Samsung X660 Review

Phone rating:

The Samsung X660 updates the X640 with some improved features. The X660 is an attractive clamshell with dual screens: the main display being of average quality and the outer display being relatively poor, not even colour. The camera is VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels) with a video option and is at best average. The phone supports MP3 ringtones, although there is no music player, and with only 8 Mbytes of memory there isn't really enough memory to store much anyway. Battery life is average and connectivity is via USB and infra-red with no Bluetooth option. The infra-red seems to be very unreliable, and no USB cable is supplied with the phone, making connectivity rather limited.

Whereas the X640 was a budget phone that offered limited features but excellent value for money, the X660 is a more of a mid-priced phone, and for the price there are frankly much better phones available. You might like to consider the Motorola V360, Samsung E370 or Sony Ericsson K310i as alternatives.

Features of the Samsung X660 include:

  • VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Internal display: TFT LCD 128 x 160 pixels, 65,536 colours
  • External display: LCD 96 x 96 pixels / 4 greyscale
  • Speakerphone
  • 40-voice polyphonic ringtones (MP3/AAC ringtones)
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS
  • Games : Bobby Carrot, Airship Racing, plus downloadable Java games
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
  • Memory: 8 Mbytes
  • Connectivity: USB, infra-red
  • Phonebook (500 entries) & personal organiser functions
  • Caller ID with image
  • Triband
  • Size: 90 x 45 x 22 mm
  • Weight: 78g
  • Talktime: 3.5 hours
  • Battery standby: 200 hours

This was my first phone and it was good just to start off with but it misses out on some useful features. The phone's good if you just want to make, recieve calls and text. The camera is average and when recording videos it sometimes only lasts for a few seconds. The phone lacks Bluetooth and mp3 ringtones. The phone looks quite nice but there are a lot nicer phones around Overall, an ok phone is you like simplicity but for me personally, I am much happier with my Sony Ericsson K800i.

When the phone was out fresh & shiny, I thought it was a pretty cool one. I adored the colors, the relatively big memory, the fact that it hasn't freezed yet, etc. Here are the facts you might consider before buying one: Pro: -cheap -good cam (clear pics) -nice colors (especially the numbers that you dial) -base color can be changed -good design -videos might be placed at the background -good menu Contra: -the infra does hardly work (I think you can only pass on phonebook data via that) -it makes photos even if you don't want it to -it's very hard to find the way to upload Java games (I haven't succeeded yet, though there are a lot of interesting games out) -the ringtones become very boring after a while -the CD that you get along with the transfer cable (and its program) somehow does not work on my cool modern computer, only on that of my parents, which is old and hardly works. -video sucks That's it. According to its price, it's OK - or at least so do I think.

Poor camera, phone keeps capturing pictures while inside your pocket, poor keypad contacts after a few months. Besides, my phone asks for a phone lock code when i tried to de-install & install SIM but does not accept the phone lock code I have set for it, and as well as the Samsung default code (00000000). When i try to contact an authorized service center, I was told that I will have to pay an expensive service fee to correct the problem despite with phone's warranty. What a customer support!!!!

Well, i think this phone is a brilliant little contraption, and think that the people on here who think its no good are stupid. The phone does EXACTLY what the box SAYS it does. The infra red is only used for transferring contact details, which i dont use any way. And as for the Mp3 ringtones, they DO work, just they have to be 100kb or less in length, no use trying to put a full mp3 on it as it wont work, best thing ive found is to put your song in an audio editing program, pick the bit you want, and save it as an mp3 with a low bitrate, worked for me. Now as for all these people who say "it should have come with an mp3 player" or "the screen could have been bigger" or something similar, all i have to say is WHY DID YOU BUY THIS PHONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!?! research is the key here people!

I got this phone last year and i liked the style, as it looks unique and compact. It is also stylish with a lot of memory (compared to my other phone) and is small (which is a bonus!). The only down side is that, i have a problem with my infra red which does not seem to be working but apart from that, i am not bothered about not having an MP3 on there, as i have got an MP3 player anyway and the MP3 rinses out your battery. It's a good thing that this phone can receive MP3 ringtones. There are some phones out there that only has Polyphonic ringtones. Now which one is better? Overall i like the phone and i am happy with it's contents.

You have all failed to mention the fact that if you change the sound settings, then you can have super cool noises as your key tones. Also, I love the different colours you can have when you press the numbers while dialing. I didn't get a usb cable with the phone, and the infa red doesn't work - but I'm not too dissapointed, as I only just found out that you could have MP3s as ringtones anyway, and was doing fine with the ones on the phone. It does irritate me that there are no good sounds to have as an alarm. "Ring ring..." Isn't something I want to hear at 6am But yes, I love this phone. I just wish that I could have some way of having mp3 ringtones without having to go to too much effort.

I only wanted a cheapish phone that I could use in the States and for this it is OK. However, the camera cannot be switched off and when I put my mobile in the pocket of my jeans and bend over to pick something up the camera starts clicking away taking the inside of my pocket. Not very helpful. Also it is impossible to receive multiple texts. When my daughter sends a long text from the states I only ever receive the first part. If I ask her to re-send I still only get the first part of the message. There are obviously lots of the ends of my messages floating about in cyber space.

If you have functions you use regularly change your long key press shortcuts, I can get to my messages with one press. I use it to send between 600 and 1000 per month easily and having unchecked "indicative tones" send them with no tone. I agree the IR port is unstable but that's why for a tenner I got a USB cable and downloaded the Samsung Suite from the web so I can transfer data to and from my PC. As a phone it does everything i need it to and find it easy to use but the IR is the only reason I don't give it full marks

Things I like about this phone: - size. it's nice and neat and very light. - the physical design. it looks GREAT and it feels very well built and sturdy - the call quality, which is much better than my Sony W300i when using the same SIM. And that phone is twice the price. - it's CHEAP. i paid about £50 on PAYG. Things I dont like: - the menus are stupid. they've improved since the last Samsung i had, an A800, but it still takes too many button clicks to do something as simple as send a txt to someone you txt all the time. menu-menu-menu-menu... it feels like the people who design this dont have a clue what people do with their phones most often. - the camera button on the side. its turns on when you dont want it to. and you cant disable it. AND you cant program one of the quick menu shortcuts to be the camera. stupid design. - the sounds. it makes noises you cant turn off. like when you send a txt, it makes a silly noise to say its sent, and you CANT disable it. the only way is to put the whole phone in quiet mode, which means it doesnt ring. i hate phones that make stupid noises all the time. i'm not 10, i dont need a toy. - the IR port. unreliable. transferring addresses via ir, for instance, you only get about a 60% success rate. the rest of the time the phone freaks out or the send just fails. basically the IR port is rubbish. the lack of bluetooth makes this doubly irritating. in summary it does the basics okay. and looks great. if looks dont matter, and the small size is not something you care about, get something else; because the usability of this phone is not good, and it lacks a ton of features. i like it overall though, because small size and good looks matter to me. i'm shallow like that.

I got this as my second phone to have alongside my i-mate and am very pleased with it. It's small, light, menu is fast and even has a very descent calendar and most importantly: it makes calls!!

This phone has all the basic functionalities and also is good looking but still it’s missing some of the features MP3 player and bluethooth. If you are planning to buy this phone have a second thought.

Great little phone. Good set of features for the price and a top design. A bit annoyed by the fact that samsung still go to the trouble of including infrared but restrict it to phone to pc only. What's the point??

Ive had this phone about a week so cant review it fully yet. What i can say though is i have had no problems at all so far. The call quality is good, texting is easy, the menu is easy to navigate as long, as you have some kind of brain, and it looks great. If your not a social recluse or someone who expects a feature packed phone for £80, then you shoudlnt have a problem with this phone. To last moaner; If you rate this phone a 1 then at least say why!!

hi my niece has this phone and shes like ten so its isnt hard to use at all photos arent bad neither is the camera and the price isnt bad at all considering this is relatively a new samsung here by us it has java which she likes im personally looking for a more complex phone samsung z500(i know its receive bad reviews but i think its just as much ur usage of a phone that the dertermines how the phone operates then the actuall phone) but samsung isnt a bads manufacturer but im brand loyalist so im biased and it isnt that fragile because my 2 year old nephew plays with it and its still in perfect working condition no bluetooth however and limited video recording but all in all pretty nice phone ps its small and cute whats not to like about that

Just got this 2days ago and im very happy with it. I really like the minimalistic and sleek black design...very stylish:)) Menu is very easy to use and has the usual colourful samsung icons. Camera and video work well and they look good on the quality display. It's also got a very descent phonebook and loads of organiser applications. Would have been perfect if the outside display was colour and not b&w. I've also discovered that the infrared only works with samsung's own pc software and u cant send or receive pics from other phones. You cant have everything though and it's still a top value phone for the price.
