Sony Ericsson
W610i Review
Phone rating:
The Sony Ericsson W610i is a mid-range Walkman
phone with the new Walkman® 2.0 player. The first thing to say
is that this is yet another superb phone from Sony Ericsson. It's
not at the top end of the range, so it misses out on a couple of
features, but offers almost everything you'd want from a music phone
at a good price.
The Walkman range is now established as probably
the best range of mobile phones for playing music. The W610i has
the latest version of the Walkman player and is pretty well as easy
as using an iPod. The Walkman key gives you one-click access to
the player and from there you can play, rewind, fast forward, equalise,
shuffle tracks and create playlists. Audio quality is as good as
a dedicated MP3 player, and a standard set of headphones is included
in the sales package. The phone is also compatible with stereo Bluetooth
wireless headsets - available separately. The W610i is equipped
with Sony Ericsson's MegaBass feature which enhances bass
frequencies - a useful feature to switch on for some types of music.
It also has PlayNow & TrackID. PlayNow is a service
for downloading ringtones (which you have to pay for) and TrackID
is a free service that identifies songs that you hear on the radio
- cool.
Comprehensive CD-ripping software (Disc2Phone)
is supplied with the phone and the USB mass storage interface lets
you transfer music with drag and drop simplicity. Whilst the built-in
memory of the phone is limited, the W610i is compatible with Sony's
Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory cards, and a 512 Mbyte
card (enough for around 100 songs) is included in the sales package.
This can be expanded to 2 Gbytes - a 2
Gbyte card can be bought for around £30. In addition to
the music player, the W610i also includes an RDS FM radio.
The W610i has the same type of camera used in the
W810i - a 2 megapixel camera
with autofocus and a flash. It can also capture video clips. This
is an excellent camera - one of the best in the sub-£200 price
range. The display is a bright, clear TFD LCD which is easy to read.
It doesn't have the high resolution of the flagship Walkman phone
(the W880i), but again is
one of the best in this price range.
Physically, the W610i is quite a bit thinner than
the older W810i, but isn't
as thin as the ultra-thin W880i.
It's a good size to hold in your hand. The only gripe that we have
about the W610i is the small size of the keys. If you've got big
hands you'd be better off sticking with the W810i.
Overall, this is another fantastic Walkman phone,
positioned in the sub-£200 market and offering outstanding
value for money, with the small key size the only issue. The big
question is how the W610i fits into the Walkman range. Is it a replacement
for the W810i or is it a lower-spec
model? We think that it's really the replacement for the W810i.
Compare the W610i and the W810i and you'll see that the feature
list is nearly identical - the main difference is that the W610i
is thinner, has a new style of keypad and uses the latest software.
The W810i was one of the very best phones of 2006, and the W610i
is a worthy successor. Other phones to consider are the near-identical
K550i, the 3G
W660i and the ultra-slim W880i.

I have mixed feelings about this phone. I upgraded on a free from
the W800i and fundamentally they are the same. As far as looks and
ability to make phone calls are concerned full marks all around.
Also approve of the much improved walkman interface and the high
quality headphones, the light/flash (very useful, particularly as
an aid to avoid stepping in unfortunate things on the walk home
from town at 3am...) and the good camera. I do have some issues
with the software; it is hugely slow at times which can be very
frustrating. And the fact that when you have your headphones plugged
in listening to music with your phone on silent mode, your message
tone is pumped through to your ears (good), but if it is not on
silent it just announces to the rest of the world that you have
been sent a text, but not to you through the headphones. Why not?!
Surely the reason I have my headphones in is so that other people
don’t have to hear what I am doing on my phone? But my main
gripe is the buttons. Or more specifically THE button. Not the design,
although it did take a little getting used to. No, it’s the
little sod on the side of the phone that is used to take photos.
When I am writing texts I come close to throwing the damn phone
across the room sometimes. I am right handed (along with quite a
few other people I think) and in order to use the '1', '4', '7'
or '*' buttons in a text I reach over with my thumb to do so. This
means that the upper part of my palm has a habit of lightly touching
THE button. As a result, the phone refuses to respond to the button
your thumb is desperately pounding as you try to get the letter
R.... I actually though there was something wrong with the phone
when I first got it until I twigged what was happening. Every time
you accidentally knock THE button, the whole phone just freezes
for a second or two. Doesn't sound like much, but you try writing
the word 'grass' with out using predictive text on and you'll soon
see how frustrating it is! I realise that the button has been designed
as it is to keep it in the same style as the rest of the keypad
but I think they should perhaps have moved a little towards function
rather than form on this one. The older phone had this button countersunk
into a surround so it wasn’t an issue. This could explain
why other people who have reviewed this phone have problems perhaps.
I guess that is quite a long rant over what could be seen as a very
small faults, but thy are such niggling little things that it grates
even more! Overall though I think Sony Ericsson have done themselves
proud. If THE button was recessed I would be giving 5 out of 5,
but because of the difficulties it causes I’m only going to
give it 4. Still, sure my dad will like it when I upgrade next year
and he can have it... Hope this is useful!

I'm not that impressed with this phone. I don't use any of the additional
featurs on it tho which other people seem to be impressed with.
I don't like the keypad and find that the software seems to be very
slow at times as though it gets confused! I also don't like the
position of the microphone as my friends often get frustrated when
my voice gets muffled if I don't hold it in exactly the right position
when speaking.

The best phone i have had. Unsure if the camera is as good as the
k750i; should be as it is 2megaP compared to 1.3megaP. Think i better
peel the lens protection sticker off! Slightly thicker than the
w880i, but worth the extra thickness for a light/torch and RDS radio.
Yeah yeah. Got used to the smaller buttons in a week, so no moaning
goin on here. Top WalkMan facility. Respect 2 SonyE.

perfect. I think keypads are not as bad, as I expected, but I prefer
classic keypads. I was suprised, that sound quality is quite good.
Screen size is big enough, and i love it's weight! not too heavy,
not too light. USB speed is slow, WHY? maybe because i have USB
swith. Strange.. Owerall, it's good phone!

I got this phone as an upgrade and overall am pleased with it. slimmer
and better to hold than say the w810 but thicker than the impressive
looking w880 so it's a middle range phone. the button layout is
a bit annoying at first but u do get used to it, eventually. the
software is not so good at multi-tasking though like if i want to
play a game but play my own mp3 songs from the walkman. the game
then slows down and can't really be played. this is not an issue
with the w810 or my friends w880 so that annoyed me a bit. the build
quality is very good, especialy with metal buttons and light metal
casing gives it a sturdy feel. i like the phone and if u want a
strong performing phone that doesn't cost loads, this should be
a good consideration.

Love the W610i, the keys are no where near as bad as I thought they
were going to be. Great sound, I bought my walkman phone to life
with the 4 way speakers, great.. The camera isn't bad either, I
had a Samsung u600 and trying to take a picture of my one year old
was very hard indeed as the shutter speed is very slow but Im glad
this isn't the case with the w610i, yes there is a delay between
the auto focus and the actual picture but its something you can
live with. I have found the thickness to be just right, holding
the w880i was like holding a cracker and was far to thin for me
but thats just my taste. The camera button on the side of the phone
can be a pain at times, it is very easy to press it while holding
the phone but after the very frustrating U600 where I found myself
phoning people by mistake, again its something I can live with.
Overall another very nice phone from SE and a good price for what
you get, I do think though that SE have got in a comfy zone/safe
zone bringing more of the same with different designs, I think SE
will have to do something special next year when the Samsung G800
appears, look forward to see what they come up with.

for the card, you had to select each track induvidually!! The fact
you can change text message tones is welcom e after the D900 which

for some odd I reason I don't love this phone, it has all the functions
I like but I do not understand why at 2mega pixels the phone won't
allow you to zoom (which it doesn't state in the manual that it
will only zoom when in VGA format)which is seriously annoying and
the other annoying thing is the sleep mode clock setting that has
been removed and the only way to get the sleep mode clock is the
press the zoom key on the side when it is in sleep mode. Yes the

Sony Ericssons from Nokia a while back and convinced to upgrade
to the W610i by O2. The keys stick or do not work at all without
tapping the back of the phone, this in itself is very frustrating
as I can text message very quickly - not anymore!! Also it does
not seem to hold a list of calls, made/recieved/missed - so if I
do not get to my phone in time - I have no idea who it was or when
the call was made - nothing!! My advice - better the devil you know

Hi i bought this phone from Saudi, my first opinion about this phone
is it is best for music lovers, coming with graphic equalizer for
good quality sound and the special earphone is beast suitable for
listening music while traveling or if we r out side frome room.
I found three major problems with this phone . I am using the 2nd
pice within one month bcs when i purchased the phone , on the first
day itself the ear speaker is not working . I returned it and they
given new one for me , i am happy, but after 2 weeks the same problem
with the new pice. the basic and very important purpose of a mobile
phone is "calling" and if the ear speaker is become damge within
days for two pices then what ???.. next problem i found is in file
manager, if we copied some video clips on the phone or memmory card,
there we can see the icons of each videos (thumbnail view), their
it shows wrong views , some times shows still photos or images as
video icon or shows other videos preview as icons etc.. this is
anoying . and third one is battery life. if we are using musing
or video for some time the battery will become down very fast .
this phone namely known for multimedia (W- walkman) then why there
is no support for long play .

I donno why mobile-phones uk always gives outstanding(ie 5) to Sony
Ericsson Walkman series phones. Seriously they are'nt exceptional.
I will suggest put these phones on par with Nokia N series or even
less(comparing sony's smaller screen,No Symbian support,Poor Web
browsing,Battery life etc).Even in the music front Nokia N series
is catching up. Dont get carried away by review on Sony walkman
series I have seen it and still seeing it. [Editor's reply: we are
not biased in favour of Sony Ericsson. We gave very low marks
to the W550i, Z200,
Z520i and K600i
for example. But most of the time Sony Ericsson just get it right.
The one thing that we don't like about the W610i is the keypad,
and we have commented on this in our review. The fact is that even
if you take the small keypad into account, this phone still beats
most current phones. This is because when you compare phones that
are in the same price range, you'll find that the W610i offers
exceptional value for money. Comparing the W610i with NSeries phones
isn't fair as they cost substantially more to buy, and frankly come
with a whole load of problems as discussed in our reviews of these
phones. Besides, our users also seem to prefer Sony Ericsson over
other brands - Sony Ericsson have been awarded more 5 star phone
reviews than any other manufacturer.]

I just upgraded to this from a w800i, and I loved it at first. Then
after 2 days the handset speaker broke. Sent it back, and the next
handset the screen broke after 2 days! So within a week it has broken
twice. Absolute crud compared to the w800 which in 18 months was
dropped, got wet etc and never gave any grief. This phone goes back
to O2 again tomorrow, and I will be insisting on a w810i as a replacent.
Such a shame, because it is a very nice looking bit of kit. One
other fault when it was working: The MP3 player is a bit of a smart-****
and orders tracks into the folder it THINKS they should be in, not
the folder I TELL them to go in. No problem with the old w800i.

Nice looking phone, all the functions seem to work as they're supposed
to. Negatives: - Battery life: Quoted is 7 hours talk time, 350
hours standby. Now we all know these are always overestimated by
the manufacturer, but I'm lucky to get 1 hour airtime before needing
a charge. So you'll be charging it every day, with corresponding
wear on the batteries. I'd accept a 2x overestimate of battery life,
but 7x is insulting my intelligence. - Camera: 2MP is perfectly
adequate, but why can't you use the zoom unless you're shooting
at VGA resolution??? - Screen saver: The phone apparently can't
be set to turn off the screen while you're making a call. After
about 10 minutes the phone actually gets uncomfortable to hold to
your ear thanks to the waste heat produced by the screen, even at
the lowest brightness setting. - And finally, fragility: I dropped
this phone from my lap to a carpeted floor, a fall about about 18".
This was sufficient to damage the ear speaker, so now I can call
people and speak to them, but can't hear their replies. Back to
the repair shop with it!

First of all, I am sorry if this review is too long for anyone.
If so, I recommend you read "wAlKeR fRoM eNgLaNd's" review and see
if you can make sense of it. Well, I upgraded to the Sony Ericsson
W610i from and old Alcatel phone (which I had for a long time),
and what an upgrade that was! I've had the W610i for 2 days now
and so far it's fantastic! I was looking for a more music focused
phone because my iPod's battery is terrible now, and this phone
does the job well. Nearly everything about it is great - the music
player is of great sound quality and is easy to navigate around.
It's also very easy to put songs onto the phone, you just install
the Disc2Phone program and then just drag and drop songs onto the
phone. It's almost as easy as using a dedicated music player - you
can create playlists, and put on 'Shuffle' mode, etc. MegaBass seems
a handy feature, although once I activated it, I wasn't sure how
to turn it off and I'm still working on that. Secondly, the camera
and video recorder are a real upgrade from my old Alcatel, which
couldn't even record videos and had a 0.3 megapixel camera - if
even that. Anyway the camera/recorder on this phone are great, although
obviously not the best out there. If you want a good quality camera,
buy a camera. But there is one small annoyance with the camera on
this phone. For some reason you can't seem to zoom in on 'Normal'
mode. People seem to be complaining about the size of the buttons,
I got used to them within my first day of having it. But I suppose
I don't have very big hands, so maybe if you do - beware. Having
not had Bluetooth before (the Alcatel didn't support it) I find
the Bluetooth on the W610i very good. I've been sending and receiving
songs with my friends and it's very quick. No problems there. The
phone comes with earphones, but I found them quite dodgy, and used
some Sony ones that I used with my iPod, and it's perfect. It's
good how the phone comes with a 512Mb memory card, enough for about
100 songs. I've ordered a 2Gb one from Amazon for only £20, which
is compatible. There is one small problem I have, and I think it
has been mentioned before. Although this has only happened once
or twice, sometimes the phone freezes for a few seconds. Battery
life at the start is OK, but after a few full charges it seems to
last longer. Oh yeah, and some people are complaining about the
time not being displayed when it's on the screensaver, just press
the volume button. The time will appear for about 5 seconds but
thats enough to just see the time. Overall, the Sony Ericsson W610i
is a fab phone, and I can see me having this for a long time. Thanks
for reading (if you did)! [Editor's comment: Thanks for taking the
time to write a detailed review, Mike. We read it, and I'm sure
that anyone thinking of buying this phone will appreciate your comments
too. Your comment about the camera not zooming when in maximum resolution
is correct - that's the way most Sony Ericsson's are designed.]

Have had this for a week now. It's great, but I really think SE
shouldn't have preferred design over usability as these thin metal
lines for buttons really are quite uncomfortable. Another thing
that annoys me a bit is the energy saving mode with clock display
off - there's no way to turn it off so I could see the time displayed
without pressing a button. Other than that it's a good package -
the Walkman is brilliant as usual; although the camera is nothing
special it's as good as you can expect from a handset that slim
(it actually has Auto Focus which is a noteworthy advantage over
w880i) and if you're able to handle the buttons it's also quite
easy to use. Overall a great handset for it's low(ish) price tag.

i fail to see how anyone can comment upon its superiority to the
W810i, if anyone had bothered to read the specifications of both,
you will realise they are identical, aside from one, the screen
resolution is the same on both, however the W810i has an lcd screen,
this phone does have the new walkamn on it, however, its the same
thing with a new skin, nothing different, this is a good phone,
but i think its time sony made a walkamn phone that coupld compete
with the likes of the Nokia N95, which in my opinion, if they decided
to make somethin as good, would be possibly the best phone around.
My W810i had a configuration error, so i had to send it to be fixed,
and the company made an error, and sent me the W610i i find it a
good phone, however the buttons are like wire which seems like such
a small feature to pick on, however, if im paying for it, i want
nothing but what I want

Got this phone as a replacement for my w800, in silver on the Orange
network. Phone looks lovely and has many new features over the w800
(most notably the new Walkman application) to make it feel enough
of a "new" phone rather than simply a replacement. However, within
a week I had to send it back - those buttons are too small, you'll
need to use your fingernails rather than fingertips, and I had an
especially hard time using the hash button for spaces when texting.
If you can put up with the buttons then definately go for it, the
camera is great and the mp3 facility outstanding. One word of advice
though: Orange UK remove the Track ID feature!

At first i saw this phone and looked at it and thought wow this
looks amazing slim design gorgeous colour and a walkman phone, which
ive yet to discover as i havent had one before. This phone is geneius
the walkman play at a touch of a button goes straight into it, mind
you i did have a K750i. Yes the camera is only a 2mp but that doest
take away the fact that this is a great phone, once you have taken
the picture the quality is better than when you take it (which seems
to be common on some phones these days). The only down fall is the
small buttons, but i have found them to be easy to use even though
ive used it for about 4-5 hours! Over all this phone is a winner
and i can see it topping the list this summer!
