Samsung
X820 Review
Phone
rating:
The
Samsung X820 is one of Samsung's Ultra series of superslim
phones, and at just 7mm thick it's the thinnest of the Ultra series,
and the thinnest mobile in the world at launch! It's now been beaten
by its replacement - the Samsung U100.
The rise of the superslim mobile began with the
Motorola RAZR in 2004 at 14mm. Before
this most mobiles were at least 20mm thick, so the RAZR caused quite
a stir. The Motorola L6 replaced the
RAZR as the world's thinnest, at just 11mm, and for a while the
Samsung P300 was the thinnest, at
9mm. Now comes the Samsung X820, pushing the limit even further
- to half the thickness of the RAZR! All this in just two years!
The RAZR was hugely popular; the L6 quite popular, although with
too low a specification to be a big seller; the P300 was just too
weird to be mainstream; but the X820 has got what it takes to be
a really popular phone. It does compete with the other Ultra phones
however, especially the sliding Samsung
D900.
Despite being so thin, the X820 feels solid enough
(the casing is actually slightly flexible - this stops the ultra-thin
plastic from breaking) and is nice to hold. Several of our users
report that their X820's have snapped in half in their back pockets,
although we find this hard to believe from what we have seen of
the phone - it will take a lot of abuse before snapping! The keypad
is large and very easy to use, and the overall styling is very nice.
It's worth noting that as well as being the world's thinnest phone,
it's also the lightest. This is due to its small volume and the
use of plastic instead of metal in the casing. It feels as light
as a feather!
Now, not only have Samsung created the world's
thinnest phone, but what's equally amazing is the specification
of the phone. How on earth have Samsung managed to pack so much
into the virtually non-existent space inside the X820? First up,
there's a 2 megapixel camera. Whilst this can't compete with the
top of the range phones from Sony Ericsson or the Nokia Nseries
smartphones, it's still a good camera for a phone and takes excellent
pictures. The video camera is also excellent, with a high reolution
of 355 x 288 pixels. Images and videos are displayed very nicely
on the bright TFT display, which is large at 1.9 inches, handles
262k colours and is high resolution.
The X820 has a stereo MP3 player that supports
a wide range of formats and can handle playlists. Output is through
the speakerphone or a stereo headset. Memory is 80 Mbytes, which
is enough to store a couple of dozen MP3 tracks, but there's no
memory card option to expand the memory. High quality MP3 ringtones
are supported.
Connectivity options are good, with support for
Bluetooth (including a Bluetooth stereo headset), USB and a TV-Out
port so that you can view images or video directly on a TV. The
X820 supports MMS and email, with a Picsel viewer for viewing attachments.
GPRS and EDGE support enable fast downloads. An offline mode is
available for using the phone without making or receiving calls.
One small complaint, in common with many Samsung phones, is that
there's no option for the phone to vibrate and ring simultaneously.
Finally, battery life is no better than average, which is not surprising
when you consider the problem of fitting a battery into such a small
space.
Features of the Samsung X820 include:
- 2.0 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
- Video camera (355 x 288 pixels - up to one hour
duration)
- Display: 262,144 colours, 220 x 176 pixels (1.9
inches)
- Music Player (MP3/AMR/ACC/ACC+/e-AAC+ formats)
with stereo headset
- MP3 ringtones (64 voice polyphonic)
- Speakerphone
- Voice memo recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
(POP3 / SMTP / IMAP4)
- Document viewer (Microsoft Office & PDF
files)
- Java games
- Personal organiser functions
- Offline mode / Flight mode
- Memory: 80 Mbytes
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 1.1, TV-Out
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10,
EDGE
- Vibration alert
- Triband (900/1800/1900 MHz)
- Size: 113 x 50 x 6.9 mm
- Weight: 66g
- Talktime: 2.5 hours
- Battery standby: 260 hours

are simple to navigate, although a little more long winded than

can't tell what pocket I put it in. Good signal quality and decent
camera. Only reservations are the talk time, but thats a comprimise
because of it's size. Only annoying feature is that you cant use
custom message alerts, only the on phone melodies which are pretty

the system runs very quick, good signal quality and a pretty decent
camera as well. The one downside, which is annoying me a bit is
they haven't really thought about what keys do, and eveything seems
to take a lot more clicks than my old Nokia, which can get a bit
long winded. I keep hitting the back button as the delete and it

Mobile Network Orange. The Phone Looks great It feels great but
it has too highly irritating and highly annoying faults. Number
one the in call indicative tone which indicates connecting a call
and disconnecting a call is not at ear piece level but ring tone
level i.e. very loud. The other fault is the poor signal quality.
When i use my sim in my other Samsung it works perfectly but in
the x820 poor and then it disconnects at which point fault one kicks
in and an extremely loud bleep causes a ringing in your ear. I have
had the phone replaced as i believe both of these faults are software
related only to find that the same phone 4 months after the original
was obtained is exactly the same. I have spoken to Samsung which
got me absolutely no where. I would seriously consider other phone
options other than this one.

It gets great reception even indoors and the battery lasts at least
three days. I can even receive a call when the battery low warning
is flashing. That's like driving around all day with the fuel light
flashing. I have dropped it a few times and it didn't faze it. I
weigh at least 200 LBs and have never come close to snapping it
in half. I have whacked it on the desk to demonstrate to my friends
how tough it is. I know it's plastic, but it seems as tough as my
Nokia 8800 The only problem I have is that it's very hard to see
the screen outside in the daylight. It's possible, just very hard.
That's why it doesn't get 5 stars. I doubt anybody will come up
with a color screen that can be used outdoors, but I had an LG that
was almost veiwable outside if I changed the wallpaper to white
and the lettering to black. One feature I could do without is the
camera. I can't have a phone with a camera at work, so I wish I
could get the same phone without a camera. I don't write text messaging,
but receive them all the time and the memory seems to be very large
for messages. When I put my sim in my Nokia 8890 for work (no camera),
it says I have no memory left for messages. I would absolutely love
the X820 and give it six stars if it had a monochrome display and
no camera.

On the surface a nice phone, very fashionable has all the girlies
wanting to play with it. Light, too light sometimes, reasonably
durable and nice display. But when you start using it the bugs really
come to the fore. Some are probably comedown from being a hardcore
smartphone user. I miss the functionality of my bricks I suppose.
The messaging is alright but a bit fiddly at times, the OS is slow
for something that should be a basic phone. The predictive text
was off with two days because its nonsense. Stupid things annoy
me. First it won't let me have my phone on ring tone and vibrate
at the same time. It has to vibrate first and then ring. Which leads
to missed phone calls. The ring tone goes awol on the first ring
then suddenly rises to full whack - this is despite setting it at
one level. Te connectivity with the PC isn't much to write home
about either and I've given up trying to get my secretary trying
to synch outlook with it so i dont have to mess about myself. Myt
advice is use it as I do. Lovely party/going out/ travelling phone.
Put it in your pocket for a weekend (not your back you'll crush
it) or on the long traels where a slim phone leave room in your
pocket for wallet and stuff with worrying about customs. Otherwise
- for business get a smartphone and you'll be much better off.

user friendly (although its predictive text sometimes annoys me).
The camera is great and the battery life isn't as bad as some people
make out. BUT, it's true that it snaps. I had mine in my back pocket
one night and sat down. The next time I look at it, the screen is
totally banjaxed. Vodafone eventually gave me a new one but it was
a battle to get them to do that. My advice would be, get this phone
but don't get it on an 18 month contract. The chances are, it'll
break within 18 months and your phone insurance won't cover a replacement
as most suppliers see this as customer damage.

Contrary to popular belief, this phone does not snap in half. In
fact, it's very solid and feels much sturdier in the hand than any
nokia or sony ericsson phone which lately all seem to be made of
cheap plastic. For those that didn't know, samsung's ultra phones
are made of fibre-glass infused plastic with magnesium coating.
The only thing that's easy to break is the display so be careful
not to put it in your back pocket and then sit on it. Other than
that, this phone is a technological marvel and has everything you
need except for expandable memory but i still give it 5 start cos

Looks are good and it is light and thin. If that's all you want
then fine. You need both hands to text (especially if you are right
handed) since the "space" key is in the bottom right(#) and very
close to the edge, so you will drop the phone unless you have two
thumbs. Most menus seem to have never gone through any user friendliness
testing. Every function requires more key presses than any other
phone i have ever used. the central smart keys are too small and
you need to use your nails. The charging socket needs a cover to
be removed before a charge can be plugged in so you need to carry
a safety pin all the time. Can't connect a chareger and a wire (headset
or download cable) at the same time. In addition to the above it
is not easy to simply select mutiple recipients for a text message.
Each one has to be selected one by one by going through to the whole
"add recipient", "from-phonebook", "select", keys each time, instead
of just going through a list of the phonebook and ticking the ones
that you want to send to. Real pain in the neck. Also trying to
edit an exist recipient causes the text to be sent, half done! For
someone who cares mostly about basic communication functions (voice
and text) being user friendy and reliable ie a business phone: forget
it and go for a simple Nokia.

Firstly you want this phone because it's thin... don't expect anything
else fancy, expect some sacrifices for a first generation phone
this slim. The Bad - 1) Main Bad Point - Speaker not as loud as
regular sized phones. If you are often in noisy locations and HAVE
to hear your phone, don't rely on the X820, and don't expect to
vibration to alert you either, in the coin pocket of me jeans, i
struggle to feel it. 2) Battery - To be honest after reading reviews
i expected something awful, but in fact it's not bad considering
the battery size, you can have it in standy for a good 2-3 days,
I've got a solid 3hrs of talktime in a full charge. But compared
to bigger phones the battery isn't good (obviously). A power mobile
user should not rely on this phone. 3) Reception - it's good but
not perfect, don't buy if you regularaly have important calls. GOOD
Points - 1) Slim! Slim! Slim! you need a slim phone look no further..
i have no complaints whatsoever about the size, its' very comfortable
to hold and use, you can manage one handed operation, although occasionaly
you might need two, it feels solid, light, and is the form factor
of a phone i've been long waiting for. Some people initially think
it's a toy, they don't believe its a phone. 2) Screen - Very clear,
and very easy to read from, all phones should have Widescreen display
like this. Overall - if you have a small purse, are wearing tight
fitting clothes, or wearing a suit, and just need a phone with you
for the night then this is perfect choice, it would be an excellent
2nd use phone. Personally i'm not a power user, i'm rarely in a
situation where i need to answer the phone desperately, if i can't
hear it, its usually for a reason. But at least i can carry this
phone on me 24/7, i used to avoid carrying my old D500 due to the
bulk. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but prepare for some sacrifices with the
size.

Am using this phone for the past 3 weeks and am in love with it.
The phone is excellant overall. Before buying this phone, I had
a very different notion about Samsung. After buying and using it
for the last 3 weeks, my regard for Samsung has grown up. They have
packed so much good things in a small phone and all those work seamlessly.
The voice clarity is very very good (when compared to my old Nokia),
the display is ultimate (I don't see any phone come even nearby
inclucing Sony Ericsson and Nokia N series), the music player is
again applaudable. The lower side is the less (?) in-built memory
and no expansion capabilities, besides the battery life, which I
feel OK as I used to charge on regular basis every other day. However
a spare battery is also available, which is again thin and hence
you shall carry it in your pocket. The camera is good, but would
had been happy if it had a flash and auto focus. It comes with a
TV cable, which is a welcome accessory as I can view the video's
captured in the large screen.

which is 1 day or slightly more than a day, with regular use. But
they threw in an extra battery with a sleek travel charger (the
battery goes into a sleeve and plugs directly into the charger).
All in all, it is designed for its functions (camera, mp3 etc) to
be use SPARINGLY due to small storage space and small battery life.

and light. the battery life is fine considering the size of it,
if you use it as a phone about 3-4 days, and its never switched
off. if you want an mp3 player or a camera this is not the phone
for you, but i normally just text and phone. would have been nice
to be supplied with a cable and software to be able to connect to
a pc without bluetooth, but other than that i'd recommend this phone
to anyone

I have recently purchased this phone and I'm very happy with it,
Obviously it's best feature is how slim & light it is, it was also
a good price, £150 from Carphone Warehouse on Orange PAYT. I do
have a few complaints about the phone... Like all other Samsung's
you have to mess on with a pincode before sending files via Bluetooth
which i think is a waste of time. Also it's not possible to use
your own ringtone for text message alerts, this wouldn't bother
me if the ones pre loaded on the phone were decent! Considering
how thin it is, the speaker is very loud and the display bright
and colourful and you can customise the menu's too which is nice.
I would recommend this phone to anyone who is after a stylish phone
and not too hung up on features.

You really have to see this phone to believe how slim it really
is. Display is fantastic and the landscape mode is actually very
pleasant to use. The standout features of the phone are the camera
and video quality. The 2mp camera is much better than D600 and video
is high quality CIF (352x288) resolution in mp4 format. Only problem
is the memory (just 82mb) so if u use the camera and video a lot
you'll only have space for a few mp3 ringtones. It's possible to
fit a whole cd on it but u wont have much space for random snaps
and clips on a day out. Havent had any problems with reception and
sound quality is very good both on the phone and with bluetooth.
A top quality phone and a nice refreshing design from samsung.

and height of it. Expected it to be smaller in all dimensions. Don;t
like that you cannot set your own text alert tone but have to use
one of the 10 pre-defined tones. Battery life is not the best. Only
3-4 days which is bad when I compare to my last phone - Sony Ericsson

Great Deal, No one can beat Samsung when it comes to design. Functions
are competible with other brands. Technology is shrinking the size
of gadgets, and Samsung has does a wonderful job. Besides all good
points, obviously there are setbacks also. 1- Lack of "ring and
vibrate" at same time function. 2- Memory cannot be expanded. 3-
So light in size, that sometimes can forget the the keeping. 4-
Lack of screen saver function. 5- Does not come with TV out cable.
6- Samsung could have provided a suitable leather case in accessories.
Above all phone is alright, will write again if found any problem

My first phone was Nokia 6110 and I stayed with Nokia ever since.
I also used Motorola, LG and Siemens phones as well as PDA phones
temporarily along the way. A few months ago, I couldn't resist the
features and workmanship quality of Samsung SGH-X700 when compared
with Nokia 6230 which is the competitor (the Nokia felt so cheap!).
I was quite satisfied with the Samsung. Finally, a few days ago,
I bought the SGH-X820 which is the ultimate choice for functionality,
quality and innovative design. Composite material case makes it
durable too. To make the story short: "Resistance is futile! Go

Just bought mine today. The thin and ultra light body feels like
you still need to fit a battery. First impression is a joke... Reading
the comments below, I feel lucky because the phone comes with PC
Studio software CD, USB cable, and earphones in Turkey. The price
is about £250 (VAT incl.) though. I knew it had a short battery
life before buying, I won't whine about that. The worst drawback
of having a so thin phone is, you can't grab it from your desk easily
after all those bricks you've used for years. If you like to roll
your phone in your palm, just forget it, you can't do that with
a cardboard. Navigation key would be a challenge for chubby fingers.
Interface is very user friendly, so is the PC suit. Never used a
Samsung before, the charger/USB/earphones socket is another challenge.
C (clear) key is positioned awkward for me, a pre Nokia and SE user.
Gotta get used to. The phone has a single speaker for both communicating
and ringing. Makes reasonable sound, especially with midi files.
Screen saturation and contrast is sexy, any other brand hardly beats
X820s picture quality. My cousin bought a N73 the same day, now
feels bad after seeing the cool Media Player on Samsung, compared
to Nokia's crappy player interface. X820 even fits your wallet,
and yes, people mistake it for a calculator ^^. Cheers...

1)There is no multiple phone book entry 2)vibrator and ring cannot

ring 3)The font is also small specially when the calls come in.
If anyone know how to change of font of incoming call then let me

I have had the phone for day now, and i was previously a big nokia
fan. That is until i bought my nokia 6680, which although a great
business phone, is a bit on the slow side (!!). The toleration of
faults became too much and i defected to samsung. The look and feel
of the phone is great, although the strange landscape screen is
taking some getting used to. The phones features is a case of "does
what it says on the tin", although returning to the menu always
highlights the last icon you were accessing. The instruction blooklet
is a bit of a joke, and only due to my previous experience with
the bluetooth etc... have i got the phone to operate as expected.
I still can't believe there is no CD software supplied to load onto
the PC, but i managed to move files to and from the phone using
bluetooth with basic XP functions. I have downloaded the PC suite
which should make it easier..(i hope). The phone lock and vibration
buttons are nearly the same as nokia's which is good for me, (Scott,
press and hold the hash key to turn on/off silent mode). Also the
directional keys can be programmed as shortcuts for applications
which is another plus. All said, the phone is pretty good, not something
to rant and rave about, but a neat phone that can be kept in a pocket
without feeling the weight, (although i might be worried about snapping
it in half if left forgotten in the back pocket). I give it 4 stars,
due to alot of functions being hidden deep in the menus, but the
shortcut keys helps...

Recieved the phone today, and I like the compact neat styling especially
the silver model. But shock horror I seem to have discovered two
glaring deficiencies. 1/ The internet browser button is right in
the middle of the keypad and I think it could easily be accidentally
triggered (ie while in a pocket), running up huge bills while you
are unaware. 2/ There doesnt seem to be any facility to upload pics
and videos to your computer- maybe it can be done with bluetooth
but thats not much good if your laptop doesnt have bluetooth. Theres
no mention of uploading in the booklet. Im sending it back if you
cant upload. Camera and vid can be one touch operated from a button
on the side which is neat. But I have not been able to get the email

is paper too expensive these days? Will write more when I find out
more.

the only shortcomings to this set. The screen is glorious, the features
border on the Smartphone, the keypad is excellent, the fit and finish
are beyond reproach. You can spend days just marveling at the amount
of technology that went into this phone: for example, there is a
SINGLE slot for the recharger, USB cable and headset. Yes, a just
one slot. The camera is great with fast processing. You even get
an image editor and a host of other applications. The price of this
phone is perfect, looking at the features. Factor in the small matter
of being the world's thinnest phone, and it practically becomes
a steal. Go and get it now - you will have a fun ride even if you
