Samsung
U700 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The U700 is a superslim 3G slide phone featuring
a 3 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, and a fully-featured
music player with expandable memory. The touch sensitive buttons
and mirror finish look lovely but do make the phone hard to use.
The silver paint also tends to peel or scratch.
The Samsung U700 is a 3G version of the U600
slide phone. It's got everything that the U600 has, except that
it's about 1 mm thicker and is lacking an FM radio and document
viewer. However, it does have a fast implementation of 3G (HSDPA)
with download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps possible. It also has a glossy
mirror-effect finish that makes it more attractive to look at than
the U600.
As the U700 is so similar to the U600, we're not
going to review it in detail - read our U600
review for that - we're just going to compare the U600 and U700.
The pros of the U700 are that it has 3G and looks
prettier. The pros of the U600 are that it's slightly thinner, has
an FM radio and document viewer. Also, the glossy mirror finish
of the U700 does attract fingerprints and makes it hard to read
the screen in daylight. The U700 scratches very easily too, and
when the silver paint peels, it looks decidedly un-sexy. On balance
we much prefer the U600.
Features of the Samsung U700 include:
- 3G video calling, fast downloading and streaming
- 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and
4x digital zoom
- Video camera (MPEG4 format, up to 1 hour)
- Second video camera (VGA - 640 x 480 pixels)
for video calling
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
- Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA formats)
- ICEpower® Technology by Bang & Olufsen
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- Voice memo recorder (up to 1 hour)
- Integrated handsfree speakerphone
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (POP3 / SMTP / IMAP4)
- T9 predictive text
- 3D Java games plus downloadable games
- Flight mode
- Personal organiser functions
- RSS reader
- Memory: 20 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot
(expandable to 2 Gbytes)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, HSPDA (3.6 Mbps)
- Triband (900/1800/1900 MHz) plus 3G (UMTS)
- Size: 102.5 x 50 x 12.1 mm
- Weight: 86g
- Talktime: 5 hours
- Battery standby: 270 hours

BEWARE THIS PHONE HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN I have owned this phone
for 6 months and still struggle with the touch screen and menu's.
The touch buttons don't respond when you push them yet seem to do
things when you don't want them to- the problem is they are way
too sensitive. It is also really easy to make a video call without
realising which is an expensive annoyance Another irritating "feature"
is trying to send a text message: you have to go through so many
stages to begin typing and if you are not really realy careful you
can exit and lose the complete message half way through, oh and
it takes another 3 or 4 button pushes to send the message. I have
found the battery life reasonable- its never going to be as good
as Sony Ericcson, and my silver has stayed on the phone. However
I have had enough and so have gone back to my old phone and look
forward to my contract coming to an end. Don't bother buying this
phone it will drive you insane

Anyone who has this fone - Vodafone are now offering free repair
of the chrome finish as this is a fault with the handset. So make
sure you take it back to the shop! My problem is with rude people
at VF as well as the stupid design of the fone. You hang up on people

I agree with a lot of the reviews. Silver got off after a month
already. I do have a tip with regards to the problems some of you
described, phone calling or sending sms messages when it's in your
pocker or somewhere else and I'm sure this is a technical configuration
fault. When you end a call by slighting phone downwards, it goes
to a screen saying call has ended. Then phone is locked. But as
soon it will move to home screen (normal screen) it unlocks and
it will start calling or sending messages because of the touchscreen
buttons. You can prevent this by closing the phone, wait it to get
back to start screen and then slight it up and down again. Then
your phone is locked and it won't do those annoying things.

Great little phone. Looks fantastic, lots of features and easy connectivity
to your PC. I particularly like the touch screen buttons and to
all those moaning about them being too sensitive all I can say is
stop using your knuckles to press them. I suspect these people are
the type who jab at the keys rather than pressing them (you dont
use a sledgehammer to swat a fly). All phones will be touch screen
soon so God help you if this one is too difficult for you to use.
However its not perfect. Sending a text is overly complicated and
drawn out and the delivery report comes in the form of another text
rather than a quick on-screen message (filling your inbox VERY quickly).
But on the plus side its very nicely styled, the camera is excellent
and I liek the way you simply brush a button to activate it, very
Star Trek.

sensative buttons on the front of the phone. What a pile of junk!!!!
It keeps doing stuff I don't want it to, and cuts of calls if it
touchs my cheek. Now correct me if im wrong but is the phone not
often held near the face when talking to someone on the phone. Besides
that it does three things I look for in a phone: 1) Making calls
2) Small / Slim 3) Alarm which comes on with the phone off I dont
mind the phone because I am stuck with it. But would not recommend

I have only had this phone for one day, and already I am beginning
to see some clear pro's and con's of it. Others have mentioned a
few of them but here I go anyway. PROS: 1. It looks great. I feel
really cool when I pull this out my pocket, and I have to say it
satisfies the asthetic side of things. 2. The camera is great. Even
when I move a bit when taking a photo, it manages to fix the blur
and make it look great! 3. Nice mirror when screen goes off! 4.
Nice menu, when you pick the animated icons. 5. Keypad feels nice.
6. I lIKE the touchscreen!CON'S: There are more cons for this phone
than pros I think. 1. Complicated message sending and general message
centre! ARG! This has to be THE most annoying thing about the phone.
It really does take a freaking AGE to send a text. It is slow to
type, slow to pick a contact! Just so slooooow! 2. The fact I have
to buy a 'phone sock' for it to go in my bag with my stuff. Okay,
I know. But I can't put this in my bag with my keys now can I? I
think it should have come with a plain black 'sock' or something.
3. Complicatedness! This phone is so UN- user friendly. It took
me a heck of a long time to find all the menus, change my ringtone
(which by the way is practically silent on the loudest setting).
4. Touch screen is good but sometimes when you 'do' stuff it makes
it really easy to call people by mistake. I have done this twice
now.. hmm.. also vodafone live seems to pop up a lot. 5. Unlocking
it is too easy. You only need to press the circle button twice.
This happens easily in a bag unless you put your phone in a cast
iron case that is. Grr. I could go on but I won't. I do LIKE this
phone, but the general exitedness wore off when I bought it and
I felt I wanted my old faithfull motorola V525 (yes really) back.
It is sleek, sexy, looks good and performs at a satisfactory level
however it has hidden flaws underneath the seemingly perfect exterior.
I like it though. I think it deserves 3.5 stars! :)

I hate this phone!!! My previous phone was a Samsung so when it
was time to upgrade I chose the U700...I am so dissapointed. The
buttons are a nightmare, I am constantly accidently video calling
people. It sends several blank messages without me knowing when
it is in my bag...even though the keypad was locked. Although it
looked good initially, the paint is flaking off and it now looks
cheap and tacky. Samsung seem to have taken a step back with this
phone, the features arent as good as those on my last phone. It
annoys me I cant save messages in a folder and that I have to either
delete my whole inbox or delete messages one at a time. I wish i
had gone for the Nokia...not sure what to do with this phone, contemplating
buying something else as i still have another year of my contract...not
sure I can put up with it for that long. Dont choose the U700!!!

I have now had this phone a month after having it as a replacement
for my broken u600. and have been very dissapointed ...to start
the phone feels cheap and tacky compared to the u600 (but slider
feels better) it has cheap painted plastic which flakes off. keypad
however is better to use with nice feel to it. Now i dont care what
anyone says the touch buttons are awful totally awful sometimes
they are not very precise and need hitting more than once other
times you find yourself slightly brushing them and other menus popping
up...just so annoying. Also if phone is in pocket and you garb it
to pull it out its already answered call where fingers touch screen
and answer it..it may be locked out in normal mode but can be answerd
closed one ringing, really annoying. so i would stay clear of this
phone after a months use it looks battered real cheap finishes to
it. Cant wait to be able to change it again soon to something with
a quality feel

This is honestly the worst phone I've ever owned. Its impossible
to use, and has the most useless software on it! When it fails to
send a message it exits the message screen without retrying or asking
you what to do. The touch buttons are a nightmare. The silver effect
plastic peels of almost instantly and it scratches insainly easily.
I'm getting rid of it ASAP!

I've had this phone for 3 months and really wish I had returned
it within the first 2 weeks. It looks great and has all the features
I wanted but... The silver chrome effect started pealing off after
a month. The touch sensitive buttons are too sensitive, if I'm scrolling
left through a text it regularly starts deleting text as my thumb
hovers near the clear button. It also regularly backs out of the
message so I loose the whole thing. Numerous times I've been talking
to someone and it's gone onto to loud speaker because it’s
too close to my face. To unlock the phone you only need to press
the centre button twice so it frequently unlocks it self in my pocket
and bag and has been known to take a blank picture and send it 9
times, call people and dial up vodafone live with out my knowledge.
Oh and I can hardly hear people, even with the volume maxed out.
I could go on, but it's too depressing. And worse because it’s
a contract phone I won't be able to upgrade for another 15 months.
This phone looks great while sat on my desk but is the most infuriating
phone I've ever owned.

The Samsung U700 is attractive but it would have been better if
the features present in U600 that is not in U700 are also incorporated
in it. Therefore, i would recommend that a new version be made that
will accommodate the features of both U600 and U700.

Simply the worst phone I have ever had. It looks great which is
why I chose it. Have only it had it about a month and the silver
coating is chipped in several places - it is basically plastic with
a silver film on top. The touch sensitive keys ARE too sensitive
and seem to randomly fire off when you are not looking. Sound and
picture quality are ok. My main problem is the obscenely poor battery
life - needs to be charged every day, and I don't use it much or
have bluetooth on. have gone back to using my old D600 and ahve
never been happier. Really, don't get a U700.

Although the phone looks stunning it is one of the worst phones
i have ever had. The touch screen is too sensitive and is driving
me insane! You hang up on people you come off the net it is just
stupid. The slide mechanism is rough. The camera is too fiddly and
you have to mess with the settings to get the right picture. The
phone also has a habit of making strange nosie’s through out
the night like a ticking sound. Sending a text takes ages and ages
going through all the menus, battery life is short and it seems
to want to be charged all the time. The music player is a waste
of time along with the video player I simply would not recommend
this phone to anyone and simply say go with a sony erricson because
I am going back to them as soon as possible. ****STAY AWAY FROM
THIS PHONE**** if it was possible to not give this phone a star
i would do

Got my one last week after reading all the reviews thouroughly and
very pleased with it. I was worried about all the reviews saying
too sensitve etc. but it is fine and i got use to it very quickly.
After you get use to the new way of getting around the phone it
is easy and as great features. The camera is good, music is good
and it looks damn good! If you are thinking of getting this phone
buy it, it wont let you down...if you can use mobile phones that
is. If you don't use your mobile that much and arn't a mobile person
then maybe this phone isn't for you...otherwise its top notch!
