Sony
Ericsson W760i Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The W760i is a music phone, with the bonus
of GPS satellite navigation. It also has a lot of fun features like
SensMe (plays music that matches your mood), Shake Control and Wii-style
games. The camera isn't that great, but the other features are good.
However, it's another Sony Ericsson lemon: the list of problems
including freezing, shutting down and dropping calls. Available
in a choice of colours: Fancy Red, Intense Black & Rocky Silver.
Best buy:
*Free* with half-price line rental from Dialaphone
(Silver).
The Sony Ericsson W760i is an interesting phone.
It's a Walkman phone, and has a new style of stereo speakers mounted
on the front, for playing your music loud, plus loads of music-related
features. Yet it also comes with GPS satellite navigation and Google
Maps. It's also quite a physical phone. Shake the phone to play
the next song. Tilt the phone Wii-style to play games. It's a curious
combination and perhaps this explains why few are appearing in the
shops.
Let's describe what the phone does well. It does
music well. Really, Sony Ericsson have packed
every music-related feature that they have into this phone. It has
the latest generation of Walkman player, with features such as album
art and SensMe (automatically creates playlists based on your mood.)
It has MegaBass (does what the same suggests), TrackID (finds out
the name & artist of a track), PlayNow (music download service),
and Shake Control so that you can change tracks with a flick of
the wrist (cool if not exactly life-changing.) It has only 40 Mbytes
built-in memory, which is enough for around 10 MP3's, but you can
expand this to 1 GB with a Memory Stick Micro card. There's a built-in
Fm radio too. The W760i uses stereo widening, coupled with front
mounted speakers to give good sound reproduction. You can listen
on conventional headphones or a wireless Bluetooth headset.
So it clearly does music well. There's also a camera,
which is of limited quality, being 3.2 megapixels with no autofocus
or flash. And the surprise bonus feature of GPS navigation. We don't
know exactly why SE have included this feature in a phone that is
so obviously music-orientated. But we're not complaining! You can
use the GPS to navigate around town, using Google Maps or Wayfinder
Navigation to show you the way. With GPS also present on the C702
mid-range Cyber-Shot phone too, it looks like 2008 will be the
year when GPS becomes commonplace on mobiles. And a good thing too!
So we're left slightly puzzled at the combination
of features that the W760i includes. It's great for music, with
an average-ish camera, but with GPS included. Battery life seems
to be good, especially if you switch to 2G. Physically the phone
looks good, with a better keypad than many recent Sony Ericssons.
Some people are complaining that their W760i didn't include mapping
software, so SE need to sort that issue out pretty quickly. But
the big problem with the W760i is its appalling reliability. It
regularly freezes, shuts itself down or drops calls. The alarm seems
to never work. The menus are slow. Basically, despite all the lovely
features and the good lucks, we urge you not to buy this phone.
Consider the Sony Ericsson C702,
which also has GPS but a better camera, or if you want a Walkman
phone, try the new Sony Ericsson
W595.

But lag is a very distinct problem; if you're not patient enough

This is a fantastic phone. Yes I had a small software glitch at
first but sorted it out by getting SE updating software to overwrite
the software. The geotagging works great and outdoor photos look
good for the phone. I got my W760i on O2 and as standard O2 has
removed Google Maps and Wayfinder but these can easily be got from
SE or Google but I have found 2 great GPS apps MGMaps and Trekbuddy

- and now lost everything apart from standard settings!!! I am most
upset because I had a photo on it of my best friend from a couple
of years ago (which I keep transferring from phone to phone) and
now its gone - my friend had heart attack last feb and is now severely
brain damaged so the photo meant a lot to me - last one of both

cutting off in the past but just thought it was one of those things

Had this phone a week and had to send it back to O2 as it has a
few glaring faults. First off battery, on standby it was loosing
half its charge in just over 24 hours. Second, the phone kept unlocking
itself in my pocket and then access the internet without my knowledge.
Lastly, accepting incoming calls was a joke, phone would ring and
as soon as I took it out the cover the "busy tone sent" would be
displayed so I had to phone the person back. Happened 3 times in
one day. The good points, screen is clear and easy to read and watch
videos. Menus easy to navigate. Walkman feature is great and sound
quality (with good earbuds) is excellent. I would have kept this
phone but the faults I listed above just made it unusable for me.
Gone back to my Samsung E250 until I can negotiate a replacement,
at least the E250 behaves!

I've had this phone for three months and I am NOT IMPRESSED, at
first I thought it was going to be perfect, I loved Sony Ericsson
phones so this was my first choice because it was one of the only
two available for upgrade on my contract. It sounded good to me
I chose it for the GPS, Web 'n' Walk facility and the design - I
still think it's one of the prettiest phones around. Anyway, the
problems started with the making and receiving calls function acting
temperamental - sometimes it just wouldnt work...thats not really
what I'm looking for in a PHONE! Then, it decided that when it was
in the mood to allow me being on the phone it would just cut out
in the middle of a convo so the person at the other end could hear
me but I couldn't hear them....great. I couldn't be bothered to
take it back to T-Mobile though because sometimes it would work
fine and we'd be friends again, and if I took it back in that state
I'd have no proof of it being a willy, now it's decided I'm too
good for it and it just won't turn on any more so I have to take
it back to t-mobley :(:@:@:@:@...in the meantime I'm using old faithful....Samsung

functionality. Quite a cheap buid aswel if you ask me! im a huge
texter, and the keypad caved in! Now im a phone salesman, and that
shouldnt happen, well not after a few months of use anyways! The
phone has a constant liking of freezing during phone calls (allways
a min. of 5 seconds, max. 25 seconds :O)! The other end can hear
me, i just cant hear them! I also find the media section is very
slow indeed. Am about to try a software update as i know this solves
most common problems... (excpet the SEM W910i, or the shocking K850i!!!!!)
Other than the paint scratched on the back where the slide action
has worn it off, and the above problems.... what a hot phone! haha!
i do love it, its a fab phone, i would recommend anyone to have
it, but then again i wouldnt, because there are alot better phones
on the market now without these problems such as the fantastic W595,

function, fixed that by updating the phone software. I think mine
is somehow strangely malfunctioning with it's builtin speakers.
I seem only to get sound out of the left speaker. And yes the camers
should have had a LED or a flash function. Shake control works great
when using the phone as a MP3 player with the headset, tho I'll
be getting myself a stereo bluetooth headset with all the controls
just to get rid of the wires. Google Maps works great but i never
used wayfinder as I have a PND with iGo8 wich I like better than
every other navigation software used before. (5/5 if both speakers

Having been very impressed with the reliability and usability of
the SE W810i, I upgraded to this phone, wanting to stay with what
I thought was a good and reliable make (SE). How wrong I was. From
the word go, this phone has been unreliable - turning itself during
conversations with people or freezing - highly embarassing when
you're on the phone to potential employers!! I text quite fast,
but this was not a problem with my W810i; the W760i however freezes
on a regular basis. I am now sending it back after it refusing to
turn itself on, even though I have charged it fully, and looked
after it really well since I first got it. Although it is a lovely
looking phone (I have the silver one) and has tonnes of memory,
I have now lost all my texts, numbers and photos due to the fact
the stupid thing refuses to turn on - even when I have treated it
wih kid gloves. Steer well clear would be my advice!

Had this phone for all of 2 days, love all the features only let
down on features side is that there is no flash. PROBLEMS!! First
of all the top lights just under the screen started pulsating frantically
for no reason, then stopped.... no biggy. Then on the second day
the vibrations and speakers stopped working. I received a call but
could not hear a thing and the ringtone did not go off. So turned
it on and off which seemed to fix this. Then, this evening i had
jus finished a call closed the fone and the screen when very dark
and flickered, eventually when pitch black. Two days! and this many
problems, not happy SE.

I just can't fathom how they reckon that the battery life is 350-400
standby hours and 4-9 hours talk time. If i get 1 hour talk time
out of it, i'd be surprised. I took off GPS and it's still useless.
I'm seriously thinking of going back to my old phone - that one
doesn't need charging every day.

Upgraded last Thursday from a W850i to this phone, on O2. My first
impressions are essentially that I still prefer the W850, which
was one of the best, if not the best, phone I have every had. The
W760 still has battery but will need charging this evening, what
with setting it up and what not that's probably about right, so
similar to my W850. It's a nice size and weight and feels for the
most part sturdy enough to take the punishment that my phone will
undoubtedly get (except for the speakers, but more in that in a second).
The menus are animated more for a nicer look about the phone, but
this slows down it's operation, if you know what your doing, and
press the buttons to do it, the screen can take a while to catch
up, which is annoying. The sound out of the speakers is crisp, and
loud enough for a good ring when at full volume or to play music
to yourself. The positioning of them is whilst asthetically nice,
eventually problematic. The red and green call buttons are in the
middle of them and that is the only part of the phone that does
look week, I wonder how they will have fared in 8 months time. I
like the 'legacy' effect, having had 4 SE phones prior to this one,
the familiar interface is pleasing, although I don't see the need
for red and green call buttons, and give me my return arrow back,
has been dropped and is now one of the soft keys which changes operation
depending on what you are doing. Speaking of the two soft keys you
cannot change their function on the main screen, you are stuck with
media and a network dependant button (O2 in my case), which is disappointing.
One thing I noticed from setting it up is that their is an option
to make the slide more 'active' as I know that many people found
that odd, that the W850 slide did not automatically stop everything
and go into standby, I like it 'inactive' like this, but you can
change it. The camera is functional, but I don't use it often, occasional
drunk shots at night, so shouuld be fine, if you want a proper camera
phone this isn't it. The lack of light I find really irritating
too. Oh and on O2 the google maps facility has been taken off, so
not sure how the GPS works without it, be warned Overall 4 stars,
it's good, but could be better

had the exact same problem. ive had the sony ericsson w760i for
around 3/4 weeks now and i have already had 3 new handsets, simple
because each 1 of them keep saying 'inactive sim' and continueing
to switch itself off. i am not at all happy with it, and plan to
change my phone as soon as possible as the current 1 i have did
the same thing as soon as i got it home, 3days ago. i find that
it freezes alot also, and the music jumps whilst playing. however,
other than this the phone is great, its such a huge let down by
the way it performs. Also, where is the camera flash and the dedicated
camera button?! [Editor's reply: Lauren, there is no flash.]

This phone is a massive dissapointment and I'd advise you again
getting it, or any other walkman phone on the market. SE obviously
haven't taken time to check for bugs, just released it as quickly
as possible. It restarts itself very frequently with the message
'inactive sim' when there is clearly nothing wrong with my simcard.
It also gives me the 'emergency calls only' message on the front
screen and network coverage does not return until you turn the phone
off and turn it back on. I had exactly the same problem with a previous
phone I had, the w910i. It is also a walkman phone which leads me
to believe that walkman phones are not competent for usage. I strongly
advise you to decide against getting this phone if you are thinking
about it.

Really good phone but beware if you take it with O2 - they have
removed the google maps software and even if you download it yourself
it will never be able to link with the phones gps signal - instead
the mapping software works with the gprs signal (nearest 1000 m
rather than 5 m). Bit plasticky in feel but the music software is
great and very intuitive with a great sound, which is the main reason
why I bought it.

i am on my third fancy red SE w760i. the phones worked ok but i
am so unsatissfied with the uneven keypad. sony has this alot in
most of their phones. my son has the silver and i bought my friend
the black. the lights on the keypads are very uneven but not so
noticable on these colors because the keypads are dark grey. but
the red one has a light silver keypad and the keys on the right
look like the LED lite is missing. i called sony ericsson since
ive been through 3 red phones and all they could tell me was to
buy a phone with a dark keypad and then it will be easier to see.
they said that they just make the lights uneven and thats it. i
love this phone but the keypad makes it look like a cheap broken
piece of junk.

only takes a few seconds. The wayfinder application is also pretty
cool along with the shake feature. Great phone... i would seriously

Ive had my W760i a few days now and to me it just seems like its
basically a revised version of the W580i with a couple of new applications
added , the camera useage is abysmal only in portrait i mean whats
the point of having a decend 3.2mp if you cant maximise its use
???? It rings slightly louder than the W910i but it cannot hold
a candle to this phone , the W760i feels cheap plastic ready to
break and the THEMES are totally aimed at young girls with the bright
colours. I love Sony Ericsson mobiles and am gonna stick with the
fantastic albeit quiet W910i for now and send this mobile back ,
dependind on what you want a phone for it just didnt suit my needs
, i want a loud ringing SE with a decent camera and slim but for
others this may tick your boxes.....

previously had a w850i so thought the w760i would be a natural replacement.
where to start? the sound is rubbish from the front stereo speakers,
my old w850i with a single back speaker was louder, when the screen
goes off theres no clock so you have to slide the screen or press
a button to get the time up, when you've had a txt or call that
you've missed their not displayed on the stanby screen as they where
on the w850i,the camera has no dedicated button so you have to go
into the menu to activate it or waste a navigation shortcut key,
althought the camera quality is pretty good it doesn't have a flash
or auto focus, am not happy with the rubbery keys as they dont have
a possitive feel like the w850i's crafted keys, am dissapointed
with the google maps and wayfarer not being installed which is a
pain for those of use with no computor (have wrote this on the works

two days and on which I couldn't get a reliable signal. First impressions
of the 760i are great. It looks good (in rocky silver) and has a
really nice chunky feel about it. It has a great display, navigation
around the phone is good and the keypad is easy to use. All the
software, including Google Maps and Wayfarer, is loaded and works.
It also picks up a signal where the 890 didn't. An outstanding replacement
