Sony Ericsson W580i Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A cool-looking slide-design Walkman phone with funky lighting effects. It's not the greatest Walkman phone ever (with limited memory capacity) and doesn't have an exceptional camera, but it's a good all-rounder and is one of the best lookers. However, because of a problem with the keys breaking, we recommend that you avoid this phone.
Best buy: *Free* with a free gift (from an LCD TV to a Sony PS3) from Dialaphone (White); or on Pay as you Go for £69.95 from the Carphone Warehouse (Black or Pink).

The Sony Ericsson W580i is a Walkman phone in a slide design. It's available in a choice of white, black, pink or grey.

Physically, the W580i looks cool. It's a nice slider, with a very usable 5-way navigation key. The keypad has sensibly-sized keys that light up in use and are easy to press. Dedicated keys are used to control the Walkman functions, so you can play music when the slide is closed. The screen is of good quality and can be viewed outdoors without too much trouble. Like the S500i, the W580i features very cool lighting effects and is a beautiful phone to look at and play with.

The W580i features a "shake control" - you flick your wrist when the music player is on and a random song is selected to play. Gimmicky but cool. Another gimmick is the built-in pedometer. It's a useful feature if you do a lot of walking, but pedometers are cheap and readily available - do you really need one in your phone?

The main feature of the W580i (apart from making phone calls, of course!) is the music player. We've written about the quality of the Walkman music range many times on this site - take it from us, it's good. The W580i has the new version 2.0, and is also equipped with an FM radio. A stereo headset is included in the sales package, and there's also support for an optional Bluetooth stereo headset. The available memory is not generous - just 12 Mbytes built-in (enough for 3-4 songs) but the memory is expandable to 1 Gbyte (Memory Stick Micro™) or 4 Gbytes (Memory Stick PRO).

The phone also comes with a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, but this cannot compare with the autofocus-equipped cameras on the K800i or W610i.

However, the big problem with the W580i is that the keys are prone to cracking. Read the user reviews below to see just how many people have reported the same problem. It was exactly the same with the Sony Ericsson S500i. We recommend that you avoid the W580i and consider the very similar W850i slide phone, which is selling for a much lower price than the W580i and has the advantage of 3G too.

I have been waiting to get this phone for ages and now I have it I am very disappointed with it. The only good thing about this phone is that it is slim. I have had this phone for about 2 months now and 5 of my keys have cracked due to no fault of my own. There is an irrating squeaking noise when texting and the camera is very basic. All in all, this is a very poor make from Sony Ericsson.

i've had this phone for a month now for £99.99 and there has been no complaints. i love this phone to peaces. i love the earphones the way they stay in your ears and add base to the song. i've been going on and on about this phone since the moment i had it. although the camera is on 2.0 megapicsels and there is no flash with makes the pictures in the dark almost unable to see you can edit the pitures in photoJD to make them lighter. as usual the camera isn't great eather but it works for me. if you want a bog standered phone that texts very good, looks very nice, plays song loud, has a big screem and is VERY good go for this one (the pink is mine ands its very nice, but i like the grey!) 5 stars. I've had this phone since July and I've had no problems with it! All of the keys are still intact and I send a lot of texts everyday so hopefully they wont crack.. The phone is pretty :) I got it because I liked the look of it, the lights are a nice touch! Dont really use the shake control as much, think its just a bit of a gimmick. The camera is decent, would have been better with a flash, but its good for random shots. Its a good phone, and much cheaper now than it was before.. so I'd definitely recommend it!

I am on my 3rd replacement of this phone and due to its shoddy design this one has broken too. The first one i had the navigational arrows didnt work at all. the second one i had the microphone did not work on it so you could not make calls (pretty pointless having a phone that u cant use to PHONE people with). I then got my recent 3rd replacement phone. At first i thought it was fine but then after about 2 weeks the buttons cracked. I really like the phone and its software but the hardware that is used on the phone doesnt do the job properly. I think Sony Ericsson should have tested this model over a longer period of time. I love the phone...it just breaks easily!!!

This is possibly the best phone I have had. I generally get a new mobile every 6 months, or less if something I really like the look of comes out. I've had it now for about 2 months & had now problems. The sound quality is fantastic. After having an N80 its a pleasure to have a thin, lightweight phone. It's the usual SE menu options so nothing new there. The battery life is very long too & can last me for a couple of days without charging it. And that's listening to music & playing games for over 2 hours everyday travelling to & from work. The quality of the screen is superb. There are 3 things I don't like about it - 1) No flash for the camera, 2) The socket is in middle of the right side which can be in the way when listening to music & playing a game/texting & 3)all the games are demos. But even with those things I still will be giving it 5 stars.

i got this phone for my birthday earlier on in the year, i thought it was great and this would be the phone i'd keep for a couple of years, but then strange things started to happen for example, i would be listening to music and then it would cut out saying"playback failed" then i looked in my files with all my music and it was all gone, also my pictures and videos aswell.i took out the memory card and then put it back in and it was fine. i took it back to the shop and got another w580i and nothing was going wrong with it for the first couple of days, and then it happened again. but when i got the replacement i stupidly kept the memory card from the first one, which now i think was the problem. so again i took it back to the shop and asked for my money back, and now im stuck with the samsung u600 whch is ok but i really do miss the sony ericsson w580i!!!!! i recommend this phone to anyone! its so easy to use and is packed with lots of things to do!!!!

Shake control is also one of the best features launched. Display is Very Very GOOD. Price is a little issue but one who likes it should purchase it.

If this phone was better quality then i would have got a replacement but i fear i will only have to send it back again so i am now looking at another model!

Two buttons on my keypad have cracked in the w510i and i have had the phone for just 3 weeks. Nothing like that happened with my previous phone. Another problem i am facing with the new phone is when i recieve calls 6 out 10 times, the person on the other end cannot hear me. I have a warranty for this phone, but they refuse to give me a new set and at the same time they are unable to fix the problem. i miss my old phone!

Plus side? Great music storage if you put in a 1GB chip in (some say that you can find 4GB ones but I'm not sure), it is a slidie, it has like a fitness app. in if you love sports and the navigation buttons are easier to use than joysticks. Also a lot o people I know give this phone thumbs up cause it is quite sleek. BUT downside? The 4,7,8, and 9 keypad cracked down the middle in the first day, and a bit disappointing that mine don't zoom in when in camera mode! Also, no auto focus, no flash... and only demo versions of games so you have to buy one (I'm a phone-game lover). Also, not a 3G phone... This is my first sony ericsson phone, but whoa! The sony ericsson phones everywhere! But I liked this one best cause it ain't joystick and it was way better than Motorola.

I have had this phone for just under a week. The design is very good to look at and the camera is very clear. The main problems are that the battery life is quite short and sometime the phone freezes. This has only happened to me once so i don't think it is a major problem. I haven't had any buttons crack yet. The music quality is very good and memory stick has over 430mb which is excellent if you want to store alot of music. I find that the bluetooth is very easy to connect with the computer as i have had problems with connecting other phones bluetooth. I would recomend this phone as it is easy to use once you get the hang of it and is packed with features. XxXxX

Dreadful phone, mine has been away twice already to SE repair centre only 6 weeks old!! Was told by customer services at SE that there were no issues with keys cracking, liars or not informed? Will never buy a SE again, poor customer service dept. I asked for a new model and was told sorry we will repair it and it will be as good as new!! What a joke!! Stay away from this phone and more importantly the dreadful customer support!!

I loved this phone...it had so many amazing features. It did, however, have a major flaw... Two days after i bought it, the keys on the front stopped working. The number keys inside worked fine, but really without the arrows and selecting buttons, you cant do anything. Naturally, i figured it was a hardware problem, probably just an isolated incident. Took it back, got a new one. Worked fine for about two weeks, then it does the same thing. I lose the selecting buttons, and the arrow keys. Both times, the phone hadnt been dropped or mistreated in any ways. After that, i went with a different phone... I dont know how many other people have had this problem, but other than that, it was a great phone.

I bought it two months ago. No problems raised. Keypad is ok. Didn't broke at all, and seems to be quite responding although the buttoms are slightly small. Mp3 tones used as ringtones are average, not as clear sounds as my previous z710i. Volume for ringtones is so loud if you put on maximun impossible to miss a call!. Battery life could be better.(3 days on average use). I suppose is beacuse of the lights effects. The back cover is a pain to put it on and out!. Look very atractive and the 2mP camera is impressive in day light pcitures even has not autofocus and flash... The screen is bright and clear. The slide work this time as respond and hang up incoming calls :):) I really like it and I love the slim case but I'm still waiting for a slim version of walkman flip phone, as is more convinient for me :)

I've had the W580i for 6 weeks and the majority of the keys have split in the middle! If this has happened in such a short space of time this is not good! I have been offered a replacement phone by 02 who i bought it from but am concerened that this may happen again but was told that there was a bad batch of phones and Sony Ericsson have now rectified this. I am now waiting for a replacement reconditioned W580i which i am not happy about but was offerd no other option! Would have preferred to have changed the model of phone but was told i couldnt. So... just to warn other prospective buyers of problems experienced after such a short space of time! Texting is awkward due to the thinness of the slide keypad and think that is why my keys have cracked with texting frequently. After having a K750I for over 2years and being happy with it i am disappointed with the W580i and if i had my choice again would buy a different model!

I've had this phone a month and I thought Sony had sorted out the cracking keys/paint problem as the sales guy said he'd not had any back because of this, so I went ahead and bought it anyway. My 6 key broke within a week and now the paint has come off the navigation wheel on the front of the phone, making it look old before it's time. despite this I still love the phone and all it's functionality, I would just be wary of getting such a new phone to the market next time as my contract only allows a phone every 18months, so i now have to live with it for this period and I guess it's only gonna get worse and worse!!!

I was told before buying this that the broken keypad problem only occurs with S500i.I've only had this for a week and a half and the 4 key has already cracked and the 6 key looks like is gonna break soon too. The slide is also a bit wobbly and i'm disappointed with the screen quality which is supposed to be QVGA. I'm thinking of taking it back and getting something else altogether.

This phone has been a REAL disappointment. The first one that got sent to me was faulty. I've had the replacement for just over a week and already 2 of the keys have cracked in half. I'd been so excited about this phone and am really annoyed because apart from those problems it is really amazing. However, keys cracking in half is a pretty major problem. I treat my phone very carefully and so it's not even like there is just cause for it breaking so easily. I'm sending it back and going for the k810i. Be wary if thinking about getting this phone.

I just bought this phone and I have to say, it's pretty much perfect for what I need. The camera is pretty good quality but I use a real camera to take pictures so it's not that important for me. I haven't really used the music feature that much but fromm what I can tell the sound quality is quite sufficient. The only downfall, if even, is that you can't, or at least I don't know how to, zoom in picture mode. But that's a menial downfall. It's very smooth and there's an amazing fitness program to accompany the pedometer. Great buy!

I also want to know how much memory this can handle cus i kno that there is a 4gb m2 out but 1gb is still pretty gd. overall the phone seems to be great, i meen it looks brilliant with the colour and lighting and its sound it superb, however there is a problem: the video quality is suprisingly poor compared to the photo quality and tht is a major drawback. It has many applications some seem quite pointless and all the games i got were demos! Nevertheless it is a cool phone and was pretty much worth what i payed but id reli like to kno about the memory issue. :P

Its slider is very flimsy and looks as if it will break after a few uses. Plus sides the walkman player is quite loud and the battery is good also the light effects are a nice feature. I took this phone back after a week and replaced it with nokia N95 and i wont be going back to sony ericsson for a long time
