Samsung X640
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Samsung X640 is an entry-level camera phone. Samsung have shaved
a little off the price by not including an external display, which
is a bit of a shame, but if this doesn't put you off, then the rest
of the phone offers excellent value for money.
It's
a lightweight compact phone, physically very similar to the Samsung
X450, which also lacks an external display. In fact, the X640
is virtually identical to the X450, but with the addition of a VGA
camera, a handsfree speaker and Samsung's voice clarity technology
which first appeared in high-end phones like the Samsung
D500 and E720. The voice clarity
system monitors the background noise and the loudness of the voice
in order to make the phone call as clear as possible.
The
camera is a standard VGA camera as used on all Samsung's entry-level
and mid-range camera phones and does its job well. The UFB (Ultra
Fine & Bright) display is crystal clear and is better than average
for this class of phone. Samsung
have equipped the X640 with a generous 6.5 Mbytes of memory, which
is a good size for storing photos and Java games.
If
you can live with the absense of an external display, then the X640
offers value for money if you're looking for a cheap clamshell camera
phone. If you want the benefit of a dual screen, then we recommend
the Samsung E330 instead, although
the E330 is a dual-band phone.
Features
of the Samsung X640 include:
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital
zoom and night mode
- Internal display: UFB, 65,536 colours, 128 x
160 pixels (1.7 inches)
- 40-voice polyphonic ringtones
- Handsfree speaker
- Voice clarity
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS (learning T9)
- Photo caller ID
- Games: Snowball Fighter, Bubble Smile plus downloadable
Java games
- Phonebook (1,000 entries)
- Personal Information Management: calender, scheduler,
to do list, clock / worldtime, alarm (once/daily/weekly), currency
converter, calculator, memo book, stopwatch, countdown timer
- Memory: 6.5 Mbytes
- Connectivity: RS232 serial port (cable not supplied)
- WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
- Triband
- Vibration alert
- Size: 87 x 47 x23 mm
- Weight: 85g
- Talktime: 3.5 hours
- Battery standby: 220 hours

I got this phone 2 weeks ago, and to tell the truth i didnt quite
like it at the beggining. I found it too feminine looking and complicated.
but as the time passed i explored the phone and discovered the great
"hidden" features. now i really like it. especially since it is
a clam-shell mobile. i never had a clam-shell in my life and im
glad this is my first one. i had phones like sony-ericsson t290i
or philips 355, so this is the best fone i eva had. i felt better
when i saw other men having the same fone. too bad it lacks a mini

What a great mobile phone the Samsung X640 is! It has brilliant
reception and speaker phone. It also has a voice clarity setting.
The camera quality is pretty cool as well. It has a large screen
so you're not having to constantly squint at it to see what you're
doing. Ring tones aren't too bad either. As it has an internal aeriel
the design is neat. It looks good. A great phone, especially as

the ANYKEY ANSWER option, then select OFF. Also select the SIDE

and the caller ID only gives you a brief glimpse of who's calling.
The phone answers as soon as you open it giving you no chance to
ignore people you don't want to speak to! Apart from that it's great.
Battery lasts well, very clear sound, good organiser and alarm plus
a very handy voice recorder - great for memos. Oh yes and pretty

I was using the Nokia 6610 and had no complaints with it at all.
I brought the Samsung X640 primarily because I wanted to use a clam-shell
phone. I had been using candy bars all along. Nokia's clam shells
are lousy. The X640 is a sleek, oval shaped phone, the antenna-less
design makes it comfortable to hold or slip into one's pocket. The
battery performance is also pretty good. The phone could have been
thinner (when compared to the Motorola V3 Razr), but one cannot
complain too much about that for the price that one needs to pay
for the V3 Razr. The X640's camera is pretty decent. On the negative
side, it's sometimes difficult to open the clam shell especially
when you are driving. Opening the clam in a hurry also causes accidental
activation of the volume switch on the side of the phone causing
the volume increase/decrease screen to pop up. This is irritating.
When on speakerphone, the menu displays 'Normal' and it displays
"Spk on" when in the normal mode. This is a S/W bu g. Samsung could
have included the PC cable as a standard accesory. I am used to
connecting my mobile to my notebook PC using the Infra Red port
on my Nokia 6610 , I miss this feature on the X640. For folks who
want to know how to switch off the auto answer feature on opening
the clam, here's how you do it. Go to menu, select phone settings
and switch off the Active folder option. Overall the X640 is a decent
phone provding value for money.

No external display but hey how hard is it to open to see who is

and photos far better than previous phone (motorolla v600). Don't
care that no MP3 player - I have a separate one. Triband - excellent
as I need it for my work. No dratted ariel to get in the way so
looks sleek and feels good in the hand. Can hear it ring or vibrate

And the people that are complaining about the battery must not have
charged it up fully when they first got it. And i dont know why
they are complaining about the fact it doesnt have a screen on the
outside you knew it didnt before you bought it so stop complaining.
This is an excellent phone and if you cant see that then you either
need glasses or your head testing.!!!!!!

A great little phone! Small/compact, stylish and easy to use. I've
always had Samsung phones and they don't differ that much, just
get more technical. I've had it over a week now. I love the camera.
It's my first camera phone and i'm amazed at the quality. Only thing
i don't like is opening the phone. I don't have nails so have to
get a real grip of it and is hard to flip without knock the sidekeys,
but they can easily be deactivated! Don't think there is such think
as a perfect phone but i'd certainly recommend this one! Charlie

I bought this cell phone about 5 days ago and i can surely say i
am truly impressed. Its compact design coupled with its light weight
make a phone like no other. Apart from a few down falls i.e. the
lack of an external display, lack of interesting games, poor selection
of ring tones and a camera with a picture quality that leaves a
lot to be desired for, its a reliable and owesome cell phone with
a fantastic gprs feature. If you look beyond its pit fall and invest
in one you shall truly not be disappointed.

Yes my phone also needs to be charged up practically every day!
I'm taking back to where I bought it but I will exchange just the
battery... anyway I don't know anyone who bought this phone personaly
and so I don't know if it's a problem of the model or if my battery
is old. I bought a cable link and I downloaded the software... I
can download and upload photos and images. Anyway there is a limit
is the size file... both for sounds and images. I created some gifs
(animations) but a image cannot exceed 200 Kb. And yes... you cannot
use images uploaded by the cable or sent by a friend by MMS as a
ID caller. The most annoying thing for me is the battery! My battery
charges in just one hour but I have to charge it dialy or after
2 days. Happens the same with you?

I bought this phone 2 weeks ago. I was happy with it to start with.
Nice and compact, camera features are great. Easy to send texts
etc. However, I had to get Vodafone to help me configure the WAP/GPRS
bit manually FOUR TIMES, as it wouldn't do it itself and it STILL
won't let me send photos to other camera phones, nor will it allow
me to change to a fun pre recorded voicemail message! This phone
also needs to be charged up practically every day! There's either
something wrong with my particular handset and it's faulty, or this
model of phone is prone to configuration and battery faults. I'm
taking it back to where I bought it and will exchange it with another
Vodafone networked phone. I also read before I bought it that I
could download Real Tones and I can't!

I've had this phone for about one month and can say it's a good
phone: it's very small, so I can carry it in my pocket comfortably,
the interface is very nice, the sound quality excellent and I appreciate
the speakerphone function. I also bought the data cable. The Samsung
PIM & File manager works well and has a pretty graphical interface.
There are only two very annoying troubles: pictures uploaded into
images folder on the handset cannot be used as caller ID (you can
only use photos taken with the phone), and audio file cannot exceed
200kb in size (which forbid the owner to use his own music files
as ringtones, except midi files). If you don't care these two faults
X640 is a really good cell.

"Dropped it few times on the ground - no problems at all!!! It's
strong and it takes a bit of beating... i guess. I'm glad i bought
it!" All in all, I think that's the most important feature. To be
strong. In my opinion this phone is not bad at all (as some folks
said before). There are better phones, off course, but if you want
a better phone you have to waste a lot of money! This phone has
all the primary functions you need. A very good VGA camera or a
MP3 player are not primary functions. Isn't it? Good design, small,
lightweigh and strong... and finally, the most important thing:
it's not expensive. Bad things: the display has more than 65000
colors but it has low resolution (not so good as some phones I have
seen), no Infra-red port (you need to buy a cable in adiction) and
no blue-tooth. You can disable the anoying sound events just turning
on the phone to the silent mode... but it could be anoying too turn
on the phone to the silent mode before and each time you do anything
first. If we add the bad tings and the good things versus price...
I hugely recomend it.

I've had this phone for 1 month and I can say it's a good piece
of plastic and silicon: it features good sound quality and the camera
take nice pictures. I really appreciate the address book peculiarity
and the organizer works well. The "mission accomplished" sound do
not annoy so much as well as the volume can be lowed enough. I also
bought the data cable (not from samsung) and it works with "PC Studio
PIM & File manager v1.0" for E700 model. It's a really nice software.
There is only one, huge fault: altough u can use photos like caller
ID, u cannot use your own images, i.e. uploaded from your PC or
received by MMS. Actually u can upload images in the directory "images"
only, from which u cannot set pictures as caller ID (only as wallpaper).
It's a very big trouble: in fact u have to take new photos with
your phone, and can not use your best shots taken with your "real"
camera. furthermore u can not use pictures such as cartoons or abstract
paintings. excepting this, a good product. PS I hope those rotten
morons who produce phones will eventually realize that pushing their
customer to buy again the accessories (data cable, headphone...)
every time they change their phone it's not a good business, it's
a robbery.

them down to 50%, do a little sharpness thing, do little gamma correction
if you like... I've done some flower and outdoor pics and the result
is unbelievable - perfect colors and no blur in far objects). If
you want bigger photos, go buy a pro camera, thats it! Uploaded
some new audio samples for the signals (don't care much about the
original midi stuff). Music software comes with the USB cable from
Mobile Action (www.mobileaction.com). Dropped it few times on the

Hi again! I buy a cable and it is possible to transfer photos and
sounds from the computer to the phone and vice-versa. I upload to
my computer the photos from my phone and I download photos from
my PC to my phone (in format JPG). I also upload a lot of file sounds
(just like classical music, theme movie songs, theme TV songs, etc...).
Each contact of my list has now a diferent cool sound call!! You
can tranfer MIDI files and it's easy to find them in internet. And
works fast!! I buy a PCB133LBE cable and the software (you will
need it or else you can't do anything) you can find it on samsung
web page. Unfortunately there's a mistake: the PIM & File Manager
2.0 doesn't work!! It's the most important file! How I solve the
problem? I download the version 1.0 from the softare of the E700
and everyting works so fine now. I hope help someone about this
feature, now or in the future. Bye

That's a very nice phone. I particulary enjoy its design. It's also
a very small and lightweight phone. I can use it in my pocket easily.
It has a lot of fuctions, the camera is good and the display is
excellent! Unfortunately there's no an infrared or a bluetooth port
ans so the photo photo transmission a very difficult task... it
is just possible buying a cable in addition or by MMS (wasting money).
That's the only thing I don't enjoy in this phone: the absence of
an infrared or a bluetooth port, everything else is outstanding.
Someone asks: but is there anyway you can stop the phone from answering
as soon as you open it - would like to see who's calling first!
Well, that a very easy question. You can disable that function easily
in the menu. Find the globe icon, than shearch in the list that
feature and disable it! My question is: if I buy a cable to connect
the phone to the PC, I can transfer only photos or I can transfer
sounds and wallpapers too? And which file types can I transfer?
Thanks. My final rating is exellent (4 stars instead 5 stars) because
what I have said before.
