Sony Ericsson
W900i Review
Phone rating:
Review:
January 2006. Updated June 2009.
The W900i was Sony Ericsson's first 3G phone with
the Walkman branding and was probably the best music player
phone released at the time of this review (January 2006). It's not
a SmartPhone, so you can't install additional software on it, but
that makes it easier to use than the Nokia
N91, it's closest rival.
The key feature of the W900i is its music playing
ability, so we're going to focus on that first. The W900i has a
media player that supports MP3 and AAC formats. Mega Bass
enhances bass frequencies for a better overall music experience.
We have to say that the audio quality is superb (and that applies
to phone calls too). An essential feature of any decent MP3 device
is memory, and the W900i has bags of that! It's internal memory
is a whopping 470 Mbytes, and in addition it supports both Memory
Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo memory cards which
are available in sizes of up to 2 GBytes - as much as an iPod Nano.
Usefully, when you connect the phone to a PC with a USB cable, the
phone memory appears on the PC screen as a mass storage device,
so you can easily copy MP3 tracks from the PC to the phone. Software
for ripping CD's is supplied.
Sony Ericsson's PlayNow software enables you
to download music samples (via 3G) and listen to them before you
buy - a nice feature if you're into downloading MP3 tracks directly,
rather than placing them onto the phone from your PC. There's also
an FM radio supplied as a snap-on accessory. This also serves as
a remote control for the phone's music player. This is perhaps the
weakest feature of the phone - the radio seems to be an aftherthought,
for example, you can't see which station you're listening to. Finally,
there's a useful "music mode" (sometimes called "flight
mode") which lets you use the phone's music player functions
with the cell phone functionality turned off.
The imaging features of the phone are also good.
The W900i has a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, similar to the
camera that first appeared on the Sony
Ericsson K750i. There's also a video recorder of course, and
video playback is good with fast (30 frames/second) and smooth playback,
thanks to the dedicated video card. The display is a 262k colour
TFT screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
The
W900i is a very user-friendly device, with an icon-driven desktop,
menu shortcuts, dedicated camera and internet keys and a large central
navigation key. Most of the phone's functions can be accessed when
the phone is in "closed" mode, with the phone swinging
open to reveal the full keypad when required. The Walkman
playlist functionality is very user-friendly: far better than most
MP3 player phones. There is also a voice control feature.
In terms of connectivity to other devices, the W900i
offers wireless Bluetooth and infra-red, plus USB. It also
has Fast Port - a system connector that enables faster data transfer
from phone to PC and PC to phone. It also serves as a charging port.
The battery life of the W900i is good, especially
when you consider that it's a 3G phone. If you switch the 3G off,
you can extend the battery life further, and you can put it into
music mode if you just want to listen to music.
There is one single downside to the W900i (apart
from its cost of course!) and that is its sheer weight. It's not
particularly large, but it weighs as much as the very first 3G phones
- nearly as much as the Sony Ericsson
P910i PDA/phone. However, if you don't mind carrying a brick
in your pocket, this is still a good music phone, although as noted
there's no built-in radio.
Features of the Sony Ericsson W900i include:
- 3G video calling and streaming
- Media player
- FM radio
- 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 8x digital
zoom and camera light
- Video camera
- VideoDJ video editing software
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
- Sound recorder
- Speakerphone
- Voice controls
- Ringtones: MP3/AAC format
- MusicDJ software for creating your own
polyphonic ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant
Messaging, E-mail
- 3D Java games: embedded & downloadable
- Wallpaper, screensaver & themes
- Picture phonebook
- Personal organiser functions plus File Manager
- XHTML web browser (supports CSS & JavaScript)
- WAP 2.0, GPRS, HSCSD,
GSM Modem, 3G
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, infra-red, Fast
Port
- Memory: 470 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Duo/Memory
Stick PRO Duo
- Vibration alert
- Triband plus 3G (UMTS)
- Size: 109 x 24 x 49 mm
- Weight: 148g
- Talktime: 2 hours (3G) - 8 hours (2G)
- Video calling: 1.5 hours
- Battery standby: 300 hours (3G) - 370 hours
(2G)

I just got a w900i from my brother as a present, and as far as im concerned
its the best phone ive ever had (and ive had a lot of phones) most of
the other reviewers wold agree with me but some of them say the phone
is very bad, and that they have had alot of problems, well i havent
had any problems with mine so far the only downside i have noticed is
that the battery life doesent last aslong as i would like it to, but
all you do is just charge it up whenever you have time to

Good points; Memory- the internal memory is awesome, 450+MB with expandable
to 2GB with memory card. Music- Can hold a mass amount of music with
enough for moe with memory card, sounds brilliant! Camera- One of the
best camera phones around, 2MP with auto focus. Video- No more patchy
videos, clear as day with choice of size, amazing! Phone- if you are
a sony mobile person, this is a must have, usual and great features.
Bad points; Size- a hulk of a phone, very heavy to carry around and
to open, requires 2 hands sometimes. Speed- Sometimes take a while to
go from one menu to another. Connectivity- With dics2phone software,
it looks easy, but is a pain when putting music on the phone, best bet
is to get a memory card to use instead!

This phone absolutely rocks! I've always been a Sony Ericsson user and
I used to have the k700i before this. I actually waited for the k800i
to come out here in the country hoping against hope that the price of
the W900i drops but unfortunately the k800i came out at a price lower.
Still I got this phone due to the fact that I like music a lot and it's
just too cumbersome to bring along an I-Pod along with a phone. Plus,
I travel a lot in my job and having to carry several charger can be
a bit of a hassle. With this, I have a phone, a music player and digital
camera (for everyday-on-the-spot-stolen-moments snapshots) in one. The
Java software is easy to use and understand, plus synchronizing with
my PC is a cinch due to the very user friendly software. Downside is
the design and the battery. If you don't mind carrying a remote control
look-a-like and if you don't mind charging the phone everynight before
going to sleep, then this phone is for you.

I just received my phone today, from Vodafone. So far I've been very
impressed with the camera and the walkman functions. Before I used the
Sony Ericsson Z600 and the jump is amazing. Because the Z600 was quite
large and heavy I don't notice much difference but I have quite big
hands so this is ideal for me. Besides I don't consider 146 gramms heavy!
It also came with some free speakers and they are amazing, the sound
quality is very impressive! I'm quite glad I used this site to find
my next phone, I looked up a review for my last phone and it was only
rated Good, but I thought it was excellent. So now I have a phone rated
outstanding, so I'll probably keep it forever!

I got this phone a couple of days ago and so far it has been fantastic.
People have complained about the size and weight, but Ive found the
size is an advantage, its not to big to put in your pocket, the weight
helps to keep your hands steady when taking photos/video but its still
not that heavy. It is only large when open, but you only need to open
it when using the keypad, everything else can be done with it closed.
The MP3 player is brilliant, its easy to use and has been fully intergrated
into the phone. My I-pod is now redundant. It has outstanding audio
quality, especially when using the supplied headphones. Also the desktop
speakers that are supplied free are of intimidating quality for thier
size. The camera is brilliant, the pictures look as good as if not better
than my 4mega pixel camera, which is now also redundant. The video feature
is also great, it records 30fps so there is no jerking in the video
when played back. It has all the features and more than you could ever
want and they are all easy to use. My previous phone was Nokia and I
was worried I would find the transition hard, but its actually more
logical to use than a Nokia. Another complaint Ive heard is the battery
life is poor, but ive been using it constantly for 2 days and have found
it lasts long enough. You can listen to music for hours, take a bunch
of photos, make several calls and still have half your battery left
at the end of the day. Over all this phone does everything very well
and is brilliantly designed. Infact the only fault I have found is the
radio wont store radio stations, but with 2gb of music thats not an
issue. If you want a phone that can replace your MP3 player, digital
camera and still be the best phone you will have ever used go for the
W900, you wont regret it. Oh yes, it looks amazing too !

I think this is an excellent phone. Loads of memory, and can hold big
memory cards. Good camera, although the zoom is not that good, but what
can you expect on a camera phone - it is much much better than most!!
Excellent sound quality, great graphics and excellent size screen! Very
nice looking phone which is great fun to use. There is only one downside
on it, and that is the battery life - it doesn't last for long. I have
already had to buy a new battery. It has got everything you need on
it and more. I can't wait to see what else SE will be bringing out in
the near future. I really recommend this. PS: Sina from UK - You asked
how you can receive picture messages - sounds like you need to ring
your phone provider and ask them to send you across the settings for
MMS messages - I had to do the same.

Superb mobile. Bough it contract with a firm called vodafone. The phone
has a brilliant music player, lovely big screen and a browser to die
for. 3G capabilities give it a great touch with television and 3d games.
Built in memory is impressive with 490mb. I would recommend this phone,
better than my mums n80 and my old k750i. The only place though I would
get this phone is vodafone, as they have the best license for mobile

in my pocket with the headphones under my jacket or t shirt so they
dont get pulled but still they just pop out, drives me mad. also ive
found that the phone likes to turn it self off whenever it feels like
it. my battery doesnt seem to last very long and if the key lock is
on but the phone comes slightly open in your pocket then off goes the
lock and on comes (in my case) vodafone live or the video call service.so
its actually starting to cost me money now!!!! mp3 player is great and
the camera is second to none.the space on this phone is really good
so you dont have to keep deleting things to take on new stuff but it

I am a phone addict and always want to own the best phone on the market.
In my opinion the Sony Ericsson W900i, is the best phone on the market.
This phone is the Creme de la Creme, and by far the most impressive.
All the functions are impressive especially the 3g function, ie the
video dj. It can do so much and im still trying to learn how to operate
it properly. however I would welcome improvements with a slightly bigger
screen to enable bigger pictures when watching tv. and would also like
to see a less bulky phone. Nevertheless, I'm sure I am the envy of everyone
I know as they all want to get a W9001 after seeing my phone. Im very
proud of being a Sony Ericsson W900i owner. Well done Sony Ericsson!!

I believe this phone 2 be wholley amazing, with myself just recieving
it last week, iv been entranced by its overall performance and features.
For 1 the camera is a dream 2 use, only rivaled so far by the powerful
Nokia n90 , with such fiddly matters as thingerprint marks totally irrelivant
2 the performance of this model. i was prevously contemplating purchasing
the Nokia N91, but thought other wise due 2 the athetics (looks) and
ablitiy 2 use instantly, unlike the nokias complex interface. Also regardless
of the battery matter, (who cares if u need overnight charging) i can
see no faults with my phone, aside from its size which im completly
at ease with. Also it seems the nokia n91 loads its vast arrey of soungs
onto its gallery, meaning a long time for loading, with is a completey
unjustified wait.I would rate this phone as betwen the nokia n90-91,
what with the camera beating the n91, and its mp functions beating that
of the n91 its the general best of both worlds. So i ultimatly recomd
this phone 2 all and about, with a few minor minor flaws, which are
totally unnoticable when you play your first mp3 track and sigh with
contented bliss.

I had this phone for a few months now and i gotta say its the best phone
on the market at present. Well first its very well built, it fell down
about 10 steps and nothing happened to it, as well as few times on the
road, and not a thing happened to it. It basically has everythin u would
want out of a phone. Camera just splended. It has a face converter programme
which is really fun and cool. the only problem i can think off is the
battery life, don`t be fooled when they tell u about the battry life
and how good it is, because what they say is only true when u buy the
lithium battry not the one supplied with it. Apart from that this phone
is the one, greatly recommeneded. cheers

I just got my phone just 1 week as of now and I am amazed with the functions.
I was a nokia user before and I just tried to change phone because of
the need to get a postpaid line that had a reasonable priced phone.
It was the SE T310, it was the first SE and I did not have any disappointments
at all, I started to look for a more high end SE, there was the T610,
then the T630, the Z600 and finally I got the S700i. Since then I did
not look back for a Nokia phone, the S700i was my bestfriend, especially
when my wife gave birth with our first born, non-stop pictures taken
and the music and radio was a plus, it was very useful at work too.
Then the W900i came out, well the price was really expensive. I thought
of buying instead the K608i, it was also a 3G phone but I could not
help thinking the W900i and eventually sold the K608i and bought the
W900i. Until now, I am very happy I bought it, no regrets, the phone
is an all in one machine, upgrading the memory stick duo to 2GB, th
ere is the all usefullness of the phone, listen to music anywhere(home,
car and etc), play games, watch a movie to kill time, a planner, my
remote control for the PC,the transfer of data from PC is great, the
3G is fast and clear calls all the time. I have not seen all the function,
but it is an amaazing phone, very very happy with it. It is a good invested
phone.

in the past but this wipes the floor with all of them, love the camera,
picture quality is awesome & the number of colours the tft screen has
is over 200k more than most top of the range PDA's, Had no hang-ups
or problems with the software either on the phone or on my pc and connectability
is fast, steady and flawless. The only problem I've had so far is a
screechy whine that comes out of the earpiece when my missus rings me,
but this usually stops when she breathes in. Apart from that.... 6 stars

I've had the phone about 3 weeks now and am very happy with it so far.
I have added the 2gb memory upgrade which is definately an essential
imo, (get it from ebay for £35 or so) and at present have over 400 music
tracks, 20 odd games, 3 full length films ( Kill Bill, Bulletproof Monk
etc) and around 6 small vids plus a load of pics on the phone and its
still works fine. So its a great allrounder. Mine is on vodaphone and
the vodaphone live thing is good for getting free footie updates but
the other "add-ons" packages which you get for £5 a month or more are
a bit weak tbh. I got the entertainment one and its ok but not great.
Cannot receive email at the moment but can send them out alright so
that works but thats not easy to work out either. I finally worked out
how to download movies into the phone and ringtones etc ( but not those
mega exspensive one you see advertised- mine are all from ebay! Paid
£6 for 2 DVDS of compressed stuff- well worth it as just one downloaded
game from vodaphone costs C. £5) but it took me hours of trial and error
using the disc and booklet SE send you as the instructions are rubbish
and i'm not very computer savvie. Oh- and theres no games already loaded-
just trials which you can then pay for. Music player is very good, camera
excellent, vid still got a prob working it for longer than 15 secs though
i guess thats for sms purposes, radio is fine bit of a faff with the
wires though. I got these little SE box speakers which are quite good
so id recomend those. I've bought a crystal case for the phone and an
orange silicon skin for it- don't bother with the silicon as its rubbish-
the crystal case protector is a good investment though, as is a decent
screen protector film ( yes u guessed- all off ebay). Battery life is
ok - i recharge every other day but i am fiddling around with it a lot!
Call quality excellent, design is excellent, the swivel thing noise
is sooo cool and it beats the cr8p out of any other phone around- and
i spent ages looking at the rest! Def a 5, but to improve i'd make it

6 hours after it was fully charged, it completely died on me. Now it
will not start up under any circumstances even when charger connected.
The software refused to work on my laptop, installed on my PC ok (which
recognised that the phone had been connected), but the software insisted
there was no device connected! The bluetooth connection connection kept
dropping in the few days i was able to get the phone to work. Ringing

but now that i have had this for a little over a week i have changed
my mind & this is so much better! I agree with everything that everyone
else has put here in reguards to mp3 & camra quailty but the only gripe
is that its white! Black dust from trousers gets everywhere that you
wouldnt realise on a black, or atleast, darker phone. But that its still
deserves more then 5 stars just fro teh features & ease of use. Shame

a camera, get this! the camera is 2.0 megapixels and seems like a 3!
the walkman is good aswell, its just not as loud as the SE W550, but
it is still good. its very robust even it feels like its breaking when
you slide it open... the screen is as good as any nokia and the video
clips are brill. i dont even know how long you can record for but it
is looooooooooooooooooooong. you can still have the walkman playing
when your playing games ect. if your in a band and recording loud music
then the mic overloads abit but when you put it on your comp its fine.
some people are saying its slow but its just as fast as a nokia. the
internet connection is fast too. you can video call people with the
camera at the front and even take pictures with it. my mate has the
W800i and it is the same camera but mine seems to be alot better and
clearer. its just when you want to quickly record something, you have
to chane the shoot mode from MMS to normal because MMS recording is
only 7 seconds long so change it to normal. its the best phone i've

the way of the awesome swivel design, and it makes a very cool 'swoosh'

all excellent. i bought a whit headphone adaptor on ebay for 2 quid

i wanted it all white. i dont care for radio and cant see how some people

a samsung and sony ericsson junkie but im now totally devoted to S.E
after this one. i love my phones to have alot of technology and gadgets
on them otherwise i get bored and this phone is exactly what i like, for
starters the camera is the best i have used and there is plenty of things
to play round with on the camera features, and the flash is so bright, captures
anything in even the most darkest of rooms.then there is the unusual
feature of it being a swivel phone which i think is great and makes
it stand out from all the candybar and slider phones of today.I got
mine in white and i haven't decided on whether i like that or would
prefer in black but then you dont see many white phones about so thats
what convinces me a little more. The mp3 player is fab with the headphones
having the most unbelievable sound, lovely and rich with plenty of bass,i've
never really made use of the mp3 feature before as much as i should
have and now i cant stop, its better than ipod.there is a decent amount
of internal memory to be getting on wiv until you have the money to
buy a big ger one, transferral of files very easy and straight forward.the
screen is clear and sharp and still clearly visible in strong sunlight, texting
a dream. the battery isn't as long as other S.E's and thats not even
with 3g coverage but its not bad either, lasts about three full days
for me,so overall i think everyone should have one of these babies and
stand out from the crowd and so what if its a bit bigger than other
phones it makes up for it in features,go on buy one you know you want

I recently bought this phone, after having the Toshiba T803, and I must
say this phone is absolutely amazing. The MP3 player is superb; I would
say it’s on par to an iPod, if not better. Taking pictures with
the camera is also amazing, and I like the idea, that you are able to
make your own video clips in full screen. Watching mobile TV is also
great, the sound is also listenable. The only draw back is the battery
life. I have had several Mobiles, and I must say this is the best phone
I’ve ever had; it even beats the Sharp 903. I have noticed that

I've just upgraded from the Sony Ericsson V800 to the W900i, and have
to say I'm highly impressed with it. It's first time I've stuck with
a manufacturer for a sucessive year, and I'm glad I have. On paper it
may not look to much different from the V800, but the camera is much
improved, the screen quality is excellent. The Walkman feature is superb
and sound quality is drastically better. The only real downside to the
music player is the length of the headphone cable and the inability
to plug the headphones directly into the phone. The phone itself seems
to run so much faster than previous Sony Ericssons, none of the jolty
screen problems of previous models. The 3G/GPRS connection is much quicker,
and the browser looks a lot better. So, overall, yes it's a weighty
device, but look at the amount they've packed into it. A decent walkman,
a decent camera, mobile internet and email to a satisfactory level for
the needs of most. Oh and it works really well for phone calls too.

Okay first impressions it's got to go back, it's big, heavy and the
swivel method to open it is pants. Please Ericsson make it a slide phone.
Mine is white as I was unable to get it in black, on the contract I
wanted, just to tight I guess. In white it has to be the gayest phone
I have seen, everyone who looks at it comments on what a carp phone
it looks like. I guess this is good as it's less likely to be stolen
and because of its weight they wouldn't get far. This is why I am only
going to give the phone 4 stars. Once you get beyond the White, swivel
opening, brick you soon realise what a fantastic phone it is. I have
had numerous phones over the years like most people and can say the
functionality of this phone is fantastic, it is so easy to use my mum
would be able to work it. The camera takes perfect pictures to grace
any picture frame and just check out the MP3 player superb with an option
to upgrade the memory to 2 gig, gives you ample music who needs an Ipod
HA! The screen is great and if you like to keep up with various sporting
events you can watch in wide screen, I love it for the football results.
If you are unsure just give it time, you will learn to love it.

I got this phone today and it is amazing, but mine seems to have a major
fault. No one else seems to have this problem so I'm assuming it is
a fault with my handset, but I would like to establish this first before
sending it back. When I am scrolling through my contacts, as if I'm
about to make a call, I cannot use the keypad to go to each letter.
Instead, I have to scroll all the way through the entire list before
finding the contact I want. And it's the same when sending a text. The
text side of things isn't so bad, as the people I text regularly are
stored in the recent contact list, but when I'm calling someone it's
a real pain. Everything else is near-perfect, except the battery life,
but I expected that. It's a 3G phone but I probably won't even use it
for video-calls, since I don't even know anyone who owns a 3G phone.
I just love the Walkman series - I have a W800i as well. I would love
to give this phone 5 stars, but am unable to until I find out if mine
is faulty or not. Unfortunately, I bought it SIM-free as well at a whopping
£430, so I've got no network support, I can only return the handset
for a replacement but not a refund. If this is part of the phone's design,
I'm afraid I shall be selling mine immediately and going back to my
trusty W800i until the W810i is released. I'd appreciate it if someone
could help me out with this please. Anyone willing can also contact
me direct on ellen.suffolk@virgin.net. Thanks!

what i have to say; 5 stars for the screen, camera, memory/space, mp3
player, 2megapix camera, picture and video quality... 30fps!!! no lag!,
swivel action is sophisticated, the software that came with it that
allows u to easily transfer files, convert music from CDs straight to
ur phone, infrared, bluetooth and USB connectivity are very useful to
me and my other gadgets. i'm also happy that i stil came with a speakerphone.
as well as the audio connector, i can easily connect it to my altec
lansing atp3 and enjoy the Walkman amplified!!! what i am not very happy
with are: 1.battery = anything that i do that requires the screen consumes
a lot of power, esp that my country is the "text" or "sms" capital of
the world, i need longer lasting battery! but if i use the mp3 player
[phone mode] while screen is shut, i can go for hours... long enough
til i wake up. brightness is currently at 80%, stil not happy with d
consumption 2. CABLES = theres a bunch of different cables for every
function; charger, usb, headset, i'd like to have just one cable for
all three so that i can play mp3 or use the phone [headset] while charging.
the size, as what most would complain about, is just fine with me, i
feel it around me, and it reminds me when it's not. the 'brick' shape
makes it look big, but its actually not, nokia 6600 is even bigger.

This is a very good phone, it has some advantages and disadvantages,
it has a very good mp3 player and video playback, you will have to convert
your films to MP4 format and the appropiate resolution and bitrate.
It has a very good camera, which will enable you to take pictures that
are easy to take and very clear, the inbuilt graphic card really does
make a difference to the video you watch, at 30 frames per second you
cant go wrong. it has the internet to download what you want, it also
has sky TV if you are willing to pay 5 pound per month. the disadvantage
is that for some ppl is the size for me its a gd thing so that i can
feel and know where it is, and price for me this phone cost 340 pound
just over the w800i, i got a very good deal for this phone from vodaphone,
and with inbuilt 500 mb it has all my fav song on it i since i dont
have a lot in the first place it all fits well, and and an extension
memory card pro duo can also have an extra 2 gig,if you are willing
to spent more money, unlike the N91 which already has 4 gig inbuilt
some ppl dont need al that space and is therefore a waste if you need
only a gig or two then with the w900i you can buy a 2 gig memory card,
1 more disadvantage is that the radio is external nad not inbuilt in
the phone and at the momnet i have no idea on how to save radio stations
on to it, but over all its a 5star definatly

As someone whose been a heavy mobile user since 1993 getting through
at least 2 models a year, I have never been really satisfied with any
model. However, I can state that this is the greatest phone I have yet
used - in fact to call it merely a 'phone' does it an injustice; it's
a superb MP3 player (Why no Altrac support though?) and above average
camera - but most reviewers have overlookedthe video quality. No longer
do we get irritating compresseion artifacts and pathetic framerates
that make every clip look like badly copied CCTV footage. The quality
is scary - on a level with the first generation digital camcorders.
I have a 2GB card and could easily shoot a small film of near broadcast
quality. Video calls actually work too! The GoForce 4800 graphics accelerator
is a reveltion and although the device has some minor irritations in
everyday use, it really is a little piece of the future sitting in my
hand. It is the phone equivilent of the Sony PSP. And it looks soooo
cool in the dark with the orange ring glowing like a cats anus after
a Wiskers vindaloo..... And don't be fooled by the dummy handsets you
handle in the shops - the actual phone is much much sturdier and the
keypad is fast and responsive. It seems that the W900i (codenamed 'Sakura'
in development) is a taste of things to come from SE. Certainly at the
time of writing, it is the best phone on the market and a challange
to the other makers. It may not be as thin as the RazR but you dont

a Sony Ericsson w800i and tried to get one but was tied to a contract
with Vodafone so had to wait. I'm so glad I did because now I've got
my mitts on the best phone EVER!! The one thing I didn't like about
the w800i was it's weight, it's far too light, I like things to be heavy,
maybe it's just me but if something's weighty (Not bulky) it just seems
to be of a higher quality... you know it means business and this phone
does just that. Within an hour of owning it I'd managed to change the
wallpaper, download music, change the default ringtone to an mp3 of
my choice and put all my phone numbers on it. It's so easy and straightforward.
People have commented about it's size but I've no problem at all with
it - I got it to replace a Sharp GX30 and the size difference is minimal,
as is the weight. I've only had this phone for one day but that's time
enough to be able to state that this phone is absolutely fantastic and
I love it! This is my fifth mobile and for features, build quality,
camera and walkman there is simply nothing else to touch it. Now everyone

Positive aspects: + Solidly built + Excellent screen quality + Good
quality camera images + Walkman function very similar to iPod + Call
quality good + Bluetooth works well with my car (calls + phonebook)
+ Intuitive menu layout + Works well with 3G - mobile TV is fun to watch
on this device. Not so positive: - PC Software painful to install and
a little unreliable (even on XP) - You have to hold the phone the wrong
way up when you use the swivel function - Charger/USB connector cover
on the phone is fiddly to use - Radio function was an afterthought,
it should've been built into the phone. You therefore have another cable
and widget dangling from the phone. - A2GP profile not supported, therefore
you cannot use bluetooth headphones directly - Lock key only works from
the top menu - You'll be forever wiping fingerprint marks off the screen/case
! Overall this is a good phone with some excellent features. It is however
let down in a few areas described above. If the PC software was improved,
A2GP supported and the radio incorporated into the handset or scrapped,
then I would've given this phone an excellent rating. As it is it is
not quite there as the ultimate phone but a very good attempt nonetheless.

The W900i really is a superb piece of kit. 500Mb onboard memory, brilliant
music player, 2MP camera with video, 3G, bluetooth and so many other
features I’d be here all day telling you them all! Ok, firstly
the walkman. It’s great! The sound quality is very impressive
and the equalizer is a really nice touch that makes the player as a
whole seem really thought through and not just a cheap add on. The pc
software for adding the files works really well and surprisingly quickly
too, as does all the other software. The camera is excellent. Compared
to the v3 I upgraded from – well, there is no comparison. There
are some really nice features such as the spot photometry and different
effects you can apply. I was amazed by the speed of the web browser,
it really is very impressive. All the usual functions such as MMS, SMS
and voice calls work as you would hope (call quality is superb) and
without fuss. Oh, and it has a really, really bright light!! ;-) Negatives?
M y particular handset wouldn’t power up the radio so had to be
replaced but the new one has worked fine. It is a shame the radio isn’t
onboard and have RDS, but it’s not a big thing. I’ve invested
in an ICE-30 case to protect it which I would strongly recommend (don’t
get the sport one as it doesn’t have a hole in the bottom for
the headset) as the case seems to scratch easily. Ok, it is a bit big,
and everyone that see’s it jokes about it, but after seeing what
it does are blown away and want one. It is expensive, but the way I
look at from my personal view is that a 1MB shuffle is around £90 and
non expandable. A 1MB card costs around £50 now and I got this on an
upgrade (after extensive haggling) for £45. So I got a 1.5MB walkman,
superb camera and a generally brilliant phone for only a fiver more
than an I-pod shuffle - plus it is one less thing to carry around. You

Battery life is rubbish. Phone lock unlocks when it's in your pocket.
Screen doesn't dim down when you make a call. Hence the rubbish battery
life. Pic quality excellent esp. if you add a flash. Looks nice but
mines gone back due to various error messages. Currently looking for
something else.

i shall try answer a few questions for Pete Archer from England. the
remote control wire has a clip where u attach it to ure shirt or where
u find it easier when accessing the remote control. 2 yes it is a draw
back but i know all the sations be heart only two i listen too radio
1 at 99.5 mhz and southerfm 135.5 mhz so that is personall if ppl wanna
really find knowing the names of station a big deal. 3 volume is quite
load especially with its amazing equilizer the phone has, makes my rammstein
music very heavy indeed :) 4.going back to the album list you should
press the UP button not BACK button. 5.ure phone switching off while
sending a message is weird and i would sent it back to the shop where
u got it from to have it replaced even when it switches off while it
is locked is also wierd. i hope i answered ure question and by the way
the phone is very good beside it size which i like cose i know where
it is at all time

Pros: The most full-featured, powerful phone avaliable on the market
to date - in two stunningly stylish colors (I love it in White). MP3
Player (no DRM BS with this one - just drag and drop in explorer or
use the Disc2Phone software bundled), FM radio, Mpeg4 video playback
(at 320x240, ie. iPod video res), excellent 2MP camera with autofocus
(even better if you get the Flash addon for it), intuitive menus, large
bright screen and tri-band GSM/3G capability makes this a winner. An
inbuilt 470mb, memory stick pro duo slot and upgradable phone firmware
means you can take advantage of 4gb and 8gb memory stick pro duo's when
they come out this year, while allowing you to store lots of music/video/pictures.
In a sense, the W900i is an evolution of the previous S700i. Oh, did
I mention it looks really sexy, esp in white? Cons: Bulkiness of phone
may be a bit off-putting, no lenses cover like in the S700i (which I
remedied by putting on a screen protector), no 3.5mm stereo jack on
phone itself (you need to use the provided adapter), Walkman playlist
functionality a little fiddly, no ATRAC support (why not sony?). Also
at the moment, a little costly Overall: 9/10

capture are excellent-seems a bit large but then my last phone was a

connection is good-not broadband speed but still ok. Does anyone know
if you can transfer mpeg's from your pc onto this phone?-cant find any

I have owned nokias since the the start but i got so angry waiting for
the release of the N90. Waiting almost six months through Vodafone i
decided this was the clear choice it really is the best phone out. Plus
one great feature i have never had with nokia is the fact that you can
lock you phone so if you loose it or it gets stolen your contents are
safe. When entering a different sim the code is needed....excellent.

Its a great phone, a little bit big for my liking but nevertheless.
Bluetooth is excellent and very fast and so is the camera quality and
it can hold lots of mp3 compared to my old motorola e550. I recommend
the phone if you want a great quality and dont care about the size the
only reason iam givin it 4 is because of its size.

Wow.....what can I say - easily the best phone I have ever had. Massive
470MB internal memory plus a memory slot (cards up to 2 gig available),
superb 2MP camera, 3G so fast browsing and very clear video calling/streaming,
superb sound quality on the MP3 walkman and you can use MP3 files as
message and ringtones. Basically the phone has everything you could
possibly want and more. I have the white model and I like it becuase
it's distincitve....there are not many white handsets on the market.
I personally like the swivel action when the phone opens and closes
- it may be a little bulky for some people, but that really doesn't
bother me. All in all, absolutely top drawer....highly recommended.

I've had my w900i for 2 weeks now, enough time to write some proper
feedback about it. I was upgrading from an s700i, so i'm glad it has
the same excellent screen. First up the positives. Battery life is great
after a few charges. you can watch a feature length movie of 2+ hours,
and listen to the walkman for another 6 hours, and still have 1/3rd
battery left. Movie quality on this 320x240 screen is excellent, and
the phone supports high bitrates for a sharp picture. Sound quality
is great also, although i'm not too keen on the earphones it comes with.
Luckily there's a 3.5mm headphone jack to use any earphones you like.
The walkman player supports playlists and as many mp3s as you can fit
on it. The 512MB memory can be expanded up to 4.5GB currently. The sms/mms/email
all works well, no lost messages or errors. Java is quite fast, especially
in 3D, and it has java filesystem support. Call quality is great as
with every other SE phone. bluetooth and usb also work very well, the
phone supports USB2.0 for very fast file transfers. The camera is really
quite good, less noise than the w800 one, and video is recorded at 320x240
a nd 30fps, giving very smooth and high quality recordings. Spot geometry,
a camera feature not in the w800, makes a welcome return in the w900i.
I haven't been able to test video calling or other 3G features as my
sim card is plain GSM. There are only a few negatives. Firstly my w900i
crashed for 2 days with a white screen, and i had to flash it with a
new firmware to repair it. You can't transfer files without the phone
switching to non-phone mode. It's also a little large, but i had an
s700 beforehand which is the same size so i don't notice it. Guess the
size of it is the price for all the features. That's about it though,
it has every feature you want in a phone/mp3player/movieplayer/camera.
Very happy with mine. :)

This is an outstanding phone. I got it today and haven't been bored
with its looks nor features at all. Its packed with interesting features
and looks fantastic. Granted it may not be the craziest design ever
but i think it has style. Its slightly hard to get used to at first
since i had a nokia before and the layout is different, but i found
my way round after about half and hour of use. As far as the 3G goes,
sony have a great support website for setting this up (WAP). Aswell
as Multimedia Messsaging. Its a great step up from my previous Nokia
6260. MP3s on the 6260 were impossible to download. On the W900i its
simple. It would have been nice for a "3.5mm jack" to listen to music
on other systems but that is my only complaint.

My opinion is that this phone is let down by the Walkman. There are
a few problems with it: 1. The remote control hangs down from the headphones
and you can't support it easily. When walking along, the weight of it
tends to pull the earpiece out of your ear. This is a bad design. 2.
When using the radio, the station name is not displayed either on the
remote or on the phone. I believe the station name is displayed on the
W800i. 3. There may be a problem with my particular phone, but I have
found that even at full volume, the sound is not very loud through the
headphones. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has this problem.
4. I also find it annoying that when in "Now Playing" and you want to
go back a screen, it takes you right back to the main Walkman menu (i.e.
where you select Artists, Playlists, etc). I would have expected it
to go back to the album list that I'm currently playing. One more annoying
thing, and again maybe this is a fault with my phone, sometimes when
I'm sending a message and I close the phone during this operation, the
phone switches itself off! I have also found that it has switched itself
off a couple of times when in my pocket (with lock on and fully charged).
Very annoying as I've missed some calls because of that. Apart from
all that, it's good but I'll be contacting Sony Ericsson about all this
to see what they say.
