Sony Ericsson T630 Review

Phone rating:

Note: the T630 is now obsolete. For a modern twist consider the Sony Ericsson W580i Black or Sony Ericsson W580i Pink or Sony Ericsson W580i Grey or Sony Ericsson W580i White from Dial-a-Phone. Check out their Sony Ericsson W580i deals.

The Sony Ericsson T630 is a refined and updated version of the popular T610.

Like the T610, the T630 is a sophisticated phone incorporating a built-in camera, Bluetooth™ wireless technology, a large full colour screen (65,536 colours). It's very slightly smaller than the T610, and build quality is, if anything, better than the T610.

A key difference between the T610 and the T630 is the upgraded screen. The T630 uses a TFT display which makes for crystal clear clarity and superb colour reproduction. One of the problems with the T610 was that the display was hard to read in sunlight - the new display should be no problem at all, even in bright light.

The integrated camera can be activated in one click, with one more click to take a picture. Sony Ericsson's new QuickShare™ technology enables you to easily share pictures with your PC or other phones, using Bluetooth™, email, MMS or data cable.

Overall, the T630 is a success, building on a solid platform and improving the features that needed to be improved. An excellent phone that is outclassed only by the new K700i.

Features of the Sony Ericsson T630 include:

  • Colour display (65,536 colours, 128 x 160 pixels)
  • Integrated camera
  • Bluetooth™, infrared and cable connectivity
  • Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) - send pictures and sound like text messages
  • Downloadable 32-voice polyphonic & mono ringtones, plus ringtone editor
  • Downloadable Java games
  • WAP 2.0 (GPRS), email
  • High Speed Data (HSCSD - up to 28.8 kbps)
  • Speed dialling & voice dialling
  • Predictive text (T9)
  • Mobile chat
  • Voice memo / recorder
  • Picture phone book
  • Exchangeable covers
  • Wallpaper, screensaver and themes - all downloadable
  • Calculator, calendar, alarm
  • Memory: 2 Mbytes
  • Size: 102 x 43 x 17 mm
  • Weight: 92g
  • Battery standby: 315 hours
  • Battery talktime: 14 hours
  • Vibration alert
  • Tri band

got this phone yesterday, and havn't put it down since. there's nothing too overstriking about the look of the phone, yet it carries somewhat of a classy element to it...the way it shoud be. the display is sharp and images are shown well on it. the camera isn't its best feature, but that's why digital cameras were invented. the themes that come with are somewhat disappointing, but further (free) themes can always be downloaded from websites, which i've since done. the ringtones are very cool. different, yet sweet to the ears! also convenient shortcuts can be activated depending on which direction the analog stick is pressed...very convenient. it loses out on the 6230 by lacking a video mode and mp3 player. but the lack of features is made up by the sheer quality of the phone. it's not common, it looks amazing and does everything a modern phone should, and more...

I bought the phone yesterday because my old phone (P800) had a flash disk crash. I wanted a phone that would allow me to backup all my sms messages, preferrably with free software. I stumbled upon an open source tool called fma to control several phones. I now have a working system connecting my T630 via bluetooth. I can even control my mouse using the joystick of the T630 via bluetooth! I really love it. However I won't give it 5 stars, since it has less flexibility than my P800. I haven't figured out how to access the filesystem yet. It can record voice, even from a conversation. So I think it is an excellent phone!

A great phone, looks great, feels great and is easy to use. It has a few flaws (or maybe im just picky?!), but il mention the good points first. it looks very stylish, the ice white or the jet black style both are as aesthetically pleasing as each other. The alarm function still operates (if you have set it) even if the phone is turned off - and snooze lasts 9 mins The fact you can play a round of golf on the bus (against someone or not) impresses me. (lol) The screen is impressive. good display, very clear, but watch u dont scratch the screen (like me :-( ) You can record phone calls. handy if you want to "prove a point" or remember some important info, like your girlfriends new handbag....... data can be easily transferred via e mail, infra red and bluetooth. T9 dictionary can be 'taught' that is it remembers your words if you spell it out. i would have gave it 5 stars but heres why i didnt: The screen gets scratched too easily, meaning you would need a case to protect it. The Camera, although offers good versatility in different light conditions, is pretty average to say the least. Texting can be a pain sometimes, particularly when you press the 'back' button by mistake. If you recieve a long text, sometimes the phone stalls for about a minute before you want to return to the main screen after you have read it. Memory capacity is pretty average. Overall im really happy with my phone, however id prefer the K700i as it has all of the features of this phone, plus an FM radio and the ability to play MP3s. i like my gadgets. Thanks for reading my review, hope it was worthwhile

All 5 Stars ***** beacuse this is an outstanding phone. It is much better than its rival Nokia 6610i. Its Camera Quality is Excelent both in normal and Night Mode. Colours are sharp and near to nature. 120 x 160 TFT screen display is excelent in bright daylight.Sound quality is excelent. Bluetooh is outstanding. Music DJ is very instrusting. It also can records calls and sounds around you as much as memory is available. It supports 32 polyphonic sound. Its WAP/GPRS is also outstanding. The featue i like most that its saves your unsent SMS/MMS (due to network problem or any other reason) which is not available in most of the Nokia Sets. Its Battery life very good. Pictures taken by the Camera can be saved on your computer via infrared or Bluetooth. Over all this is a great phone.

Have had this phone for 3 months now. Really nice diaplay, functional also in bright daylight. Quick menues compared to older SE phones (use to have T68i and T300). BUT SE has removed the most beloved function "My shortcuts" and replaced it with a stupid function called "My friends". Also the green (yes) and the red (no) keys have been replaced with keys showing a line which have a lot of other functions - really confusing still after 3 months. I have bought a T610 to get the old ways of functioning back, and will definitely consider at Nokia when the T610 wears out - unless SE decides to bring back the normal functions of the yes and no keys in coming models.

Buy this phone! It's jam packed with features and the online support for setting up e-mail, MMS and WAP couldn't be easier! I replaced a Nokia 8310 which rarely worked well and constantly froze.. Deleting any saved information. The Sony is cheap too; I paid 224 including 24Hr delivery from Pixmania.com for a sim free black edition. Downside: The software isn't great but if you have Bluetooth on your Pc you don't need to use it.

Hi everyone! I bought my T630 last week to replace my T610. If you're thinking about buying a T630 as well, then you'd better read my honest opinion. First of all I admit that I LOVE THIS PHONE, so you'll read rather a positive description. 1. If you want to take beautiful pictures: buy a digital camera. The camera integrated in T630 IS MADE FOR TAKING PICTURES FOR MMS!!! Not for professional photographing! So please stop crying for the bad quality - the pictures are just perfect if you want to send or keep them on your phone. 2. Those people can't use its joystick who have no fingers or just don't really want to get used to it (see blindfoldd Nokia fans) :) The joystick makes the use of the phone a lot quicker and easier - you can surf (select and navigate) without putting your finger to another button. I think the stick of T610 was a bit better as it was a half mm longer, but you won't have any problem with this one I'm sure. 3. The buttons won't lose their characters since they're printed on the inner side. 4. If you don't like the white coloured T630, take a look at the black one - I think it looks much much better, especially the lights are cool. 5. The display is much better than that of any Nokia today, but Samsung phones have even better displays! 6. Never buy a T630 at Vodafone - Live! menu is the worst thing than can happen to a phone like this :) So that was my "short" opinion, contact me if you have a question: domjan82@hotmail.com

I have been using this phone for a week now. I have the LIQUID BLACK colored phone and it looks very stylish. I bought it in India for about US$219 and I think it is a great phone at that price. The camera is OK. I feel the polyphonic ring tones could have been louder. All in all an excellent phone. I have found no issues with the joystick or menu usage.

This is my first Sony Ericsson and to be honest, i wish i`d stuck to Nokia. Navigation is poor, it takes more keystrokes to perform simple tasks compared to the Nokia`s. The software platform itself seems to be sluggish and suffers with 'Lag' constantly or just locks up so you have to knock the phone off and then back on causing you to lose what you were doing in the first place ... VERY ANNOYING!! Reception is NON EXISTENT, which makes it nigh on impossible to sent messages, have conversations etc etc. All it`s good at is displaying the SOS CALLS ONLY sign. Downloaded ringtones playback really quiet whereas the pre-programmed ones playback really loud, can`t use recordings as ringtones, no video, picture quality of camera is VERY poor compared to other phones. Memory is poor ... really NOT impressed It`s gonna take something special for me to own another Sony Ericsson.

Bought this phone sim free to replace my Nokia 7250i but after just one week I'm going back to the Nokia. Sure it looks much nicer, has a superb screen and fancy graphics, but navigation is horrible. It cannot be customised (other than wallpapers and sounds) and requires many times the keystrokes to do the same tasks. Profile handling, caller groups, phone book, call logs are all inferior to the Nokia. Text messaging is also inferior storing far fewer messages, not time/date stamping outbound messages. If you want the better screen, or Bluetooth, get this, if you want the better phone get the Nokia.

Not long had it.My 1st Sony Ericsson. Got it free on renewing my contract. Looks very sexy in black and the colour screen is easy to read. Generally the phone is fiddly to use and the battery life is not nearly as good as my Nokia 6310i. However, as the Sony is only a standby phone in case I lose the Nokia this isn't a huge issue. Don't really need the camera which is good as the resolution of saved images is poor compared with other phones I have seen. The menus all seem to be fairly logical and navigation is relatively pain free although doesn't beat Nokia for overall ease of use. Overall, not a bad little phone and looks great in black.

I have had this phone for about a year now and it's ok. The first few weeks i had it the camera was great but unfortunatly, the camera has become blurred and fuzzy. At first i thought that there was dust on the camera screen. However, the camera is not very good quality. Aswell as this, the phone can contain very little memory. I find that when ive taken a really good picture i cant store it because the memory is full. Currnetly i have approx. 25 pictures, which, compared to other phones is quite bad. If you like keeping txts, u probably wont be able to as i have found because your sms memory is full. I like the stylish look of the phone (i have the crystal colour.) The games included, like mini-golf wil keep you occupied and the ring tones are good. Overall, 3 Stars for Sony Ericsson. Well done. -josh

Hello everyone. I've been a Sony Ericsson user ever since, yes old sony ericsson models are slow in messaging.I keep on reading the reviews here before deciding on getting the T630. I bought it though and i've been using it for 2 months now. Ok. FIRST: I would suggest that you charge your batteries for 16 hrs. straight. Turn the phone off. After charging, use it and let the battery drain by normal use. Make sure the battery is empty before charging the phone. Do that for three consecutive times and you'll see the battery will last longer.I gave this phone a 5 star rating because I found out that its not slow when you type messages. The menu response it good.It doesnt hang at all. It never switches itself off. Display is good. The camera is better comparing with the Z600,K500i and T610. Reception is better.Just try to keep 30 pictures in your "my pictures" to prevent the phone from lags and hangs. Use your bluetooth to transfer the pictures. I guess any phone with a 2MB memory would hang if there are a lot of pictures saved inside the phone right?SECONDLY: Build quality is very good. sometimes when you type in a message there is a creaky sound maybe because the keypad is hard to press. As for reception, the signal strength is strong.Crystal clear audio during calls. The ringtone volume is not that strong though so i would suggest that you keep the vibrating alert on when you are out.GAMES: The games are so much fun. They dont hang at all. Response with the keypad is great. OVERALL: If you intend a basic mobile phone with basic features. I would recommend the T630.But if you are the type of user who wants your phone to be a portable photo album. Better look something else. I would suggest that with the T630 after saving any pictures transfer it to your computer to save memory. This is one of the BEST SONY ERICSSON MOBILE PHONES FOR ME. Hope this review helps. Have a great day!

Overall an excellent phone, the screen display is excellent, the screen is sufficiently large, it's got all the connectivity options including bluetooth, IR, USB etc. The design is sleek and looks great (especially the black model), the battery life is very good, it's also priced well. My only complaints are, 2 MB memory is pretty less, 5 MB would have hit the sweet spot, the camera output quality though better than T610, is nothing much to write home about. But all-in-all, it's probably the best phone in it's class.

I gave this phone 3 stars but if it hadn't broken down on me it would receive a strong and confident 5. I was playing b-ball and left it in a protective pouch, in a protected, zippered section of a closed bag. After I came to enter in a girl's number I found the screen completely destroyed. As everyone knows that piece is the most expensive part of the phone with costs close to 25% of theoriginal phone. Now my love affair has stopped with it and I expect to buy a Nokia 3100 - I like white phones - and live with it. If you're in the market and do no physical activity or you leave your phone in a bomb-sheltered box then buy it and don't look back. If however you live in the real world where you might accidentally drop or sit on it... be cautionned. Handle with care.

Upgraded from a Nokia 7650 but to be honest, its at best a sideways move rather than a step up. Phone looks good and menu a little fiddly but fine. The major disappointment for me is the camera. The camera on the Nokia 7650 was brilliant but on the T630 you struggle to get a clear chrisp picture and nightview is bad. All in all, i'll probably go back to Nokia once my time with this one is up as they seem to be advancing better.

After my T610 had a somewhat unfortunate encounter with my washing machine (and then my tumble dryer), I decided to upgrade this the T630, since it was being offered at a cheaper price than the T610 on a certain website. For a start, it looks so much better when compared with the T610 (I have the Liquid Black model), the joystick feels less flimsy, the screen looks better, and the Power button is easy to press, as opposed to the T610's fiddly little thing. As far as the software goes, it's pretty much identical to the T610's, with a few minor adjustments here and there. It feels quite a bit sturdier too. So, if you're swaying between this and the T610, this is the way to go, it's worth a couple of extra quid anyday.

Hiya. I have got the Samsung A800 and absolutley love it. I love the clamshell design and it is just so small and cute. I am thinking of getting this phone in the nexy few weeks. But fist, i have a few questions and this seams like the sight to do it. 1)My samsung lets me search for a number instead of just a name, which is great because when someone phones one of my friends and they dont know the number, i dont have to go scrolling through the names i can just enter the number and can usually see from entering the first few digits if my phone holds the number. DOES THIS PHONE ALLOW YOU TO DO THAT? 2)A lot of paople have been complaining about the lack of memory. I only really use my phone for texting and a few quick calls. WILL THIS BE A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ME? 3)The joystick used in the phone already has set destinations, e.g left - new message etc. My samsung allows me to change where the four sides take me to. CAN I CHANGE THIS FEATURE ON THIS PHONE? 4)DOES THE PHONE SAVE THE MESSAGES THAT YOU HAVE SENT TO THE OUTBOX? 5) DOES THE PHONE HAVE VOICE RECORDING AND CAN YOU USE THESE RECORDINGS AS RINGTONES? Thank you very much and I would very much appreciate it if someone replied to my questions, as I cant decide which phone to buy!!! Thanks again xx

From a first look the T630 looks very similar to the Nokia 6230 epecially in black. But it only has a third of the memory. I thought to myself why is it that Sony ericsson has decided to leave video recording of this phone as most of its competitors do. i would have bought a Nokia 6230 apart from the Sony ericsson was cheaper so..... i got a white 1 as i thought it would look good as i also have an ipod. i must say when you whip it out in the dark and the lights go on it looks top notch. i like the menu on this phone and i disagree with people who say it takes a long time to access things. Nokia's are much the same. the only reason why people say this is because they are not used to it. All in all this phone is excellent but the new Sony ericsson k500 looks even better so if you're thinkin of buying this phone take a look at the k500 as it has a video recorder.

I recently bought this unit this july, and boy what an upgrade from a Nokia 6610! I bought the black one. first thing I noticed is how big the difference from my previous phone. The screen is crisp and clear. Very big difference! On usability, its a lot of getting used to the UI, especially converting from Nokia to SE. Although it only took me 3 hours (continous) to get to know it. BT works fine, and audio quality's great! Camera is ok though, afterall, we shouldn't expect a cybershot-captured pic to be the same with this phone! Signal strength here in the Philippines is comparable to the Nokia sets. No problem with GPRS also. Setting up with Globe Telecom is no problem. Although the site couldn't give much themes and downloads for SE, I think they're still on the impression that Nokia rules the Pi. duh! Summing up, its a great phone with great features. Again, don't expect the camera to give high-quality results. If you want, you can always buy a cybershot...

YES, yes I was waiting for this phone like a year! so finnaly i bought it on date : 16/07/2004 so as u can see , not long ago i really was happy when I bought it. the reason why i bught it because: my friend has a T610 yes i know its not the same phone but nearly the same 2)I needed a new phone because I wanted style and good featers (wich the T630 has offcourse) and it was a replacement for my old nokia 3310 (wich is very old) 3)and I wanted a phone with built in Camera (we will catch up later with that) and color screen. --------------------------------------- so here goes my story I was happy when I bought it. I was nicely packing the T630 out. plugged it in for load the battey's for like 24 hours. The day after i went with my friend to Belcompany to buy te same phone as mine !!! so we both were happy. --------------------------------------- so here goes my REVIEW First i was amazad with the colors (not so good as my sister's samsung E700) then there was the sound wich was really good i loved the design bleutooth works fine -> no errors has been found The reason i couldnt give the T630 a 5 star was because of the camera (told u we will catch up with that) and the low memory capacity -> The camera : low resolution not sharp images ( it looks sharp at the first look, but when u take a picture, about 3 seconds after that it will totally leak out colors) but for the rest it is a great phone --- normally i would bought the T? (don't know what its number is) but i couldnt wait that long some information about the new T : (from mobile-review) In September we will see T-series model, it will be built on the same platform as K700. The improvements will be concluded in presence of exchangeable memory cards (hotswap will be supported), camera will turn into 1.3mpx one. The manufacturer will most likely claim that this model will have around 64mb of memory on board. The price will range from 360-370 Euros for wholesale buyers. Form-factor will remain the same, color and designer's solution will be similar to T610. Let's find out if my predictions will come true or no, it is always interesting to suppose what will happen tomorrow. Thank u from reading a review from a 14 year old kid who lives in belgium :) greetzz

I had a T610 until my girlfriend upgraded to a Z600 but didn't like it so we swapped. I then discovered I HATE CLAM PHONES so when an upgrade was due I went for the T630. This review would have been a definate 5 stars but I feel that Tmobile have spoilt the phone with their branding which now extends to changing the function of the more button so instead of giving a quick selection menu it now connects to Tzones. After speaking to SE it seems that this function may be permanent and not correctable by a firmware upgrade. I don't understand why SE allow there phones to be crippled like this, I do realise I have to put up with a certain amount of branding but feel that changing how the phone functions is too much. So the next phone change will be away from Tmobile, and if I can't get an uncrippled SE phone at the time back to my T39M and Virgin sim.

Unlike my mates, I go through about 6-10 phones a year. Unlike my mates I have never owned a Nokia phone, opting instead for vendors such as Sharp, Samsung or Motorola. This time I opted for a Sony Ericsson T630 and this time I might keep this one. It's got nearly everything I wanted in a phone (except video recording and mp3/wma playback). But minor niggles aside, its capabilities are impressive. The only thing I would complain about is the poor quality of the camera. I used to own older phones such as the Sharp GX10i and the Motorola V300 with better camera quality, even though the T630 has the same amount of colours and better resolution. However, the phone connects wirelessly to almost anything and it handles superbly. I have the Black T-mobile version and it is simply one of the stylish phones I\'ve ever owned (Nothing as sexy as a Samsung!) So, cheers Sony Ericsson, I'll be coming back soon!

Just got the T630 as a replacement to the T610 (Upgraded due to the charger exploding whilst charging!). Here is my initial opinion... Phone design: Almost identical in design and feel to the old T610 but more robust. The T630 has plastic covering which is less prone to scratching than the metal-covered T610. The T630 also sports a new larger keypad - which is good as I found the keys on the T610 very small and fiddly and prone to sticking. The camera section on the rear has been improved also with a new mirror for taking self-portraits (If you're into that kind of thing!) Phone Features. The first thing I noticed when switching on my new T630 for the first time was the improved TFT display. The colours are much more vivid now and the screen can be seen clearly in any light. The user interface and menu system is identical to the old model. The main menu is simple and easy to navigate using the central joystick. Another new feature in the T630 is the 'Friends' feature. In here you can put your favourite contacts and manage the way that you communicate with easily (eg. Email, MMS, SMS or chat). The phone now supports a chat application which allows groups of people to chat in real time in a chat room environment. The rest of the features are fairly bog-standard for a phone of this specification (such as Bluetooth, Polyphonic ring tones, etc.). On the whole, a very user-friendly phone and easy to get to grips with. Games: The phone comes with V-Rally2 installed but more games can be downloaded for it easily. The phone has full Java support for gaming.

Overall, I like the phone, but there are three areas which could do with improving. 1. The ringtones are terrible. Why don't they provide 20 standard tones leaving users to download the melodic ones. Everyone I know with an ericsson switches it to use the 'old phone' ringtone. 2. There is nowhere in the phone book to put a home address for a contact. Nokia phones allow this. Instead, there are fields for Title and Company. Duh!! This sounds like a phone meant for reps not home users. 3. The calendar doesn't support events properly. When I put in a birthday, I should only have to put in a date. Instead I have to put in a start date and a duration. What a pain. Apart from those points, I'm happy with it. The battery life is so much better than my previous phone.

The camera quality is poor particularly in low light, not what i expected from Sony. The "short cuts" are long cuts. Everything you do with this phone seems to take an extra 3 or 4 buttons presses compared to most other phones.Wap access is also less reliable. Hi All, My previous phone was a Siemens S55. I was very happy with it. Unfortunately it got lost in Switzerland so I decided to buy another brand. In the first look, 2 MB dynamic memory, 16 bit colors, 32 polyphonic sound, etc. looked great. However, the first day I bought it I was about to cry. Because the phone book entry is very stupid. You can only add one business phone, one e-mail address, one fax number, no postal address, no birthday, etc. And later I have found out that its 510 phonebook capacity is also very stupid. If you add one mobile and one business phone for a contact it takes 2 phonebook capacity. In my Siemens S55 I had many phonebook entries and there was no such limitation, although it had a 600K memory only. Moreover, in the calendar there is option of recurrence. For instance, if you add an anniversary and would like that it repeats everyyear, you cannot do it. However, in my old Siemens S55 you could adjust the recurrence for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly periods. I have been trying to find some people mentioning these stupid features, however couldn't succeed. I think people haven't tried Siemens phones. The first thing I'll do is to get rid off this Sony Ericsson T630 phone and buy a Siemens phone again. Have a nice day. Mehmet

I don't like the feel of this phone. It feels cheap, bad plastics, not robust enough, and the keys are so close together that I find myself hitting the wrong key time and time again when trying to text. The joystick is awful and very hard to use accurately. I can see it breaking off very easily. The screen however is good, great colours and easy to see in sunlight. The software seems acceptable enough and it is good that you can see who your text message is from, before you decide to open it. I originally bought this phone sim-free as I wanted a bluetooth phone for the car. I wish I had gone for the Motorola V600. I do not see this Sony T630 as being an adult phone - I believe it is more for the teenage market. All in all, I am going back to my year old Samsung which is a delight to use, even though it does not have bluetooth. The Samsung's metal casing is robust - hardly a scratch on it after all this time - and the signal strength is far superior to that of the Sony T630. I will be selling my Sony sim-free and buying the Motorola V600 at the earliest opportunity.
