Sony Ericsson K608i Review

Phone rating:

Note: the K608i is now obsolete. For an updated 3G camera phone we recommend the Sony Ericsson C702 from Dial-a-Phone. Click here to view their best Sony Ericsson C702 deals.

The Sony Ericsson K608i is nearly identical to the Sony Ericsson K600i, except that it's available on the 3 network. It's a 3G phone that supports all 3's video mobile services: video calling, video messaging & downloading video clips. It's a decent but not outstanding 3G phone, and is the first Sony Ericsson phone available on the 3 network.

Looking at the phone, you wouldn't guess that it was 3G. It's a classically styled handset with a silver aluminium casing, and weighs just 100g. The keypad and joystick are not the easiest to use however, in fact they're quite fiddly especially if you have large hands.

The 1.3 megapixel camera is good, with a photo light and a 4x digital zoom. The video recorder is also of high quality, and the VideoDJ™ application lets you combine video clips and add music and sound effects to make your own videos. The display is a large 262k colour screen and once again is of excellent quality. The phone comes with a media player (MP3 and videos), a sound recorder and an FM radio. You can compose your own polyphonic ringtones or download tones via 3G.

Connectivity is excellent, with a choice of Bluetooth, USB and infrared for data transfer. The K608i supports email messaging, and also offers multitasking, an excellent phonebook, a built-in speakerphone and voice commands. The memory is reasonable at 33 Mbytes (enough for most users, but inadequate if your hoping for a phone to replace your MP3 player!). As 3G phones go, the battery life of the K608i is excellent.

Apart from the fiddly keypad and the lack of a memory card, the other problems with the K608i are poor audio quality and quiet ringtones. It's an OK phone, but not the best 3G phone around.

Features of the Sony Ericsson K600i include:

  • 1.3 megapixel camera with picture editor, photo light and 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera & sound recorder
  • Display: 176 x 220 pixels, 262,144 colours
  • 3G video calling
  • MP3 player
  • FM radio
  • Speakerphone
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • MusicDJ™ (MIDI ringtone composer)
  • Voice commands
  • Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, email
  • Java games (downloadable & embedded - Vijay Singh Pro Golf 2005)
  • Wallpaper & screensavers
  • Picture phonebook
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, Infrared, SyncML
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS, HSCSD
  • Memory: 33 Mbytes
  • Vibration alert
  • Triband + 3G (UMTS)
  • Size: 104 x 45 x 19 mm
  • Weight: 100g
  • Talktime: 8 hours (2G), 2 hours (3G)
  • Video calling: 1.67 hours
  • Battery standby: 370 hours (2G), 290 hours (3G)

Ive had this phone about 3 months ( smashed it when portugal knocked england out of the world cup, i threw it at the pool table) all in all it was a good phone the camera was alright and the mp3's were good quality although not very loud. The memory is small and its annoying as there is no memory card slot so i could only fit about 17 songs on :( If you are on 3 dont expect good coverage everywhere as it is very very poor but the mobile internet is very good and you can get lots of free downloads :) its worth the money as you can get it cheap on 3 :P

But u can`t use it like mp3 player because of Memmory(33mb) but u can convert mp3 songs to rm. and enjoy the 45-50 songs when u travel. Anyhow SE608i is Realy Damm Good Fone.

Nice to look at, but an unbelievably poor battery life, especially if you use the phone a lot, has to be charged EVERY night does not normally last longer then 12-14 hours if you talk a lot, the navigation key is fiddly, it is terrible for text messaging unless you use the T9 dictionary. Games are ok, video and picture quality is good, but overall a miserable 2/10.

i think the phone has got all that you need its just reallyyyy bulky and big! the quality of the camera is fantastic and i love it that you can transfer the images to the computer. also it has two cameras, wahay! it was a good quality phone overall. however, just a personal problem, my phone seemed to turn off for no reason, probably a battery problem that doesnt go for all phones. also the joystick was fairly hard to operate and when using sms the buttons were quite difficult to press, so texting wasnt quick. also the size of the phone was a downfall. basically, i think the phone was alright.

Well, I bought this phone for my birthday, and it seemed exellent, but within a month I found problems with the network, the battery being warm, money just vanishing from my account where i so called made a 3 minute video call, which I didn't. I am also unable to download games or music. Its a shame because the phone is generally good, the only problem is the network. I am now having it repaired for the 2nd time, since the 1st time nothing was done to it. This may just be one dodgy phone, but it has knocked my confidence of 3 mobile.

I'm trying to discover everything on the phone as of now but my first impression of the phone is, it's impressive. I have my P910i aside from this one and it's an amazing phone too. Honestly? I will be a fan of sonyericsson for life. They really do a great job and the phones they sell are worth the money you worked for. They say that's it's like a brick, it's maybe because you guys have small hands. Which means you have small, you know that. Well, so much for that. And oh, by the way, if your texting is slow, try to have the phone's OS upgraded and you'll see the difference. You'll love the phone just like i do.

Had this for three months now. Lack of memory card is a big problem for a 3G phone. Problem is, it is looking very outdated now because of this. SE interface has much improved from earler models and is nice to use. However, like some other reviewer pointed out, this phone has a most disturbing habit of randomly switching itself off. Not good. If you have the choice of a free phone on your contract I would recommend getting something more up to date as that lack of a memory card will make this phone look like a dinosaur in the next year or so. It looks pretty though....

I have had this phone for 2 days now and i think it is absoloutly fantastic! My old phone (Motorola V600) had nothing compared to this. The camera and video quality aew excellent sound recording lasts longer than a minute (Woohoo I can actually record whole songs!!!) and 33 MB seems (to me) perfect. (Considering 4/5 MB on the V600) Also in the package that i bought (Phons4U-£70 including £30 airtime) was a dic that lets you connect your phone with you PC (I do not know wheather this is included in every package but I assume it is) with means you can put songs pictures onto your phone or vice versa. Also a handy little website is www.myk608.lasyk.net, it allows you to download ringtones, wallpapers, themes etc. It does not come with built in games but they are available from the 3service directly from the phone for a reasonable fee. The only 2 problems I can find with this phone (Only minor and do not knock off a star) is the joystick is a bit fidley and i often end up lookin g at my messages rather than opening the menu. Also as this phone is available only on 3 you can not keep your own simcard (This for me is not that important but I lnow it will cause some inconvinence for some people hoping to use this as a business phone. If this happened on most networks you could easily get it unlocked but on 3 the phone needs to be sent away (for 5 days according to Phones4U.) Also on 3 the network doesn't seem to be as good as O2 (my old network) That may have something to my house being surrounded by trees but i still didn't have that problem before. I am going to give this phone 5 stars but only because you can't give half satrs otherwise it would have 4 1/2 because of the network. If you can unlock this phone and put in a different simcard (without sending it away for 5 days) it would have got 5/5. I hope reading my review helps, thank you

I have had this phone for 2 months and already I have had to send it back 3 times to be fixed. Battery life is about 10 hours on standby which is useless, software is unstable and phone crashes, text messages can take up to a day to be delivered or don't arrive at all (on 3). Also phone calls randomly disconnect, network service disappears, calls won't go through. Camera mis fine as long as your about 15 feet from the sun, otherwise pictures come out so dark they aren't worth taking. It took me 6 phone calls and 4 weeks to the idiots in the '3' call centre for '3' to port my old number across. The they got my billing wrong as well. Useless phone, poor reliability and the most laughably terrible customer service and network service I've ever experienced. I can see why VodaFone can get away with charging slightly more. You get what you pay for. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.

Tis fone is GREAT. I've been using it for 5 months and haven't change my mind bout this fone. The memory limitation (+/- 30 MB) doesn't really matter to me coz I USE MY REAL MP3 PLAYER to listen to music, not a mobile fone. The camera is great for a mobile fone. I mean, 1.3MP! look at how crap the nokia 6320's camera! Anyway I use REAL DIGITAL CAMERA to take a high quality pic, and only use this fone to take an "instant moment" and it's still GREAT tho! The 30 MB memory means u can put LOTS of pic, mp3 ringtone, and games. Dun use it as mp3 player lol dis fone isn't meant to be used for that! moreover if Sony did put memory slot in this fone then FEW PPL WILL BUY W800 or K750 coz this fone has videocall and they don't. dont forget if u wanna put mp3 as ringtone dun put the WHOLE music to the fone, just cut them first using mp3 cutter software and only put the small part of the music (eg. the chorus, etc). oh yeah i forgot to say that the menu interface is really user friendly and cool (yes im serious) it's better than NOKIA's interface, and much much better than Moto or Samsung. thanks. not a bad phone, just starting to have problems with charging (which i was warned about previously)where i have trouble getting it the phone to connect to the charger. camera is not bad although the only way to take a good picture is to put all of the settings on best- downside is that you use alot of memory for one picture!(anything up to 400kb)so i went to www.myk608.lasyk.net and looked in 'software' and found a 'noise reduction' free program which improves the quality ofthe photo's and takes away the grain- its brilliant! im starting to have problems with the jostick - when i press it down it is a bit tempremental. the memory is limited although i found that you can delete some of the files that come on the phone originaly to give you a bit more space. the screen puts out a good picture with good video playback. i fell for the phone call with the guy selling them. i looked on the net first to see if it was any good but as usual it was 'overhyped' and not as good as they made out. im not regreting having it yet although i can feel i will in a month or two.

I'm very irritated with the fact that the joystick answers my phone and I can't find a way to disable this undocumented feature!! This “auto answering” happens even in so-called "normal" mode. The only other answering choices available are "automatic" and "any-button" answer. As the joystick protrudes, it is obvious why the phone always auto-answers (regardless of your setting) whenever it is kept in a pouch, pocket, etc. So much for “3 modes” when they all come down to the same thing. PATHETIC!

Also sounds are not very audible, with the speaker phone often being used when calling (then again i might be deaf, who knows...) Apart from that its a snazzy looking phone, small and well designed. i've had little trouble with the joystick, and writing a text message is quite difficult compared to other phones i've used (time will tell if i can improve on this aspect.) I have had many mobiles right from the days when they really were bricks (well more like suit cases actually) so you don't know what your talking about when you are referring to phones being like bricks, quite simply what any of the brands have achieved within todays size constraints set by consumer demand is outstanding. Anyway the K608i has a pretty good feature set and although I see complaints of memory size it 33MB is more than most others offer. Buttons are a little cramped if you have big fingers but they are easy to get used to after a while as they are slightly raised and have a reassuring click to them. Linux users will love this one too as it is the first one I have connected to my Linux laptop and it recognised the modem immediately - well done Sony Erisson. Maybe they will be the first to write a nice Linux client for their phone range too instead of the normal PC Suite. All in all this phone is good value, has a good build feel to it and has excellent features.

A very good phone, I personally love it, and got it for quite cheap aswell. Everything is a plus I'd say on this phone, but the only downsides are: Only 32mb of memory - It's ok, but could do with being expandable, which it isnt) Keypad is fine, but the joystick needs a bit more pressure than usual phones to work. The charger I had was a little dodgy. Wont go into details, but it wouldnt charge properly. So I used my T610 charger and it works fine. Other wise, a very good phone.

The feutures such as photo dj, music dj etc could be better. storage is a major problem because i can not use a memory card. HOWEVER FOR SONGS IF YOU CONVERT THEM INTO MP4'S USING THE IPOD ITUNES PROGAM THEY ARE NEARLY HALF THE SIZE SAME CONVERSION PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO VIDEOS not many phones are mp4 freindly!! the interface is cool once your get used to it which could take a while if you have previously owned a nokia.all in all i think the only let down is the memory and the night shot pictures owtherwise i like it.

They are giving me money back after a few phone calls so not all bad but i've got this phone for 18 months hope it lasts. As for the 3 network the help centre is next to useless (all foreigners- no dis-respect but they just dont understand!) Tried to download games from planet 3 it kept saying "not compatable with this handset" then they charged me for them 25 quid!! they kept telling me someone else must have used my phone to download them and offered me £10 as a goodwill gesture so i told them to stick it!! I have had this cute Sony Ericsson K608i mobile phone for 2 months now, and I am very satisfied with it. Pros: Smallest & lightest 3 handset (no more bricks!), Very Stylish, Bluetooth + Infrared + PC software and cable-all very handy and function easily, MP3 player with 32MB internal memory (Enough for me as I have a mini-disc player), FM Radio-very nicely designed, Reasonable battery life (roughly 40 hours between charges), Excellent camera quality, giving you some feeling of using a digital camera. Cons-(with no major significance): The navigation key has started to miss when I press on it in "Down" direction, One fixed reminder signal for the calendar but the alarm signal is changable and you can even use the radio as the alarm signal, no unit convertor and because of "3" network you can not access the Sony Ericsson WAP site to download it which is for free, Calculator not as friendly as the LG software calculator, Limited entry space in the secret note pages-called "Code Memo", No memory card slot-but I don't mind this.

Overall, the Sony Ericsson K608i is a very good 3G Phone. Finally a phone with 3G capabilities that doesn't look and weigh like a brick - well done, SE. The reason why I haven't given this excellent piece of technology 5 stars is because of niggles caused by the network (Three UK). The most annoying thing is that 3 seems to brainwash you into visiting their portal. There are all together 5!!! different shortcuts to the 3 Web Portal which are fixed - they cannot be changed into other more useful shortcuts. Secondly, as with all 3 Phones, you cannot visit any other site, only 3-approved sites, which of course you have to pay for extra. And that is where the other major fault comes from: On the Sony-Ericsson Web-site you can create your own ringtones, images, themes and then upload them for free from the Sony-Ericsson WAP site from your phone - if only you could access the SE-WAP site... Clever thinking, guys! One more thing, the software on this phone doesn't seem to allow automatic network selection. Usually when you are in a non-Three area it switches automatically to 2.5G (on the O2 network, as far as I know). Not on this phone, you have to switch manually. If someone knows a way around this please let me know...

I've had this phone a while now and can hopefully give a clear honest review, unlike some of the idiots that write reviews stating nokia's great this phones rubbish, blah blah! My first Sony Eriksson was the T610 and the natural progression on from that was my k700i. If you liked either of these phones your going to love the k600i (k608i on the 3 network). Bad points first: 1.Memory is far too small to use as an MP3 player, although it does play MP3 tunes/Ringtones and as these are normally small files anyway you can fit hundreds of MP3 Rintones on the phone, 2. The joystick is abit fiddly and can refuse to move, especially during games, 3. The screen does seem a little small, 4. Can only use digital zoom at lower resolutions. Now the good bits, The camera is great with loads of functions, what i like is the shutter on the back, one little flick of this and your camera is ready to shoot, and providing the light is good (well it is a digital camera) you can take some amazing pictures that are as good as most expensive stand alone cameras, and although that 33mb memory looks small it will hold 100+ photos. The usb lead that comes with the camera means you can download games, wallpapers and ringtones at a very high speed and there are some great games available for sony phones, even better any game made for the k700i seems to work on this phone (meaning hundreds available). The Reason i brought this phone was for the camera and sleek looks (well compared to most 3g phones) but the style or sleekness of this phone make it easy to drop, i've never dropped a phone while out and about before but this phone's bounced off concrete half a dozen times already, the good news is it's still working perfectly. Thanks Sony!

When I first recieved this phone I was impressed with it's style; a basic shape but also incorporates some elegance. The solid frame and buttons really do show a high degree of quality but whether it will last we will have to see! I've found the biggest advantages to be the long battery life, the radio, the crisp clear display and the attention to detail. I dont think you will understand how well equipped this phone is. I could write masses on it, but at the same time bore the living hell out of most but the geeks. I may as well cut to the chase, and give the bad points about this phone. Nothing in this world is perfect, and this is undenyably true with this model. Firstly, there are no settings to change the video recording length. It is simply set to 14 seconds. Being a recording fan, I find this hugely irritating. Why cant a phone that incorporates so many gizzmos be able to simply make this setting adaptable. Secondly, for the vain type, there is no self portrait. A fair amount of fiddling is required in the video calling display to achieve something along these lines. And lastly, I find that there are to many ways to get onto 3's web. I mean, is there really a need to have 2 windows on the main menu plus a large button on the outside.Christ, keep the big fat button but no more. Please. Anyhow, I found that the advantages really do outweight the disadvantages for the average user. But if you like your video recording, dont buy this phone!

I've had my eyes on this phone for a while but only ordered it yesterday.Thankfully 3 have got a decent sized phone at last and since Orange and Voda are using it,it should help push sales of this great little phone since 3 are no longer the sole supplier of the once dreaded bricks.( it's the first time you've probably heard a 3 phone called little.Menu is good though I think as with most phones the user manual is written by someone who hasn't actually seen/used the phone.I found all functions on k608i without the manual in about 20 minutes.I've been a Nokia fan for the last 10 years and tried most brands of phone but this I like.I've just got mine with 8 months free line rental on 12 month contract t&t 600 which for £10/month for 500 mins + 100 texts is filthy cheap!! even if you didn't like the phone where could you get a better deal on any network? Earlier this year bought a Sharp 902 as wanted 3G, video, etc, again great phone, but the size of a brick was its let down. Now have the 608i and have say that this an excellent phone, the UI is greatly improved over the previous Sony's even though it is still not as good as the Nokia's, but find me a 3G Nokia that is even near the same size and weight as the K608i. If you are after a small 3G then this is a great phone, great size, features with a improve user interface over previous Sony's.

I've had this phone 24 hours now and I have to say it is by far the best I’ve had in the 9 years I’ve owned mobile phones. Granted you can't compare today’s phones with that of 5 years ago but the k608i is Phenomenal. Thanks largely to other 3g service providers like Vodaphone approaching their live status, Sony-Ericsson have been able to fund the development of smaller 3g handsets on the basis it's not just a sole network using them. The features built into this phone are groundbreaking, at least on the Hutchinson 3G network. Compared to my old LG2130-U it's a breeze to use connects to my PC within seconds, transferring MP3's and Wallpapers. The speaker is nice and clear, as is the earpiece and hands free set. But for me the biggest plus by far is the handsets ease of use. I once had a phone; for voice activation you had to go through 4 menus before you could talk into the speaker- it was quicker to hand dial! As well as serving for protection turning dial on the real of the phone, when opened to reveal the lens, automatically brings the viewfinder on screen for instant shooting. The options you have for the camera, lighting, effects, size, quality, autotimer, it's as good as my Digicamera! And of course there’s the basic video camera also The only minor issue I have is I’ve yet to find a way to assign a ringtone to a persons number. There is also no slot to allow for expanding memory. Other than that the phone is a dream to use and own- you won't be disappointed!

This is an attractive looking beastie with all the functionality (alleged) that one could wish for. In fact it is one of the most poorly designed pieces of consumer kit ever provided by anyone. Try pairing it with a Jabra headset, it refutes the access code. Try activating voice dialling - if you can hear the speak now tone. Try taking an instant photo, by the time you've answered all the questions the subject has grown old and died. Try speaking to your supplier when you have a problem, "you need to speak to the dealer" Speak to the dealer "you need to speak to the provider". This was an example of the help received from both 3 the network? and clubmobile who are simply a bunch of box shifting numpties. Eventually I bought a new Nokia 6230 and unlocked it. The SE K608i has many great improvements over its previous 3G sibling "Z1010", which happened to be my last 3G phone. The K608i is the third 3G phone I have over the past 2 years, and I can see that 3G phones are getting heaps better, smaller and more stylish. Back to the SE K608i, is surprisingly like a "customed made" phone for me. The software on this phone is pretty much similar to the software used on the SE Z1010, but is much more user friendly and "makes more sense". For example, I used to write SMS message on the Z1010 while on the go, then I usually draft it, and finish off the SMS later. When I got back to the message, the default was "Send", which is a bit silly, because my SMS was only half-written. Now on the SE K608i, the default is "Edit", which makes more sense to me. The "light" feature on the new phone is very useful, the light is quite bright. Also other older software features that "didn't make sense" were all gone. In conclusion, this phone should attract more people to get into the 3G "world". If you decide to carry it around with your hand, I suggest to attach the wrist strap to the phone as the phone cover can be slippery while holding. Also don't forget to close the lens cover after photo shooting!

Having always been a Nokia man on T-mobile for nearly 4 years I decided to chance a change of network and brand of handset. So i get the 608i on 3. Very smart looking phone but disappointed at the lack of accessories; no in car charger & no leather case. (ordered from dial-a-phone). It might be my 'Nokia mind set' but the menus are not very instinctive and had trouble finding contact management functions. Menus very geared up for wap content on 3.The short cuts facility on the 'joystick' is a nice touch, but sadly got frustrated at trying personalise them. The screen quality is excellent, nice and bright. Cannot comment on video calling, but the 'face' cam streaming to the display is quite responsive. The quality of photo is very good indeed, with a quite a bright light(no flash though), but even in 'nite mode' pictures are dull and v blurred. Sepia, B+W and polarised effects are ace!. The camera control is biased towards having the handset horizontal, making 'covert photog raphy' a little more difficult! and the rotating lens cover is fiddly with 1 hand use. Using the sofware was not that easy, and struggled to locate the folders to transfer mp3 tones and personal photos for wallpaper etc. I agree with THEBIGYIN (see below) on memory expansion, texting and camera operation and in conclusion disappointed with this 'ok' handset, so it has been returned. This leopards' spots aren't changing, ordered a 6680!!
