Sony Ericsson W910i Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: Another Sony Ericsson phone that promises much, but fails to deliver in practice. A superslim slide phone with the outstandingly good Walkman 3.0 music player, the W910i also offers an FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera, memory expandable to 4 Gbytes, 3G with HSDPA (super fast 3G) and the cool "shake control". However, many users have reported that their phone freezes or shuts down - we have deducted two stars for this reason. Available in Black or White (new).
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Mobiles.co.uk (Black) or Mobiles.co.uk (White Gold); or on Pay as you Go for £78.25 from Dialaphone (Pink & Grey or Silver).

We're getting fed up of writing good reviews of Sony Ericsson phones, only to be deluged by a flood of user reviews telling us that their phones simply don't work. What good is a phone that's outstanding when it works, but has such poor quality control in its manufacturer that many users receive a dud? The big problem with the W910i is freezing and switching off. Read the user reviews below to appreciate just how common this fault is. If this phone actually worked, it would be fantastic, but if it doesn't it's an expensive lump of plastic. Do you want to take the risk?

The Sony Ericsson W910i is a superslim slide phone, measuring just 12.5mm thick (slimmer than the Samsung D900.) It's a lovely looking phone with a tapered bottom edge and a superslim profile. The W910i wears its Walkman credentials on its sleeve, with music controls featured prominently when the slide is closed. Fortunately SE have given the W910i am easy-to-use circular navigational key, not the dreaded joystick that appears on some of their models. The screen is large, bright and high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) and the menus are clear and simple to navigate. The slide opens smoothly to reveal the full keypad below. Sony Ericsson have got a funny thing going on with keypads at the moment. With each new phone we find a new style of keypad, some with tiny "designer" buttons, others with larger, more conventional ones. The W910i has larger, flatter keys than most, but it still isn't as easy to use as many rival phones. It's high time that SE got their act together with the keypad issue. Anyway, the W910i doesn't have the fastest keypad for texting, but it's not the worst.

The W910i incorporates Sony Ericsson's new "Shake Control" that lets you change to a new random track by giving the phone a flick. The motion sensor also lets you flip between portrait and landscape viewing of photos. Fun, but not life changing.

So, this is a music phone first and foremost, and it ticks all the boxes. Audio quality is excellent as usual, with SE's MegaBass feature to enhance bass frequencies. You can plug in a conventional stereo headset or use a Bluetooth stereo headset if you prefer. The Walkman music player 3.0 is very easy to use, with controls on the front of the phone, and is a fully-featured digital music player. You can create and manage playlists, shuffle songs, equalise, etc, etc. The supplied software lets you transfer music from PC to phone, and rip music from CD's. Storage is limited to 35 Mbytes, so you'll want to add a memory card - the W910i supports cards up to 4 Gbytes. In addition there's an FM radio equipped with RDS.

The camera is rated at a middle-of-the-road 2 megapixels and lacks autofocus, putting it well behind the flagship K850i. But this is a Walkman phone, not a Cyber-Shot, so you pay your money and make your choice. The full phone specs are listed below, but we'll just point out that this is a 3G phone with HSDPA (high speed 3G) and video calling.

The Walkman range is looking quite crowded at the moment, but what makes this one stand out for us is (1) the lightweight superslim design, (2) the outstandingly good Walkman 3.0 music player, and (3) the HSDPA 3G connection for fast music downloads and video calling. If you want a better camera, choose the Sony Ericsson K850i Cyber-Shot phone; if you're not interested in 3G you might prefer the Sony Ericsson W610i; and if the superslim design of the W910i doesn't do it for you, then take a look at the good old W850i. But a final word of warning: many people have experienced faults with their W910i. If you're lucky, or have good phone insurance, then you'll be happy with your W910i. But if you're not one of the lucky ones, this could be an expensive mistake. Sony Ericsson had better wake up soon or they're going to lose market share in a big way!

Now replaced by the Sony Ericsson W595.

Agree with users here. First sony ericsson kept freezing, sent it back, second one kept turning itself off at the most inconvenient times and also grew stupidly hot i had to take out the battery to leave it to cool down. Now going to have my third one... hopefully it will be better... if these faults stopped happening this wouldve been a really good phone! oh and the camera is okay... only in daylight though, at night time its appalling. i dont like the fact that when you exit the media player you have to go to minimise otherwise it shuts off completely. when i use the shake control it also doesnt work sometimes unless i violently shake it.

I've had this phone since mid-Oct and have persisted with it even though on the odd occasion it would switch itself off. But now it won't allow me to send or receive text messages! Operation failed comes up when you try to enter the inbox, outbox etc and sending failed when you attempt to send one. Phone now back with T-mobile for repair. They concluded it was the software on the phone that's at fault after checking all the settings. Leaving me with an old Motorola as a loan replacement phone for a week or 2. Time for Sony to admit theirs serious problems with these phones! Generally the rest of this phone is OK but the camera is poor especially annoying is the fact it doesn't have a flash and you can't help but get your screen covered in fingerprints opening and shutting the slider.

Always had nokia, decided to try a sony for a change, liked the look of the w910 and had it offered as an upgrade on 3. Nearly tried the new LG Viewty,k850 or n95 but fancied a decent music phone rather than a possible 5 mp spankers camera phone. Got it, loved the look of it, had it two weeks, couple of issues, 1-has turned itself off once, and locked up couple of times. rang 3 customer services and they said it was a software issue that i had on my memory card id either downloaded(from thier site ?) or bluetoothed from my previous nokia !!! mmmmm yeah right !!..they got me to reset to factory settings and take memory card out for 24hrs...touch wood this seems to have worked so far ..and secondly..the volume level of the earpiece is low on full volume ..or am i getting old..and when you play the music thro the phone speaker its really tinny and cheap sounding ? Shame it hasnt got a flash..but hey ho...i love the look and the size-weight etc..perhaps in 12 mth nokia will have something that size and looks with a 5mp camera and decent music phone...dreams eh !

Had the phone for nearly six weeks now, and I have started to suffer from the 'red light reset' issue over the last week. I'm on T-Mobile, and am going to send it back to them. I like the phone, but this reset issue isn't on. Other gripes about the phone - it's only got a non-autofocus, non-flash, 2Mp camera, which is a bit naff in comparison to its competitors. The stereo bluetooth is very temperamental and keeps breaking up during playback. The 'shake control' is pointless, the Walkman button shouldn't have been moved and you can't disable the gap between tracks - really annoying if you're listening to mixed music. What is 'Lumines Block Challenge' all about, btw? Two great games, (Marble Madness and V-Rally), then... that? If they can sort out the reset issue, and the stereo bluetooth problem, (travelling on London Underground is frustrating enough without having your music playback intermittently interrupted by pauses and bluetooth issues before cutting out completely when your phone resets itself, and you're packed into a carriage so tightly you can't reach it to turn it back on!) It could really have been a 5-star phone, if they'd wanted it to be, but because of the issues I have with it, listed above, I think I'm being generous with a 4, and 3 if I factored in T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson's customer service departments. It's a really shame.

Very disappointed by this phone. I though that it would be a winner when I bought it, but there's just so many things to hate about this phone. Firstly this phone is very unstable and freezes frequently. Secondly the camera in this phone is terrible, which I am sure all of you know already. Why SE can't release a walkman phone with a good camera is something I don't understand. Thirdly the music playing ability of this phone is disappointing too and is actually slightly below the last phone I had (W850i). And most importantly this phone is overpriced for the extremely marginal improvements over the W850i and W580i (shake control?). I have been a big fan of SE but it is disappointing to see that they are willing to sit back and let Nokia and Samsung overtake them in the music phone market.

Faults aside, this phone is outstanding, it looks amazing and when my 4gb memory card arrives today it will be well worthy of the 5 star rating. Only downside is the camera, which if nothing else needs a flash. However as long as it keeps working, its perfect.

dont get this phone. you will be disapointed with the features. in my opinion the k850i is a much better model, and can be obtained on contract deals for the same cost as the w910i. aside from the general disapointment i felt when using this phone, (and the regret i felt for not getting the k850i) a fault has developed were the phone resets itself constantly. this is a major inconvienince and i have heard is a fault which develops with many w910is. also the w910i i currently have is a replacement, as the first was faulty aswell. dont take the risk of disapointment, buy the k850i

The phone it self looks great, this and the fact it played music and doubled up as a phone realy appealed to me. However,it has started being unpredictable. It wont allow you sometimes to access the walkman function, it occasionally freezes and wont allow you to turn it off, seems only to happen when you put larger memory chips in. 2gb and 4gb memory cards really seem to cause the phone confussion and stops it from functioning. Please tell me anyone who only has 1gb worth of music in their collection!? Most annoying and worryling, I'm not impressed!!!!

I had this phone for a total of 3 days before sending it back. I was excited when i got the phone as it is nicely designed and looks very slick. However, there are a couple things with this phone which cause a problem for me: Loudspeaker - Very low, phones 5-6years ago had better quality sound. Even with megabass etc turned on, and phonecalls on loudspeaker are barely audible. Microphone - While on loudspeaker, people will find it hard to hear you, even on max call volume. Keypad - The keypad for texting is terrible, and letters appear really slowly when texting even whilst using the predictive text. Although this maybe due to the software. Phones switches off - Randomly occurs while the phone is in standby it fully switches off. shake control will not work without holding the walkman button!! and the 2mp camera is not that good, however this is a walkman not camera phone, so that is acceptable. My opinion, wait for w960 if you want a walkman phone.

Recently upgraded to the W910i. First impressions pretty good, phone itself is a nice size, fashionable and has a very clear easy to use system. There are a few gripes with the phone which needs addressing, the claimed 9 hours talk time is false. I used the phone and changed the network setting to GSM mode only and not the 3G mode in the hopes it would help with battery longevity unfortunately this is not the case. In total I did just under 2 hours of talktime and the battery had reached down to 10% My previous phone a Nokia 6280 which I had been using up until now for the last 18 months gets just over 2 hours talk time before going down to a quarter. Considering the Nokia has a claimed 4 hour talk time vs W910i's 9 hour talk time and that fact that its a brand new phone with brand new battery is very misleading! It was pointless to have a handsfree loudspeaker because its not very loud even on the maximum setting and is tinny. For a phone of this caliber you'd expect a better camera on board on par with the K810i for example and I think this lets the phone down. The phone has now developed a fault where by it won't switch on. The phone has been sent back for a replacement, hopefully the same won't happen again. I don't feel this phone deserves the 5 stars given in the review above and is misleading as to how the phone actually performs. The phone I received was used for only 3 days before developing the fault. To have a phone fail after 3 days is not a good phone and certainly isn't worth 5 stars in my book. Which is why along with the other negative things about the phone this deserves an average 2 out of 5 stars from me. I will write a follow up view once the replacement comes and give my final verdict then.

I moved to this after three replacements of an N73, all had software and signal faults. This phone is the best I have had in a very long time. The menus are fast and intuitive - No more press a button and wait for the phone to respond! The walkman is awesome, and with the same style dashboard as the Sony ps3 and psp consoles it's a familiar layout. The shuffle function is a quirky feature you'll soon tire of - Especially when you realise how "special" it makes you look doing it on a bus... However, in adding this function they've opened up the potential to allow a ton of clever software and games. It comes with Marble Madless 3D preinstalled, and it's controlled by tilting the phone around. Clever, and a great talking point. Once again people are slating the camera. If you want a decent camera don't buy a phone that features a 2mpix one. Simple!!! That said, it's really not a bad camera. Battery life is surprisingly good considering it's a walkman phone too. The headphones work by plugging in a small lead with the sony specific connector on one end, and a 3.5mm female jack on the other. Simply plug your choice of headphones into this. The keypad is a bit odd. It has the same feel as the V3. The buttons have a thin rubber-on metal feel and look big - but despite this they're fiddly if you have more than averagely sized fingers. Build quality is very good and overall this phone is outstanding. Many others could learn a lot from this phone. Well done Sony!

I LOVE this phone, it's brilliant, sure the camera isnt the best, but it works, but even the N95 i wouldn't use a replacement to a digital camera so i'm not so bothered. It has superfast internet and Sony Ericsson make a load of stuff available to download to customise it. The only one thing i wish it had would be a direct 3.5mm headphone jack straight in the phone itself, but that's a tiny requirement. Downloaded Bomb Jack game for it - blast from the past - back to my Atari ST days - awesome! Good set of features, high build quality, excellent screen, walkman, fast internet, email, google maps, fully customisable, top quality design. 5*

I expect this is going to be my wonderful 3.6 Mbps HSDPA data speed Sony Ericsson to beat my Motorola V3xx which I already have and satisfy for quite some time with true 3.6 MBPS HSDPA. If it is your expectation, DON'T BUY THIS PHONE. Truly waekness compare to Motorola V3xx that I also own: 1. No HSDPA indicator, only 3G. I am questioning whether this is really HSDPA phone or just another 3G walkman phone. I can't see either it is 1.8 Mbps or 3.6 Mbps HSDPA in their specification. Surprisingly, the PC Suite SW also did't tell that, only UMTS 3G. Unbelievable, event my Chinese HUAWEI HSDPA Modem can have sign whether it is in HSDPA, UMTS or GPRS in their PC Software ? Totally rubbish ! 2. Equalizer in music player. Please check if you own it, because the profile of EQUALIZER always back to NORMAL setting. Everytime you play the WALKMAN player, you must set the EQUALIZER profile everytime to i.e: Mega Bass, Pop, etc. Totally rubbish, it always back to Normal profile. Edward Ling

The problem I have with it is that my last phone was the Samsung D900 and I could hear everyone speak perfectly through the earpiece, but with the W910i I have to really concentrate to hear what the other person is saying, and before you ask, yes I have perfect hearing. Also the speaker is built into the back of the phone which is annoying when you put your phone down on, say a bed and it rings but the sound is muffled. Nice phone but the design flaws make it too annoying to use. Sending back to T-mobile.

Just got the W910i 3 days ago and have to get it replaced tomorrow. I really like the look and feel of the phone but its the software that seems to be letting the SE side down. After using the PC software to transfer my music to the handset i found that the tracks were not available in the walkman media player, although the music was avialable through the my files option on the menu. Despite a call to the Sony Ericsson call centre there seems to be no other way to resolve this other than to exchange the phone. Another thing i noticed was that when i tried to access my photos through the media option the phone randomly switched itself off, this happens every time i try to look at photos this way. Reading other reviews and hearing of similar experiences has me worried that the W910i is overall a flawed handset. Heres hoping that recieving my replacement in two days time will change my mind on that.

The only thing i dislike about this phone is the awkwardness to get to your own files as the MEDIA option wont let you assign tunes as ringtones and you have to go thru file manager which is hidden in applications. I cud moan about the camera but you get what you pay for so i have no point, all in all the phone is a gem its just s shame Sony Ericsson cant bring a wider variety of mobiles out rather than 4-5 of the same wolves in different sheeps clothings.

I bought the N95 on a 3 contract, and I had so much trouble with the Nokia phone, I decided to go back to my favourite manufacture Sony Ericsson. I must say, the W910i is very sleek in design, and the display is the best I have seen on a mobile phone. You cannot fault the quality of the Walkman, I would say it’s better than an iPod. I do like the Accelerometer - auto-rotate Function. Calling quality is out of this world to. I would say, I though S.E would of least put a 2MP auto focus camera on with a flash light. But after all it’s a music phone. So for the outstanding workmanship of the W910i, I am going to give this phone 5 starts, and well deserved. Keep up the good work S.E.
