Samsung
Tocco Lite Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The Tocco Lite is
Samsung's answer to the LG Cookie. Available in black, gold, pink
or silver, it's a bargain touchscreen phone. Although it lacks 3G,
it offers a fabulous fun user interface with easy access to Facebook
and YouTube, plus all the features that you'd expect: a 3.2 megapixel
camera, video recording, music player, FM radio with RDS, memory card
slot and Bluetooth.
Best buy: *Free* from the Carphone
Warehouse; or £49.89 on Pay as you Go from Dialaphone
(Black or White).
Review: May 2009. Updated July 2009.
The best-selling phone in the first half of 2009 has
probably been the LG Cookie. The secret to
the Cookie's success is simple: it's a touchscreen phone with loads
of gadgets for just £100. So now Samsung have released the Tocco
Lite to go head to head against the Cookie for best budget touchscreen
phone. Which phone will win in the Cookie vs Tocco Lite battle?
Physically, the two devices are exactly the same size,
to within a millimetre! The screens are identical in type, size, colour
definition and pixels. With a good size screen (3 inches) and high resolution,
Samsung's TouchWiz user interface works well on the Tocco Lite. TouchWiz
can now be regarded as a mature technology, and it seems to be pretty
much universally popular. Mobile widgets let you customise your home
screen and give easy access to apps such as the clock, weather forecast,
etc. There are also widgets for popular web apps such as MySpace, Facebook
and YouTube. The built-in accelerometer sensor will automatically rotate
the screen when you turn the phone on its side, so you can easily switch
between portrait and landscape modes. The virtual QWERTY keyboard is
easy to use, and we think that you'll have no problems using the touchscreen.
The addition of "real" keys for call, send and select make
it even easier to use than a full touchphone. The user interface also
supports handwriting recognition and gesture lock.
The spec of the Tocco Lite is virtually identical to
the Cookie's. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera with digital zoom. Samsung's
"Smile Shot" feature lets you take a photo when the camera
thinks your subject is smiling. You can also edit your photos on the
camera itself. A basic camcorder is available too. There's a music player,
FM radio with RDS, and support for downloadable MP3 ringtones. Audio
quality is good, with a virtual 3D surround effect, an equaliser and
support for DNSe. The memory is similar to the Cookie's, and is expandable
to 16GB with a microSD card. When it comes to connectivity, the Tocco
Lite supports Bluetooth and USB. Like the Cookie, there's no WiFi and
no 3G, which means that features like YouTube are going to be on the
slow and jerky side. But remember that this is a budget phone - you
can't have everything, and this seems like a reasonable compromise.
The web browser is very good, making excellent use
of the large screen and with easy access to RSS feeds, Google Mail,
Google Search and Google Maps. The lack of 3G does hamper the web browser
though in terms of download speed.
Battery life seems to be pretty good. The Tocco Lite
doesn't have the heavy duty battery of its big brothers, the Tocco
or Omnia, but it has fewer gadgets
to power, so it seems to be up to the job. Just don't expect it to last
as long as your ancient Nokia and you'll be OK.
Taken on its own terms, the Tocco Lite is a fabulous
phone. Whilst it lacks some of the features of high-end phones (3G,
GPS, 8 MP camera, WiFi, etc), it does offer a lot for your money: a
beautiful touchscreen user interface with 3.2 megapixel camera, stereo
FM radio with RDS, accelerometer sensor, handwriting recognition and
up to 16GB microSD expandable memory. It's available at launch with
some fabulous contract deals: free line rental, or free gifts such as
an XBOX 360, etc, and it comes in a choice of pink or black. The big
question for many will be whether to choose the Tocco Lite or the LG
Cookie. We have struggled to find a real reason to prefer one over
the other, and frankly we can't. It seems that Samsung have made a phone
so similar to the Cookie that there's virtually nothing to choose between
them. But don't get the impression that we dislike the Tocco Lite -
quite the reverse. It's an excellent phone offering outstanding value.
Whether you choose the Tocco Lite or the Cookie you'll be getting one
of the best phone bargains of 2009. On balance, our user reviews seem
to be giving a slightly higher score to the Tocco Lite.
Update: a minority of users have reported a problem
with the audio cutting out every few seconds, so that you can't hear
the caller. As far as we can tell this happens on O2 only. Mike B has
a possible fix for this problem for O2 users: Try going to Menu - Applications
- O2 - Get Settings. Install the settings you are sent and reset the
phone. Since I did that, and received the settings for PAYG from O2
I haven't had any problems with calls, (at least for the last 2 days).
Hope it helps ! Thanks to Mike B, and if you have tried this, please
write a review to let us know how it worked. Please also report this
problem if you experience it on any other network. John L has an alternative
fix for O2 users: go to settings, network settings and for network mode
select GSM 900/1800.
Features of the Samsung Tocco Lite include:
- 3.2 megapixel camera with digital zoom
- Video recording (QVGA 15fps)

I've had mine for 2 years problem free! It may not be the latest or
most technologically advanced phone but overall it is great! You will
never find a phone free from little annoying things such as the headphones
being necessary to listen to the radio and the headphones and charger
using the same slot, the unlock button taking a few seconds to unlock
and it is easily scratched and dented. Sure, these things are a pain
but you could pay £100s and no phone would be perfect. It does what
it says on the tin and more. Reasonably good camera, texts and phones
well, pretty good touchscreen I've found, easy to customise, has lots
of useful little features such as a measurement converter and world
clock. Overall a pretty good phone if you're looking for something simple
to text & call with. I'm now hoping to replace mine with a HTC Wildfire
as it is more Internet-friendly and has access to apps, whereas this
phone lacks both of these. But if good Internet isn't vital to you,
then the Tocco Lite is a fantastic, fashionable, simple, durable phone.

My wife hated this phone after she bought it a few weeks ago in early
January 2012 so I had it off her instead and love it. She now has LG
C360 which she loves. Bought my grandaughter a Toco Lite two years ago
and she give me that phone when she upgraded to HTC Wildfire S so I
have a spare phone/battery but the pink colour doesn't suit me. The
Toco Lite is my first camera phone and will not use that function nor
the radio. Why don't mobile phone manufactures just make a dual/triple
sim (useful function) mobile phone and keep the rest of that useless
camera/radio stuff off it. But an outstanding phone and find it easy
to text. age sixty-seven and three quaters.

The Tocco Lite is a very handy phone with brilliant battery life. After
about a year or so the touch starts going though. The camera and camcorder
are not bad. The fm radio is very good but you have to plug the speakers
in to get it to work. I have also realized that a fault in the phone
is that the speakers and battery charger go into the same slot. This
phone is lightweight and a brilliant first phone, but it lacks 3G. If
you are looking for a very technical smartphone don't go for this as
it is quite basic. The facebook and social networking is very slow and
a let down but if you are looking for a long lasting battery, not too
technical small handy phone without android this it for you.

heavy. If you want a phone that does loads of things then this one is
not for you. It has a nice camera that takes good pictures and good

This phone is quite good. Cant use my music for incoming texts. Why????
The internet is so slow and is confusing. All i wanted is to go onto
google, i waited for at least 10mins and gave up waiting anymore. The
texting is good and is clear to understand. The camera is ok but when
you want to record a video when its dark you cnt as it doesnt have night
mode. It does for pictures but not videos. This phone holds a lot of
music, photos and videos ( depening how much your memory card can hold).
Overall i would recommend this phone for people who just want to text,
make phone calls and take the odd pictures now and again. This phone
looks good and is not expensive.

Maybe I'm just stuck in the dark ages, but as my first touch screen
phone, I really couldn't get to grips with it. Whilst composing a message,
it makes words up, doesn't respond very well and is highly frustrating.
I also had problems with my photos, taking them was easy but if you
wanted to edit them or make one your wallpaper, I struggled adjusting

I have had this phone for about a week now and I can't stand it. Texting
takes ages as it's very easy to switch off/on T9 or change the language
and when using predictive text, you can't type single letters. You have
to switch T9 off and type in the letter manually. The screen is already
terribly scratched even though I always keep my phone in an empty pocket
so I have no idea what's scratching it, it must be super-susceptible
to scratching. Also, every time I switch the camera on, the phone completely
freezes and I have to wait about 10 minutes for it to sort itself out.
Finally, and this is just a personal preference, I love being able to
listen to the radio on my phone but you can only use the samsung headphones
provided and the volume only goes down to certain volume which is way
too loud for me and means I can't listen to music or the radio on the

I Bought this phone on all the recommendations on this site, however
there are several annoying things on it. For a start the lock/unlock
button is on the side of the phone and only needs a single press to
unlock the phone and it also stands 'proud' of the shell. This means
you lock the phone and it accidently becomes unlocked in your pocket
and the next time you look at the phone you find youve been surfing
the net (at expense) for the last 10 minutes. (is there a way of keeping
it locked?). Also when composing a text message it doesnt show how many
messagess it goes over until you finish the message. I Haven't experienced
the 'sound cutting out during calls' like so many other users... but
I dont phone too much so maybe it will rear its ugly head later. The
touchscreen is generally responsive and is a very nicely illuminated
screen... until you go outdoors when (like most other colour phones
on the market) you can hardly see it. (oh the good old days of the monochrome
when you could actually see what you were texting on the screen). Camera
seems to be very good and video quality is very passable. Radio fine.
A Stylish phone let down by one or two design flaws.

I have owned the Tocco lite for less than a week. I am sad to say that
my experience mirrors that of a number of users in that the phone cuts
out in the middle of conversation for a few seconds and then seems to
work again but only after making the person on the other end think I
have hung up and say 'Hello hello' many times over. There are a couple
of other flaws to the phone, the phonebook listing surnames first instead
of first names, texting can work fine if you are really concentrating
but there is no speed texting like on my old buttons phone as it is
very easy to switch languages and T9 on and off and write a load of
nonsense. However those issues I would have got past as the good points
- the SAR is reasonably low (0.5) the battery life very good, the camera
okay, but one thing a phone has to be good with is taking calls and
this fails on that front...

I have owned the occo Lite for two weeks now. I was tempted to go for
the LG Cookie but have heard they are very unreliable. I am very picky
about my phones so I knew I had to be a little easy going on the Tocco
Lite. I was expecting slow menu loading times and maybe the odd second
catch up time, however I have not experienced any of this at all. It
is very quick and efficent its a delight to use. The build quality is
superb and it really feels like a £300 pound phone. I have had no problems
whatsover. The camera does lack flash(The Tocco Lite does not have flash,do
not beleive it!)however the camera picture quality is superb and is
very quick to process not like the slow cybershots. The music is reasonably
loud and clear and beats my freinds W705 for volume and clarity.Th only
thing I have experienced is Images are a little hard to browse but then
again I have not really looked into it as I do not really look at my
images regulary. But I am confident that like the rest of the phone
once you know how it is a pleasure to use. I am very happy with this
handset and it is the best one I have had in terms of quality and reliability
It beats the W910I,NOKIA 5310 the last handsets I had that not surprisingly
went wrong!Typical SE and NOKIA. I think this phone will easily out
class the LG Cookie and would recomend you buy one now before they are
gone. Once the sucess of this handsets leaks out everyone will own one.

The camera does flash but not all the time, strange. The widgets are
very useful and you can switch off the ones you wont use. Internet access
is fairly quick and very accessible. I will recommend this to anyone
who wants a touch screen phone but doesnt want to lay out more than
£100-£150. The battery life is brilliant a full charge can play the

I have just got the Tocco Lite S5230 and I am very pleased with it.
I had read most of the very positive reviews, and the only "fault" that
appeared common was finding how to change the text alert. I found out
how to change the text alert,by changing the "Sound Settings widget!"
Go tothe "Widget Settings" menu and tick ""Sound Settings"..this adds
a purple phone icon on the widget menu. ( This is the "Sound Settings"
widget ) Tap.. Sound settings widget-== drop down menu to == =="New
Messages=="then choose your MP3 from-- "Message Alert Tone " - == then==Save.
This will change the both text message alert tone AND ALSO will set
your email message alert, to the same choice of MP3,if you set your
email settings to auto- download the headers, every hour or so. This
phone has everything I need and it's a better touch sensitive phone
than the Viewty Lite which I sold to get the Tocco Lite. I also use
the hardbuttons for Volume up/down on the phones side to rapidly scroll
the screen one page at a time. So now I think its perfect. Outstanding..!!
.No Kidding !!

I've been using this phone just over a week, and love it. I was going
to buy the LG Cookie, or the LG KS360 - I kept changing my mind so dad
told me he wouldn't order me one. Then I found this on an 02 contract
(100 mins, unlimited texts), and asked for it. It arrived the next day,
but we didn't set it up for a few days. It took nearly 24 hours to fully
charge the first time! The touch screen is amazingly responsive, even
with the protective stuff on it. The picture is clear. The camera is
ok, if you have a steady hand, but much better than my old U600. I don't
have problems with selecting when trying to scrool, and I don't think
a stylus is at all necessary. All my mates have the LG Cookie, but say
mine looks much more expensive - it feels nicer too! The biggest problem
is getting the back off - it is quite bendy, and looks/feels like it
will snap. Also brilliantly easy for downloading music and stuff onto
it - just USB it without even installing the software. It can also take
some text files, and ebooks. I aboslutely love this phone. Ok, it isn't
the most expensive, so it doesn't have some features - but ITS A PHONE!
I personally won't pay much for phones, because I would be worried about
damaging it. This phone is perfect for me, and I wouldn't change it
for the world! Amazing phone, much better than the LG Cookie!
