Sharp GX1 Review
Phone
rating:
The
Sharp GX1 mobile phone was one of the first camera phones and includes
an integrated digital camera with 110,000 pixels, digital zoom and
storage for up to 80 pictures. Whilst the GX1 features a high quality
TFT display, it suffers from having a poor quality camera and no
easy way of transferring pictures from the phone to a PC. It is
also an unreliable phone. Also consider the Sharp
GX10 which has all the features of the GX1, but with the addition
of downloadable Java applications, and in a flip design, instead
of the GX1's straight design.
Features
of the Sharp GX1 include:
- WAP,
GPRS
- 16
voice polyphonic ringtones, ringtone composer
- High
resolution colour display (120 x 160 pixels, 65,536 colours)
- MMS
- Enhanced

- Built-in

- Predictive

I got my GX1 when it first came out 5 or 6 years ago and it was
pretty much top of the range then. Compared to a modern phone its
features are poor, so I wouldn't recommend you buy one now. Although
it can be a tad unreliable, once you get used to its quirks you
can resolve all problems easily. I still use mine every day and
am keeping it as long as I can! The ringtone editor is the best
I have ever seen on any phone, but you do need to know how to read
music in order to use it...

and also u must be very good at music before you can compose a ringtone

What a HUGE disappointment. Composer - you need a degree in music
to understand it, sms was a pain in the ass to use, sound quality
was tinny on calls, its a brick and is just AWFUL. I complained
to O2 within the 21 days, left it a bit and after becomming thoroughly
fed up with it called them again and they gave me a nice nokia to
replace it (as I'd made first complaint within 21 days) Gave it
to daughter who hates it too but beggars cant be choosers hey?!
Only thing I found mildly interesting as the games were poo too
was the internet access, thats when it could connect.... Would never

about the Sharp's lack of connectivity/MP3 player/memory etc. What
a sucker. The Sharp was able to make a call from anywhere on the
planet (no exaggeration) whilst the brand spanking new/state of

I had my GX-1 for 2 years now and I'm totally pleased with it! Never
had a better phone - and I've gone through seemingly hundreds over
the years. Because I work with horses, my mobiles have to be simple:
indestructible, easy texting, good size so I can always find it
or squeeze it between shoulder/ear to talk with my hands free -
and a camera is a bonus. I also never had a problem with battery
life not being enough and find the menu dead easy to operate, especially
when texting! It's fast & the punctuation menu is the best of all
the phones I had! 2 years ago, when the GX-1 was new, it was top
notch, now it has been overtaken by other brands that offer more
technology, but now you get more accessories for it, like data cables
to transfer pics to a computer. So - if you want a no-nonsense phone
to make phone calls and send sms' or take the occasional piccie
with a phone that's different, go for the GX-1!!! But if you're
into playing games, browsing the internet, downloa ding ringtones
and all that kiddie stuff, then the GX-1 is not for you. Get a labtop!!!

As a devoted, die-hard Nokia fan, I never thought I'd like another
phone. This one is OK, although it has its faults, but I'm planning
to go back to Nokia next time around. Most of the major faults have
already been listed - poor image quality, fast battery drain, lack
of peripherals (no USB charger especially a pain for me) - but one
thing I dislike from a girlie, gadget point of view is the difficulty
in getting sensibly priced tones for it. I mean, £4.50 for Hotel
California? Get real... Seriously, though - the GX1 isn't the greatest
phone I've ever used but it's definitely better than some of the
pieces of garbage I've had in the past. Frivolous, fun but not for

I've had the Sharp GX1 for about 5 months now and I can't say like
so many people that it's bad. It has it's shortcomings but overall
I think it's a pretty decent phone for the 50 euros it costed me.
The big plusses are the keyboard, screen and size of the phone.
It's actually a phone and not something you lose along with your
change. The screen still is great and comparable to the new phones
now and the keyboard is ideal for messaging with enough room for
your fingers. Another good thing is the browser. It has everything
you need on 10 lines. The ringtones are okay but the possibility
to download any ringtone or picture through the browser makes it
excellent. The big downside is the connectivity. It's only connectable
to a PC for the modem function, if you want to transfer pictures
for instance you have to send yourself an e-mail. But as the camera
is probably intended for MMS it's not as big a problem as some people
like to say. The 288x352 pixel camera is okay for messagin g, and
if you need to e-mail a picture to your pc the quality isn't that
bad either. If you want to take holiday pictures you should take
a digital camera, or wait for the mobile phones to evolve, shouldn't
take much more than a year or so. But don't blame it on the GX1,
it wasn't intended for that...

before i start i want to say i don't like nokia phones - i've always
used samsung which i find much intuitive and easy to use. The sharp
gx1 comes somewhere above a nokia and below a samsung. I had no
problems using it - very easy, though i do understand problems encountered
by previous nokia users. The quality of the phone is excellent,
screen is Vgood and the ringtone clarity is the best i've heard.
I also had no problems with the predictive text which is very good
once you've used it a couple of times. The two main downfalls of
the phone is the lack of connectivity and the below par camera (which
will either take great pics, or rubbish ones - no in between!) No
data cable included and not being able to upload pics is a big disadvantage,
no blue tooth either. However most people seem to buy a new phone
every year or two and this phone should do me for the next 12months.

This phone is terrible - I am amazed that anyone is pleased with
it - they have obviously never owned a Nokia before ! Bad points
-> The menu system is ridiculous and completely counter-intuitive.
The camera is a huge disappointment quality wise - and as said elsewhere,
there is no way to download pics to PC. MMS take ages to send (when
they work at all). The predictive text simply does not work as well
as Nokia. You have to acknowledge everything several times. Easy
to lose a composed text once it has told you it is too long for
a single SMS and asked if you want to edit. Keypad cannot cope with
quick sequential input. Turning the phone on and off takes silly
amounts of time (almost as long as Windows). The battery life is
terrible - probably due to the nicely lit screen (worse than my
nearly dead 2.5 year old 3310). Alarm and calendar is useless -
can't add text to alarms. The phone occasionally turns itself off.
After 4.5 months of infrequent use and good care, mine has just
stopped working completely. Most of the ringtones although snazzy
are not very loud. The inbuilt games are incredibly dire - nice
grahics - completely unplayable (when will they learn ?) The memory
for texts is pretty small. Good points-> Phone looks nice and screen
is very impressive (so bright - can even use as a torch at night
if desperate). Front LCD is useful and practical. Flip-front design
is nice - saves use of keypad lock. Thats it, I'm out. Do not buy
this phone. Go for quality (Sony) or usability (Nokia).

I bought one of these December last year as I wanted a colour mobile
that looked nice and wasn't too expensive. Having used it extensivly
for the last 9 months I have a few complaints but they are not too
serious. Bad things 1. Battery life is dire. I had nokias before
this and always got at least 2 days out of one charge no matter
how knackered a battery was. The GX-1 works fine if you charge it
every night but it you forget it will be pretty much dead by the
following morning. That being said it is relatively quick to charge
at about an hour which is handy. 2. Screen visibility in sun light.
Practically illegible, need to shade it with you hand to read a
text message. 3. Crippled IR port. The IR port can only be used
as a modem. It doesn't even work as a gprs modem, only the old fashions
dail up which is a pain. So no transfering images from your phone
to the PC using this, they have to be sent over the network (at
the operators request to Sharp from what I understand) Good things
To be fair to the phone it does have it good points as well! 1.
Screen is nice and colourfull with good resolution. Also the rining
and startup and shutdown animations are a very nice touch! 2. Ringtones,
lots of fun, good repoduction of Midis, even up to 16 channel midis
which is really good! also the fact that you can browser to wap
midi sites and download the ring tomes for free rather than paying
4 quid a pop for them is nice! 3 woo, shiny! it has to be said it
is a nice looking phone and the screen size allows plenty of space
for your wallpaper to impress your freinds (or confuse them as the
case may be *cough*). 4. Menu system, The menus on the GX-1 are
nice and fast! I have found on some phones that you can be waiting
an age for the thing to flick from one menu item to teh next, which
the gx-1 is nice and zippy with big friendly menu icons. Thumbs
up. All in all it is a good phone that is let down by its battery.
If you get an offer of a cheap one with a spare battery it is definitly
worth a look.

camera) but the basics are good. The GRPS WAP is good (nice big
clear screen and 10 lines visible). The phone lets itself down because
the battery runs out every day and a half and you can't get any
decent accessories. I need a USB charger (no way) and a USB data
cable. All you can get is a data cable with a 9-pin DIN connector
- how 20th Century can you get? And it looks as if it is being withdrawn
now so little chance of Sharp getting any decent accessories out.
Interference from the signal is huge (what is it doing to my brain?).
If it had some add-ons it would rate above average but otherwise,
get yourelf a mainstream phone.

The phone is not only the latest edge in mms technology, and one
of the first MMS Cameraphones out, but its also stylish for a phone
of its size. The Pros + MMS and Novel Camera + Large, LCD screen
+ Polyphonic Sound + Lots of features + Great internet speeds +
Sturdy Build The Cons - Quite Chunky compared to the new Samsung
and Panasonic models. - Sound not loud enough, only a few polyphonic
tunes give a loud enough performance. - The Battery life is only
around 2 days under EXTENSIVE use

What a pile of ****! I'd rather use a peice of string and 2 cups
than this pathetic excuse for a phone. It causes more electrostatic
interference than a 20 tonne nuclear warhead, (it's the after shock
i'm talking about)! The picture quality is so poor a 2 year old
could draw better! Wap is unreliable so you will never get any decent
ring tones in the thing. Overall I am so disappointed with the SH*T
GX1.

I recently got a Sagem MyX5 because i wanted a colour phone, i had
no problems with it except it had alot of limits to what it could
do. The screen colour wasn't brilliant but it was better than those
c##ppy green and black nokia things. Now im not one of these "LOVE
NOKIA ONLY" people, my first phone was a nokia and i've since used
5 different models all Nokia until i went over to the Sagem, now
im using the Sharp GX1. At first i was put back by reviews, especially
those saying its hard to navigate in the menus and the camera is
bad. Well all i can say is dont listen to them... The menu system
is great and easy to use, of course learning your way around takes
time like any phone and the Camera is brilliant. One thing people
should get into their SMALL MINDS is that its a funcam not a real
digital outfit. Its meant for on the spot pictures and its brilliant
for that use. The MMS on the phone is easy and great and emailing
is so easy, no need to bloody change the format of the text or anything.
So far i dont have one problem with the phone after 2 months usage.
The screen resolution is pure eye candy, i found that most pictures
on the wapnet aren't up to the GX1's display capabilites!. If your
looking for a colour phone with the camera, go for this or its big
brother the GX10, ignore those nokia lovers.

Overall a nice phone that many of my friends call a "babe puller"
and a "posers phone". Picture quality is acceptable only in the
high resolution mode, and even then it's really nothing more than
a sub VGA grainy image that will not fill at home anywhere outside
your phone. Viewing the images on the phones (admirably large) display
however is another matter, and having a pint of lager as my "background"
image gets sighs from the girls, and cheers from the guys. Smallish,
around the same size as my old Nokia 6110, 6150 and 6210 (I used
to be a Nokia Guy) - it is built well, looks very nice in the silver
colouring and the interface is adequate (but not outstanding). Many
compare this to the Nokia 7650, but to me the 7650 looks like a
small brick and sex appeal is zero. Lets face it you buy this phone
just as much for image as for functionality, and on this basis,
the Sharp wins hands down. Call quality is excellent (on par with
the 6210) and it holds 02 pretty well. Some may be interested to
know that the CELL ID feature actually works on this phone! Another
cool (but network dependent) feature. 5 stars for image, 4 stars
for functionality.

Having owned a 7659, I have to say I find the GX1 a refreshing change
from the nokia. The size alone, considering it has a built in camera,
is astonishing. Also, the fact that it is compatible with most ringtones
and wallpapers means that the possibilities are almost endless,
and keeping your phone trendy is not a problem. I change my phone
once a year, and this one is a real treat. All in all, a winner!!

in all honesty there are other handsets that do the same thing as
the gx1 but far better. For a start it does not support java to play
games. The camera is built in which adds to ease of use, but quality
wise is no better than a web cam for such a high resolution screen. The
menue system leaves a lot to be desired, i would find my way better
in the brazzilian jungle!other options are the 7650 or 3650 which
are much better in quality and plus they use a symbian os which
enables you to update and change software.
