Sony Ericsson V600i Review

Phone rating:

The Sony Ericsson V600i is exclusive to Vodafone. It's a high-end 3G phone that looks like a 2G phone, weighing just 102g!

The V600i has some great features - video calling, a music player with FM radio, a 1.3 megapixel camera and video camera, a very high quality screen, Bluetooth and a multitasking capability. It performs well in these areas, but is sadly let down by poor ringtone volume (leading to missed calls) and poor voice quality as a result of the speaker being placed in an unusual position. These are significant downsides.

The V600i is very similar to the K600i and K608i, except that the V600i has a better keypad than the others. However, all three phones share the same audio problems.

Features of the Sony Ericsson V600i include:

  • 3G mobile services - video calling, video streaming, music downloads and fast internet
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, photo light and photo editor
  • Video recorder & sound recorder
  • VideoDJ™ video editor
  • FM radio
  • Media Player - MP3 format
  • MusicDJ™ - polyphonic melody composer
  • Display: TFD, 262,144 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Integrated handsfree speakerphone
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, Email
  • Java games: embedded & downloadable
  • Animated wallpaper & screensaver
  • Multitasking
  • Picture phonebook
  • Extensive calendar & contacts functionality
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, InfraRed, USB
  • Memory: 33 Mbytes
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • Vibration alert
  • Triband GSM plus 3G
  • Size: 104 x 45 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 102g
  • Talktime: 2 hours (3G) - 8 hours (2G)
  • Video calling: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Battery standby: 290 hours (3G) - 370 hours (2G)

Great when it works. If you are lucky enough to hear the ringtone (even using MP3 recording) the phone often turns itself off or disconnects from signal. Happens at least 10 times a day. Been back twice for 'software faults' still does not work. I'm just glad this was a freeby because I would have been gutted paying for it! The way the camera activates with an easily opening slide cover is really annoying.

I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I paid £90 for the V600i and it was worth every penny. The features are great. Does have a slightly fiddly keypad though, but at the price it deserves 5 stars. People who have a bad opinion of this phone.. spend more money!!!

Don't know if it's just a defect on my unit, but the calendar doesn't work as it should. Adding birthdays through Contacts sets the birthdays in Calendar to 1. Jan. 1970 recurring regardless of their proper date. Battery standby time doesn't seem as good as expected. Adding contact details from phone book while writing text message doesn't seem possible.

Got this phone Nov 05. Had lots of Sony Ericsson phones and have always been please. This phone has some cool toys on it. Can connect it via USB to your pc to copy games photo's and ringtones to it easily. Camera is quite good, I like the Panorama mode which tikes 3 photo's and joins them together. The toys work well. I'm a big believer in primary function working really well. That is the point this phone fails. The volume of both the phone and ringtones are not good at all. It improves if I turn on the external speaker but that's of no use when you are trying to have a private conversation. I've never got the auto voice dialing to work via my bluetooth headset and the phone disconnects my headset while I'm trying to dial someone. Worst of all it keeps dropping the network and have to either manually get the phone to search for the network again or turn the phone off and back on again. Who built this Microsoft! It does this between 5-10 times a day! It's not just my phone. My wife has the same phone and hers does exactly the same! As soon as I get time it's off back to the vodafone shop.

Very nice phone, lovely design and shiny black finish. Battery life is good for a 3G phone, memory is a bit limited but here's a tip - if you have the latest copy of i-tunes (available free from the Apple website) you can use the MP3 encoder to downsize your MP3s to a lower bitrate. All you do is go into the preferences and click on "advanced" and then "importing" and then use the custom option to select a low bitrate. You then go back to the library and select the songs you want downsized and click on "convert to mp3". I'd recommend about 56Kbps, it results in songs being about 1.8Mbs each. And there's not as much loss in sound quality as you may expect. By doing this you can fit about 15 songs onto the phone, and still have space for about 20 photos. Onto other bits, the menus are very nicely presented, the earphones have very nice sound quality, the speaker volume isn't that bad, just average I'd say, the camera too is average, but pictures look better when you down load them to a computer. Bluetooth is very fast, better than my old Motorola, and there's a USB cord provided along with software. All in all very good, only complaint is lack of card slot and limited memory. But for only £80 its a splendid deal, go buy!!

so first the site is great and the phone, too. i´ve to say that it´s one of the best you can buy. you only have to take a look on the functions(god helps me). okay some people say the memory is too small, but i think if you relarge the songs you have enough music on your phone. i´ve got a program you can konvert the songs with and am i looking at the size, i just see that they are smaller then 600KB. so now take a result of 37000/600=? yes, it´s 61,6666 so you are having more than 61 songs on the phone and that´s enough on my site. it´s just agreat phone.

Had this phone for only a few hours before I took it back to Vodafone. I had the upgrade option of this phone free or £50 credit added to my tariff … in my mind it just was not worth the £50! The standard tones are far too quiet (and of poor choice). ‘Tried downloading a couple of alternatives that were not much better. The alarm is way too quiet to be effective. Navigation between menus is laggy. No facility to see how the memory is being apportioned between music, text, photos etc. Pointless having a MP3 player and 1.3MP camera with on 32MB of memory and no expansion card slot! Camera and video call on the side of the ‘brick’ far too easy to activate accidentally. On the positives … err .. I suppose the radio is easy to use and provides a decent sound through the stereo headphones supplied (but how many of us want a radio in a phone?). In summary, don’t, under any circumstances, buy this phone … I really don’t know how SE have the nerve to bring this phone onto the market. By the way … I assure you that I am not associated with the phone industry or work for any of the competition.

I gave this phone three stars as overall as a phone it is quite good, but i am a person who thinks that the image of a phone is important, and to me this phone just looks like some sort of TV remote control. Why is it that phone makers can only ever have one good thing about a phone in one go, it is either superb technology but looks horrible, or it looks stylish but is a bit rubbishy. Surely it can't be that difficult to just combine the two!!

The really sad thing is I have had a range of mobile phones for the last 12 yrs and this one is one I cannot wait to get rid off. I have passed all my others onto friends or family. This one will go straight in the bin. The connection software is awful when using the usb cable the phone will switch to screen saver and then the conneciton is lost! Buy something else anything would be better.

Just got this phone yesterday, was going to get the Motorola E770... but when I saw this one thought it is a lot less bulkier and has a few more features. No problems so far with it, except it would of been nice to have a utility to see how much memory is free on it... as that is not available on the phone or the file manager software Sony Ericsson provide. I haven't had any issues with the sound my self though, but that could due to my ringtone being a MP3 rather than the standard ones. Shame I did not get the 30 day free trial of the Vodafone TV service as I am under 18. Anyway this phone is the best I have had, a lot longer battery life than my horrible Nokia N-gage (Battery lasted probably for two hours if not less).

Its been just over a week since I got my phone. The Phone is definetly the best for its price which is £90 on the internet, sites such as The Link, Dixons or Vodafone itself. I have been reading these reviews before I bought my phone and I have made a list of con's & pro's. Firstly the con's:I agree that the battery life is poor and will last only a day or two but my battery life does seem to be improving with time and of course you gotta let it charge for atleast 12 hours first time which should have been included in the manual. The memory is a disappointment as it is limited but if you know how to compress mp3 files to less than a third of the size without losing any noticable quality, you'll be able to store as much as 1&1/2 cds worth (which is enough for me as I store the rest on my PC), this can be done with programs such as Media Blaze Pro that can be downloaded from the internet. Most people complained about the volume... well its not loud loud but it is standard so you can't really complain. The camera quality is rather poor, it can be improved on its settings to get rid of the blue specks, works better in day light. Ok, now the pro's: The mp3 player is great, games and themes are easy to downloaded. The software that comes with it is easy to use and set up. The video conferance is good and clear. Phone is easy to use as I didn't use manual at all, but it does take an hour or two to get used to. Its got all the extras.... world time, calculater, calender, stopwatch, timer and even a small torch. The extra video camera functions are great fun such as black n white, negative etc. The camera frames are good for a laugh. The looks of the phone are nice although it is not small it is average in size. Radio is crystal clear even though its annoying having to plug in the ear peice each time. The TV is excellent and really watchable which I hadn't expected, its what really puts this phone over the top and knocks out competition from other phones such as the Nokia 6230i. The video and media dj I still need to play around with, but seem like great extras. All in all great phone, I wanted to rate it 4.5 out of 5 due to the cons but I have rounded it up to 5 as a lot of silly people have rated it too low! I hope u have found it helpful reading my review, plz let me know, my e-mail address is king_imran_786@hotmail.com.

The menu works better than most SEs I've seen, and had (I've used 5). The functions are great, and there are loads. LOADS- because it is meant to be a business-cum-techno phone. This means it is about the most technically advanced thing you can get that costs less than a PC- which is another thing... He payed just £100 for it without even having to buy any top-up at a certain shop that sounds like ink but has and L at the start... All in all, great phone, great price, great tech

The only drawbacks are the interactive menus ( nokia's one are slightly better) and the 3G services (there is a lot of lag when watching TV which of course is not because of the phone but because of the 3G technology which is just not yet good enough).

Nice feature set, nice packaging, 3G, yadda yadda... but all a waste of time because the processor is not up to it. Laggy! Apparently I txt too fast for this phone (I am a 2 thumb txter, but I'm not 'teenager quick'). Multiple presses typically have a 70% success rate meaning that I often fall a letter short on 3 or 4 click entries in classic txt mode. Predictive is even worse because it misses whole letters of the word which means that the words come out as complete nonsense (eg "or" usually comes out as "s"). This is a processor issue rather than a keying issue. Same thing happens with that nasty little joystick - it just doesn't respond reliably when the phone is 'thinking'. But the worst problem is when it has a popup up that is about to time-out and disappear: if you press quit/okay within about a second before it disapears (that is, between when the processor decides it is exiting, and when it actually does), the keypress is stored and performed after the popup d isappears. Oh dear, you have now activated whatever soft-function was underneath, and oh dear oh dear if it is something bad. That is not acceptable. Mine is going back tomorrow.

I have always been a nokia fan and only got this phone because vodafone sent it to me for free for being with them for a while and at first i was planning on giving it back because you should be able to hear phone calls even on a free phone. However all the problems i originally found with the phone including the poor sound quality and low ring tones are just are result of the settings the phone comes with. FIRST THING TO DO WHEN YOU GET THIS PHONE IS TAKE THE PLASTIC SCREEN COVER OFF. I was quite embarrassed when i found this was the reason for the poor voice quality of callers. To fix the ringtone turn "increasing ring" off in profiles and just put ur favourite mp3 as a ringtone. Plug the headphones in and turn the volume up in the radio. This should fix ringtone and voice calls. I'm still getting use to a non-nokia phone some features could be simplier but overall this is a very impressive phone.

Okay. Just bought this phone from Vodafone. Got free Sky Tv till 31st Jan. So all's cool! paid effectively only 100 pounds for it as 30 pounds is a top up which i just sold to my friend. Anyway, review of phone. First of all, the ring tone is NOT soft. Maybe it's new software or i really got a better batch of phone. It's even considered loud enough for the next dorm room to hear my live Sky Sports Stream when i have the phone speaker side pressed on the table. This is on maximum volume of course. Having the phone up normally in my pocket and its too loud. As one guy said, it's embarassingly loud. Louder than my previous Nokia 6610 and samsung c100. Call quality is good. People calling in has been loud and clear.Too loud in fact. you can set it to 3g and gsm or gsm only. Left it at 3g and gsm for now. No real problems with the reception, loudness or battery life. Battery life hasn't really been tested but as my phone came fully charged by the nice vodafone people, its been very good so far. Been streaming videos like mad (over half hour already) and only 1 bar dropped so far. Camera quality is so-so. Even though i havent owned a camera phone before but i have seen other phones to better effect - D600, D500, SE K750. Anyway, no real problems as this is after all a 100 pound phone. Have to say that the keys are VERY nice to press. Don't like the SMS system though as it requires you to use the joystick more than usual. The joystick moves fine and has no real problem getting to the menu which u want. Pressing the joystick down to select sometimes doesnt hit though. Possibly due to my inexpereince in SE phones. Also it's quite laggy. Which brings me to my next part. The system is LAAAAAGGGGGGYYYYY. When u switch from menu to menu it's laggy. It takes on average of 2 seconds to go from menu to menu. This is bad i have to say. I say this is my biggest gripe as it is quite significant. Could possibly be Vodafone's system but i'm not sure. Anyway, reviwing the phone based on what i have. Physically, the phone is very sleek. It's as long as my C100 when put next to each other but slightly thicker. All in all.For 100 pounds, u get a 3g phone, which is sleek, battery life is good (so far), keypad which is nice to press, and loud speakers which can be semi-blasted to the next few tables in a restaurant when u're streaming the latest football clip. Only real gripe is the lagginess. Can't say i will complain abt the camera and the lack of memory though as that doesnt really bother me.

I've had my v600i about a month now, and was also very disappointed with the very low ringtones, but there is no problem with people hearing me. So, as I'm too lazy to send the phone back, I decided to find a way around this problem, initially by selecting the loudest ringtone available on the phone (even though I didn't like the song), but now I've finally settled on a better solution - installing the software that came with the phone! Once you've done this, using the usb cable you can drag and drop your own songs from your music library to your phone. This is free and cuts out the cost of downloading a ringtone and gives you more choice. I've chosen a song that sounds loud - Job's a good 'un.

I got the replacement phone and within a few days i find it occasionally turning itself off. Its very annoying and unsettling. Watch telly on your phone (free until the end of Jan 2006), download songs from the PC (as long as they are mp3s), games, the lot. It's certainly true that the ringer and handset volume are not as loud as the T610, but so far this hasn't been a problem; I tend to use a Bluetooth headset anyway, which is fine. Battery life is very good (I haven't had to recharge it so far); and to be able to see the battery level (in %) at the push of a button is great too. The design is sleek and elegant, and If you don't need to use the phone in very noisy environments, then this is definitely a great choice. Top work SE!

The calender in de phone is very handy, although I use PalmOne as my daily calender ;-) The phone can easily be connected to the PC, which is a big plus to me! The issue of alledged poor volume is down to realising that there are several functions on the set which can increase the volume to good levels, and knowing what to do with a set where the speaker has been put into the back. All that is needed to deal with the speaker in the back problem is (a) when putting the phone down lie it down on its front and (b) when going out and putting in pocket place phone about face to usual, this prevents the muffling of the speaker. Regarding volume, there are several ways to increase it, there are buttons on the side of the fone which increase the volume, which are usually turned down on delivery, and it is using the Radio function which is the key. I.e. by turning on the radio you can increase the speaker volume to very high indeed. The only problem is, if you want to listen to the radio you have to turn it down because it is too loud to listen to through the headfones, and then you have to remember to turn it back up again when you exit radio and go back to normal phone. Designers definitely slipped up here, but can be overcome. Oh yes, and you cant use the radio without plugging in the phones so when exiting radio you have to pull out the phones or you wont hear much volume on the phone set. A bit of a potch, but a great phone aside from that. Taking pictures with phones has never been a great idea, I still use a 35mm SLR slide film camera, top quality, for a bit more effort. Get a scanner and Bob's your Uncle. Also, as the headfones for the radio also provide a hands free function for the fone, when I go out I keep it on hands free all the time so do not miss any calls, excellent amplification through the fones and can hear and speak very clearly and loudly. If you are self conscious of course this may not do, in which case this is not the phone for you.

I've just changed to this phone as I thought I would give something else a try other than a Nokia. This phone is in a word excellent. Not the best but still excellent. I did at first think that the volume is a real problem, but I then realised what it was that made the volume a problem and I'm sure it is what the other reviewers did as well. When I used the phone for the first time, the protective film on the screen actually covered the front top speaker, with the film covering the speaker, the sound did indeed feel inadequate. Once I relaised my stupid mistake, I removed the platsic film and the phone's sound was as good as any. I believe this is the same scenario experienced by other reviewers who thought the sound was rubbish. The rest of the phone was very good as far as functionaility is concerned. Buttons are just slight the worng shape for me but may be right for others. The loud speaker is fine but when turned to maximum, the speaker struggles just a little. Despite these faults, I think it is still a 4 star phone. My very first phone was a Ericsson, then I had 2 Nokias and now I'm back to Ericsson. Too close to call between the two manuafacturers but I wouldn't get any other brands except these two.

I have read a LOT of reviews on the SE V600i, lots of them being very negative. But I decided to get the phone anyway. So let's clear up some of the mysteries: 1. Ringtone Volume is NOT poor. Just remember that the ringtone volume is dependent on the phone's volume and a seperate setting for the specific ringtone 2. Hearing the other person is NOT a problem. Seeing point 1. 3. Keys are NOT that small: I was used to T610 and these keys are almost the same size even though it is slightly more tightly spaced. 4. The top egde of the phone near the speaker is a bit sharp, but if you don't PRESS it against your ear, you will not hurt yourself. 5. Camera quality is very adequate. If you want a really good camera and don't need UMTS access - buy the new K750i, or wait for SE W900i 6. Remember that as far as I can figure out - setting up the V600i with a PDA for FAX send/receive is NOT possible. This modem seems to be different to the T610's, which supports faxing. 7. Setting up this phone with a PDA to access Internet is something that Vodafone techies know very little about, but is entirely possible. Just make sure that the GPRS dialling number on the the PDA is *99***[CIDnumber]# and that the dialstring starts with a reset command. Mine is currently set to z;+cgdcont=[CIDnumber],"IP","internet". Capital letter Z without a semicolon apparently can also be used as reset command. 8. Yes, typing SMS is indeed a bit slower than what I was used to in the T610, but after 5 days, I am used to it. 9. Battery life seems to be much shorter than advertised, but I use quite a lot of bluetooth, and phone a lot. Why only give 4 stars?: because of difficulty in getting the connection with the PDA to work because the V600i's provider (Vodafone) don't know the phones they sell!! Also because I can't send and receive my faxes directly to my PDA. I need to divert the fax calls to my mailbox. Otherwise a very nice phone. So I will NOT be returning my phone like some idiots did who didn't even bother to go through a little trouble to make things work.

This phone is a little difficult to place. It has great pluses but also significant minuses, depending on what kind of user you are and what you're after. The Pluses: I found the menu system unique at first but really easy to find your way around. There are some really great ideas (such as an instantly accessible and comprehensive calls list, minimizable media player, one-button agenda access for the current day and for silent mode and so on) but nothing that's really all that different from other phones. The best part is the ease of use and the very clear screen. It's a nice size, really light and sturdy, synchronizes VERY easily with Microsoft Outlook with similarly easy-to-use software and is, in general, a smart and good phone with a far better dictionary than my old Nokia used to have. The camera is fine for most shots (it is after all still only a phone) and has a good flash which can be turned on as a stand-alone torch too - a great idea. Minuses: First and foremost, it is quiet. Not for calls or music, but for ring volume. I am 22 with acutely good hearing on one side, and I still don't hear it ring unless I'm in a quiet environment. I have tried both the installed ringtones and loud songs that I have put on the phone - to no avail. The sound quality is great when it is audible, especially with the headphones, but it simply does not go loud enough without. Apart from that, the rest are relatively minor quibbles. The keys are sometimes not very good at picking up multiple pushes when they are in quick succession after each other, which can be a pain if you text fast, but is easily remedied by taking a bit more care. The very prominent "Vodaphone Live" and "Video call" buttons on either side of the screen are perhaps a bit too easy to press by accident, but that hasn't happened to me too often now that I am more used to the phone. Although the calendar function is really clear and quite powerful, my main problem is that it cannot edit recurring appointments from Outlook - which is most of mine. It can therefore sometimes feel more like a calendar note than an actual editable agenda. And the menus seem a little less customizable than I would like. All in all, it's a smart, powerful phone which is easy to use and does a whole lot, but perhaps not quite enough. Symbolic of this is the lack of memory expandability: for a phone which can play MP3s, it's a bit daft to only have enough space for less than 10 - and then there's NO room for photos or video. It seems like a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades, but really it's only a Master of the basic functions. Everything else feels just a tad compromised. It will do the trick, but it may take some effort from your behalf to get used to it (and you'll have to keep it on vibrate mode while you do).

Downside for me is that the memory is pretty small (a removable memory stick would have been great but that would also have entailed having a slightly more substantial back cover and locking mechanism) -so there's not much space for mp3 music tracks. I filled up with 6 tracks and had no space left for taking any photos. The camera is not up to much but I carry a separate digtal camera with me wherever I go anyway. As for the volume problems reported on these pages, no problems there......but I am still young and don't have hearing problems. Buy it? Yes!

Design-wise it's perfect imho, buttons are well laid out and the build quality is excellent, especially when compared to other more expensive 3G phones out there. user interface is a breeze to use, navigation key is very solid and the phone is quite quick at navigating menus. screen is a fine size and very crisp. camera quality is a bit poor but if i want to take pictures i'll buy a camera, it does have a neat second camera for video calls though. has a brilliant flash light that can be used with the camera or as a torch. basically, the only thing that lets this phone down is its speaker volume, a bit on the quiet side so if you're on a crowded bus and you feel the need to annoy everyone with your stupid ringtone then this is probably not the phone for you, carry a boom box on your shoulder instead, that said the speaker is good quality. other than that i think this is an excellent little phone, oh memory is 32mb and not expandable so that could be a problem for people who don't have an mp3 player, otherwise it's a great phone packed with tons of features!

Everything works perfectly, and if you are an expert in computers you will enjoy it at the max. By adjusting the pictures and the MP3s at the proper quality and file-size, for use in a mobile phone, the on-board memory becomes more than enough for everything. 3G behavior is top. Battery life, very good so far. With the use of the Sony Ericsson DSS-25 Desk Synchronisation Stand(for 38 Euros), you have everything at the plate. Sound quality top, body quality top, display quality superb. Image quality, I did not had the time to make extended tests, but looks above average for mobile, I will soon post more details about it. Any way so far so good, I can say that I got nothing than the best. Its not a phone for every one, its mostly a useful mobile extension of your computer. For people who are not that familiar with computers, they will appreciate the phone less, as a descent cell phone and nothing more. The point is that the treasure behind this model is their three faces of it. 1)Good looking, 3G , strong battery , top sound quality . 2)Your computers best friend, with Sony Ericsson DSS-25 Desk Synchronisation Stand, it becomes the extension of your computer, mail – data – outlook – you name it . 3)Fantastic radio , believe it or not, even with mono - stereo selection & RDS, Java , games ,Mp3 , and compatible with any file format available . 4)I love the all pack, it is like to was designed just for me. Thanks SE & Vodafone , really nice pack of futures and amazing look in comparison with the K600.

Average!! That's all u can say about this phone. Only reason i got this is cos i needed something simple and compact so i can use it alongside my nokia 7710. I was hoping though that i'd be able to use it as mp3 player too but memory isnt enough even though it does have a mp3 player. The screen is also a bit small but i guess after using the 7710 any screen is small next to that. 3G works well but only when reception's good but that's down to vodafone not the phone. Camera on my 7710 is also much better but that's not why i got this phone so cant complain about that. If u dont need any fancy features than this is a good phone but would have been nice if it had one or two stand out features like expandable memory.

I got this phone cos sonyericsson are known for their quality cameras but the V600 has got to be one of the worst megapixel camera phones i've come across. It's just so disappointing and the photos look very poor when you're viewing them on your pc. Dont be fooled into getting this because it has a megapixel camera. It's no better than a standard vga camera. Honestly. The memory is also a big letdown cos 32mb is simply not enough to use it as an mp3 player. The only good is the radio which i never use anyway. I actually avoided getting the new samsung Z500 cos i didnt want to pay more and thought this was better value for money. Looks like i'm gonna be having a little chat with vodafone customer service...
