use this phone in the rain." The Sony Ericsson support emails I have got back from them say basically "Go away small person. It rained. Your phone broke. Live with it",which I find astonishing for a brand name like Sony Ericsson. So I won't be buying another phone from them. Cheers, Will

I recently purchased this phone and paid a lowly sum of £40 for it- well worth the money. First of all its a ergonomically fun designed phone with the features that make me want to use it all the time, the first few days I couldn't put it down. There was the odd occasion of it freezing but that was because I was going a little too fast for it to cope, the screen is of good quality-65,000 odd colors isnt to be barked at; exceptionally nice ringtones; good battery life and a phone that can withstand anything(well not everything-but you get the idea) I like this phone as my previous phone was a Motorola V550 which I didn't enjoy using. I have owned my Z600 for well over a year now and I have found the phone to be consistently reliable. Having previously owned a T68i I found the Z600 native to move to with the benefit of bigger buttons to press, and being a clamshell design it prevents the accidental calls to the emergency services as the buttons are protected when it is in your pocket. I have occasionally experienced the phone locking up but this only occurs when I have been a bit too frantic with going though the menus. The phone is strait forward to use and the predictive text is relatively good. Calendar function is indispensable to me. The ease of synchronising the phone with Outlook makes backing up appointments and the phone book totally seamless as this is done automatically as soon as the phone is with in Bluetooth range of my computer. The phone works well with Bluetooth headsets using voice commands. I have also found the battery life to be very good. It is only just starting to show sings or the hard life it has had with me. The paintwork is just starting to scuff and the battery is showing its age. The only trouble I’m having now is that I am looking to upgrade and I can not find any new phones that come up to the same standard for my needs presently on the market.

After owning the phone for just under a year, i can honestly say its a good, robust reliable phone. when it came out it's camera was good quality, but how things change so soon! now the camera is so so, good screen and the polyphonic tones are still ok. But the rest of the phone functions have dated badly, mainly the lack of a radio and ariel strength, and it has a Hell of a slow operating system (Mainly when you are taking photos/loading themes). You have to stop what you are doing every so often to let it catch up! If you want a tough phone with a big keypad and good battery life, then try the Z600...

I am really surprised at the problmes people are having. I used to have this modela and found no problems at all with it. I only upgraded to a K700 because I like to get my money's worth out of O2! My wife has had my Z600 for almost a year and she loves it, so much so I am upgrading to a K750i but she doesn't want my K700! The Z600 has been dropped, thrown about by our litle girl, smeared with mashed potato, hodden under sofa etc and it still works a treat. It's not go the greatest camera granted and it doesn't play videos but as a nice solid phone with out too much fancy stuff I think it's one of the best out there, if you can still find one of course!

This could only be my phone but it seems to take ages to load things, and after taking pictures/adding numbers to phone book it freezes. This isn't a particularly good phone and i would advise against buying it.

Writing this as I say goodbye to my Sony Ericsson. I have really loved certain things about it - the lovely click it makes as it closes, the fact that it has no aerial sticking up, the camera (my 1st camera phone). It is only let down in my opinion by two things (1) it keeps freezing interesting to see how many others have this problem. Also, the memory gets full very quickly. There should be a setting where you can choose not to save sent messages or something, to save you having to empty them out all the time. Lovely looking phone, very clever in terms of connectivity but not completely reliable.

Only problem with it so far is that it will intermittently freeze, requiring battery removal to restart it again. Then again, it is over a year old and i have dropped it numerous times without apparent serius consequences. All-in-all an excellent phone. Lets hope the motorola v547 is as good.

It does everything I want of a phone, including bluetooth to my Palm T3. It feels great and sounds good. Above all it has the 3RD LOWEST SAR SCORE of ANY PHONE IN THE WORLD (0.6!!!!). You can use this phone without frying your brain! The only draw-back is the poor quality of the camera, but since that is only a toy for me I am not worried since I would rather use my real camera, although it is useful in emergencies (like recording the scene of an RTA for insurance purposes!!!). I would really recommend this phone to anyone.

Hey guys how use all going, Well i have had my Sony Ericsson for 1 year and 4 Months. The Z600, is a great size compared to the 3G Phones, Funky and Cool . I used to be a Nokia person now, i have broaden my variety's. For 3 months i had this phone was unbearable, Phone kept on freezing, Recpetion was always low or i had no recpetion at all. The battery life jesus, Always Died, My camera was always playin up, My Flip kept on getting loose, and my Right button didnt work. 3 Months of hell, got it repaired 3 Times, First time got a new phone, Seconds time got it repaired *cough* they didnt do nothing except reinstall everything back, after recieving it back it made me hate Sony Ericsson!!!!. Then i yelled at my Operater and also the Service Centre, and said they will promise to fix it up like it is brand new LOL, a haaa sure after 1 month and 2 weeks, i finally got it back *Apparently they lost my phone *cough* and found it at another B Dealer 50 minutes away from my where i brought the phone lol. I argues threaten to call the Ombudsman. The Ass***** didnt give me a loan phone untill a Month later. And what did they do they gave me a NEW PHONE. Now 11 Months later, I love this phone, Camera is Excellent (at the time when it came out) Graphics are amazing compared to other Nokia Models, Funky features, Games have great quality, but the only problem i get with this phone i guess is mainly it being SLOWWWW!!! (LAGGING), but other then that The Features are Fantastic, Voice Quality is pretty great except the Polyphonic and Trutone Quality distorts when its put up to full ball!!!! I have dropped the phone over 100's of times and has a few scratches but its %100 working. I wouldnt suggest buying this phone due to it being old and it having ALOT OF FAULTS, and i wouldnt pick this model, so my ADVICE DONT BUY IT, their are better FLIP REALIABLE Clamshell Phones. Good and Bad points with this phone. The bad, it freezes alot when its starting up, the camera is rubish at night with nightmode included and also you have to hold the camera on the object for around 5 seconds, if you move, it smudges. Good points, WAP access, talk time, style, tones, menu, messaging. This phone is high on the market and is one of the best sony ericcson have brought out. I really dont understand anyone that rates it "poor". The charger is a bit fidly and fragile but thats only the charger. I like the unusual way it falls. It is an independant phone which i am happy to own.

This is one of the worst flip phones I have used! The angle it opens at means that it does not lay flush against your check and is quite uncomfortable and makes hearing the person at the other end difficult. It is also rather bulky and heavy. I do however like the screen although the quality of the photo's isn't that great. As I bought this phone "sim free", six months ago, it was fairly expensive so I won't be changing for a while - but as soon as I am able to buy a new one I will, but will certainly looking into a new phone in more detail.

First off all i am a bit clumsey and dropped it many times, and let me tell you it is solid as a rock because there is only a few scratches! I think that i would of kept the phone for many years if i didnt get them so cheap. I now have the k700i and i find the joystick to be less easy to use and less responsive. This phone is also good as it was the first phone i have had with bluetooth and it is just amazing. The camara quality is perfectly adequate and as good as many other phones, similar to on the T610 and T630. Overall i would give this phone about 4.7 for quality of build, ease of use and looks. The only thing i found with this phone is that it is a bit heavier than a lot of phones although it has never really affected me on nights out etc. I would highly reccomend this phone and have recently bought one for my younger brother and farther and the o2 shop sell them for 99.99 Although i am sure you can get them cheaper from kelkoo etc. Alex

This phone has the good and bad flaws. First of all, people were making fun of me, telling this is a 'girl' phone. It is not! As mentioned earlier, the phone has crashes. These mostly happen when changing themes. You then have to reset the whole phone (by taking out the battery) and start all over again. And sometimes the phones crashes while going into menu's, but it manages to recuperate from those crashes. The games on the phone suck so deep. I cant believe anyone would want to play them. Anyone who does, doesnt own a game console at home. Ive played better Java games on my previous Nokia 3650, these suck pretty bad. And you cant even delete them all! That is another dissapointment of this phone. The memory gets full very easy - if youre a customizing freak - and i like to customize my phone internally a lot. As mentioned, you cant even delete some of the standard games, as well as standard delivered images in the phone. Very annoying. Last point of annoyment; the camera. This camera is a waste of gadget time. The quality is bad, the features of it are a waste of time, and the worst thing is, the software that comes with it to take the pictures of the camera, into youre PC, doesnt even work! Thanks Sony. Now the good points. While everyone complains about the design, i find this phone to be very chique. Compared to Samsung phones, Sony does create new and daring designs. The screen is crystal clear, and the reception is good. I really like this phone (i REALLY do) i can recommend it to anyone who wants to phone in style, but not to someone who's after phone features or gadgeting. If youre after that, you should try a Symbian OS phone.
