Sharp GX10i

rating:
The
Sharp GX10i mobile phone is the successor to the GX10, offering
triband capability and improved camera functions. It comes in a
distinctive anthracite colour, to distinguish it from the older
GX10.
The
Sharp GX10i was one of the best multimedia phones when it launched,
with MMS, 65,000 colour TFT display, and an
integrated digital camera with 110,000 pixels, digital zoom and
storage for up to 80 pictures. However it cannot compare with more
modern camera phones. It suffers from having a poor quality camera
and no easy way of transferring pictures from the phone to a PC.
Features
of the Sharp GX10i include:
- WAP,
GPRS
- 16
voice polyphonic ringtones, ringtone composer
- High
resolution colour display (120 x 160 pixels, 65,536 colours) plus

- Multimedia

I will try and keep this short and to the point. I brought a T610
mainly because I heard and read such bad things about the GX10i's
battery life, but 2 weeks later I had changed it to a GX10i. I use
my phone for txts and the odd drunken call on a weekend...lol. Since
Ive had the GX10i ive charged it twice in two weeks! It takes 2
hours to charge and after reading some reviews I thought by the
time I had a look around the phone and taken some pics the battery
would be dead.......not the case so please dont let that put you
off! The keys are big and easy to find unlike the T610 and also
that large TFT screen is crystal clear. Ive also noticed that the
pictures are of a far better quality than the T610. I wont carry
on with the many good points, because if like me the battery was
the issue I have covered that. This is my first flip top phone and
I for one am very happy with it, plus I got it for £179.99 which
was a bonus and in the sale at a certain high street store...just
think stupid adverts ;-)

Got this phone a couple of days ago as an "upgrade" from my sl45i.
but to be honest its not much of one. ok so it has colour screen
and a camera. I'm not entirely unimpressed by the camera but i wouldn't
seek it out. The one thing i liked with the siemens is the fact
you had access to the file system via irda. I liked the fact that
i could get ringtones and games for free from spurious sources but
on this fone its nigh on impossible and im not paying 2 quid or
whatever to dl a ringtone to get bored of it 2 hours later... It's
a pretty average phone but to be honest guys the phones being released
lately arent up to much . cept maybe the new SE or SPV. I got the
phone for free on a really good pay monthly deal so i'm not too
fussed. but this phone could easily be better.

Well theres nothing much to say about this phone except it is absoloutely
fab. If you have £250 go out and get yourself one and you can trust
me because i have had my fair share of mobile phones (about 14)
since they came out and this is the best so far. And you will be
the envy of all your mates if you get it, with its superb polyphonic
ringtones (16 chords, which are great) and superb colour screen.
The bottom line is if you have the money get it because nothing
comes close to it on the phone market at the moment. Well except
the Gx20 but thats £150 more just for a video recorder and that
only records 50 secs. So for £250 its a bargain buy it!

As many of the previous reviewers, I am a former Nokia user and
whilst the phone is good allround I think the initial novelty has
worn off. The camera is great fun but the phone is missing basic
things like SNOOZE on the alarm clock and inserting words into texts
when using predictive texting. New features are always good but
don't forget what people actually use their phones for! Can't manufacturers
make these phones with integrated aerials? (Me used to the Nokia

the phone is fantastic! ive had no problems with the battery life
- even after constant use of the camera and games. the 16 voice
polyphonic tones are a joy to listen to although some of the supplied
tones are mearly sound effects. the screen is very bright and therefore
clear with the screen still being quite easily visible when the
backlight is turned off. camera quality is exellent-however, this
is the only camera phones pics that ive saw, but i own a digital
camera and the shots are acceptable for when the camera is left
at home. the external screen is also bright and clear- with the
contrast being adjustable. the keys are responsive, although it
is sometimes difficult to acknowledge a key press when typing quickly.
the memory of 700kb doesnt appear to be large enough on paper, however
i have stored around 40 pictures at the medium size, one java game
and one downloaded ringtone and have only used 40% of the memory
(the phonebook memory is seperate from this pool t hough which allows
for 200 entries). overall, the sharp gx10i is a perfect phone for
me, although the lack of bluetoth will restrict its use with those
that need such a feature. there are other, better phones available
for higher prices, such as my preferred choice the GX20- but as
that was priced too high at the moment, the gx10i is the best phone
in the £200-230 price bracket available at present on a pay and
go tariff.

Just so the normal folk out there know, this phone can also be used
by people who still both write and read in English. My previous
phone was a Nokia 8310, the only thing that sells that is the name
Nokia. Now this Sharpe GX10i is the phone that covers most things
to a good degree of quality. I've only had mine for a day and I've
found my way around it's functions without the use of the manual.
If you've got one of these phone's do not even bother looking through
the manual until you've figured most of it out. The manual is hopeless,
just check manual for things you may have missed yourself. People
here at slating the fact the photo quality isn't great, well that's
true but the phone is designed as a phone not a camera. If you want
the pixel perfect pictures, BUY A DIGITAL CAMERA, if you want amusing
snapshot photo's use a phone, this way it also takes away the worry
of connection to PC's. You really don't need to connect a phone
to a PC to view a photo. The quality isn't worth the effort. The
photo's are more for fun, than to help you win photographer of the
year. If you want quality photo's spend £300 on a camera and not
a £20 per month contract with a phone company. I'm sure as mobile
technolgy progresses it will get better. The games market for this
phone is huge and includes Fifa 2004, which looks very good but
the controls are fiddly. Back to the phone, once you've found your
ways through the menus everything is pretty straight forward. Someone
mentioned that the phone has a small inbox, which if true (I don't
know) but why would you want more than 10 messages in your inbox
in one go? It's a communication tool not a storage tool.Personally
I think people are hoping for too much too soon and too cheap. Overall,
I like this phone. It does what it is supposed to do with lots of
extra's games, music editor etc, tunes and games also to download
and if you're only paying £20 a month for a year, it's well priced.

far! I have always been a Nokia person, but having this phone has
made me see just how boring, old and dated Nokias really are! It
looks great, has good camera facilities, great games, good ringtones,
nice picture quality..etc - the one thing that Nokia does pip the
Sharp on is texting, but we all know theres nothing we can do about
this (I can live with it though!), Nokia do have the best texting
capabilities to their credit. For the money i paid for this phone

The picture quality is, i think, the best out of its class and after
having ago on my mates Sony Ericsson T610 i can honostly say the

the first one that comes to mind it the life of the battery. Excuse
my french but its absolutly SHAT PANK. At first i though it was
because i hadnt charged it for long enough, but then after leaving
it on charge over night i was amazed to find out it was dead at

camera is ok but useless unless you get a cable to connect with

with all phones anyway) infrared's only use is when phone serves
as a modem. not enough memory for sms and uncomfortable keypad for
writting sms. also sms editor not good enough. calendar useless
since there is no reminder. overall: just a toy. not for serious

It works fine as an IR modem and I use it regularly to connect to
my company's LAN remotely but it seems that is it's only use. What
it can't do is be used for sending pictures to & from PC, it can't
be used for IRing pictures, addresses or ringsignals (or anything
else for that matter) to another phone, even another Sharp. The
calendar function is all but useless........no reminder option,
no alarm feature, no synchronisation with anything. Some of it's
good features are the camera & screen - far better than a lot of

£200 on it. I previously had a Nokia 8210 and SonyEricsson T300.
The T300 was simply cr#p as it displayed poor colour and low sounding
tones. So when i purchased the GX10i i was a bit worried but i was
proven wrong. The phone displays colour fantastically and the tones
are loud and clear. The menu systems are easy and in-depth and the
camera is good quality and clear, especially compared to the T300
camera which was crap and dark. The only downside to the phone is
the size, bulkyness and weight which can be a problem as you cannot
slip it into your pocket without having a bulk appearing. The other
downside is that the phone has no Bluetooth. Overall and excellent

a microscope to properly see a hardcopy image. batteries keep running
out mid way through a conversation, annoying. I dropped it once
on carpet from about my hip height, and the screen part broke off.
I am stuck with it now for a two year overpriced contract, it still
works, but i have to hold it together tightly with both hands, and
squeeze the side so poeple can hear me talk, and the camera dosent
work anymore. It also rattles a bit. I cant bring myself to trash

Hi, I bought this phone just over a month ago and I think it is
great. I did know at the time that there was a newer version coming
out, the GX20, but wasn't sure when in NZ. Vodafone were offering
such a great deal on the phone at the time that I went with the
GX10i. I did have some problems with connecting to VodafoneLive
and downloading games and ringtones but vodafone sorted these problems
out. Pet bugs: 1. Infrared - I use to own a NOKIA 6210 which was
also a great phone. This had the great feature of being able to
customise the phone via infrared. I really don't know why the Sharp
GX10i didn't offer this also. If they did it would be the best phone
ever. 2. Bluetooth - This phone doesn't have it, really should,
makes for easier future upgrades. ie car kits, headsets 3. Menu
- Can be a little frustrating sometimes. An example is when taking
a picture you click the main center button. then to save you click
the left soft key. (this is ok) the problem is if you accidentally
push the center key again it goes into send to someone mode. if
you want to go back to taking another picture you have to start
all over again 4. Active Folder - this is when you open or close
the phone. should have been an option to turn on or off a feature
that allowed calls to be answered by simply opening the phone but
you have to open phone then press the pickup button. it already
disconnects when you shut it. 5a. Phone Book - this was really annoying!
i noticed that if you want to have quick dial numbers then you have
to have the number on the sim card. ok, but if you want to use the
cool picture caller id, then you have to have the number on the
phone!?! that means you have to double up if you want both. why
couldn't it have just been on the phone as well. 5b. Phone Book
- you have to copy each address from the sim to phone one by one.
no copy all. this was really annoying. you shouldn't need to do
it often but still. 6. Voice Memo - it would have been really nice
if it allowed recorded sounds to be used as you ringtone. i know
on some polyphonic phone you can do this. why not the GX10i. 7.
Not really a bug but - the camera function has 2 modes. i have read
the manual and asked the vodafone help desk but no one has been
able to give a straight answer as to what the difference between
them are. strange. Ok that is all the little bugs i found with the
phone. other than that i have had alot of fun and with it and it
is a great phone :)

Sounds like there is a lot of people out there that like the GX10i.
I personally think its pretty ordinary. those trying to download
between there pc and phone via infra red you are waisting there
time if you look closely at the documentation for the phone the
ir port will only allow you to use the phone as a gsm modem. for
additional features upload/download pics you need the data cable.
after blowing about 100 dollars you will find thats all it lets
you do. you cannot alter phonebook, sms, download ringtones or games
etc via your pc. if all you want is a camera for taking low quality
pics or are happy to spend a heap of money to download extras from
vodafone live then maybe you should save that money and buy a real
phone. either that or get it for a young child cos it appears that
sharp now may toys.

On recieving this phone i was extremely happy. The phone itself
crys out with quality and style (if a little bulky in the pocket).
It only took 2 hours to charge before i could play with it and as
soon as you turn it on a very pleasing extremly clear and colourful
display greats you. A child of 2 could operate the menu system which
again makes you feel happy. !!!!However!!!! I am sending it back
for the following reasons ..... some of which you might feel are
a tad petty but when you are forced to live with it for a year (on
contract) you expect better... Firstly the Camera - good for a laugh
but NOTHING like as good as the Nokia 3650 - focus is blurred and
there is a BIG delay from the camera lens to the screen (meaning
what you see is what happened 1 second before!). The pics themselves
are a tad dark but good enough for fun i guess. Transfering these
pics is the main problem!! The GX10i user manual says infra red
is ONLY for using the phone as a modem and not for picture transfer....
the manual then specifically says buy a DATA CABLE to download images
- i did this and also downloaded 'handset PICTURE manager for GX10i'
from Sharp-mobile.com (the official website) as recomended. The
cable installs but refuses to connect to the phone.... So i look
at the FAQs on Sharp-Mobile.com - there it specifically says the
Data Cable acts 'exactly the same as infra red and it is in NO WAY
possible to download images with it!!'.... the complete opposite
to the GX10i official user manual! Unbelievable!! How can Sharp
offer software for a cable that will NEVER work!! Other gripes are
GPRS which is yet to work and diverts to using CSD (costing 10p
per minute rather than 1p per 10Kbs downloaded!!)... for a phonethat
is designed for Vodafone Live this is pretty poor! Picture messages
don't work. Txting is awkward as the buttons are inset into the
phone and the screen is VERY top heavy so one hand txting is a bit
awkward. Downloading ringtones is not done via txt messages on this
phone (unlike nokia/Ericson) ... you have to use the WAP on the
phone to access a URL address and download.... I tried 4 times from
ringtonesuk.com and never got the correct one!! (which i believe
was the phone not the website although i could be wrong) In conclusion
- beutiful design, excellent build and good if you only use it for
phone calls. Sorry Sharp but contradicting your own manual is a
BIG no no in my book and i should try and get my £20 back from you!....

Only had the phone a few days, but so far have been very impressed.
Look and feel of the phone is really nice. I especially like the
little click when opening the phone, a minor point I know, but it
makes me happy. I was concerned about about scratching the phone,
in and out pocket etc.. so decided to buy a protective case. I didn't
want to spoil the look of the phone so opted for a nice Body Glove
number, I'm now happy in the knowledge that it's classy finish is
well protected. The funtionality of the phone is extremely user
friendly, with messaging an absolute doddle. To be honest, their
isn't anything i feel i need to do that I cant. Sharp have obvoiusly
thought long and hard about the needs of the user, and this comes
across loud and clear. The predictive text is so easy to use, with
the keys nicely spaced apart and soft to press that the message
is typed and sent in a blink. And it allows personal words to be
added the dictionary, very handy when constantly putting in fo r
example a name that it wouldn't normally know. I've briefly used
the Voderfone Live option, to varying degrees of success, as with
any internet connection, the ability to connect does vary somewhat,
but a minor problem that I'm sure occurs in all internet based phones.
The quality of the camera really surprised me, I was expecting a
poor picture quality that was more a selling gimic than usable tool,
oh how wrong I was. Pictures taken close up are bloody fab, further
away they seem to pixilate a little, but hey, if I wanted a digital
camera, I would have bought one. The camera is so much better than
the likes of the Samsung V200. Recently had a stag do in Ireland,
with both the Sharp and Samsung taking pics like for like and the
difference was amazing, Even in dark conditions, the sharp produce
average to good pictures, whereas the samsung produces bugger all.
Catch up samsung, your well behind. The only reason anyone would
recomend you buy a samsung for example, is eithe r they have not
used the Sharp GX10i or they enjoy using a phone that fails to deliver
at every level. I don't normally bother to review any products I
buy, but I've been so impressed to date with my new purchase I felt
it only fair to give my impartial view of the this totally wicked
phone. Updating your phone.....then look no further. Never had a
phone before.....then look no further.......Want to impress.......then
look no further... Want a phone that looks great but is as useful
as speaking into a house brick, then buy the Samsung V200 and fill
ya boots.............I think you get the picture....Enjoy.. Please
note that these views are my personally feelings. I suggest going
to your local high street phone shop and getting a demo of all the
phones you like, it's important to view them youself to be sure
of the right choice.

For a phone with many functions (Camera blah blah blah) it is also
deisgned very well. Looks stylish and attrative. The only aspect
I wished was better was the camera and picture quality. Ok, phones
are phones and we can't exactly expect them to be as good as video
cameras or have quality pictures as a digital camera, but I would
have liked the picture quality to be better. Like in comparision

just excels. Battery life is a lot better than most phones out there
and charging is done in less than an hour! Anyone deciding on which
phone to chose from should not hesitate in buying this one! you
will not be disappointed!!!!

This is the best one I have ever had and I have had quite a few.
Last one was a V200 but sold that since it was so cheesy. Top is
the color screen, which is so vivid and bright, it beats anything
in the market. It looks so cool even when switched off. A lot of
though has gone into making this phone. Which you can instantly
see, since its so customable to your taste, even down to the number
of minutes the lights are switched on. The only down is the battery
lenght, you do need to charge every 12 hours.

I bought this phone for its camera and Vodafone Live! ability, and
it hasn't disappointed me at all. i love it and the canmera part,
once you know what you are doing,is easy to use and send pics to
e/mail and other and other compatible mms phones. Great phone for
what they are intended, and i love sending "home"by camera, my latest
fish i've just caught!
