Sony Ericsson W880i Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A supersexy, superslim 3G Walkman phone, the W880i features Sony's award-winning Walkman music player with enough memory for around 250 songs, 3G video calling and a 2 megapixel camera. At just 9.4mm thick, the W880i is the slimmest and lightest 3G phone available, however it misses a couple of features available on other Walkman phones - a radio and a camera flash - and some people may find the keypad a bit fiddly.
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Mobiles.co.uk (Black Clearance).

Review: March 2007.

Whoa! What have Sony Ericsson been up to? They've put their top-selling Walkman phone on a crash diet, given it a stainless steel casing and bundled in a 1 Gbyte memory card and a stereo headset. The Sony Ericsson W880i is a stunning phone that is a contender for the best Walkman phone so far. It's also the thinnest and lightest 3G phone released in the UK (just 9.4 mm thick and 71g in weight). Yet it's an incredibly well featured music phone. This phone is surely destined to be a winner!

The W880i is a classic-shaped phone that's relatively large but flat. The keypad is reasonably well designed, avoiding the problem that the W850i slide phone had with the top row of keys being hard to access, but the keys are too small and separated. The W880i uses a 5-way scroll key rather than the clumsy joystick used on some of its other phones. Ergonomically we'd give it 3 out of 5. The stainless steel casing gives the phone a real quality feeling though, and the phone looks great both in black or silver.

Like the W850i, this is a 3G phone, with the benefits of 3G video calling, music & video streaming and fast downloads. The camera is 2 megapixels with a digital zoom and a video recording function. This is not as good as the K800i's camera, and lacks a flash, but it's typical for high-end 3G phones and is fine for casual use. The display is a high quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and 240 x 320 pixels.

The music player is the feature that's at the heart of the W880i, and as you'd expect it's a really excellent player that can match an iPod in music quality. The music player can be accessed by a single click, and you can play, rewind, fast forward, equalise, shuffle tracks and create playlists. Sony's MegaBass™ feature gives added woomph when playing music from the built-in loudspeaker, but for the best quality audio you need to listen via a pair of good headphones. A set of good quality headphones are included in the sales package, and the phone is also compatible with Bluetooth stereo headphones. There are some extra gadgets included in the music department. TrackID™ lets you identify a song (name, artist and album) from a few seconds recording, e.g. a song that you hear on the radio or in a club. The PlayNow™ download service lets you buy and download MP3 ringtones from your phone. The phone is supplied with a 1 Gbyte memory card, so there's lots of room for storing music tracks - almost 250 tracks.

Most types of connectivity are supported. Bluetooth lets you connect your phone to another phone, a PC, a Bluetooth stereo headset, or a car handsfree kit. USB and Fast Port are supported too. The phone is also equipped for the internet age with a web browser, support for RSS feeds and a picture blogging function. 3G lets you access the internet whilst simultaneously making a call, and the internet is "always-on". Flight mode lets you use the music, imaging and organiser functions of the phone with mobile telephony switched off.

Does the W880i lack miss out on anything? It's an obvious question, since the size of the phone is about half that of the W810i Walkman phone. There are a few things. First, the camera is not as good as that on the W810i, but is about the same as that of the W850i, although there's no flash. Fair enough, as this is primarily a music phone and not an all-rounder like the K-series phones. Secondly, the screen is smaller than on some other Sony Ericsson phones. Thirdly there's no radio, and this might be a disappointment to some readers. If you want an FM radio, then the W810i or W850i are the phones for you. Finally, the keys are too small and many people will find difficulty using the keypad, especially for texting.

The Sony Ericsson W880i may not have everything, but it has a heck of a lot. And what it has most of is style. The other Walkman phones, whilst being fantastic phones to use, are shall we say a bit dull to look at. The W880i is still brick-shaped, but it's a very nice-looking brick and one that many people will be very happy to have in their pocket. However, on balance we still prefer the W810i which has the advantages of a better keypad, superior camera (with flash), and a radio.

Read all the reviews before ordering, wish I had listened to the minority. I sat down in the shop and messed about with it for 10mins, sent a few texts etc and it seemed ok its not until you use it for an hour or so that the problem with the small keys come to light. The actual functions are excellent its just that the buttons are too small. Any bloke with normal sized fingers will struggle to use it. I am sending it back and excanging for Nokia 6300, which with a larger mem card will do everything the 880 does only better.

I had this phone a little while ago, but returned it for 2 reasons: 1) The buttons were seriously small for the fingers of a bananaman, and 2) The battery life wasn't really what a superhero has come to expect, especially if it should run out whilst fighting crime in some far flung corner of our fair Earth. Having said that, however, I did like the phone feature wise, it had a good interface and was indeed pleasing to the eye. Even the banana eye..! And it was designed with music in mind, so no surprise that it should rock in that particular arena. Camera was just average. So - if you have small fingers and are often close to power supplies, it's ya baby... Otherwise, try b4 ya buy! And I should say, I'm fairly dextrous with ma digits, from spendin many a year playin with ma special banana. It's all part of the job! Peace all.

Originally had the P990i which did everything but my mate hade the W880i which did impress me so I had to have one. The phone is sleek, stylish and very easy to use. The keys are fine, no trouble. Yes there's no flash which would be nice, also auto focus would be great but I have to remind myself that this is a music phone mainly and it does that to a tee. The headphones are rubbish which come with it so I have got the HBH-DS970 bluetooth headset for commuting etc and the HPM-85 headset for other times there both quality headsets and compliment the phone perfectly. Oh and track ID is excellent. Probably upgrade to a 2GB stick as 1gig won't last me too long. In a nut shell if you like music on a phone with a few extra nice features then you can't get much better than this.... for now until a better one is released. ;)

You need this phone in your life!!! I have never been happier with a phone. Ive upgraded from the w800i and if you're anything like me fellow w800i's will be wondering whether or not to go for the w810i or spend a lil extra for the w880i. GET THE W880i. Seriously though folks this phone is immense. I was worried about the sleek design and general smallness and how it would feel in my hand - my fears were out of the window as soon as i held it in my hands for the first time, it fits fine and ive had no probs with the raised buttons. It is basically the w800i with a few more features , less weight and (unfortunately) no fm radio. Still this phone is awesome, it has to be seen to be believed!!

I think this is a terrific phone. It's ultra-slim, ultra-small, ultra light and ultra cool. I know some people think that the keypad is too small, but because the keys are well raised it makes them easy to find. My one criticism is that I've not yet found a way to put album art on the music tracks. This is frustrating for a Walkman phone.

I think the phone looks amazing, style and colour (black/orange) is quality and personally I think it's one of the best looking phones out there. The battery for me is great, I listened to music to and from York which took about 3 hours in total and the battery didn't drop once. But I was disappointed with the main part of the phone....the music. I've read it's great and sounds just as good as an iPod which I've never listened to but if it does then an iPod isn't very good. The sound is really tiny. My step dad has a Nokia N80 and when we compared the sound the Nokia won hands down which sounded like a HiFi, crystal clear rather than not being able to hear individual instruments being played. I'm not that keen on the headphones either because they don't sit in my ears very well and keep popping out, no matter which size rubber bit I put on. Good phone but lacks something in the music department which is what it's meant for. I gave it a 4 because I love the size and looks etc but if I was just to go off the music what it's designed for them I would give it a 2

I've always been a Nokia fanboy but this could very well be the phone which tempts me to stay with Sony Ericsson! The first thing you notice is the size - it's not that much bigger than an iPod nano. When you pull this out of your pocket, people will notice. I dabbled with the W810i in the past so I knew how good the camera can be - please ignore any reviews which say it's not very good, the picture quality *is* as good as the w810i, w800i and the k750i. The main difference being there's no autofocus or flash but the emphasis in this phone is on music - and it delivers. The built-in speaker is very tinny so mp3 ringtones won't be the best but plug the headphones in, crank up the megabass and the sound is awesome. The keys take a bit of getting used to but after while they become easy to use. Another improvement is the lack of joystick - SE have now replaced it with a 5-way button. The menu is the usual easy-to-use standard and such features as TrackID are a great touch. That itself saves a fortune on Shazam! The phone fits nicely in your hand and even better in your pocket - trust me, you'll have a few "has it fallen out of my pocket" moments because it's so small and light. The software which comes with it is not so good however - Disc2phone, the programme you use to transfer music to the phone only detects the phone when it feels like, regardless of whether you use bluetooth or USB. Still, an excellent phone. Whilst the camera isn't as good as the k800i, which one do you think people will be more impressed with when you show them? True it doesn't have a radio which is a bit of a let-down - had SE included one then I guess they would have compromised the phone's main selling point - its size. So lack of radio, poor CD software and tinny external speaker are what stops me from giving the W880i a full 5 stars - but it gets a very very high 4 instead.

The camera is adequate in good lighting. the size and weight are perfect also I personally find the keys very easy to use as they remind me of the Nokia N91 I had a few months ago. Well, for starters I really love this phone!!! Anyway it has extremely good camera although it misses a flash but i don`t mind that since if I want to take a high quality i`ll use my digital camera. Next, design is perfect, slim and yet very durable and it really gives you a feeling that it`s solid and that it`s not some piece of thin wood which you can split in half. Display is a bit smaller of the usual SE but in 1 week of heaving this phone you won`t notice it anymore since you will be blinded with all of his outstanding features. Next, Walkman 2.0 is really great it follows the success of the same on SE W850 and track ID also something that you have to be amazed with. All in all great phone, really easy to use and I would suggest it to anyone who wants a great Walkman phone with great features. I would just like to say that I have a phone for a month now and i haven`t experienced any freezing at all, except for one time, while writing a text message, when i just bought the phone but i heaven`t finished his first charging yet!!!!!so i suggest BUY BUY BUY!!!!!!!!

I nearly took the n95 until I was told it had 17 registered faults that couldnt and wouldnt be repaired by nokia. Already have 300 songs stored on it and still have space!! The buttons are small but easy to get used to and the menu is very easy to navigate. Can't feel it in the pocket which may cause undue panic on occasions. The only problem is that it has frozen or taken a considerable time to exit applications on at least 3 occasions, so I hope this is only a teething problem. If music is more important than camera go for this. If camera more important then go for the k810i (out next month). Also highly recommend the 7390 for all female users. Right lets cut to the chase here, the W880i is a great phone & it will do very nicely at phone shops up & down the land but theres a few things you should be aware of: 1)Even though its a walkman phone its sound quality, whilst being superb, is no better than the early walkman phones. 2) No flash for the camera. Ok get a digital camera, but, so many people now want a phone to replace their mp3 and camera that a flash would of been useful and while were at it, theres no FM radio which could have been easily implemented. All in all the phone is an achievement of sorts, clarity of calls is top notch, music playback is superb and design is stunning, but it in the end it falls just short of the dizzy heights of the W810i

I love this phone, it has all that i need on it and more, the first and formost reason i got this phone was for the music player which is outstanding although the volume button is hard to find its the button on the right side of the phone, but then fiddling with a new phone is the great part of getting a new phone as you find things over days that you never knew you had, i have never had a sony ericsson before usually sticking to samsungs ie d500 then d600, i never liked the d600 as there was not much difference in the internals of that phone to the d500 and also the shape of it, i like square phones which is another reason why i liked this phone, a definate square phone! the only downside i can see is the buttons which are very small, smaller than tic-tac's but reminds me of them, however after a few days fiddling you get used to them, this phone has everythng you can think of on it and works very well, i love it and am very glad i made the change.

WOOHOO! Got my first Sony ericsson phone...ever. I've pretty much tried all the brands, samsung being the latest (D600), and I have to say i instantly fell in love with this phone as soon as i switched it on! Okay, it's not perfect (i have given up on trying to find the perfect phone, as it turns out you can't physically get a tiny phone on witch the screen is huge, that is u until the iphone is released). So yeah, the camera isn't the best, and the lack of flash is a bit of a pain, not because you can't get pics at night (who takes pics at night in a pitch black envirronment with their phone anyway!?) but to use as a convenient torch. The sim card slot is a bit fiddly too, that is compared to my d600, but THAT'S IT! Honestly, it's sooooo thin, sooooo cool, soooooo user friendly, and sooooo fun! I got it to work as a remote control with my mac (and I'm sure it's just as easy with a pc), the tuner/metronome/guitar chord application is heavenly, the entire user interface is soooo nice. What I like the most is that with free softwares found on the net, it's soooo easy to create an entirely customised skin for the interface. It hasn't crashed a single time (believe me i put it to the test!), and for those people who like to surf the net on their phone (I am still to meet anyone who actually dose that on other than a PDA or blackberry), it's 3G!!! Basically, i receieved it yesterday, and i haven't been able to put it down. AM IN LOVE!!! Now i can understand that it might not be suitable for everybody, seeing as it's a walkman phone, but whatever your need, I strongly recommend Sony ericsson just for the cool and interface! If you're due an upgrade in the next coule of months and are not too hot about the w880i, keep an eye out for the K810i! p.s.: sod the chavs and their "loud phone speakers", get a pair of headphones. We don't care about what you listen to, we don't want to hear it, so quit breaking our b***s with it!

I had a Samsung D500 and was ever since waiting for the "perfect" phone. Now, I got the W880i and I believe I have found it among all available phones at the moments. Most noticable for me after several Nokia/Samsung/Siemens experiences: Great software, intuitive and quite intelligent, e.g. you never lose anything if you push the wrong button. I do like all features it carries a lot, therefore to me right now the perfect phone and the other positive comments are spot on. What does it take to make it real perfect to me (Sony, listen up)? Cut it 1cm shorter (maybe remove front camera for video phone, who uses this??), improve buttons (yes, Virginia, they are hard to use), add auto focus to the camera and a flash light, make plugs smaller (when using it as a Walkman, this thing sticks out on the side and suddenly you can't put it easily in your pocket anymore! Too much gear around it at the moment! Look how the iPod Nano is designed!), add a software where you can also manage and store SMS and addresses independently from Outlook (couldn't find it so far), include radio. If required, I believe you could add a max. of 0.3cm to the thickness of the phone. One minor software fix: You should be able to disable SMS preview, because when the phone lies around and you receive a SMS, everyone can see right away from who it is plus the first words... just "One new message" would do... BOTTOM-LINE: Best phone around if you are looking for a light and handy phone, without wanting to sacrifice key features!

Had this phone a week now and I think it is excellent. Yes the buttons are small but the thought that has gone into the design is evident in that after a couple of days they are really easy to operate. You don't need tiny hands! The menus are intuitive and having a 1GB sony memory stick is top rate. The brushed aluminium case feels good in the hand and even better in your pocket due to its tiny bulk. A lot of thought has gone into this phone and i would highly recommend it.

I recently upgraded to this phone and overall, it is a decent handset. Good camera, bright screen and very light, although the fact that it is so thin becomes a worry at times. The good points about this handset is that it is easy to use and the mass amount of supplied memory is very handy. It feels excellent to hold and the sound quality through the supplied headphones is superb. A few things let this phone down though. Firstly, there is no light. So those that use their phone as a torch have no chance with this. Secondly, texting becomes a nuisance at times, due to the small, fiddly buttons. There is also a "menu" button (above the 'c' button) that was pout there to take you pback to the menu in an instant. NOT a good idea when you accidentally push it whilst writing a text or trying to go back a page whilst browsing the net - i couldn't count the number of times i had to start any sequence all over again. The walkman software is relatively good, although to alter a playlist, you are forced to start at the beginning of the software and work through it all again. I actually returned this phone as signal was very poor and it had the knack of turning itself off at the slightest knock on anything. It's a good phone, but once the novelty wears thin and you just want a telephone to communicate, the problems begin

It has all of the features I would ever need - I rarely use my phone as a camera and I now do not need to take out my ipod nano (which with a rubber cover is about the same size) for day to day use. The only downside is that sometimes I pat my pocket looking for a phone and can't feel it, resulting in embarrassing searching of the house when I missed the phone in my pocket.

The Menu's are much more stylish, the keypad is tiny but its absolutely fantastic - at first I thought it would be a problem, but it is by far the best keypad I've ever used. It comes with a 1GB memory stick which is good of Sony Ericsson to throw it in. Internet Access, RSS feeds and E-Mails are really easy to use, and very fast it has to be said. The "Track ID" feature does actually work really well. I've only tried it 3 times, but its been spot on each time. So far I can't fault anything about the W880i. The keys, although small, are very well spaced out & are very responsive. The menu navigation directional button is an absolute joy. I have found the menu system employed by Sony Ericsson to be quite intuitive & probably the best out there, I have had many phones over the past five years phones including models from sharp, Nokia & Samsung & none of them compare to Sony Ericsson. Connectivity to me PC was easy using the software provided. The music capabilities & the size of the phone was the real draw for me & I have to say I have not been let down. I got the phone in the flame black colour. My only criticism of the phone is a lack of an FM radio which I know have been prevalent in other models made by Sony Ericsson over the past few years.
