Review:
March 2009. Updated July 2009.
The W705 is yet another Sony Ericsson phone that
appears great at first but turns out to be a lemon. When will Sony
Ericsson get this right?
The phone is a slider and quite a dinky one too,
being very compact and weighing just 98g. It has a quality metallic
finish, available in Silver or Red, and slides open nicely to reveal
a compact but ergonomic keypad. The music controls are well thought
out, and make the phone very easy to use, whether in its open or
closed position. The display is a decent size, with 262,000 colours
and a good resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. First impressions are
of a quality product.
It's a Walkman phone, and comes with the very latest
Walkman features. These include Clear Bass and Clear Stereo, giving
the very best audio experience currently available from Sony Ericsson.
The phone also comes with bundled with premium stereo headphones,
so we're not too disappointed that there's still no 3.5mm audio
jack. We've got to say that the W705 does music very well indeed.
There's plenty of space for storing music too. Not only does the
W705 come with a generous 120 MB of internal memory, it also supports
memory sticks up to 8GB and comes with a 4GB stick included. This
is enough for around 1,000 MP3 songs, and even more in AAC format.
As well as the music player, the phone has a built-in FM radio with
RDS.
Don't expect too much from the camera - it's not
a Cyber-Shot phone after all. The camera is rated at 3.2 megapixels
and has a flash and digital zoom, but no autofocus. But it does
have geo-tagging and an option to upload images to a blog, and this
reveals what the camera is really for - taking snaps and sharing
them with friends. It can also record video clips and upload those
too. Video calling is also available.
The W705 has a built-in accelerometer, which senses
movement and direction. This powers several useful features. Rotate
the phone sideways and the display will automatically flip between
portrait and landscape. Take the phone for a walk and it will count
your steps. Shake the phone to change track when playing music.
And finally, tilt, flip and shake the phone to control motion gaming.
The W705 is the first Walkman with WiFi. You can
use this to exchange data with your computer, as well as a way of
accessing the internet. The phone also has HSDPA for fast internet
access over a 3G network. And of course there's a USB connector
and Bluetooth. It's a very well connected device. YouTube support
is there too, and Google Maps as well.
There's really nothing missing from the W705. When
it works, it works very well. The problem is when it fails. Like
so many Sony Ericssons of recent years, the W705 is capable of failing
is a variety of imaginative and catastrophic ways. Losing the network,
freezing, shutting down in the middle of a call, total hardware
failure, deleting contacts, corrupting photos ... which one of these
would you like today, sir? Read the user reviews below for a flavour
of what is possible, then take our advice - find another manufacturer,

I got this phone around 2 month ago, after a short stage with the
LG Cookie, which I really did not like, so I got this one as I have
always loved the way Sony Ericssons are layed out. When I got it
I absoulutley fell in love with it. I love the colours also. Texting
is so easy, the keypad is really soft and easy to navigate around.
The internet is also very good, and loads very quickly. Music plays
very well, and it is not tinny at all, and considering it comes
with a 4GB memory card, you can have a lot of cards. And although
I know the camera is only 3.2 megapixels, it takes very good pictures
and videos. They are very high quality. When sliding up and down
it is very smooth. I have dropped it twice thought, and nothing
has really happened, only a tiny dent. I love this phone, best one

come out 2 months ago here and I was eager for a better phone than
my previous ones and the man recommended it to me. 1 month later
the screen started being fuzzy and that lasted 24 hours and then
it was perfectly fine, until 3 days ago where I just recieved a
message while my W705 was charging and then the phone restarted,
said that i need to insert a genuine Sony Ericsson battery and then
it had no network reception ever since. Now i'm left with a crappy

Just an update to my April review. Having been sent my second W705
i was thrilled that all was working well, unlike the first. But
sadly the replacement only made it to 8 weeks, before the screen
went. So disappointing as i loved everything about this phone, but
it would appear that there are major software issues. (Esp now read
more user reviews). It truly is a shame as the phone has so much
potential and is great when it works! After two though in 3 months,
I've given up and am having to leave sony ericsson for the first
time in 6 years. Trying my luck with a samsung tocco lite. Hopefully
in time sony will be able to iron out these problems with their
newest phones and i'll be able to rely on them once again for future
upgrades. Rating:

Bought this phone last week. I love the phone, great features, great
reception, mp3 player, a lot of applications for entertainment.
However, after only three days of use, the phone shut off by itself.
When I started it back up again, I was unable to send or receive
calls, access the network, internet, my menus...nothing. Also, when
I tried to charge it, an error came up that I must use a genuine
Sony battery, it was the battery that came with the phone! Battery
power was also an issue, it's a graphic hog, so turning off the
fancy eye candy options might give the battery a prolonged life.
My service provider is sending me another phone to replace this
one, but I have to wonder if this will happen again or if it is
just one of those things. Hoping not to write another one like this

This phone is great, when it works right. I am suprised having read
through the reviews that no-one has had my problem, so I'll add
another. 3 out of 4 of the handsets I've had from 02 all lose pictures,
ones that I have taken with the camera, others I have stored on
the memory card & even the phones own animations work fine one minute
then corrupt the next and have a crack thru them. Also, when i assign
a picture to a contact, it retains it for less than 24 hrs, if i
go into the contact the picture is still there but for some reason
the phone doesnt recognise that. A minor point for some people but
really annoying. The other handset i received lasted 90 mins before
I got a corrupt message on screen and I was unable to get any further.
All in all, a great handset once they have sorted out the many flaws,
I obviously ordered it when the phone was too new and have now given
up ! Rating:

the look of the phone, its the first thing that attracted me. Functionality
was good but honestly wasn't overly impressed from my last phone(SE
k810i). The internet was good, texting good and i liked the slighty
larger screen. Slide mechanism is very good and the walkman brilliant
(shake option is awful and pointless however) but i didn't feel
that it was alot better than my last phone that i'd had for two
years. Then it became faulty, i turned it on silent during a lecture.
When back home, tried to turn it on normal via the hash button but
it didn't work. Went to profiles and when i clicked this, the phone
restarts. Keeps doing this. Stuck on silent. Nice phone but not

Recently upgraded from the K810i to this phone and I must say that
in terms of design and esthetics this handset is superb! It looks
modern and classy, feels solid, the slide action is sleek, the keypad
although a little smaller is still very fuctinonal. The menus are
almost identical to the other Sony E phones I've owned, therefore
took no getting used to. Wifi and mobile internet (T-mobile web'n'walk)
works very well, although I would recommend switching Wifi off when
not in use as the battery life is noticeably shorter with it on.
The camera will not replace a decent stand alone digital camera
but is still plenty good enough, and better than some cheap cameras
I've experienced. Not yet experienced the music side of things fully,
but at first glance it seems to work very well. Not sure about the
shake feature though... This is by no means a phone with limitless
features and countless configuration options, but everything it
does, it does very well, and if you're not fussed about touch screen

I thought it only fair that I write an ammendement to the review
I posted March 23rd, in light of my recent experience. Since writing
my review I've had my phone replaced twice by carphone warehouse.
Both models suffered from the same problem, about 30% of the time
when someone called me the speaker on the phone would fail, meaning
they could hear me but I couldn't hear them. The only solution to
this was to turn the phone off and on again, something which with
this phone takes a good nintey seconds - very annoying. The other
fault was that the phone would suddenly cut off the bluetooth connection
to my car kit, even during calls. I've been using the car kit for
nearly a year without a problem, and have since tested it with other
phones and it was definitely the W705 at fault. I downloaded the
latest software version from SE but it made no difference. Anyway,
to cut a very long story short after my third W705 presented the
exact same faults I went back to carphone warehouse a nd demanded
a change to a different phone all together, and I have to say they
were very helpful. Now have a Samsung Tocco (original - not ultra)
and so far so good. My advice to everyone is don't buy a phone that
has only just come out. From what the guys at CW were saying it
seems that most models suffer from pretty major flaws in the first
production runs, flaws that aren't resolved until a few months after
the phone has been released. This is probably the fault of the manufacturers,
not testing new models thoroughly enough in their haste to get them
into the stores. For looks, build quality, and features, my original
5 star rating stands. But as this is primarily a phone, and it doesn't
do that very well I'm afraid it's 1 star. Rating:

not loud enough and i can forsee calls being missed , maybe the
w395 will be the walkman phone to blast your ears off with. This

Great phone. Lets face it - unless you're techno-freak who has to
have the latest phone 'cos it's got 0.5 of a megapixel better camera
than your last model - there really isn't much to choose between
phones these days. I got this 'cos my Blackberry broke and I fancied
something different. It was quite depressing shopping for a phone
when they're all more or less identical. This is different. First
of all it looks and feels great. It has just enough weight to make
it feel solid and well made, but it's still light in your pocket.
The finish is beautiful, really classy - professional looking. The
slider action (I've always had my doubts about sliders) is smooth
and doesn't feel like it will break in three months. The software,
operating system and menus are clear, functional and easy to use.
The feature list is just about right, there's plenty there to keep
you amused without packing the phone so full of stuff that the software
can't cope. The camera is only 3.2mp - so what; camera phones are
meant for fun spur-of-the-moment snaps. If you want a top-notch
camera - buy a camera! Call quality is clear, ringtones loud. Internet
access is quick and simple, the screen is large and clear, and the
auto rotate is surprisingly useful. You can set quick access to
your most frequently used features, great for me as I'm currently
writing a novel and now I have this phone I can ditch my dictaphone
and use the sound recorder on this instead. Of course the walkman
feature is excellent, probably the best in any phone. I looked at
every phone on the market, I took my time, and I ended up with this.
I'm very happy. As soon as I got it home and my wife picked it up
she wanted one too! A fun, functional, well built, solid feeling
phone that works well. Recommended. Rating:

indeed a much better phone than the 580. The screen is larger, the
camera is much better and the walkman seems to sound better than
the last one. None of the normal new phone bugs as yet. I would
recommend it. Rating:

Great device. However, it's a W910 with Wi Fi and a slightly faster
HSDPA ability. If you are not fussed about the extras go for the
W910, which is now extremely affordable and was 3GSM phone of the
year 2008. If you've got the W910 I would suggest waiting for the
W995. Rating:
