In a nutshell: The Steel is a Vodafone-exclusive handset
with premium looks. With a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus,
a music player, FM radio, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and support for 8 GB memory
cards it will tick a lot of people's boxes. On the negative side
it lacks a camera flash, battery life is below average and the phone
has a tendency to freeze or switch itself off. Best buy: *Free* from Vodafone.
Review:
September 2008. Updated May 2009.
The
Samsung Steel is a Vodafone-exclusive phone. It looks like a premium
phone, with its steel body and smart appearance, but actually it's
priced in the entry-level category and is available free on contract
for as low as £15. The Steel gives you the looks of the Samsung
Soul at a fraction of the cost! The Steel isn't a touchscreen-operated
device like the Soul, but is a conventional slider with a nice solid
feel and an easy-to-use conventional keypad. The display is a generous
2.2 inches across, making it one of the biggest displays in this
type of phone.
The
Steel has some great features, including high-speed HSDPA giving
7.2 Mbps download speeds over the 3G network. A front-facing camera
enables video calling, whilst the main rear-mounted camera is better
than you'd expect in this price range: it's a 3.2 megapixel camera
with autofocus, although it's lacking a flash. There's a music player,
and an FM radio too. The 30 Mbytes of internal memory lets you store
around half a dozen MP3 tracks, but you can add a memory card of
up to 8 GB capacity.
Vodafone
are quoting a battery life of 23 days, but this is an absurd figure.
In reality the Steel doesn't have a particularly good battery life:
most users will have to charge every other day we would guess.
In
summary, the Samsung Steel has the looks of a high-end phone, mid-range
features and an entry-level price point. If you can live with the
battery life and the lack of a camera flash, then it's a great buy.
Just one further addition - several of our users have complained
that the Steel freezes or randomly switches off, so take this into
consideration before buying. The new Samsung
S7330 may be a better choice, although it's exclusive to 3,
and the Samsung Soul is worth a look
now that its price has come down considerably.
Features of the Samsung Steel include:
3G with video calling and 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and 3x digital
zoom
Video recording
Second video camera for video calling
Display: TFT, 262K colours, 240 x 320 pixels
(2.2 inches)
Music player
FM radio
64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
Integrated handsfree speakerphone
Personal organiser functions
Memory: 30 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot
(expandable to 8 GB)
Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE, 3G HSDPA
Triband (900/1800/1900 MHz) plus 3G (UMTS)

Had this phone for about 5/6 months and haven't had the problems
people complain about. Yea sure it scrathes a little and the greasy
marks show, but what phone doesn't have those problems? Battery
life is great, music player will happily do 2 days solid, and easily
lasts a week or so normally. Only battery killer is the bluetooth,
best to turn that off most of the time. Camera isn't great, but
its good enough, just be sure to get a memory card with it. Texting
is different to other phones and you have to get used to holding
it, as the weight is distributed differently to SE's and nokia's
etc, once you get used to it becomes second nature as it does with
any other phone. Liked the large screen which many people seem to
think makes the phone to big, but I'm not a fan of the little phones
most people like. For the price its an excellent buy! Rating:

I recently upgraded to the Steel but, for the 1st time ever, I sent
it back within a day. I'm very unfussy but I just didn't like this
phone. It's bigger & chunkier than I expected, the camera isn't
great but, worst of all, the screen is EXTREMELY reflective. I had
real problems reading anything on the screen when I was outside!

I have had my Samsung Steel now for approximately 3 months and think
that it is a brilliant piece of kit. I am quite in to photography
and wanted a phone that could take decent pix at times when a camera
wasn't available. The 3.2 MP developed pix are perfectly good enough
for an album and are surprisingly difficult to determine from conventional
6mp camera developed pictures. OK so there is no flash but I very
rarely takepix in dimmly lit conditions anyway. The screen is huge
and very clear, particularly whilst viewing pix on slide-show using
the wide-screen horizontal viewing option. Probably the best feature
about this phone is the huge 8MB micro SD card that can be installed
easily. I bought one from the internet for less than £15.00and it
has transformed the steel in to nothing short of an in-depth multimedia
entertainment system. I have over 80 full mp3 music albums on file
as well as numerous pictures, videos and podcasts. This feature
is just awesome, particularly in view of having the digital radio
which is crystal clear on the off chance that I can not find a track
to fit the moment. The homescreen picture slide show is another
feature worth mentioning which was a great surprise. I have a number
of my family photos revolving on the standard screen idle display,
which is great. I could go on and on about all the great features
that this phone has. I have read a vast number of reviews for the
steel and can find very little to agree with in relation to negative
points. If there is a functional problem mentioned I could almost
always tell that the person writing the review has not read the
instruction manual correctly....mind you with the amount of functions
available, it takes a while. Before I go, it is also worth mentioning
that I paid £80 for this phone. With this purchase I unexpectedly
received a "free" digital frame viewer (worth £40) and £20 top up
voucher, so I effectively paid £20 for this amazing piece of technology!

I have had my phone for about 10 months. The screen shows every
greasy mark fingerprints etc and the slide does seem a bit flimsy
I did intend this phone for my husband but it just feels as if it
could break easily and he is always dropping his so I kept it for
myself. I am still looking for one that bounces for my husband :-)
The battery on this phone lasts at for at least 5 days, which is
very good. The volume on the phone is great = no missing any calls.
The alarm can be a problem - if I am setting it for just one day
rather than my normal daily alarm, you have to remember to put in
the day of the week for the alarm to go off. My phone also switches
itself off when I am driving (if I leave it in the centre console)
especially on bumpy roads, which isn't a bad thing when driving
but to get it to work again I have to take the back cover off take
the battery out and then put them back in again. but all in all
this is a great phone Rating:

Yes the Samsung Steel does not have a flash which can be inconvenient
but the battery life is fine. I probably charge mine every 3 days
but I do use the FM radio a lot. Otherwise, the phone is attractive
and has many great features such as the camera which is good at
3.2 megapixels. At first, the menu was bright colours and looked
quite childish but you can change that to whatever suits you. I
chose black as I thought it looked better with the rest of the phone.
Overall, I have had this phone Christmas and I have had no problems
with it at all. This is a good phone to buy if you want something
sleek, simple, isn't touchscreen operated and has a lot of cool

I bought this phone mainly because I had read that it was rated
highly as an internet phone. However,I can usually only get onto
the net on this phone in about 1 attempt out of 10 - most of the
time I just get an onscreen message saying 'invalid response'. As
I am in my 14 day grace period, I am considering sending the phone
back.It is also worth noting if you are looking for a good camera
phone, this is not the best. The photos in most cases tend to be
blurred even with a steady hand and there is no flash. As mentioned
in previous reviews, the battery life is also poor(absolute max
you can get by without charging is 2 days) and there are no texting
emoticons. On the plus side, it is sleek and stylish to look at
and reasonably priced. I have had no problems whatsoever calling

Firstly, my main phone usage is sending texts. The space bar on
this is far right (Nokia is usually central) of the keypad. If you
are left handed that is perfect, but being right handed you have
to really bend your thumb to get to the spacebar that is not only
