Siemens SX1
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Siemens SX1 is a Series 60 smartphone with a unique design. In order
to minimise the size of the device, Siemens have moved the numeric
keypad to the edges of the phone, with the screen filling the centre
of the device. Whilst this has the benefit of making the SX1 compact,
it seriously undermines the usability of the device as a phone,
making dialling and texting into a chore. Single-handed use is impossible
for most people.
Putting
that aside, the SX1 offers pretty much everything you'd expect from
a Series 60 smartphone, and benefits from the wide range of software
available for this platform.
There
are a few extra features in the SX1 that are worthy of comment.
First, although output via the speakerphone is mono, plug in the
headset supplied and you can listen to stereo MP3 and the integrated
FM radio. With the option of plugging in additional memory cards,
this makes the SX1 into a decent music player - many of its rivals
miss out in this respect. MMC cards can be hot-swapped, which is
another benefit. Built-in memory is limited however, at just 4 Mbytes
of user memory. That isn't a lot of space for storing applications.
Another
positive feature is the low weight of the device. At just 116g,
the SX1 is one of the lightest smartphones available, and its size
and weight make it much more of a mainstream device than many series
60 phones. As already remarked however, the compact size comes at
the expense of poor keypad design.
Connectivity
is excellent with a choice of wireless Bluetooth connection,
USB, infra-red and a built-in fax modem. One thing missing is high-speed
data transfer.
The
battery life of the SX1 is rather poor and most users will need
to recharge every day or so. In this respect it doesn't compare
well with its rival smartphones.
Still,
taking all things into account, the Siemens SX1 is a good phone
with excellent music capabilities, and it would have been an outstanding
phone all round if it were not for the silly keypad layout and relatively
poor battery life.
Features
of the Siemens SX1 include:
- Display: 65k colour TFT screen, 176 x 220 pixels
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) plus camcorder
(176 x 144 pixels, 15 frames/second)
- Video playback and video streaming
- Digital voice recorder
- MP3 player
- FM radio
- Stereo headset supplied
- Messaging: SMS (with T9 support), MMS, email
- Voice dialling
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Java games
- Polyphonic ringtones
- Screensaver & wallpaper
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, IrDa, fax
modem
- Synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook
- Memory: MultiMediaCard (MMC) slot
- Programmable softkeys
- Vibration alert
- Clock, calendar, alarm, reminder, calculator,
currency converter
- Address book
- WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
- Triband
- Size: 109 x 56 x 19 mm
- Weight: 116g
- Talktime: up to 4 hours
- Battery standby: up to 200 hours

i bought the sx1 coz of one thing, it's unique key pad. i just thought
of experimenting over the new mobile phones so i bought. after a
couple of months, it just shuts off and unfortunately, didn't want
to turn on again. so, i brought it to the siemens center near my
place. horror just came to my face, they told me that they can't
fix my phone!!! goodness... and they told me to bring it to their
main office which is miles and miles away from my place. but, i
loved the phone so much so i chose to travel a couple of miles just
to get my phone fixed. it took them a couple of weeks before i could
get it again. hardly after 24 hours, system error comes on my way.
there's nothing i can do but to bring back the phone. they found
out that the phone jst got a virus. and they told me that it was
my fault and they didn't want to fix it under a warranty service.
goodness. they brought a virus to my phone and they tell me that
it is my fault??? and they say, it would take quite expensive expenses
for them to fix it. what did i do? i didn't have them fixed. i just
told them that siemens are not worth buying. i just told them that
right to their face.

I bought my SX1 second hand with no trouble at all. The price was
almost half of its competitor, the Nokia 3230 (alos second hand),
and the SX1 has more features! After using and abusing it, I got
a few anoying but not serious system errors and the phone hung a
few times after which it rebooted automatically to recover successfully.
The left and right softkeys tend to be non responsive on the first
press at times. This phone has the great advantage of accomodating
Symbian 6 as well as S60 software, together with unique Siemens
functions. Unlike Nokia, Siemens offers the firmware upgrade and
applications and games for free and downloadable from their website.
With firmware version 15, the camera has an excelent night mode.
The SX1 is definitely worth buying

best phone out of the 20 phones I have here, I put a 1 Gig MMC card
in the phone, I beat any mp3 player on the market, I have about
5 movies on the phone using Smart Movie Converter. The only thing
Siemens could of done better on this phone is the Camera quality,
other than that, this phone is amazing, there are just so many applications/games
for this phone to keep you buisy for a year. For people who dont
like it yes you are entitled to you own opinion, but please take
this phone and play with it for an hour you will see what I mean.

it breaks 3 times bfore they'll change it for another phone, so
im HOPING it will break again. The Symbian operating system is just
un-stable. The first time it broke the phone wouldn't start up,
the second time it wouldn't let me access my txt messages as a message
saying "System error" kept appearing. Any potential buyers should
think twice before buying this fone. The Specs are really good for

a wise choice! siemens has solved a big problem in its phones. now
SX1 is a real smartphone with a full bag of features. since it has
a new unique design with good materials as its cover and buttons
and feels Strong in hand, it couldn't be recognized as a cellphone,
specially the black version (which i'm using). upgrading the firmware
of this phone adds a good ability to improve this device as well
as getting better results in external equipments such as louder
ringtones. in the other hand, combining the most user-friendly features
such as radio, mp3 player with stereo output, a good variety of
symbian applications, reasonable camera and camcorder, vivid LCD,
easy to use data suit with the ability to exchange data with microsoft
outlook, ability to hot swap memory card and so on brings this phone
to the top of the list. at the end, i didn't find any disadvantage
in this phone. some people wrote about its short battery lifetime,
but remember that it is a smartphone with a big display. compare
its LCD size with nokia phones (3650/6600) and also its weight.
nokia smartphones are heavier than SX1 (specially the unbelievable
3650 that is like a rock in our hands!!) and that is because of
the weight of the battery. good to mention that my SX1 lasts for
atleast 2 days with bluetooth on (because of the wireless headset
- a very well designed bluetooth HS provided by siemens) and something
about 30min of talk per day and sometimes listening to radio (not
with loudspeaker) and that's good for such device. the only drawback
of this phone that prevents me to give it 5 stars is its charging
time (more than 2h). but it's not very important cuz its charger
disconnects automatically when the battery is fully charged, so
you can connect your device at night and start a new day with a
full battery!

Brilliant phone. The pros of the phone are: the brilliant mp3 player,
use my phone as my mp3 player whereever wherever I want and got
a 256 mb card for €20! Symbian is another thing. Theres so
much apps out there you can get for free and most ( if not all )
apps and games for the 6600 work for it so theres loads for it even
though its very new. The camera is great quality for VGA and you
can soom up to the picture 400% once taken. The video is 2 minutes
with sound and UNLIMITED without sound ( until space runs out )
but with symbian you can get apps that allow unlimited recording
with sound. It syncs fine with outlook ( calendar, contacts, notes,
tasks etc.)I'm very used to Nokia phones but thats no problem because
its Nokias symbian and easy to use. Converters great and I use it
as a tv remote and a radio. You get a USB cable with it The cons
are: The joystick is a little bit slippy but supprisingly you geet
used to it after a while. The same applies to the keyboard. No problem
getting used to it just takes about 1 or 2 weeks if that bothers
you. It isnt a 3g phone and as a VGA camera. If your looking for
an even better phone than this I recomend the Motorolla E1000 with
its UMTS,1.2 mpixel cam GPS and video calling and I think its got
symbian 7 but im not so sure. There are so many things the SX1 an
do like GPS navigation with a bluetooth GPS receiver and hundres
of apps and games, that I cant list all its features. If your thinking
of buying it I recomend it because its one of the best phones around
even compared to the 3g phones wich cost alot more.

I got this as it was the only decent looking phone O2 would give
me on a free upgrade. It does have a lot of features i will give
it that much but after a week I just had to send it back as personally
I just could not get along with it. Firstly the key pad drives me
insane. It took me a good 5 minutes to write a decent sized message
as I spend all the time looking for the damn buttons... THEN when
I am able to write it I either have to do it 2 handed or I cover
the screen. The alarm... if you have the phone set to silent dont
expect to hear the alarm sound! It has no real shortcut to write
a new message which I can deal with however when in menu, whatever
sub menu you are in, unless you exit back fully it remembers where
you are. i.e. you go to the sent messages section and exit right
back to the main screen with the red button... if you go back to
messages you are still at the sent messages meaning you need to
exit back again if you want to write a new one. The battery kife
is dire and due to the location of the on off button, the phone
is prone to accidental on`s and off`s... particularly ons when on
a plane! The chap that seemed to think UK reviewers were scared
of german phones doing well... I suspect you think far too highly
of yourself. If we dont like it we dont like it. country of origin
is wholely irrelevant

SX1 is the best-ever phone in the world. Since Siemens is not a
bad brand, SX1 is the best in term of quality. Previously, I used
P800, P900 and Nokia 6600. Of the three phones, I found P900 is
the best in term of screen and sound quality. P900 offers more functionalities
(a PDA like-function). Howerver, P900 seem too big for me. So, I
sold it 6 moths ago. And 6600 is also a good phone and pocketable
but its sound system is bad, I am really very disappointed with
its sound system. However, It's more affordable. It is now USD285
in my country. For the above reason, I sold it to my friend. Recently,
I have bought SX1. Now I am using it and I think it is the best
phone, it's small, light and rich in functionalities, especially
mp3 player and FM radio offer an excellent sound. I have all the
functions from Symbian v6.1 plus a built-in mp3 player and stereo
FM radio. In my opinion, SX1 equips with a complete entertainment

This phone, although rich in features, is a grotesque comedy of
errors and inconsistencies. I am willing to overlook lack of functions
such as switching off the backlight (which accounts for slightly
more than 90% of total power consumption) or the 2 minute maximum
lenght of a voice recording (wonder why I bought that 256MB MMC).
Or the presence of two relatively useless side buttons, which have
been utilised so much better in earlier models. However, there are
severe shortcomings, which make use of this device most annoying
at times. I have never, ever, seen a mobile phone without automatic
key lock. Nor one, that on pressing a particular combination of
keys, while been switched off (is this some new Nokia tradition?),
is going to format its memory, thereby erasing all possible records.
Nor have I ever seen such a mess in sound profiles and signals.
The list goes on, and is rather lengthly. In retrospect, I certainly
hope this is the very last time Siemens uses Nokia software in one
of its phones. It has transformed a nice piece of hardware into
something slightly better than a useless piece of junk. Oh, and
hope they don't turn to Microsoft next time (-smirk-).

I HAVE an SX1 and mine has been nothing but a nightmare. I got my
phone from my cellular provider and was excited with all the features
it had. (I had become a Siemens fanatic ever since I bought the
S57 model - the build quality of Siemens in second to none - so
I thought that this would be the phone of my dreams. It was for
about 3 weeks. First it started hanging. I thought that was acceptable
at times. Then when I went to the US, the unthinkable happened:
System Error: Unable to open Messages This happened to ALL the phone's
functions. Camera, MP3 player, you name it. I returned to Manila
and tried to have it replaces but the company said that they could
only repair it. They upgraded the firmware. It worked for a while.
Then system errors started popping up AGAIN! I sent it to the Siemens
Concept Shop in SM North Edsa - they replaced the Installation Board.
It works again, but still hangs on occasion (when making calls,
when sending/receiving sms, when recording video...). Also, the
phone re-starts when I try to send things to my Palm Zire 71 via
infrared. I still love Siemens phones - I'm planning on getting
the S65, but because of certain software bugs, I'm afraid to do
so. Please read this review and beware of the SX1 - I can't even
sell the damn thing here. Any info on the S65 would be great too.

like the screen its bright and clear.. however i really havent seen
any screen better that that used on the tanger e100....menue is
easy to navigate.. and the bundled software is a nice tough....
i give the phone a 4 simply because it isnt as versitile as the

*note to readers... ignore the negative reviews, these people don't
even own the phone* For those morons who doesn't even have the phone,
SHUT UP! This page are for REVIEWS, not IMPRESSIONS. DESIGN - FYI,
keypad layout is not a problem (atleast not for me), only took me
less than two weeks to adjust to it. There is, however, one design
flaw that was preventing me from giving the sx1 a perfect score
- joystick. Chrome surface is too slippery and hard to navigate.
(especially when playing games :)) FEATURES - I can't believe some
people thought that the 6600 is a better phone. I doubt if these
people actually use the Symbian 7 improvements other than theme
support. With mp3 (STEREO), radio, hot swappable mmc, and BETTER
BLUETOOTH FUNCTIONALITY - can share pc internet connection easily
(NOW TRY THAT WITH YOUR 6600, MORONS!!!), SX1 is surely one of the
best phones of its time.

about Siemens SX1: MAKE SURE REALLY OWN ONE AND ACTUALLY USE THE

layout, this phone is outstanding. I got used to the keypad layout

except for its keypad. Its the epitome of absurdity. How are yuo
supposed to text with your palm covering the screen? The functions
keys (OK, NO, C) are placed at the center, and they consume sucha

Well, sure the phone may have 5 stars but, as already noted by another
reviewer, Siemens needs to hurry up and do something about the release
date; in fact it is sufficient to go look at the new phones that
Motorola, Sony, and Sendo (beside the already famous Nokia 6600)are
coming out with. In particular the Motorolas that have not been
released yet are truly cool and full of features just like the SX1
such as 65000 TFT display, camera, camcorder, memory, MMC card slots,
MMS email, wap quadruple bands ( not on SX1 )etc etc etc. I feel
there is an awful lot of people that is in love with SX1 but there
a whole lot of "new kids on the block" that people is noticing and
Siemens risks of "missing the bus" this time. I personally give
it till the end of December, than I'll chose between N6600 and a
new Motorola.

I just saw the Siemens SX-1 at the GITEX 2003 in Dubai, UAE. I was
amazed by its build quality, out-of-this-world looks & superb functionality.
I was tempted to compare the SX-1 to the also-new Nokia 6600. After
a lot of debating.. I was soon convinced that the SX-1 offers much
more to gadget-freaks than the Nokia 6600. The piece which I used
was a demonstration model, and the operating system was quite stable.
It did crash though after a few minutes of man-handling by me. I
was told that the SX-1 will be available for sale around the first
week of December 2003, for approximately $500. This information
is from a Siemens sales engineer, so you can consider it as pretty
reliable. When asked about the crash of the OS, he said that since
they still have a few bugs to sort out the OS cannot be considered
completely stable. The features which I really liked about the Siemens
SX-1 are - a. Highly responsive (& fast) OS b. 4x digital zoom on
camera c. MMC card support (external bay, unlike the 6600) d. FM
Radio player & MP3 Player e. Alien like looks f. Screen quality
& size Overall.. this phone is a must buy for phone/gadget freaks,
though some might consider it as a large phone, but with the punches
this baby packs.. it sure looks tiny.

This mobile phone is cutting edge. Siemens have combined all the
latest technologies to produce the SX1. The Siemens SX1 includes
an MP3 player, Video Camera, Digital Camera with zoom, Bluetooth,
E-mail capabilities, 65k colour screen, latest Java Technology and
an FM Radio. All this comfortably fits in a 110g handset. With all
these technologies, the Siemens SX1 hasn't lost its unique styling
and ease of use. Siemens have cleverly put the keys down either
side of the phone to make it easier to type text messages and E-mails,
and a five-way joystick for easy navigation around the main screen.
It also has 24MB integrated memory with a slot for additional memory.
All of this with MMS, Polyphonic Ringtones, Built-in Handsfree Speaker,
Infrared, GPRS, XHTML Broswer and a USB port for connection with
a PC makes this a must-have Gadget. The Siemens SX1 leaves its competitors
behind, and have produced an original and incredible piece of technology.
