Sony Ericsson K810i Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A slimmed-down version of Sony Ericsson's hugely successful K800i, the K810i shares the amazing 3.2 megapixel Cyber-Shot™ camera with autofocus and bright xenon flash that made the K800i arguably the best camera phone so far. Also comes with a music player, 3G video calling, expandable memory and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. The K810i can be your digital camera and MP3 player as well as a mobile phone. It costs more than the K800i but is slimmer and lighter. Available in black, red or ivory.

Review: May 2007. Updated June 2009.

The Sony Ericsson K810i Cyber-shot™ is virtually the same as the hugely successful and best-selling K800i. The two key differences are that the K810i is slimmer - 17mm instead of 22mm - and that the buttons have a new design. It's good to see that the phone is smaller and lighter, since that was one of the main complaints about the K800i. However, the new keypad has small circular buttons that are quite widely separated and are not obviously an improvement over the old keypad design. Perversely, Sony Ericsson have kept the fiddly joystick that really should have been changed.

Apart from these cosmetic modifications, not much has changed in the year since the launch of the K800i. Its photographic capabilities are the same as the K800i. In other words it's one of the best camera phones currently available. The camera is 3.2 megapixels with autofocus (to enable your images to be sharper), a powerful xenon flash (better than the weak LCD flashes used on most phones), high quality optics (as you'd expect from Sony, one of the leading makers of digital cameras) and a 16x digital zoom. One new feature is something that Sony Ericsson call "Photo fix", which adjusts the light balance, brightness and contrast of the image - a useful feature if you don't have access to image-editing software on a PC. The camera also has Sony Ericsson's BestPic™ feature which lets you automatically take nine photos in a second, so that you can choose the best one to keep - handy for moving subjects. There's also a picture stabiliser, which helps to reduce camera shake. One design improvement is that the camera cover is now recessed, avoiding the problem that the K800i had with the lens cover sliding off. The video camera is also of excellent quality, recording at QVGA resolution. A video editor is included, so that you can edit videos on the phone.

The screen resolution is the same as the K800i, and is standard for high-end phones at 320 x 240 pixels and 262k colours. It's an excellent display.

In addition to the photographic capabilities, the K810i is also an excellent performer in other areas. It has a built-in music player that supports MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ and WMA formats, and also a stereo RDS FM radio. Audio quality is good, especially using the supplied headphones or an optional Bluetooth wireless stereo headset. It's also possible to buy an adaptor to plug in standard 3.5mm headphones.

The K810i is a 3G phone, and supports video calling as well as high speed downloads at up to up to 384 kbps. In common with the K800i, there's no EDGE capability, so 2G data transfer speeds are slow. Internal memory is a reasonable 64 Mbytes (enough for around 16 music tracks), so you'll want to buy a Memory Stick Micro™ card, which are available in sizes up to 2 Gbytes. Battery life is excellent for a 3G phone.

In conclusion, the K810i is an excellent phone, and offers a lighter, slimmer alternative to the K800i. Both are outstanding camera phones, with near identical functionality, but cosmetic differences. The K810i is retailing at higher prices than the K800i, so if cost is an issue choose the K800i. If you want to stand out from the crowd with a newer thinner phone, choose the K810i. The new K850i offers a 5 megapixel camera. Update: the K810i is now obsolete, but the next blockbuster camera phone from SE will be the Sony Ericsson Satio, expected in October 2009.

Features of the Sony Ericsson K810i include:

  • 3G video calling
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, xenon flash and 16x digital zoom
  • Video recorder (164 x 144 pixels, 30 frames per second)

Good phone but with errors occuring easily. I've seen many threads about errors on their k800i / k810i, and my mom is one of the 'victims'. She did not modify the phone or anything (uses it for calling, sms, and camera only) but after using it around 1-2 years, the menu occured some errors (apps cant be saved, camera won't launch, and sms not working)

What a superb phone!!! I thought, after reading reviews, that it would be a slab of a thing with keys totally unsuitable for my sausage like digits. Was I wrong, it's beautiful. My last phone was a D750i ( a K750i in drag ) and I liked that, but the quality of the screen on the K810 is brilliant. Battery life very good, but then it lives in a cradle when I'm in the car so it gets charged there. Then only slight niggle is the size of the letters on the keypad, they're a tad small for my aging eyesight, although they do light up nicely.

I have been waiting for this phone since long, and as i bought it finally, i think it was the best decision to buy it, camera is exceptional, memory is good enough, but you can always upgrade it with memory, Mp3 player is good, and gives you almost all features which a normal working person needs. Forget abt that keypad, u'll get used to it in minutes and it just adds to the visual beauty of this phone. Still, My suggestion is that if u need a stylish, pomping phone then buy a samsung, if you are after features, go for SE and gives u a good resale value too.

I'm very disappointed with this phone as i have owned a Samsung D600 before it and find the Samsung's video camera function to be much better. I also found the Samsung's converter, e.g. currency and length converter, to be useful. Some features like the blogging function are interesting but i dont wish to be paying for every time i want to post an image on my blog from my phone. I think the design could be so much better and they should have pulled it away from the K800. It could have been made much smaller and lighter as it feels like a brick. The shiny surface shows up finger marks and dirt and makes the phone look even uglier. The battery life is also very bad as mine lasts only a few days, losing around 10% of life a day where my Samsung could have lasted weeks until the battery needed re-charging. I would not recommend anyone to buy this phone as i have been very disappointed and i would trade it for my old samsung any day.

This is my first Sony Ericsson phone, and its absolutely brilliant.A digital camera, music player, web browser, even a modem, and much more besides. A jack of all trades and master of all-wouldn't be out of place in a Bond movie! Only one thing though, its too easy to get grubby fingerprints on it, but that's a minor quibble. Isn't there anything this phone can't do?

This phone is absolutely SUPERB!!! It looks great, hits the right balance between flashiness and business appeal, and doesnt feels solidly built. The camera is excellent, the music player is brilliant (the speaker quality and sound is spot on too) etc etc and overall the usability of it is just so good. As in, the way in which the phone functions is just so so logical. What assures me of this is that with my old phone (the awful LG U8360) I kept thinking "WHY CANT I DO THAT?!", or "WHY IS IT DOING THIS?" or (pretty much all the time) "WHY IS THE TEXTING SO BL**DY SLOW!!!!???". But with this I find myself never conflicting with what its doing, its so logically designed. The best phone Ive ever had, without question. Get it.

Really really good phone; MUCH better than that god-awful Samsung U600 I traded in for this. I'm very hard to please with this sort of thing but I've found a phone which does everything well here. The features are excellent- great camera and media functions, the buttons are great to use (even with big clumsy hands like mine) and it feels robust and well made. The menus are intuitive and sensibly laid out; anyone could use this phone but the options provide a huge amount of personalisation etc. Only slight downside so far is it sometimes lags and takes a second to catch up when waking it up from stand-by but it's not a problem and doesn't spoil this great phone.

Hi there, recently got the k810i and have to say i am a little disappointed with it. After hearing all the hype about how good the camera is, i thought id buy this phone to replace my kodak 3.2MP camera and also my mp3 player. The camera quality is ok, but the picture is of average quality no way can it match my 3 year old kodak camera. Also the video recording is terrible, when u start recording in video mode the picture is pixilated and smudged. My old N73 was much clearer and shaper. The mp3 player is good and i found it had decent sound, however the keys are a bit fiddly and the camera lens cover still slides open in my pocket like the k800i. Overall i would say the k810i is an ok phone but certainly nothing special.

As a die hard fan of Samsung slide phones, was a little reticent about defecting to the Sony Ericsson camp…..but am now a complete convert. The only thing that put me off the Samsung D840 was the hideously cheap looking chrome-esque metal that showed up every single fingerprint on it’s cover. And the U600 was just a complete nightmare (that temperamental touch screen would have driven me to phone-icide. Got the K810i yesterday and am really impressed. Really easy to use, great smooth and responsive interaction between keypad and screen, EXCELLENT camera which has as good resolution and picture quality as my 5 megapixel regular digital camera (which decided to go awol last month) and a very simple editing/uploading/fiddling process. Uploading fave tunes is a piece of cake and the FM radio also a bit of a clincher as it was the only thing missing from my most prized possession – my iPod. Am currenly carrying new said phone, around in one of those little drawstring bags you get sunglasses in, and it’s sitting snugly in the wee mobile phone pocket built into my handbag – I’m obviously still going through that ‘new phone’ phase where you panic every time you breathe on the bleeding thing or leave any kind of a smudge, smear or trace that you ever touched it……naturally this will eventually subside and I’ll no doubt soon be dropping it on every tiled toilet floor in town/dropping it down the loo/throwing it at wall when I’m being constantly harassed by unwanted phone calls, but until such nonchalance descends upon me and said phone, I will indeed be treating it like some sacred relic and affording it more respect and care than would my own offspring. And who could blame me eh? I mean this phone is perfect. It looks HOT, it works like a treat, easy to use, just the right weight, just the right size, wicked interface…..what more could a girl ask for…….? (except maybe a nice pair of matching sunglasses……)

I did have the K800i last year until I lost it in a night of drunken haze. So I thought might aswell upgrade to this. Top phone, although the W810i and K800i were better for texting, I really like this, the camera cover no longer goes a-wandering in your pocket! And I suppose the phone's sleek looks make up for the slight cramp in my thumb while texting. I'm getting used to that. I recommend this to anyone SE do it again!

Had a Nokia 6234 (outstanding piece of kit) and upgraded to a Nokia 6300 (again, an outstanding piece of kit) but I fancied a change... So, I changed to a SE K810i. FEATURES... Outstanding, and far more fun factor appeal than a Nokia. Overall, i'm pleased, but there are a few niggles. The joystick is fiddly and the phone shows every smudge and mark. It doesn't feel as robust as a Nokia either. Next year, I think i'll revert to Nokia, but, its personal choice. I don't dislike the phone, but I can't help feeling that the Nokia 6234 & Nokia 6300 are hard acts to follow.

The camera feels like you're using a standard compact and offers a good number of functions. The radio and MP3 (WMA) player is also excellent. A 4GB card is out in early July making this phone one of the most versatile phones out there for combining alot of other devices into one (camera, MP3 player, radio, mobile of course). You can also sync your Outlook entries with it (pity it 'doesn't' do the emails as well... bear this in mind). From what I can see, the K850 is out in the fourth quarter of this year and is pretty much identical in function except it has a 5 megapixel camera. As such investing in this phone will not leave you behind the rest. I still think it is much better than the Nokia N95 for make quality and the camera quality is too close to call (remember it is about Optics not MegaPixels so don't get too hung up on resolution). The audio output seems to get better reviews also. I bought the crystal clear hard case the acts as a slipper for this device and this fits snug and is a worthwhile purchase to protect an investment that will no doubt, get plenty of use. The resolution of the screen is the same as most current PDAs at 320x240 and as such, the standard games like Tennis, look great. I will certainly be downloading one or 2 more to keep me going mad on long plane/train journeys. Dragging and dropping music and photos is a breeze also. All in all, I think it is the best phone on the market at the moment.

The K810i looks good, works good - but is sadly useless as a mobile phone. 4 - four - days after bying this phone the screen freaked out. According to the service it had been "squeezed" - which was the only alternative since it had no visible damage. The "squeeze" was to place it in a pocket -so dont touch this phone, unless you would like to find out what coustomer service means to Sony Ericcson, and trust me - you dont.

ive had the phone a week now so i feel i can make a good and fair judgment on the phone. to put it simply its brilliant the camera is the best ive ever used and ive had plenty of cam phones. the best touches are the 1,4,7 and star key light up in cam mode to allow you to find the correct keys in the dark! the only tiny draw back is the fact of the joy stick which might b a bit awkward if u have larger fingers oh and maybe a document veiwer would of been nice to but thats me bein really really picky!! all in all this for me is the perfict phone its the 3rd in 12 months due to goin a bit mad and gettin the nokia n70 which to me was a disaster of a phone to slow and just rubish so i bought a motorola z3 which was much better, but all are blown away by the design of the keys(which are strangly very easy to use even though they r round)to the camera. if u can only get one phone it must b the k810i!

After much delibiration between the Nokia N95, the LG Prada and the Sony Ericcson K810i. I left the store, with K810i and have no regrets :D The Nokia was brilliant in many ways, but serious software issues. It froze, it turned it's self of and was sluggish between menu's. The Prada phone, looked really nice, but the touch screen was pointless and texting was ridicuosly hard. But the k810i brightend up my day, it worked beautifully and the camera is superb :D The menus are nice, but the icons are hard to distinguish between though. Finally, if your in any doubt between the three go for the Sony every time :D

Well.. what i can i say apart from this phone really is fantastic! I personally think it is a superb "upgrade" from the fanous K800i phone. If you like or are into the new shiney/glossy fashionable finish to new phones then look no further than the K810i! The first thing I noticed about the K810i was the camera function on the back of the phone. The slide seems to be more intergrated than the K800i phone. This is just a brilliant little makeover that sony ericsson have brought across to us! Many users, including myself, found that the slide for the camera on the K800i would open frequently when left in a pocket, hence the change. Now I have gathered from previous comments that there seems to be a problem with the size of the keys on the keypad. Many people have reckognized for themselves that the keys are too small! i personally think that they are completely fine and are part of the new "look". Now, im a reasonably big tall guy and with that have big hands. I really dont find the key sizes of the k810i a problem and actually find them easier to use than "standard" sized keys. Anyways, i hope you have found this review usefull, tell me what you think if you want. Cheers guy's! =]

The only improvement that is missing is the removal of the joystick, it should have gone and been replaced with navigation like the W810i. The phone is nice and quick between menu's, great menu functions and superb build quality. It does show up finger prints a little more than i'd like (if you wipe it use a lint free dry cloth otherwise you'll collect dust round the buttons). The buttons are great, I was hesitant at first but I've not yet pressed 2 buttons at the same time, they are really easy to text with. Great phone 5 out of 5

Yes the phone keys are a bit fiddly but no more than some in the past (a few siemens models are coming to mind). But nothing unworkable and something which I can easily become accumstomed too. 2nd Sony Ericsson and truely a pleasure to use. Forget the N73 or any Nokia N series. All I hear is software faults from these. Too much put onto them by Nokia an not enough consideration given to hardware. I'd really love to know how much testing went into those models. This SE by far beats any non smart phone out there and even the smart phones in terms of durability and usability.

I must admit this is a quality phone. BUT what does the K810i do that the K800i didn't? Its the same phone with a better looking body! I upgraded to this phone on the day of the release and I seriously believe Sony Ericsson have 'copped out' big time with this phone. Couldn't they be bothered or sonmething? 5 MP camera would have been nice with a higher resolution screen perhaps? The w880i although lacking in features is an iconic phone. Lots of effort obviously went into making it as tiny as it is. Sony pulled out all the stops to reinvent their new flagship Walkman phone so why not with the K810i Cybershot? Peeps new to Sony Ericsson will think its great, However If you have a K800i and are expecting big things from this new 'K' series phone your going to be disappointed! SONY ERICSSON YOU MUST TRY HARDER - You have big competion (ie. Nokia N95, Samsung U600)

Why oh why do you always judge joysticks so bad? All of the Sony Ericssons I tried that had them were very comfortable to use, not to mention the fact that they take up much less space than a truly ergonomic navigation pad, making for bigger/farther apart buttons. Regarding the phone itself, I suppose it's "K" quality. It's going to be my next phone, unless good symbian ones come out soon. The formats supported by the music player are nice - I know a lot of guys who wasted their mp3 libraries with iTunes and don't want to convert back to mp3, further losing audio quality. Then again, while phones are starting to become reasonably good cameras, they're still not a patch on a dedicated music player. My only problems with this phone are its use of Sony's proprietary SD card format(well duh), and its lack of a built-in 3.5mm jack for headphones. Symbian would be nice but the reliability of SE' firmware makes up for that.

The problem is with the key pad - nice clicky buttons but just not enough room with my chunky 'man-hands' and as for the joy stick, far too fiddly and easy to knock. For that reason alone - it's going back.

Had this phone for 1 week now after moving over from Nokia 6280. To say I am impressed is an understatement - this phone does virtually everything so very, very well. Menu's are logically listed and easy to navigate - camera as everyone knows is currently the best available - texting is a doddle, with the predictive text working superbly, also easy to set up text and send (none of this 5 presses before your phone will send a text malarky as found on some other brands). Keypad is very easy to use, although the soft keys are a little on the firm side and could do with 'softening up' a touch. The only down sides are the speakerphone is very poor - trying to use it hands free when driving on speakerphone is hard going, and the aforementioned soft keys. Battery life is excellent. Upgraded mine to 1gb memory card for 15 pounds which gives ample space for MP3's to be used on the phones excellent media player. Yes, you've guessed my conclusion, I'm now a convert to the new breed of S E phones (my last one was 5 years ago !) and any buyer will not be disappointed. Outstanding.

The one problem is this: while playing music in the music player, I cannot scroll down and check the list of songs I have like I could in the W800 and W810i. If I want to skip, I have to go back and click in Tracks to see and play the next one. I'm a DJ and I used to DJ with the W810i, this K810i will be a bit more difficult to use (the headphones that come with the phone does split in the middle for connection to the amp either).
