Samsung
X830 Review
Phone
rating:
The Samsung X830 (or the Samsung Blush as the pink
version has been nicknamed) is a tiny music player phone with a
rotating design. There's no doubt that this is a very trendy, cool-looking
phone that is packed with features and is a real head turner. Available
in black, white, pink and orange, the X830 is one of the smallest
and lightest phones ever. When closed, all you can see is the screen
and the click wheel used for navigation and controlling the music
player. Swivel the phone open, and you can make calls and have access
to a full keypad.
Now
it has to be said that rotating design phones are not new, and have
a sad history. Motorola introduced the V70 and V80
rotating phones a few years back. They were cool-looking phones
and seemed good on paper, but were notoriously unreliable and difficult
to use. Sony Ericsson's S700i
was more successful, with a better design, proving that rotating
phones can work if they are designed well. The benefits of the rotating
design are that, like a slide phone, you can make a very compact
phone with a large screen, and Samsung have really made the most
of this with the X830 - it's a tiny phone! The X830 concept does
work in fact, thanks to the introduction of the click wheel navigation.
This makes it possible to access most of the phone's functions very
easily without having to open the phone, and so the device becomes
a very small music player/camera/organiser. The problems start when
you open the phone to make a call. Because the X830 is so narrow,
the keypad is arranged with a strange layout, with keys in unfamiliar
places. With a bit of practice you can get used to this, but the
other problem is that the phone becomes very long and thin when
fully opened and is cumbersome to hold. This is the price you pay
for having such a tiny & trendy phone!
Moving on to the functionality of the phone, we
are impressed. Samsung have packed a lot of features into the X830.
The main feature of the X830 is the music player. This is a high
quality player that supports all of the popular formats including
MP3, WMA and AAC. The click wheel and user interface make the player
very easy to use. Audio quality is high with 3D surround sound and
support for a stereo Bluetooth headset. Amazingly Samsung have packed
in a whole Gigabyte of memory, giving plenty of space for storing
music without the need to buy a memory card. With fast USB 2.0 connectivity
and Bluetooth, putting music onto the phone is quick and straightforward.
Flight mode lets you use the music player with the phone offline.
The phone is also equipped with a 1.3 megapixel
camera with video recorder, a speakerphone, Java games, 64-voice
MP3 ringtones, fast internet access via EDGE and is triband. Battery
life is acceptable but not particularly high.
Buy this phone for style, for its tiny size and
for its great music player feature. Don't buy it if ease-of-use
is your top priority or if you take a lot of photos with your phone.
The X830 has now been replaced by the Samsung
F210, which is a much improved phone.
Features of the Samsung X830 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
- Video camera (MPEG4 format)
- Display: TFT, 262k colours, 128 x 220 pixels
- Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+ and WMA
formats)
- 3D surround sound
- MP3 ringtones / 64 voice polyphonic ringtones
- Speakerphone
- Voice memo recorder
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS
- Java games
- Personal organiser
- Caller ID (Text/Photo)
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10,
EDGE
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0
- Memory: 1 Gbyte flash memory
- Flight mode
- Triband
- Size: 84 x 30 x 20 mm
- Weight: 72g
- Talk time: 5 hours
- Battery standby: 230 hours

CANT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PHONE WITHOUT SAYING ABOUT THE MEMORY
FIRST, I HAVE 251 SONGS, 171 PICS AND 11 VIDEOS ON MINE AND ITS
STILL GOT SOME MORE MEMORY LEFT! THE LOOK OF THE PHONE IS BRILL,
I GET LOADS OF PEOPLE ASKING ME ABOUT IT, MOSTLY STRANGERS! I THOUGHT
THE UNUSUAL KEYPAD WOULD BE REALLY HARD TO USE BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS
I WAS COMPLETELY USED TO IT. IF I USE ANY OTHER PHONE NOW IT SEEMS
REALLY THICK AND ODD TO USE! THE MUSIC PLAYER IS GREAT, YOU CAN
MAKE PLAYLISTS, SCROLL THROUGH THE SONGS WHILE LISTENING TO THE
CURRENT SONG, THE WHEEL DESIGN MAKES IT LOOK MORE LIKE AN MP3 PLAYER
THAN A PHONE. THE FEW PROBLEMS I DO FIND WITH THE MUSIC PLAYER THO
IS IF I RECEIVE TXT WHILE ITS PLAYING THEN MOST OF THE TIME I DONT
REALISE AS THE VIBRATION ISNT VERY STRONG AND THERE IS NO SYMBOL
TO SAY A TXT HAS BEEN RECIEVED. OTHER PROBLEMS I FIND WITH THE PHONE
IS THAT THE RINGING TONE ISNT VERY LOUD AND I VERY OFTEN MISS CALLS.
THE SCREEN IS A LITTLE ON THE SMALL SIDE AND THE PICURE S DONT LOOK
OF THE GREATEST QUALITY ON THE SRCEEN BUT WHEN PUT ONTO MY PC THEY
ARE AS GOOD AS ANY PHONE. I TEND TO LINK MY PHONE TO MY PC THROUGH
MY BLUETOOTH DEVICE ALTHOUGH I DID HAVE A FEW PROBLEMS WITH SENDING
PICTURES FROM MY FONE TO PC WITH THIS ALTHOUGH WHEN I USED THE USB
PORT PROVIDED THERE WAS NO PROB. TALKING OF PHOTO'S IT WOULD BE
LOVELY IF THERE WAS A FLASH ON IT AS IT MEANS YOU NEED TO BE SOMEWHERE
WELL LIT TO TAKE A PIC! THE GAMES ARENT GREAT BUT I DONT PLAY THEM
SO THATS NO LOSS FOR ME. I FIND I SOMETIMES HAVE ERRORS SENDING
ONE TXT TO A LOT OF PEOPLE WHICH CAN BE ANNOYING. BATTERY LIFE IS
GOOD, NOT EXCELLENT BUT ALOT BETTER THAN SOME PHONES IVE HAD. I
LOVE THE ATTACHMENT FOR THE HANDSFREE AS IT MEANS I CAN LINK IT
TO MY MP3 PLAYER SPEAKERS WHICH MAKES IT VERY LOUD! OVERALL IF YOU
WANT A PHONE PACKED WITH FEATURES, TAKE LOADS OF PIC'S AND PLAY
GAMES THEN I WOULDNT RECOMEND THIS PHONE. H0WEVER IF YOU LIKE AN
UNUSUAL PHONE THATS A TALKING POINT AND LOVE MUSIC ON YOU PHONE
THEN GET THIS! ITS FAR FROM THE WORSE PHONE YOU COULD GET! I DONT
REGRET BUYING IT!

I have had a samsung x83o Blush for about 2 months now and already
by downloading the songs and type of music that i like from orange
it has started to say that the file is unsupported when two days
earlier it was playing fine and phoned orange and they said that
there was a fault with the download when there clearly wasnt and
then just 3 days ago the left button under the swivle has stopped
clicking so i wouldnt rate this phone very well if you want to buy
this phone i wouldnt recommend haveing it for more than two months
and i have to have this for another 15 months also i have asked
a couple of other people what they thought of the phones and they
said that the music player was giving them unsuppoorted files and
that the left clicker under the swivle had stopped working so there
is most definatly a fault with the phones. I have to admit though
i do love the phone its just really rubbish i had to buy an ipod
because it waasnt working properly and when its in your pocket or
bag it opens itself up i almost cracked the screen because of it.
but overall onli get it if you already have a digital camera and
an ipod or mp3

well, what a mixed bag of comments! Most people are taking it to
the extreme though. I always tell it as it is so here goes. I think
the phone is absolutely fabulous looking! It takes a while to get
used to because of the whole 2 row button thing, but doesn't every
phone take a while to get used to? the memory space is really good
and its quick and easy to add songs to it. I have to say that the
volume is a bit disappointing but most people play their music full
blast which wrecks your ears so I suppose there's an upside to the
low volume. This phone is a flashy, tiny, modern, cute, gorgeous,
music player phone and if that's what you're looking for then this
is the phone for you! Just remember to take time to get used to
it!! Give it a chance!!

Loving the Blush. small and stylish. loads of people comment on
it. it's soooo pretty! has taken some time to get used to the position
of the keys, indeed if i want to send a text quickly i have to do
it off my other phone, that siad i am getting used to it... slowly!
I am not convinced about the "click wheel", maybe its because i
have had to back space soooo many times when texting to correct
errors but the buttons to go left and down seem to be jammed even
though the phone is what...about 20days old.. if that.. the wheel
function is fine just the button part of it is playing up. In all
honesty I don't really rate the music player either..but then I
didn't get it for that. It has less features than my old samsung
(think it was the E530) which had email, but again.. i didn't get
this phone for that.. I got it purely based on its looks.. and I
am more than happy with it for that reason. (5 stars for looks)

the phone looks stylish but the usability is beyond belief. Here
are the faults u should be aware of: > the screen is one of the
smallest screens i have seen on a phone for a long time and gave
me a headache after using it for more than 10 mins. > the 2 button
row takes A LOT of getting used to. > the phone has no flash > the
only thing you can do when the phone is 'shut' is play music...no
other menu's available >very quiet ringtones and you can only have
samsungs set tones as a message tone > user interface very basic
> when shut the screen is upside down when someone rings you BUT...if
your after a phone just for the looks and NOTHING else then choose
this one!!

I was in the market for a new phone and was torn between this and
a sony phone of the same price, I weight it up, as I do like to
take photos and listen to music... so Sony probally would have been
a better choice, but I carry enough gizmos and gadgets with me so
my main priority was to make calls. With a generous 1GB memory I
have a good selection of songs for the walk to work and nice photos
of hi-jinx that e and freinds get up to, even some great videos
with room to spare... I dont have a mojor beef with the phone, but
the only thing I though would have been cool are some games that
make use of the navigator button. That and a vibrating call feature
would have been nice (if there is one I can't find it) Another reason
that I went Samsung is that my missus has one and there is signal
everywhere, anywhere, with top notch sound quality. I could have
gone for a slim D900 or whatnot, but I have a tendancy to break
delicate things and whilst this phone is not invinciable, it's chunky
enough for me not to be scared of it. All in all a fanstatic PHONE.
I know you can get all singing all dancing things, but lets face
it, if it get nicked or broken, your big toy and all the stuff you
have on it is gone. And like I said I have a Pretty good digital
camera and a iBook I take every where with me anyways. (Yes I also
party got this in white becuase it matches my mac) Brilliant device!

apart from that, i have to say it is a piece of trash! The centre
wheel is made of tissue paper, texting is difficult, and i'm a textaholic,
the MP3 is good if you could actually here the songs without having
to put in the highly uncomfortable earphones, the camera would be
great if it didn't take the photo hours after pressing the button
and when you do finally get what you think is a half decent photo
you can't see it on the screen, as its tiny, then on top of evrything
else you can't take it anywhere, as it's constantly on charge, which

is easy to navigate and was surprised how simple it was to transfer
music from the pc. Both music and call quality are great and battery
lasts 2days on couple hours of usage per day and that's good enough

Fantastic phone.. now those wanting a phone packed full of gadgets
and what not, its not for you. Its a compact MP3 playing phone with
a half decent camera. You have one of these sitting next to your
plate in a fancy restaurant and your gonna get people wondering
what phone that is! Its so tiny, light and futuristic in design.
it has a great talk time period, and will last days on standby.
I have the white one, looks very much like an extended line of the
iPods. Nice one Samsung! You won't get many complaints about this

so my partner and I can share the music stored in the phones huge

I love this phone! The call sound quality is the best I've ever
had, and texting is easy once you get used to it. I was aware the
keys were set out in 2 columns when I bought the phone, so moaning
about it afterwards is silly! It's easier to get used to the key
layout than it is to understand the, ahem, 'grammar' in some of
the reviews on this page! The music player is great, with good sound
quality, and up to now my phone has 140 tracks with barely a dent
in the memory. The camera takes really clear pictures, and the bluetooth
function is problem-free. I've no idea why so many have had problems
with broken keys, click wheel, or short battery life, as mine has
been fine on all counts. I guess it's not for you if you're really
heavy handed, but why pay so much for something if you're going
to throw it around? With normal use the battery needs charging only
every 4 days or so, but using the music player a lot shortens it's
life. That should be expected, and not treated as something to complain
about. All in all, I've found this to be a brilliant little phone
and wouldn't swap it for my partners N73, or my sons' W810. Top
marks!!!!

THE PHONE IS BUILT FOR DESIGN!! thats top priority, U just cant
say negatives things about this phone, i.e Keypad, if u dont like

Bought this phone for my missus for xmas and I must say if you buy
the Pink "Blush" version from Orange you will discover its the perfect
accessory for your lady.Relatively easy to use (If a little unusual
at first) But it soon becomes second nature. The features are first
class, with intuative menus and a decent specification list including
a good camera and excellant mp3 player. The only real concern is
the ringtones which are EXTREMELY quiet, easily missed calls when
in a crowded/noisy place. Also more frustratingly is the message
alerts which only the preset sounds can be used and not any mp3's
or downloaded sounds, all of which can barely be heard because they
consist of pathetic "plinky plinky plinks". But apart from that,
the ladies will like it. Chaps you will have to buy the black one.Cheeeoooo

I got this phone in december, the battery life isnt that bad, it
depends on how often you use it. Obviously if you're using it to
listen to alot of music then its going to run out quickly. I receive
alot of attention from many people on how great it looks. I found
it hard at first to get used to the smallness of the keypad but
like anything, i adjusted to it! only took me a few days. I dont
understand why people're saying it will break because ive had no
problems with mine. The 1gb memory is great and the pictures are
really clear. An mp3 player, camera and phone rolled into one, definately
great for the money. oh and you can look at your pictures.. you
just zoom in by using the buttons at the side of the phone. Ive
also found ringing people not a problem at all. oh and to everyone
saying the ringtones etc arent loud enough, what is that about?
you can change the volume..and it comes with headphones. One problem
i have with the phone however is that the click wheel shows nail
marks easily, especially since mine is in white.

I bought this phone a few weeks ago and really, it's not worth anything.
Very stylish and hip but it's not worth the money. So many faults
with this phone: 1) A phone that is also an MP3 player, it's supposed
to be loud. The tones are not loud at all. 2) The screen is so small.
I find it hard to see as the phone is all pushed together like an
iPod. 3) The buttons are way too small. Too bad if you have big
fingers!!!! 4) The camera quality is poor. 5) The disk in the middle
of the phone is a peice of rubbish. It is always wobbly and is probably
on the verge of coming off. 6) Texting people on this phone is a
NIGHTMARE! It's so difficult! Do not get this phone if you are a
TXT MANIAC...like me =P 7) The numbers going down in twos. What's
up with that? I know the phone is supposed to be and look cool but
really, it's so difficult to get used to when ALL NORMAL phones
are in threes! I would save yourself the STUPID amount of money
this phone costs, and buy a Nokia or Sony Ericsson. They are MUCH
better!

Great little phone. I had a Sony Ericsson W810i and couldn't wait
to get rid of it for something that actually worked. Unlike the
Sony the Samsung actually works as a phone, you can hear what people
are saying and it doesn't lock up when you want to make a call.
It is awkward to get used to but if you don't have the capacity
to adapt then maybe you shouldn't be using technology as advanced
as a mobile phone. If you want a phone that actually works, plays
mp3's and has a camera for occasional use but don't like the bulky
size of the competition then this could be the phone for you.

Fantastic phone, would have been acceptable without a camera but
they have put one in there which is a bonus which makes it even
better. Initially it is difficult to use but like all phones you
get used to it. The 1Gb memory is a massive amount compared to its
competitors of similar price, making it a top quality MP3 player.
The sound quality throught the headphones is is one of the best
around and the scroll wheel not only looks good but is useful for
navigation. Do not buy if you have big fat clumsy thumbs as everything
about this phone is small and needs a little extra patience. Only
problems with this phone, is the loudspeaker, but again this is
due to the size of the phone (which I wouldnt sacrifice for a better
loudspeaker). Considering it's size you cannot expect all the bells
and whistles that the Samsung E900 has, but for the price and the
stylish look, this phone is worth every penny. One thing I have
noticed with my white model is that guys surpirsingly dont like
it, most still preffering the boring candy bar shapes (wheres the
innovation) but girls love it, however I wouldnt say this is a girls
phone, despite Samsung targeting them with the rather tacky looking
pink "blush" model.
