In a nutshell: A budget Walkman phone, the W302 appears
to offers a lot in an attractive slimline package: 2 megapixel camera,
video camera, Walkman player, FM radio, memory card and Bluetooth.
But the keys are small, the menu slow and the sound a bit too quiet.
No themes are available to install and there is no PC sync software.
Available in Midnight Black or Sparkling White.
Review:
January 2009. Updated June 2009.
Sony Ericsson have done a lot with the W302 to
bring their Walkman range within reach of the entry-level market.
This phone now retails for well under £100. It's an attractive
superslim phone, measuring just 10.5mm thick and weighing a featherlight
78g. With an aluminium front, it feels strong enough to take some
damage despite its small size. We'll take one star away for the
keypad however, as the keys are gratuitously small and spaced out
too far.
This is definitely a step up from previous budget
Walkman phones like the W200i
or W350i, which both missed
out on some important features such as Bluetooth or a video recorder.
There's nothing obviously missing from the spec of the W302. The
screen is a TFT display with 262,000 colours, although the resolution
is a little on the low side at 176 x 220 pixels. The camera is reasonable
- 2 megapixels plus a video recorder - although there's no flash.
Obviously there's an excellent Walkman player included, plus the
bonus of an FM radio with RDS. The memory is rather small, at just
20 MB, but you can add memory cards up to 4GB. Connectivity is by
Bluetooth or USB. Battery life is average.
However, even though this is a budget phone, there
are still some problems that are really unacceptable. We deducted
one star for the keypad, and we also have issues with the low volume
from the speaker, the lack of customisable themes, and the fact
that the phone menus are so slow. There is no PC sync software supplied,
so the only way to move data onto the phone is via USB mass storage.
Texting using the T9 software is painful, and the network connection
doesn't seem to be robust, with the phone sometimes losing the network
even in a good signal location. Although Sony Ericsson have packed
a lot into this phone, we still feel that we should get more for
our money. It could have been a 5 star phone if Sony Ericsson had
put some more effort into ironing out these problems. We'd recommend
the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic
as a better alternative.
Features of the Sony Ericsson W302 include:
2 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom and
image stabiliser
Video camera
Display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
Walkman player (plays music and video)
FM radio with RDS

Memory: 20 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro
(M2) support (up to 4GB)
Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB

Weight: 78g

I've also been fooled into buying this phone when I saw wich features

I use my phone for talking and text messaging. The other features
are nice-to-haves. As other reviewers have mentioned, the sound
level is low, but another irritation is the fact that the phone
has only one barely audible message alert tone leading the user
to have to waste their time searching for useful tones and writing
disgruntled reviews. I previously used the Z310i, a very basic phone
but a solid one. For text messaging, my personal preference is to
use predictive text, and with the Z310i, this was an absolute pleasure.
With that phone I was able to efficiently type quite lengthy messages
with limited discomfort. The W310 becomes slower and slower as a
message gets longer, with the text display lagging the typing by
1 or 2 words after a mere 3 or 4 lines. I understand that predictive
text usually uses space characters to sense the end of word. The
W302 often decides in mid word that it has reached the end and needs
to start a new word, leading to absolute gobbledygook. Because of
the delay these are not seen immediately and one ends up with a
message largely needing to be retyped. Adding to the frustration
is inaccessibility to the custom dictionary. Every once in a while
some said gobbledygook would get added to the dictionary (Yes, it
does this automatically and without confirmation) and the only way
to remove it seems to be a system reset. Quality, from the customer
perspective is a measure of how well a product satisfies his/her
personal requirements. If I were rating a walkman or camera, I’d
give this a few stars, but since my personal requirement is for
a communication tool, I feel it fails dismally. I’d give it
a zero rating if that were possible…. Rating:

Id give this fone 5 stars if it wasnt for the fact that ive only
had it a week and have already gotta send it back for a repair job
coz i keep getting the wsod even tho ive done as suggested bymanual
eg a master reset and took battery and sim out to reboot. Makes
no difference my fone still freezes esp if i listen to music on
it which is totally anoying and i either have to turn it on and
off to get it working again or leave it to ride out coz it wont
even switch off. I even sent a msg to se for advice and they toldme
to go to their website and do a software update on the fone and
that will sort it- only prob is u cant do software updates on the
W302 so they dont even know what they are talking bout. Other anoying
thing is it dont come with a cd so u have to go on se site and download
what u need frm there for the fone. You need to download media manager
on ur pc to transfer music to ur fone frm ur pc but it dont mention
any of that in the manual plus when u select the W302 o n the website
and it comes up with all the download info it does not have the
media manager download so i had to select a different phone and
download it frm the information for that fone which is stupid. Apart
frm all that the fone is great and i hope the sort the wsod problemout

sync with Outlook, despite what's claimed in some places on the

capability.but it's not.first it's not stable.if i type fast on
the numpad for text messaging it doesnt give the correct alphabet.
example is when i press the number 6 button twice as fast as possible,
instead of giving me an "n" it gives "mm".second it has low memory.if
i send a big mp3 file via bluetooth,it can only store up to the
memory available at that time.example, i'll send a 6mb mp3 file,
if the unit has only 3mb left on its internal, probably shared,
memory it can only accept that, so the file is incomplete, but it
can be remedied by restarting the phone.third the shortcuts are
limited.if you use the w890 or even my old k810, you can select
wherever you want to shortcut.like sms/inbox or filemanager/music
or no matter how deep it is from the root menu.last is the charging,it
doesn't show you realtime status of the percentage of the battery
being charged.the bar still moves from end to end unlike the other
w series that when it's about to be full the bar moves closer to
the "full end" and you can not add more themes and operator logos
in to it.the appearance is nice though Rating:

A phone at this price is not going to contain every up to date peice
of technology. I have owned this a week and it has been great. It
does everything I want it to. The keypad is a bit on the small side
but after a short amount of time you will still get used to it.
Camera is good for a 2mp. Does what it says on the tin. Rating:

It has got a pretty good keypad even though it is pretty small,
looks good and has the usual walkman player etc, so the music side
of it is good. as for the rest it seams a bit of a con to call this
a se, as the software inside it is terrible, it looks like se but
its so restrictive. such a shame as if this had been sorted before
release it would have been a much better phone. fingers crossed
for an update :( Rating:

First off, everyone bitching about how bad this phone is is spoiled.
How can you expect a phone at such a low cost to do all the things
of a cell twice its price? And if you bitch because of its features,
maybe you should've researched it more. This phone does the job.
It places calls, receives calls and texts just fine. Camera is pretty
good, but seriously if you wanna take a good pic, pull out a real
camera; and if you want better music quality, go buy some vinyls.

i got this phone december 30 2008. at first i thought it's the same
with the w890i exept for the a2dp, 3g,megapix of the cam, and network
capability.but it's not.first it's not stable.if i type fast on
the numpad for text messaging it doesnt give the correct alphabet.
example is when i press the number 6 button twice as fast as possible,
instead of giving me an "n" it gives "mm".second it has low memory.if
i send a big mp3 file via bluetooth,it can only store up to the
memory available at that time.example, i'll send a 6mb mp3 file,
if the unit has only 3mb left on its internal, probably shared,
memory it can only accept that, so the file is incomplete, but it
can be remedied by restarting the phone.third the shortcuts are
limited.if you use the w890 or even my old k810, you can select
wherever you want to shortcut.like sms/inbox or filemanager/music
or no matter how deep it is from the root menu.last is the charging,it
doesn't show you realtime status of the percentage of the battery
being charged.the bar still moves from end to end unlike the other
w series that when it's about to be full the bar moves closer to
the "full end" the appearance is nice though Rating:

SE apparently decided to put the applications, games and music/pictures
in 3 separate places. At times the phone seems to restart for no
obvious reason and I had it crash on me a couple of times. This
phone can only use preinstalled themes leaving users with very little
customization options. The price is also quite high (1400rmb) for
a low-end device. I'd recommend this phone if SE can half its price. Rating:
