In a nutshell: The Tocco Lite
is Samsung's answer to the LG Cookie. Available in black, pink
or white, it's a bargain touchscreen phone. Although it lacks
3G, it offers a fabulous fun user interface with easy access to
Facebook and YouTube, plus all the features that you'd expect:
a 3.2 megapixel camera, video recording, music player, FM radio
with RDS, memory card slot and Bluetooth. Available free on contract
with a choice of free gifts: from free line rental to a free Playstation
3. Best buy: *Free* with £230 auto cashback or a free
XBOX 360 Elite from Mobiles.co.uk
(Black) or Mobiles.co.uk
(Pink) or Dialaphone
(Black); or £49.90 on PAYG from Mobiles.co.uk
(Black or Pink) or £59.95 from the Carphone
Warehouse (Black or Pink).
Review: May 2009. Updated July 2009.
The best-selling phone in the first half of 2009
has probably been the LG Cookie. The
secret to the Cookie's success is simple: it's a touchscreen phone
with loads of gadgets for just £100. So now Samsung have released
the Tocco Lite to go head to head against the Cookie for best budget
touchscreen phone. Which phone will win in the Cookie vs Tocco Lite
battle?
Well, the Tocco Lite is arriving on the scene 6
months later than the Cookie, so it should be 6 months ahead of
the curve, and a clear winner. But in fact the specification is
almost exactly identical to the Cookie, and the Tocco Lite is retailing
at a slightly higher price, although this may fall in the weeks
after launch. What then, is the point of the Tocco?
Physically, the two devices are exactly the same
size, to within a millimetre! The screens are identical in type,
size, colour definition and pixels. With a good size screen (3 inches)
and high resolution, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface works well
on the Tocco Lite. TouchWiz can now be regarded as a mature technology,
and it seems to be pretty much universally popular. Mobile widgets
let you customise your home screen and give easy access to apps
such as the clock, weather forecast, etc. There are also widgets
for popular web apps such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. The
built-in accelerometer sensor will automatically rotate the screen
when you turn the phone on its side, so you can easily switch between
portrait and landscape modes. The virtual QWERTY keyboard is easy
to use, and we think that you'll have no problems using the touchscreen.
The addition of "real" keys for call, send and select
make it even easier to use than a full touchphone. The user interface
also supports handwriting recognition and gesture lock.
As we commented earlier, the spec of the Tocco
Lite is virtually identical to the Cookie's. There's a 3.2 megapixel
camera with digital zoom. Samsung's "Smile Shot" feature
lets you take a photo when the camera thinks your subject is smiling.
You can also edit your photos on the camera itself. A basic camcorder
is available too. There's a music player, FM radio with RDS, and
support for downloadable MP3 ringtones. Audio quality is good, with
a virtual 3D surround effect, an equaliser and support for DNSe.
The memory is similar to the Cookie's, and is expandable to 16GB
with a microSD card. When it comes to connectivity, the Tocco Lite
supports Bluetooth and USB. Like the Cookie, there's no WiFi and
no 3G, which means that features like YouTube are going to be on
the slow and jerky side. But remember that this is a budget phone
- you can't have everything, and this seems like a reasonable compromise.
The web browser is very good, making excellent
use of the large screen and with easy access to RSS feeds, Google
Mail, Google Search and Google Maps. The lack of 3G does hamper
the web browser though in terms of download speed.
Battery life seems to be pretty good. The Tocco
Lite doesn't have the heavy duty battery of its big brothers, the
Tocco or Omnia,
but it has fewer gadgets to power, so it seems to be up to the job.
Just don't expect it to last as long as your ancient Nokia and you'll
be OK.
Taken on its own terms, the Tocco Lite is a fabulous
phone. Whilst it lacks some of the features of high-end phones (3G,
GPS, 8 MP camera, WiFi, etc), it does offer a lot for your money:
a beautiful touchscreen user interface with 3.2 megapixel camera,
stereo FM radio with RDS, accelerometer sensor, handwriting recognition
and up to 16GB microSD expandable memory. It's available at launch
with some fabulous contract deals: free line rental, or free gifts
such as an XBOX 360, etc, and it comes in a choice of pink or black.
The big question for many will be whether to choose the Tocco Lite
or the LG Cookie. We have struggled to
find a real reason to prefer one over the other, and frankly we
can't. It seems that Samsung have made a phone so similar to the
Cookie that there's virtually nothing to choose between them. But
don't get the impression that we dislike the Tocco Lite - quite
the reverse. It's an excellent phone offering outstanding value.
Whether you choose the Tocco Lite or the Cookie you'll be getting
one of the best phone bargains of 2009. On balance, our user reviews
seem to be giving a slightly higher score to the Tocco Lite.
Update: a minority of users have reported a problem
with the audio cutting out every few seconds, so that you can't
hear the caller. As far as we can tell this happens on O2 only.
Mike B has a possible fix for this problem for O2 users: Try going
to Menu - Applications - O2 - Get Settings. Install the settings
you are sent and reset the phone. Since I did that, and received
the settings for PAYG from O2 I haven't had any problems with calls,
(at least for the last 2 days). Hope it helps ! Thanks to Mike B,
and if you have tried this, please write a review to let us know
how it worked. Please also report this problem if you experience
it on any other network. John L has an alternative fix for O2 users:
go to settings, network settings and for network mode select GSM
900/1800.
Features of the Samsung Tocco Lite include:
3.2 megapixel camera with digital zoom
Video recording (QVGA 15fps)
Display: TFT, 262K colours, 240 x 400 pixels
(3.0 inches)

Same here. Nice little phone, clever user interface and some nice
features. However, I am on my third handset using O2 sim and every
single one so far has had a problem with the microphone. Signal
strength is maximum for both callers, but the Tocco microphone cuts
out for about 5 seconds a number of times during each call. The
bundled software also doesn't allow upgrading - device not recognised,

I Bought this phone on all the recommendations on this site, however
there are several annoying things on it. For a start the lock/unlock
button is on the side of the phone and only needs a single press
to unlock the phone and it also stands 'proud' of the shell. This
means you lock the phone and it accidently becomes unlocked in your
pocket and the next time you look at the phone you find youve been
surfing the net (at expense) for the last 10 minutes. (is there
a way of keeping it locked?). Also when composing a text message
it doesnt show how many messagess it goes over until you finish
the message. I Haven't experienced the 'sound cutting out during
calls' like so many other users... but I dont phone too much so
maybe it will rear its ugly head later. The touchscreen is generally
responsive and is a very nicely illuminated screen... until you
go outdoors when (like most other colour phones on the market) you
can hardly see it. (oh the good old days of the monochrome when
you could actually see what you were texting on the screen). Camera
seems to be very good and video quality is very passable. Radio
fine. A Stylish phone let down by one or two design flaws. Rating:

I have owned the Tocco lite for less than a week. I am sad to say
that my experience mirrors that of a number of users in that the
phone cuts out in the middle of conversation for a few seconds and
then seems to work again but only after making the person on the
other end think I have hung up and say 'Hello hello' many times
over. There are a couple of other flaws to the phone, the phonebook
listing surnames first instead of first names, texting can work
fine if you are really concentrating but there is no speed texting
like on my old buttons phone as it is very easy to switch languages
and T9 on and off and write a load of nonsense. However those issues
I would have got past as the good points - the SAR is reasonably
low (0.5) the battery life very good, the camera okay, but one thing
a phone has to be good with is taking calls and this fails on that
front... Rating:

going to buy the LG Cookie, or the LG KS360 - I kept changing my
mind so dad told me he wouldn't order me one. Then I found this
on an 02 contract (100 mins, unlimited texts), and asked for it.
It arrived the next day, but we didn't set it up for a few days.
It took nearly 24 hours to fully charge the first time! The touch
screen is amazingly responsive, even with the protective stuff on
it. The picture is clear. The camera is ok, if you have a steady
hand, but much better than my old U600. I don't have problems with
selecting when trying to scrool, and I don't think a stylus is at
all necessary. All my mates have the LG Cookie, but say mine looks
much more expensive - it feels nicer too! The biggest problem is
getting the back off - it is quite bendy, and looks/feels like it
will snap. Also brilliantly easy for downloading music and stuff
onto it - just USB it without even installing the software. It can
also take some text files, and ebooks. I aboslutely love this phone.
Ok, it isn't the most expensive, so it doesn't have some features
- but ITS A PHONE! I personally won't pay much for phones, because
I would be worried about damaging it. This phone is perfect for

everything out myslef. i was disappointed it had no flash but i
dont use my camera a lot and in the day it takes pictures fine.
I recieved the samsung pc studio cd with mine it was in the box.
Also the vibration thing that someone mentioned earlier is easy
to turn off, that is the one thing i looked for in the manual. when
the phone is unlocked u just press the volume key and the little
menu to turn the vibration comes on then u alter the intensity.
The screen is really responsive i hardly ever have to toutch twice
and the menus and operations are really fast. a great phone especially
for the price! Rating:

features except one. Cant seem to change the text alert. But I find
it amazingly easy to text with and the touch screen in general good
to use. I was a bit worried about going to a touch screen phone
but it really supprised me. If you give it chance you should be
very impressed. It looks good, works well and any pronblems listed
on this site by other users I am yet to experience. Very, very good. Rating:

I had the LG Cookie for two weeks and wasn't very impressed with
it.The caller volume didn't seem to be high enough and as I wished
to use the phone mainly as a phone !!! all the other bells and whistles
didn't really interest me.However , when I exchanged it for the
Tocco Lite it became immediately apparent that this was in a different
class.Don't get me wrong, the Cookie was o.k. but the samsung was
so much better all round. Firstly the caller clarity was better, the
camera seems to give better results and has slightly less shutter-lag
and the user interface seems better (runs smoother and quicker). There
is also an extra 'wallpaper' screen so you can display 3 groups
of applications instead of 2.To be really honest, overall, there
isn't a big difference between the two as other review sites will
tell you , but I feel that i have a better all-round phone with
the Tocco Lite.I never felt settled with the Cookie but I do love
my Tocco-Lite !! Rating:

I recently bought this phone, love the way it looks and it's features
but my one seem to have a serious problem. It cuts your voice during
the phone call, so the person on the end of the line can't hear
half of what you say. I can still hear them, but it goes completely
silent for them for a couple of seconds. This keeps happening quite
a few times during all the calls I've made. I was wondering if it's
just me or has anyone else experienced this problem? Rating:

I believe there are two (or maybe more) Samung phones that can go
under the Tocco lite branding, S5230(uk) and S5233(Samsung India
website). The UK version does not come with a stylus and more importantly
have no room for it to be held by the phone itself (stylus can be
dangled via loop). Annoying but using your fingers is OK. Touchscreen
is not mature enough for scrolling without errors, use volume buttons
to scroll up/down instead. Phone seems to do what it's supposed
to so far, camera/radio OK no quirks yet(fingers crossed). Battery
life is good, typing is fast compared to conventional phones. Ability
to work offline and in no sim mode will prolong it's usability should
you upgrade in the future. Warranty card is 24 months so should
outlast most contracts. Overall, all phone essentials in a usable
package. Rating:

i got this phone for my birthday and it is absolutley brilliant.
the touchscreen is highly responsive and looks wonderful. the ringtones
are pleanty loud enough and the vibration is high enough to get
your attention in silent mode. dispite the lack of any high speed
data transfer the internet is sufficient for things such as facebook.
the use of three home screens you can customize with widgets means
you can set up the phone so it does exactly what you want through
widgets. all in all this is a graet phone and exelent value for
money. if you want an effective, sturdy and cheap touchscreen phone
that has almost all of the must have features, this is deffinatley
the phone for you. i would reccoment this phone highly to anybody,

I got this phone as an upgrade last week from o2 was really pleased
with it i wanted a new fancy touch screen type phone it was light
but felt solid had great battery life loud ring tone and loud microphone
(all most too loud)thought my wife was shouting at me then when
i got home i started to try some of the functions ie texting and
web browse as i use facebook and bbc news but i soon started to
get frustrated with it the web browse is rubbish to big too small
cant enlarge the screen. the touch screen is none responsive some
times it either works or if you push harder across the screen it
suddenly races up or down passed your desired icon the texting is
poor you have to switch screens to use symbols the camara does not
have auto focus or flash its a shame i could go on. If your not
to bothered about using the phone other than to make calls im sure
its fine for kids too but samsung could have made an absolute stunner
if they bothered to think about some of the menus and touch screen.

Awful phone. Thankfully I got it on 28 days approval so I am able
to return it, which I will be doing. The constant beep beep every
time you touch the screen is very annoying, there must be a way
to switch this off but you try finding it. When you are scrolling
the phone thinks that you are selecting and loads a screen that
you don't want. The manual is so basic it doesn't tell you a fraction
of things that you need to know. Maybe its just me looking at the
other reviewer's comments but this phone just doesn't do 'it'. I
am going back to my Samsung G600 with its conventional keys. Rating:

Hi I purchased this phone a week before. It is superbly good phone.
Playing Video is just like it playing in any computer or TV - amazing
quality. Audio is also good, very easy to navigable menu. Calling
functions are very good, phone book search is bit messy though good.
I can't compare the touch sensitivity with iphone or nay of that
kind coz I never used one. Anyway in my experience it is good, but
comparison with that kind of phone is meaningless as price of iphone
is 3 times higher . Only problem I felt is , you can't take pictures
in lesser brighter places, as the night mode doesn't make any difference
at all. One important thing is, please do not use the pouch come
with the phone, it already spoiled the rear side of my phone - created
scratches. The final conclusion is it very good value for money...

I love this phone, got it 2 days ago from Carphonewarehouse house
on Pay As You Go. As the Editor says it's the twin of LG Cookie
mobile, which I had last Autumn. What I like about this mobile is
that when I looking through the phonebook it does not accidentially
dial an entry in error. Also when I had the LG Cookie & dialled
my automated telephone banking service, and had to press x for this
service and xx for the other. My bank thought had trouble accessing
the numbers & Would get automatically put through to an operator.
This phone has a simple keylock on the right-hand side which you
can use to unlock phone in conversation and put you caller on speaker
or mute. Phonebook icon is excellent as it can group names in Contacts,
Groups or my "Favourites" this the Speedial function and can take
12 numbers (inc. Voicemail) where usually standard on most phones
is 9. Texting is excellent, you got a choice of portrait mode or
turn the phone into landscape mode and type the text in qwerty mode.
The phone has the usually organiser items, calculator, alarm, calendar.
There is a radio, good camera and mp3 player but bonus item that
I'm playing with is the Google Maps, search your location, get directions
etc. You can add memory as there is memory card slot. I recommend
this phone Rating:
