Sony Ericsson W395 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A budget music phone with a Walkman music player, memory card slot, FM radio, Bluetooth and a basic camera. But despite its low price, we feel that the W395 offers poor value for money, and we don't recommend this phone.
Best buy: £39.95 on Pay as you Go from Dialaphone, or £49.90 from Mobiles.co.uk (Black or Silver), or £49.95 from the Carphone Warehouse.

Review: June 2009. Last updated July 2009.

Like too many Sony Ericsson's of late, the W395 looks good on paper only. Let's be a little more generous: it looks good when you get it out of the box too. But once you charge it up and switch it on: that's when the problems begin.

The W395 is a budget Walkman phone in a slide design. It's an average size and weight and comes in a choice of Black, Grey or Titanium. The Walkman controls are useful and light up in a funky way when in use. The keys aren't the best though and we found the slide to be a bit wobbly, although not so wobbly that we expect it to fall off. The screen is average for a budget phone and does the job. The 2 megapixel camera is average too - average for an entry-level phone that is - in other words, not up to much.

But it's a Walkman phone, so let's look at the music functions next. On paper, everything is fine, with a music player, FM radio with RDS and stereo speakers. But again, once you try it out, that's when the problems start. We found the Walkman software to be quite buggy. The menus were slow and have a tendency to freeze. Some MP3 tracks wouldn't play, even though they play on other phones. No PC suite is available for synching phone with computer. And to top it off, the memory available is very poor indeed, at just 10 MB of built-in user memory. That's enough to store about two music tracks! So, for a Walkman phone, this is really a flop.

There are far better phones available in the sub-£100 price range. Examples are the Samsung Tocco Lite, the LG Cookie, the Nokia 5310 Xpressmusic, and the Samsung G600.

Features of the Sony Ericsson W395 include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Display: TFT, 262,144-colours, 176 x 220 pixels (2 inches)
  • Stereo music player
  • FM Radio with RDS
  • Integrated handsfree stereo speakers
  • MP3/AAC ringtones
  • Sound recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
  • 3D Java games with motion sensor
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Memory: 10 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro™ support (up to 4GB)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB mass storage
  • Flight mode
  • GPRS, EDGE, web browser
  • Vibrating alert
  • Quadband
  • Size: 96 x 47 x 15 mm
  • Weight: 96g
  • Talktime: up to 8 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 480 hours

For a cheap phone this isn't bad. The sound quality is really good. I have previously had a K750i and a W302 and it beats them by far. The volume is loud and the sound very good for a phone. With a good memory card you can store hundreds of songs. My main problems with the phone is the slight delay when opening it and accessing menus, ad the fact that it only stores 50 or so text messages. There doesn't appear to be any way to extend the sms memory despite having a memory card. Not sure what people's problem is with themes - there are 5/6 and are typical sony themes i.e clarity, city life, walkman etc. x

Simply poor....rest cell I ever had.Even though it's a walkman, it can't play 80% of my mp3's which are easily played by my other cell (N79). Caller's voice sounds too low. I always heard of sony's walkman that they good, but if this what they call good, I would rather prefer "bad". Slowest UI, BTW, is this phone is made inside a fridge, actually it freezes once a day (.....very punctual) . If you value your hard earned money, never buy this phone

Previously had a S.E. and had downloaded Media Go direct from SE's website. I was having my doubts before buying this phone as no PC Suite, although Media Go worked! Admittidley it was a slower in downloading, could be because I changed the ripping/transfer speed to get better quality. Always had a Sony cause I liked the operating system, I find it easy to use, no change with this phone. It looks and feels good and for the price I was not expecting all the techie stuff, which their isn't. When I added the MPS 100 speakers the sound was crisp, clear, bassie and loud enough for entertaining. Shame about the earphones as they are from the lower end of the Sony range hence the price of the phone, could be worth upgrading to a decent set that fit in the ear. Cant quite figure out what stereo widening does to the sound and if it like it. No Megabass, Bass++ yes. Scrolling is slower than previous models but in no rush nowadays but did seem to speed up once fully charged up and raring to go. I dont use my phone as a camera so not bothered about the 1.3mp, below average. I use the phone for music, calls, messages, alarms and the time and it works fine, so far. Not yet tried to change the Themes, hopefully I can bluetooth other Themes from previous S.E.'s, but no great loss if cant as not expecting the extras from a budget Walkman. The sound is different from previous models, you can hear difference in production and recording volumes in every track, which is nice. To transfer music files I had downloaded and installed Media Go from S.E.'s webiste to my computer. Making sure Media Go's application was not open/running I hooked up the 395 via the USB, once Windows recognised the new hardware I closed the newly found drive window(the one with the phones folders), closed down setup wizard (if it pops up) and finally opened Media Go. Once in, the phones memory card and internal memory was recognised where I could just pop in a CD rip the tracks to Media Go and then transfer to the phone. The sound quality on calls was good I had to lower my voice as the other end thought I was shouting, good on public transport then. Overall its a great Walkman and possabilties of great phoneness. Neifty. Gremlins? Yes, Used the phone heavily for 12 hrs after which eventaully it crashed, screen went fuzzy, sound stopped, screen reappeared after opening and closing the slider, walkman shuffled back to track 1. 1 hr later crashed again. Great Sound yes, Realiable for heavy usage no.

Who for art thou Walkman 395? To me this is a uncomplicated (basic) retro phone with a new Walkman sound hence the price. P.S. you can synch this phone with your computer by going online to S.E.to download the software.

I got this phone today for an early Christmas present. It said it came with free lipgloss, it didnt, but other than that all is good. Good space for my memory card, camera, games, radio, video, sound rec. and more. The walkman is good as is the speakers. I am 13 and when my 3 month old LG KS360 broke, and Tesco refused to mend, even though I did nothing wrong, this was a good replacement. My Granny, who brought it for me was also pleased. So, if this is what you are after, and like the pink and are 13 then I think youve found it!

This phone is a pain.I regret that I didn't buy the Nokia Xpress Music 5130 or 5220,I have a long story with Nokias and they've always kept me satisfied but I wanted to try something new this time and look what happened.OK,so the phone has a very cool design and the sound is absolutely outstanding, but the camera quality is very poor, too poor for a cellphone of this type and with this type of concurrency,it gets very slow when you're in the Walkman and try to acess the music gallery,it shuts down the music when you're sending a text and I always have a hard time connecting it with my computer.Plus,I have had this phone for less than a month and it has already frozen three times, all of which I had to remove the battery for the phone to continue working. And it doesn't allow you to store more than 200 messages,in inbox and outbox combined. Not to mention people on the phone always sound like they're talking super low(you get used to it though).Yes it's a beautiful one with great design and outstanding sound but it leaves much to be desired.

And btw this model supports pc suit, and abt not being able to detect the phone pls download its pci driver from sonyericsson.com, you people only downloaded the p.c. suit. And about internet java application you have to manually set the settings, all u have to do is copy the wap settings of ur service provider and setup a new settings for java. U can do that by clicking the option buttons beside the java you have downloaded.

Wanted to have a stylish mid-class slide mobile phone, I decided to buy SE W395 on Oct 5 2009. As I expected, everything was not quiet good but the sliding design and the stereo speakers. But then I found my phone restart automatically when I played tracks through the Walkman media player. The same symptom happened when I used tracks on the memory card as ringtone, after the speakers buzzing such a loud tone the phone restarted. I thought the problem was on the memory card, so I didn't use it since; but my phone got restart frequently when I used SMS, it freezed for a minute and restarted. Getting annoyed, I asked SE customer service about this and they recommended me to upgrade my phone's software. It didn't help, my phone still restarted more frequently. Now my brand new SE w395 is taking a peaceful rest on SE service center to be repaired with no confirmation when it's gonna be finished. Perhaps this is just such an exception of thousands of well-produced SE phone, but I don't recommend you to buy SE W395 if you seek for a good phone, it doesn't worth the price, it's just under-average on its class - adding the guarantee is not that easy to claim. Now I see why SE still become the second mobile phone vendor in my country after Nokia, generally they don't concern much about quality controll and after-purchasing service.

Hi Guys, I buy W395 phone because I had a very good experience with W700i. But after i buy this phone, here are the issues which i am facing 1) Headphones are not so good as compare to Sony Erricsson was providing for Walkman series phones 2) All my application which uses internet connection are not working except browser. Every application is saying "Please check your Internet Java Settings". I searched a lot but not able to fix this. 3) No PC Suit is supported for this edition. SO how to sync your data/contacts with PC. Even i am not able to use internet on my laptop using this phone.

I purchased this phone last week from Orange. I wasnt expecting much from it, seeing as it was only £70. So far Ive not had any problems, the phone came with all the nessasary kit and its been working perfectly fine. The only 2 negative things I have to say about this phone is that the USB transfer rate seems pretty slow (390kb/s approx, I had an 890i before this phone and the trasfer rate was very quick indeed. The other problem is that the mp3 player doesnt support .wma files which is a right pain seeing as older Sony Ericsson models do support that audio format. Other than that its not a bad phone for the price....A stylish and reasonably sturdy design, good sound quality and not a bad camera. Its easy to slate this phone as there are many alternatives but out of all the phones I tried in the shop in this price range, the w395 came out top for me.

Well, mine was supplied with a 1Gb M2 Memory Card, there’s no problems with the slider whatsoever and it came unlocked from Carphone Warehouse. I purchased a 2Gb card for about £10. Also enclosed was a USB Cable, the phone was detected immediately by windows and the capacity to transfer files was instant. What does anyone need a suite for - complete waste of hard drive, common-sense and time. Functionality’s fine, no problems at all with programs freezing. Reception’s good. Speaker sound quality’s adequate, as mentioned there’s an equaliser function available. Playback’s seamless and undisturbed, I’d just personally like a bit more volume. Camera’s to your expected Ericsson standard, for a reasonably priced phone. It’s a walkman phone, no needless themes - with the focus on music. What do people actually expect? It’s a decent, compact phone. If you use the internet often - erm, buy an internet Phone. You get what you pay for. Overall - no problems.

I bought W395 3 weeks ago. The speaker output is good enough (still not as good as ROKR :D) Camera is average, it's a camera phone anyway, what do u expect :D I could play walkman on background and write text or browse the internet at the same time and processing speed remain the same. Well, it did freeze once last week. But never happen again since.

Hi, I bought a few weeks this Sony Ericsson W395 and I have to say that it is much better than the Nokia; I think that Nokia should learn from Sony Ericsson. Because W395 is excellent it has side button dedicated to the Walkman player, the 2 megapixel camera is also fatalistic (but to be EXTRA-EXCELLENT should have a flash) has a memory card to 1GB that is enough, and this W395 have 15.9Mb of memory (and Nokia's also have 10Mb of memory, and almost the times Nokia's have less than 10Mb) and is very fast even when using the Walkman player, also the speakers are very powerful, much better than the Nokia 5130 and 5200 and… And one or two more things, Nokia's are very SLOW, AND ALMOST THE TIMES THEY BREAK, AND THAN YOU HAVE TO RESTART YOUR NOKIA, BUT WITH THIS OR ANOTHER SONY ERICSON YOU DON'T HAVE THIS PRBLEM! I think in its current range is the best phone on the market in terms of quality price. SONY ERICSSON'S ARE ONE OF THE BEST MOBILES! And Nokia and Motorola are the WORSES!

I got this phone a week ago, speakers are very good, its well built and looks nice. The camera is rubbish, the screen is poor and the music player has bugs and is slow to change track, scroll up or down etc. When i put music on it, in the walkman i went to options > my music, and all my music was there and played (for people who have had trouble getting the music to work). so far it has frozen once, cant remember why. I still haven't been able to get it unlocked, the last place i went to said it would take 3 hours+ and i didn't have time to wait for it. I'm disappointed with this phone and am tempted to take it back and change it.

Screen resolution less, fewer features, lots of things can't be done that can with my phone. Well built though and better than my wife's six year old Nokia!
