Sharp GX25 Review

Phone rating:

The Sharp GX25 is a love-it-hate-it kind of phone. It has some great features and some not so great ones. On the plus side, it's very lightweight and compact, with an internal aerial, so great for keeping in a pocket or bag. It's got one of the best screens in its class with 262,000 colours and extremely high resolution (QVGA). You'd need to pay quite a bit more to better the quality of this screen. It also comes with excellent connectivity, including full Bluetooth™ support for wireless headsets and data transfer, in addition to infrared and USB options.

However, despite these great features, the GX25 is sadly let down by an average camera and miserably small memory - just 2.1 Mbytes. It's a mystery why a phone with the best screen in its class is so woefully unable to take better pictures and then store more than a handful. There's nothing else that's particularly wrong with the phone, and in fact the camera isn't worse than average, it's just: why pay extra for an exceptional screen when the phone's capabilities don't allow you to make good use of it?

Features of the Sharp GX25 include:

  • VGA camera with 4x digital zoom and camera light
  • Display: TFT, 262k colours, 240 x 320 pixels
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (POP3)
  • 40 voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Java games
  • Memory: 2.1 Mbytes
  • WAP, GPRS
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 1.1 (voice & data), USB, IrDa
  • Triband
  • Size: 23.5 x 92 x 46 mm
  • Weight: 90g

i have had this phone for almost 2 years now i think its really good lots of phones that my firneds have had have packed up after a couple of months but mine has never ever stopped working. cameras good enough for me, dont like the video recording tho its too short goes on for about 10 seconds. i cant put mp3 files on it which bugs me. worst thing about it is the memory. 2mb is not enough even tho i can put them on the computer, i would rather have them on my phone, if i need to show them to people and stuff. im looking for a new phone now cos ive had this one so long. it was great when it first came out, and it is still great quality but right now there are better phones then this one for the same stuff

Had this phone for a little over a year. Generally I was happy with it, as with other reviewers, the limited camera resolution and memory are major drawbacks. The screen, ease of use and surfing Vodafone live! where quite good. However this phone has completely died on me. I'd expect much better build quality than this. Also note that the exterior finish isn't great. The silver around the camera and the back battery cover scratch easily. Glad to have upgraded.

I have had just a couple of problems with the phone... Mainly the fact that it can only store a handful of photos and that's it. I have my own digital SLR for times when I need to take a photograph, however a "spur of the moment" picture is sadly lost - normally I'd resort to the phone's (very average) camera to take a couple of snaps, but it turns out that it'll say memory full and refuse to play ball. I also find that the "Fine" setting of the camera's output still produces lots of JPEG nasties and some horrible compression artifacts. I also found that the keys took some getting used to, however ergonomics aren't THAT bad. On the plus side I absolutely love the screen. The colours are rich and vibrant yet still realistic. Also there's so much texture visible on photos that it's a shame we can't zoom in. 2 years from when it was released and it still looks decent and still has a higher resolution screen than 90% of its competitors in the price bracket. Also, the UI looks pretty cool but could do with some customisation as seen with the Sony Eric. themes. They also didn't include a stopwatch which is a shame but hey I worked around it by downloading a program from a 3rd party on the WAP network. Ergonommics are pretty decent, but it doesn't have any novel features to make it stand out, which is a shame. The torch (activated by holding down the volume button) is excelllent and is used very very often

I bought this phone last year off Ebay. For the price it was worth it. The camera quality is fantastic and look great when you upload them to the PC. It has a picture editor with different effects to choose from and a melody editor. The downside is the memory, it is pretty small especially when you're taking all those pictures and it starts bleeping becuase the memory's full. But once you've uploaded the pictures to the PC you can delete them off the phone and make space, it isn't really the end of the world. It does look very stylish and sleek, not like the average ugly antenna, grey, bulky flip phone. =P

I've had my phone for about a year now and am happy with it. I've got the red one and it looks fantastic! That said I only use it for calls and texts, and I use the organizer/calender all the time. So I can't comment on some of the problems some people have been having with WAP etc. I would say that I am a light to moderate user so generally charge my phone once every 3 or 4 days. This is my second sharp phone, the previous being a sharp gx30. I think that the interface is really quick and easy to use which is why I have stuck with Sharp after having my gx30. The only thing I would like to have had was MP3 playback capability, but as I said, I got my phone a year ago and MP3 playback capability was rare back then. So if you want a phone that small, light, easy to use and you're not fussed about MP3 players, then this is a good choice.

Quite simply the worst phone i have ever had the misfortune to own. Its a shame that 'poor' is the worst rating i could choose, as personally i think its attrocious. The phones looks outdated, the keypad is impossible to use, the ringtones, message alerts are the worst ive ever heard, the video clips only last about 10 seconds, the camera isnt up to scratch, the bluetooth connection rarely works, the phones reception is the worst ive experienced and quite simply there isnt a single thing i like about it. Its just as well that this was a replacement for a broken Sony Ericsson, as i couldnt put up with it any longer than the 2 months i was forced to until my current contract has expired. DONT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS DISASTER!!

Memory is bad as well but you can take some pics and vids and download them with the data cable, easily and fast. Only problem I got: you just can't upload more than 100kb files + amr filetypes canNOT be set as ringtone!!! Tried up mmf files but still 100kb cannot get you a 2 minute song in. and the quality is poor. Mayb cause I use the "One Click Ringtone Converter"? I dunno... If anyone know a proggy to make small size mmf files (only ones i think except for midis that can be set as ringtone), please mail me at: ZeusT@ebox.gr Nothin' else. Nice 2 c so many people with good reviews on this (and my) phone. thanx.

The only problems I've ever had with it is that the realtones don't work on some networks (I'm on Vodafone) and recently I've had a few issues with the bluetooth, but this is after a year of constant use! If possible I would have given this phone 2.5 rather than 2. I bought this phone on contract after returning from Japan where I had a sharp mobile I was very happy with. I primarily got this phone because of its looks, I was aware that it didnt have the many features of my beloved Japanese 'keitai' but as Id ceased using them a few months after getting that phone I wasnt too bothered about that so the camera, small memory and lack of mp3 was no big deal, but having a nice screen and good looking phone was. Ive had the phone a year now, its worn fairly well and there have been no malfunctions although it now has some visible 'bald' spots on the casing and the silver foil on the menu button is peeling off. Ive never got the bluetooth to work as the handset demands a code to connect to anything, vodafone have been no help in locating this code so I gave up. Battery life is nothing special and youll have to charge it every day if you use it much for talking and play an odd game or two, or every other day if you dont. The vodafone custom menu is miserable to use (much like vodafone) and I really miss Sharps intuitive menu design but theres no way to retrieve it sadly. The thing which has really tired me of this phone though is the very s l o w processor. The phone lags behind your key presses sometimes by several seconds. Type in a number quickly and itll miss several letters even on 'maximum' speed. The only time this doesnt happen curiously is when using predictive txt (non predictive is as slow as everything else), and thank god or I would have thrown it through a window. You can only delete individual items or all items in a folder so if you want to clear out the small inbox then its frustrating and laborious as the phone lags behind your keypresses, taking an age to confirm everything. I would recommend this handset for those who are looking for a simple WAP phone because of its looks, clear bright screen, and functionality. But the slow operation could well drive you to distraction.

This phone keeps losing connection onto the vodafone network particulary indoors such as within shops. The pictures are very poor quaility especially the capture of colours for a VGA camera phone. The memory is abysmal. The menus require more clicks than are necessary to perofrm the same functions as on a Nokia. I was given this phone by work with a company paid SIM card account. The phone is so bad I have taken the SIM out and put it in a 2 year old Nokia 3650 much bigger older but much more reliable and functional. Don't buy this phone, I don't even want it free.

This is a good fone but it has problems like the tiny amount of memory, lack of memory card slots. Also texting can be difficult. also the sound quality is appalling from the speaker on the front, really tinny and would not be heard in a noisy room and definitely not in the street. However, camera is good and the screen resolution is very7 good good colour displays your images very clearly. flash is a waste of time to be honest unless at very close range. It is a good fone but really for the price there should be a megapixel camera and maybe a memory card slot.

Have had phone about a week and after a long line of Nokia phones thought I would have trouble converting but no such problems. At last a camera that is worth calling a camera and so tiny will go in trouser or shirt pocket. Nothing in life is perfect but all in all I think this is the best phone I have owned.

im in love with this phone! i got it in the week and have barely left it alone! it takes great pictures (exept in the dark) bluetooth is very useful and is an easy, compact phone to use. however...why are 2 out of 3 of the games only demos! this has never been the case with any of my previous phones, and the sound the phone makes when taking a picture cannot be switched off, this isn't a major problem but just seems a bit strange as even when the phone is on silent and you don't want people to hear, they do! great value and no regrets. x

Had about 5 phones up till now. This has got to be the best one yet!! Everything about it is spot on. It is so cool looking and small and light. The menus are very accessible. Gr8 sound on it. Takes gr8 pics.If I had to be really picky and find fault with it then it would have to be that the connection for recharging it can be a bit of a pain to get into. Apart from that? Nothing! I would reccomend this phone to eveyone. Superb!!

Where is lacks is 3 places - No MP3 capability, Recorded sound cannot be used as ringtone, Too small internal memory and no memory card slot which means you have to be close to laptop as you go on shooting photos Vikrant Dhoke vdhoke@yahoo.com +91-98230-83478

Small, light and good size screen,,, thats the plus's done with... Had the phone for 1week before the battery stand-by life diminished 2 a couple of days. Camera, not that great especially indoors. The flash/light, complete waste of time, couldn't light the inside if a match box.!!! Sound is of a poor quality to and the speaker viabrates. It plays lots of audio file types but you can not use most of them for ringtones etc. The reception is ok, but not of a Nokia standard. OK phone but it quickly loses the "new phone shine"

I give a five star because it really is SHARP! The colour is lovley and the phone will still be popular in 2012. It's worth buying so money well spent!!!!!!!!!! E. Williams.

Having had the GX20 which had an absolute gem of a camera on it was expecting similiar on this but no still the colours on the '25 stand out big time. Bluetooth is good for drivers or sending stuff ! Can be slippy (it has slipped out of my hand) - looks great and is JUST on the edge of being a complete GIRLY phone ! Can also be a bit of a pain to open with it being soo smooth and for this reason I could probably get away with a GX15 ? But I wouldnt have a light ! As has been said MORE memory would give this MORE + yet cant see why Sharp/Voda' dont include about 5MB instead of about the 2MB you get. The Blue display is really attractive a ploy loaned from Samsung ? Not needed are the Profiles or the amount (5) just 3 or so would do ! Sound is VERY loud. The circular button/s is very interesting with 4 buttons to press and activate various applications once you've clicked on click-ons applications within menu's. The WAPs good and have had it for 4months now since then have also bought a copy spare batt. as Sharps aren't that good for charge time and the lasting of it. Their is a genuine sharp mobile battery XN-1BT31 for the person wanting extended talk time but these cost ! Still its a great handset.

Impressive phone let down by the shamefully small amount of memory, just over 2Mb. One of the lightest phones I've ever held but looks a bit too 'minimalist' for me. Ringtones sound a little too tiny for me however you can browse just about all normal websites with it. The picture and screen quality are very good and it also has a flash - well, I call it a flash, it's a bright white LED which stays on for as long as you need it. Annoyingly the light stays on when it's charging which can be a bit of a pain if you charge it at night in your room. Not a bad phone though. Bluetooth kills the battery.
