Samsung
Z400 Review
Phone
rating:
The
Z400 is the first Samsung phone to feature 3G technology in a slider
design. The slider design has become hugely popular during the past
couple of years, so it's nice to see a 3G slider on the market.
At first glance the Z400 looks like a silver D500 - slightly wider
and longer, but substantially thinner. It's a little heavier than
the D500, but nevertheless quite lightweight for a 3G phone.
The
Z400 has two cameras: a VGA camera (0.3 megapixels) for video calling
and a high-quality 2 megapixel CMOS camera for still shots. It's
a shame that there's no flash for night-time photography, but in
good light the camera delivers excellent results. The display is
very high quality: 262k colours and 320 x 240 pixels.
The
music player supports a wide range of formats including MP3, WMA
and AAC and is stereo. Best results are obtained using a stereo
headset - standard or Bluetooth headsets are available as optional
extras. The inbuilt speaker is OK but not the best around.
Memory
capacity is 30 Mbytes with support for a memory card, but it's a
shame that no memory card is supplied as standard. Battery life
is poor, and certainly doesn't seem to live up to Samsung's stated
standby time of 13 days.
Bonus
features include a document viewer with support for common document
formats including Word and Excel, and an offline mode for use on
an aircraft or to conserve battery life when playing music. Minor
gripes with this phone are that when the slide is closed, the display
is blank, so you have to open the slide to see the date and time
or missed calls. The D500 displayed this information in standby
mode, so why can't the Z400? Generally, the Z400 doesn't seem to
be as polished as the D500 - the menus are harder to navigate around,
the speaker quality is lower, and the battery life is a real problem.
The Z400 is a good phone in many ways, but is let down by these
issues.
Features
of the Samsung Z400 include:
- 3G
video calling
- 2
megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
- VGA
video camera (640 x 480 pixels)
- Display:

i got this phone as a vodafone one and had it unblocked so i can
use 02,i don't know whether its the fact that its vodafone model
or not but its not half as user friendly as the D500, only one other
person touched on the point about how long it takes to send a text, there's
far too many questions prompted, the same goes for deleting texts.
The other disappointing difference is the lack of flash or light
on the camera, night mode just isn't good enough, and for a newer
model than the D500 i expected better. The phone is however easy
on the eye and my coverage has improved since reading the earlier
posts about dissabling 3G.If this model was more user friendly then
it would be brilliant, alas apart from the camera quality Samsung
have gone backwards

Only had it a short time but am please with this phone overall.
After reading previous reviews I was worried I'd end up with a rubbish
battery and a dodgy message tone I couldn't change, but the battery
is OK and I can choose the beep I want for messages so I'm happy.
Have found it easy to use and personalise and now wonder why I've
always had a Nokia before. Only criticism, on Nokias you can choose
to view your contact list from your SIM or phone memory, or both.
I can't work out if you can do this on the Z400 as mine lists both
SIM and phone contacts. Of course I could delete my phone contacts
and just view the SIM ones but would rather not... Any suggestions
gratefully received.

Had this phone since November 06 now. I've always had Nokia's so
was a bit dubious about changing but decided to give it a go. I'm
still learning what it can do and for the most part it's a great
phone. The gripes are the same as the majority I feel, battery doesn't
late as long as it could, signal reception very poor compared to
my old Nokia and I can't personalise the message alert tone. I read
Frazer's tip below posted on 5/9/06 and changed from 3G to GSM900/1800
and as soon as I did that my signal strength doubled (?) and hopefully
it will impact on battery life. The only other minor bits and bobs
are that the charger plugging into the side makes it a bit fiddly
to handle the phone when it's plugged in and adding contacts for
sending messages is a bit long-winded. Having the screen blank is
a great idea to save battery life but it means if for some reason
you've been away from your phone for any length of time you can't
just glance at it to see if you've missed any calls/messages or
see the date/time etc without physically making it light up. Overall
I think it's good bit of kit.

need to recharge it every day nearly. Loud speak is also very poor
keeps breaking up when using it hands free. Unlike the trusty Nokia's
you can't change the message alert tone to anything other than what
is pre-installed. The only good thing about this phone is the camera

I've had this phone 3 months now and my opinion of it decreases
by the day... This is ONLY down to the MP3 implementation, it's
poor at best. Sound quality is mushy, volume is low. But these are
the good points. You cannot create folders so all tunes are in the
root of you memory card, once you get any kind of quantity of tunes
on your memory card play lists take about 5-10 seconds to appear.
All songs have to be on play lists if you want to play one after
another, you can't just dump songs on and choose shuffle... and
speaking of shuffle... it's not random, it's always the same order
of songs. It doesn't remember where you left off so you have to
listen from the beginning of the shuffle list again... or play in
sequential order having skipped forward to where you were. If you've
got an MP3 playing and you receive a text message, you have no audible
indication this has happened. If you receive a phone call, the music
stops coming out of your ears and the phone itself starts playing
its ring tone. Volume for the MP3 is on the rocker switch on the
side of the phone, this is active regardless of the phones open
or closed status, therefore if it's in your pocket the volume may
change if you don't have the rocker switch facing out of your pocket...
which means your headphone cable if facing into your pocket. Whilst
listening to music you cannot read or write text messages / appointments
etc. To play an mp3 you need to go through at least 10 clicks to
actually play a track from a play list, this is assuming you're
playing it from the first track and not finding where you were the
last time you were listening. Generally the phone is good; it's
just woeful mp3 implementation lets it down... I have no idea how
this got past testing.

only two choices of screen - one with no-word icons (don't get me

I had this phone for little over a day. (or should I say, could
only tolerate it for little over a day.) To me, this is simply a
handset for people who want a multi-coloured flashy fashion accessory
that makes silly noises at different frequencies every time you
press a key. Whilst composing a text message, there is hardly any
room on the screen due to the gap inbetween lines (the need for
this i don't know) There's an inadequate amount of memory on it
without the purchase of a memory card, which unsurprisingly isn't
supplied. The menus are incredibly slow, most of the time I found
myself 3 stages ahead, whilst waiting for the thing to catch up
with my commands. Again, the summary (and this is in noway sexist)
if you're a 13 year old girl, who wants lots of flashy lights and
annoying little noises which can be changed into something 'delightful'
and even more 'colourful' then great! however if you're not & you
don't plan on looking like a twit everytime you need to send a text
then browse on.... the E900 or D900 appear to be awesome!

it for a week, like i'm sure everyone else who gets a new phone
does at first! the only problem i am having is wth the memory card,
i bought a 512mb one hoping to fill it with music etc but when i
try to move files from phone to card they simply disappear! I haven't
sussed whether it is a card problem or phone problem or simply a
user problem yet tho! apart from that it is a superb phone!

I've had the fone 5 days and can honestly say it is exactly what
I wanted. Had a D500 for the past year and the only 2 extra features
I wanted were a memory card slot and a 2 megapixel camera. Not too
sure how good the battery life is yet, got mine on Friday, charged
it up for half the day and it lasted til Monday night, but that
was with quite a lot of Bluetooth usage and playing of 3 - 4 min
MP3's. As regards to turning 3G off if you go to SETTINGS > CONNECTIVITY
> NETWORK > NETWORK MODE and then select GSM 900/1800 as opposed
to AUTOMATIC, that should do the trick! I would definately recommend
the Z400 as in my opinion its the best phone out there at the moment.

I took it back for that reason as it hardly lasted a day, and that's
without using it much. Very disappointed. It's ok having all these
gadgets on mobiles but the main reason I want it is to be able to
call people and take calls!! so what is the point if you have all

I was looking for a replacement for my Nokia 6320i as my contract
had come to an end. I had been pleased with the 6320i as it was
fairly bullet proof & did everything I needed. I read a number of
reviews on different phones & decided to order the Samsung D500
as it appeared to be reasonably reliable. Sadly, however, the operator
at O2 said that they had discontinued the D500 but recommended the
Z400i. As I was fairly indifferent about it all I agreed to give
it a go. The Samsung Z400 has impressed me & I have found the following
strengths & weaknesses. It’s strengths are… - Has more
functions than the Nokia 6320i - The camera is excellent (despite
only being 2MP) & there are two of them (front & rear)! - The slide
mechanism makes it easy to hold & use during calls but discrete
& small when idle - The screen size, definition & colour is amazing
& trounces the Nokia - The ring volume is much better & more ‘controllable’
than the Nokia - The phone alert combines ring & vibration - It
is easy to re-assign buttons & function - The in-call clarity is
fantastic, better than the Nokia, in my opinion - The battery life
is better than that of the Nokia, so I don’t know why everyone
is complaining! - Easily personalised & you can set your own wallpaper
with photo or imported images - Easy to import information, data
& images - Bluetooth appears to work nicely & I have had no problems
with connectivity It’s weaknesses are… - Common sense
gives an appreciation that it has many moving components for the
slide mechanism. As such the Z400 is more delicate & flimsy than
most fixed pad, mono-piece phones, so a little more care is required
(no throwing it on the back seat of the car or chucking it into
a bag or suitcase) - The screen is large & cannot be replaced if
damage, so again, care is required (unlike the Nokia where replacement
shells can be purchased) - The Z400 can be easily personalised,
although SOME of the features can ONLY be personalised with what
is provided by Samsung, rather than imported tones & images - I
was disappointed at the complexity of the synchronisation, it seems
a challenge & I don’t know if I’ll be using that function
a great deal - The phone memory is limited, but fortunately easy
to improve upon my adding a memory card - There is no flash, but
if you need a ‘decent camera with a flash’ day-to-day
then buy a ‘decent camera with a flash’ not a phone!
(although the Z400 performs very well in conditions with good lighting)
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised & feel that it provides a good
alternative to my 6320i. I would recommend this phone to careful
individuals who need a reliable phone with good call quality that
offers a good range of features & a reasonable degree of personalisation.
It has lots of toys to play with, but if you are a total gimmick-freak
& you want a ‘swiss-army knife’ phone then look elsewhere.

Sexy, sleek, my precious. I love that silver little pot of joy.
I've never dropped it, but my friend has, he says when he dropped
it, it was in OK condition. I love doing video calls with my O2
XDA Exec (PDA/Phone) which I gave to my brother, and then I like
also doing video calls with my friends who all 3G phones. 3G is
my favourite feature of this phone, allowing you to access the Internet
at fast speeds and also view Sky TV - not to mention do video calls.
The next feature is the Camera 2.0 Megapixel camera for nice shots
- stupid feature having the mirrior as you can take a photo with
the 3G video calling camera but still its there so its no damage.
The only damage done to this phone is that it has no flash/light
for photos, that really ticks me off. Next the slide design, my
friend mentioned above dropped his Z400 - which broke the slide
design and the two parts jammed so he is missing the 1,2,3 keys
sadly. The slide design is the main reason I got it. The next feature
STOP - THE - CLOCK from Vodafone, is super. When you go out of the
contract time you get 60 minutes for the price of 3. I think this
works within the contract time as well. Mobile TV is excellent,
watching TV for a while before bed rather than on my TV, but I've
stopped doing that now because I've got a new Samsung LCD SyncMaster940MW
another of my Samsung products along side my Samsung X11 laptop.
Well in all I love the phone it's sleek, sexy, stylish and the second
best phone I've ever had. Thanks for the third time Samsung!!!

Jui ... couldn't turn the keypad sounds off? There is a volume control
on the left hand side of the phone. Press up or down to control
the tone volume. Yet another case of the problem being a dozy user
instead of the actual phone. I've had this phone a fortnight now,
since upgrading from my Motorola ROKR E1 which went for a swim.
Yes the battery life isn't as good as it could be, so what - I take
my data cable with me to work and just plug it in at the PC - yes,
it charges from the USB port. The camera quality is absolutely outstanding
for a mobile phone. If you want to see some proof, look at the (resized)
photos in my gallery at www.swoo.co.uk - the high quality images
are from the Z400 - the lower quality ones are from the Motorola
ROKR. Quite a difference. I think people are forgetting that this
phone is marketed as more of a 'business' device than a "omg i have
a crazy frog ringtone" retard device. The bundled software is fantastic
- the phone syncronises contacts/tasks/meetings/etc PERFECTLY with
Microsoft Outlook, and supports SyncML which means you can import
your GMail calendar with a bit of tinkering (and exporting to iCal
format first). I liked my ROKR before it died, and was a bit disheartened
to be getting a new phone. But the Samsung has totally blown me
away and I can't recommend it enough. One last point - with regard
to the reception... i work in the middle of the countryside, and
have no problems whatsoever with this phone. The worst i've had
is 2 of 4 bars and the sound quality was absolutely fine.

Upgraded a week ago from a samsung E720, and so far i'm quite impressed,
although there are some major downfalls! As most people have said
the battery life is terrible!! I charged my fone for 12hrs on sunday
night(30th Jul)and its now 4pm tuesday (1st Aug) and the battery
has gone. With the e720 the battery life was twice as long, whether
this is due to the z400 having more features such as games (sonic
the hedgehog),two more powerful cameras and the mp3 capability i
do not know. So i'm not too impressed with that. Also, as a person
who likes to personalise their phone not being able to choose an
mp3 for my message tone is frustrating, as is not bein able to chose
the menu colour has caused me to get annoyed. Sounds stupid but
surely if the e720 was able to change the menu colour then i would
have hoped the z400 would have this feature. Also, as others have
said the only downfall of the cameras is that there is no flash
which is really disappointing as the camera quality and screen is
brilliant. Night view is poor and produces poor picture quality.
Another thing which annoys me is the softwear packages given with
the phone are far from easy to use! i cannot send music to the phone,
which causes me to rely on friends bluetoothing music. Finally the
last bad thing about the phone is that it cannot support videos
recorded on the e720. Very annoying since i recorded many videos
from Ibiza Rocks, which now have to stay on the old phone. Other
than all these negatives, i really like the look of the phone, although
from other comments i am dreading the day i drop the phone as it
is silver and will show up any scratch. Also a micro SD memory card
was not included with my deal ( from orange) which is annoying as
prices i have been quoted are extremely high. Altogether a ok phone
which lacks some features from previous models but the camera quality
( except flash) is definatly the positive point of the phone

flash, was great. However I found it difficult to really personlise

I couldn't get the phone to show the time in standby mode which

I have had the Samsung Z400 for a week after upgrading from my Samsung
D600. I have to say there are features on this phone which make
me yearn for my D600 back! Top of the list is poor reception. Although
this is my first 3G phone, I live in an area with two 3G transmitters
both within 2 miles of my house, yet I still struggle with just
one to two bars. Even when my phone reverts to GSM the signal strength
is significantly lower than my D600 achieved. Another disappointing
feature is very poor ringtone quality. It does sound cheap and nasty.
A great let down after the D600. Software is also different. The
D600 had a facility enabling you to block unwanted text messages
from chosen numbers, this is not available on the Z400. Battery
life is awful. I am charging this phone every day as opposed to
twice a week with the D600. As regards to poor reception, I don't
know if the phone is the problem or whether 3G transmitters are
just not as efficient as GSM. Would like to know what others think.

Well, I upgraded from the excellent SE K750i to what I thought would
be the best handset on the market(or so the O2 rep told me). He
was nearly right!! Everything about the phone is really good including
the MP3 player, the screen quality, video calling(amazing)and software.
However there are a couple of big details that may make you think
twice. You can only use the limited amount of polyphonic tones for
message alerts and alarm signals(No MP3 capability for some reason).
This was not a major gripe but the battery life is. Having the handset
for only a week I have charged it up three times already and I have
hardley used the handset at all apart from the initial "new toy"
setting up at the start. Apparently I have a defective battery but
after reading the other reviews, I think not!!!!. My K750i would
last longer than a week with alot of usage. If you want a sleak,
stylish phone that has video calling but have to charge it up every
second day(very annoying when you have to carry your charger with
you everywhere just incase) then this phone is for you. If not then

quality. After just 4 days the slide has stopped working correctly
and now it doesn't end the calls. The battery will last just 2-3

Installed the bundled PC Studio software to find that it dosent

of that exactly? Couldnt test video calling as no one else I know
owns a 3g handset at the moment. Another thing that cheesed me off

This phone is great. It has an amazing 2 megapixel camera which
means that pictures look great on both the phone screen and on a
computer. It is really simple to use. I was a Nokia fan before this
but after only a few days use, im now totally won over. I had no
trouble getting used to the menu and other settings. I have had
no problems with the sounds (actual calls and ringtones etc). Everything
sounds crystal clear to me. I highly reccomend you buy this phone!

Great little phone, does feel a bit plastic so dont know how it
will wear and I wouldnt like to drop it very often!. Ringtone speaker
is not very good quality so music distorts at high volume. Screen
quality is fantastic, the best Ive ever seen on any phone and is
1000% better than my previous SE K750. Not very big memory so I
got a 1gig memory card which should be more than enough for most
people. Menu system is so easy to navigate as Ive not used Samsung
before and found my way round in 5 mins without ever looking at
the manual. Overall I would highly recomend this phone especially
in Mirror silver which looks the biz.

First timer. Had this phone now for 3 days Via Upgrade. Had 3 Samsungs
previous to this and very impressed with them. The Z400 Hmmmm. It
looks really good, Feels really good but think it could have been
better. 2 Megapixel Camera is stunning. Video Camera is good. 30
MB of on board memory but does have slot for upgrade. Easy to navigate
like all other Samsung First time i have had 3G so cannot comment
on it but i saw wor lass today whilst at work. Is that a good thing
:) i'll let you decide. Loverly silver casing (Although there is
a black one aswell) Bigger screen than the D500 Downside. Not as
loud as D500. Speaker phone not as good as D500 (I could hear this
one whilst driving. No way with the Z400) Not many tones to chhose
from and as yet i have not found a way to change the theme. This
might be done with the CD & computer. Not sure yets. Battery life.
3 days and nearly dead.!! Although it has been played with quite
a bit. Not listened to any MP3's yet. The wife and i couldn't choose
between the E900 and D600 so we risked it. Thinking i should have
gone for the E900 now. Don't be put off by my review though as as
i see it i think the phone might be marketed to the business side
and not a games/Music machine. Regards Jed
