Sharp GX15 Review

Phone rating:

The Sharp GX15 is a compact candy-bar design phone with a good range of features.

The integrated VGA camera does not have the resolution of the more expensive Sharp GX30, being only 350,000 pixel resolution, but it is still an excellent camera by comparison with other camera phones. It also has a video recorder capable of recording video clips with sound.

The screen is of excellent quality with 65k colours, and uses TFT technology for a bright vivid display that is clearly visible even in sunlight. The screen is physically large but the resolution is limited at 120 x 160 pixels, so not as sharp as the GX20 or GX30. However, in the entry-level camera phone class, this is one of the best screens available.

The user interface is icon-driven, intuitive and easy to use.

The GX15 comes with 40-voice polyphonic ringtones that are of very high quality and it supports Java™ applications, which means that games and other applications can be downloaded. The memory is quite limited at just 1.8 Mbytes, which is not a lot for storing video clips, photos, ringtones and games.

Finally, the GX15 has full Bluetooth™ wireless support. One of the disappointments of the GX30 was that the Bluetooth support was limited to connecting a wireless headset. The GX15 also allows Bluetooth communication with a PC and other Bluetooth phones. This enables you to transfer photos and videos to a compatible PC or laptop.

Inevitably the GX15 is going to be compared with the Sony Ericsson T630. The phones look similar, are almost exactly the same size and weight and have almost the same features. The GX15 does not have the smart looks of the T630, but it has all the features, with the addition of a video camera. Overall, this is an excellent value phone that offers video recording, full Bluetooth functionality (plus infrared and USB), an excellent screen and triband operation in a neat and lightweight package.

Features of the Sharp GX15 include:

  • Camera: 350,000 pixels, 4x digital zoom, continuous shooting (4 shots maximum)
  • Video camera: record video clips up to 100 kbytes
  • Display: TFT, 65,000 colours, 120 x 160 pixels
  • 40-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Bluetooth™ support for headset, car kits, PC's and other Bluetooth phones
  • USB and infrared connectivity
  • MMS (multimedia messaging)
  • Downloadable Java™ games
  • Internal memory: 1.8 Mbytes
  • WAP, GPRS
  • Triband operation
  • Weight: 84g
  • Size: 105 x 45 x 18 mm

This is a decnet phone. The battery length is fine, the sound is fone, the camera is fine, the screen size is nice and big, it has all the features except mp3. To get a phone with bluetooth, WAP, GPRS, etc. for the price you can is brilliant. On the downside the memory is fairly small - I have 50 pictures, 30 ringtones, 2 games and 7 (10 second) videos, and it almost full-up. Not a phone to get if wanting lots of memory but i paid £90 when i got mine and i am delighted by it (had no problems with it)

Got this phone for Christmas as an upgrade, wasnt sure about it at first but like the look of it. The Camera isnt bad but video could be a bit longer, only recorded about 10 seconds! Battery life however is very bad, i hardly used the phone and the battery seem to go down over 2 days, thats the only thing that lets it down. I sent it back and am now awaiting the GX30i which apparently has excellent reviews. We will see....

Made the change from a Samsung E700 at christmas and at first wasn't to sure whether it was a change for the best. However to this day (6/1/05) i'm really pleased with it. It's such a small, neat little phone packed with un thinkable new features, the bluetooth is such a nice addition. Screen resolution is low but of course for a budget phone is excellent and i couldnt pick out one complaint about it so far. Reception is a little low at times though. Really happy so far and well recommended.

VIDEO IS ONLY ABOUT 12 SECS BUT STILL WORTH HAVING. RINGTONES ARE ALSO GOOD. TEXTING IS EASY. COMES WITH 3 DEMO GAMES, MY FAVE IS PINBALL. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE GAME FOR FREE I THINK. The screen is very clear, the games are great, the bluetooth is very useful and the vid cam facility is phenomenal!! Great phone for price, nice big clear screen, camera ok, video ok, (with sound and you don't need earpiece to hear it - about 10 seconds worth can be recorded at a time) Memory a bit small but adequate. Took ages for Vodaphone to finally register me for GPRS/MMS and then had to reset phone by removing battery for it to work but now its fine and can send and receive MMS. One software bug found though anyone else noticed that you can't type the word 'haynet' in a T9 mode text message ?!?! And its got much better and faster user interface than the samsung p510 !

Do we really need a phone to take pics? No, yes... whatever.. the thing is: it has a camera and it works very well for the screen it has. It doesn't need a lot of memory cause the resolution was certainly chosen for an optimization with the screen size. If you want to use those photos on a PC, just let me know a cellular that is capable to take suitable photos for it. Get a real camera instead. Hey, we just need some snapshots and for that the quality is really cool. We can easily forget that we have it in our pocket. For the rest it works perfectly! The price? Amazing!

The camera isn't brilliant but at the end of the day you've purchased a phone, not a camera. Textin is really easy to do on this phone! Good job too as that is mainly what I use the phone for. Got the phone as a free upgrade from Voda, now i know why it was free... The phone is rubbish. A nightmare to switch on and off, i've never had to hold a button as long. CAMERA The camera isn't even VGA, very jerky vision when trying to take a picture and the quality has only two settings, either OK or FINE (which is not that fine), the Video is worse, only lasts enough for a very short video message or about 8/9 second of longer recording. Again quility is poor. MEMORY What memory? It has about 1Mb, my Samsung E-700 has 8Mb, that's right, 8X, considering this is a new phone it is lacking some vital stats there. FEATURES Granted the phone has a lot of features such as WAP, IRDA, USB (but you aren't supplied with a cable), BLUETOOTH (nothing supplied there either, and no hands free kit [should come standard these day with the law]) and of course the CAMERA (not impressed) OVERALL I think looking at some of Sharps other models they could have made a much better phone out of their resources.... Not impressed at all... Anyone want to buy it, still boxed?...

Don't let yourself convince by the negative reviews on this phone. The screen quality is excelent, those who are not happy with the erginomy of the buttons are probably people who needs keyboards the size of a 1980's cell phone and those who complain about the size of the memory or the quality of the pictures do not take into consideration the very reasonable price of this excellent GSM... That becomes outstanding if you take into consideration all this phone offers (camera, video, bluetooth and very nice features+ sober, classy design in excellent materials). Really a five star for smart buyers who don't need/want flashy kitsh cell phones to show-off... It's a chic, simple to use , high quality and reasonable priced phone!

This phone was purchased as a (relatively) cheap replacement for a water damaged Nokia of ancient heritage. This phone is small and the ladies will have many problems, I suspect, in finding it in their handbags. Before purchase I was a little concerned at the size of the keys but it is surprisingly easy to use despite having large male fingers. The menu is easy to navigate and, generally, logically laid out. Predictive text seems to work OK although I've never been a fan of it. The pictures are quite adequate considering the resolutions available and Bluetooth works without problems for moving sound and picture files as well as being able to maintain the contacts offline and send SMS messages via the PC. I haven't yet tried it on handsfree but can see no reason why it shouldn't work. Infrared connects with my PC but I haven't used as I haven't loaded the IR version of the Handset Manager software. For me, the memory capacity hasn't been a problem - how many ringtones and pictures do you want to keep on a phone anyway when it's so easy to offload them onto a PC? The only annoying thing I have found is that you cannot turn off the shutter sound - probably to stop clandestine photos being taken! Overall an excellent phone for the money.

What can i say, I boughht this phone a week ago. Its really sweet. I love the wap. The screen is huge I think and super bright, It great in the daylight too. Great fun , light weight and small, great looking. it has a plug for the charger at the bottom so no connection ports are expossed. A+++. Joy stick isent as bad as allthese reviews say. real fun, stable, hasent crashed yet. They software for the infared is great. automatically updates all your junk and links your fone book to outlook so you can have just one phone book. Super! best fone i think in its range. Bluetooth. what can i say, I sent my mum some photo's thru a brick wall. She didnt know what was going on. great fone.

Nice looking phone. Not bulky. Very light. Buttons very close together. Centre key(joystick/navigation) is awkward to use. Auto keylock is erratic! Menu structure for deleting messages is not great as you can too easily delete all messages instead of just the message you've looked at. Prefer my old GX10.
