Samsung
S400i Review
Phone
rating:
The
Samsung S400i is one of the first of a new generation of phones
called i-mode phones. i-mode makes it easy to access the web and
use e-mail from a mobile phone. To start i-mode, you press the special
"i" button on the phone. You can then access a range of
websites that have been specially designed for i-mode and have been
optimised for viewing on the phone's display. i-mode sites include
many of the most popular websites such as ebay, sports, news and
games websites. You can also send and receive email using the i-mode
email system, "i-mail". Initially i-mode is available
exclusively on O2, and you can get
a list of i-mode websites here - the list is suprisingly large
even at launch. i-mode is a replacement for WAP and is much, much
better. At last, the system that has been in place in Japan for
years is now available in the UK! Note that i-mode is not the same
as 3G - 3G is faster, but i-mode has the benefit of operating on
current 2G networks with better reception and longer battery life.
The S400i is no longer available in the shops.
Instead you might consider the Samsung
E900 or Samsung
E900 Pink which is currently available from Dial-a-Phone. Check
out their Samsung
E900 deals.
The
Samsung S400i looks very similar to the best-selling Samsung
D500, except that it's smaller and lighter. It's a slide-up
design phone with a good keypad and a nice screen. However, it doesn't
have the features of the D500: there's no MP3 player, no expandable
memory, the camera is just VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels), and
it can only record short video clips (less than a minute). This
makes it expensive for what you get, especially since you have to
pay extra for the i-mode service. The Samsung
S500i seems like a better deal.
Judging
from the user reviews, many people seem to have been mis-sold this
phone as a music phone. You need to understand that this phone does
not have an MP3 player. However, if you read the user reviews below,
some people claim to have imported music files onto the phone and
been able to play them.
Features
of the Samsung S400i include:
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with flash
- Video camera
- Display: 262,000 colours
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, E-mail
- Downloadable Java games
- Photo phonebook
- GPRS, EDGE
- Connectivity: Bluetooth
- Memory: 13 Mbytes
- Vibration alert
- Triband
- Size: 91 x 45 x 21 mm
- Weight: 88g
- Talktime: 3 hours
- Battery standby: 150 hours

Well believe it or not i only use this phone for the i-mode browser
(and calls ofcourse) which is what this phone was designed for.
i-mode is definitely quicker and easier than standard wap and if
you dont want an expensive techy phone that has 3G or wifi than
this is just perfect for accessing your regular sites on a regular
phone. Display is fantastic and the phone itself is very compact.
I believe you can get the D500 for the same price if camera or mp3
is your thing.

i am so disappointed wiv this phone. i thought that it would be
amazin, i would be able to recieve music from other people, but
it always says not allowed. And also, you have to have a legal apn
number to go on the internet, and that is bad. They should not have
a music file if you can't have any music to put on it. I hope no

Firstly before you buy this phone, you should read reviews like
this to make sure you don't make the same mistake i did. I had been
looking for a phone for a while, and found a simular phone before
spotting this one that could recive music, but didnt have bluetooth.
For £15 extra, i could purchase the s400i, and be able to recive
music, and have a bluetooth connection. So, i purchased the phone.
As im a teenager, and in highschool, the next day i went into school
asking people to send me music through bluetooth, and to my disapointment
i got the message 'Not alowed' Despite the fact that this phone
cannot recive music from other people, i've read reviews that say
it accepts certain file types, even though the file can't be too
large. I also find it weird that there's even a folder called 'music'
in the file manager. What i tend to do for the moment is use my
video camera on the phone to record songs, and set them as my tone.
YOU CAN NOT RECORD VOICES AND SET THEM AS YOUR TONE :l I think the
graphics are great, and the camera is also [not the best] great.
I have an iMac..quite a new one and it came with built in bluetooth
so i can easily send files from my phone to the computer, or even
the other way around. Video Camera - Not the best, the timing on
the video does varie, randomly..but im sure there's a reason which
could be something to do with the memorie. Overall - I do love this
phone alot, and if your that concerened about music, go buy yourself
an iPod !!

Hey, i'm a 6th form student at a school in north Wales and I've
had this phone for nearly a month now. I did rush to buy it (like
a teenager would do nyways) without making much research into phones
on the market but on the whole i'm fairly pleased with it, but it's
far from the best. Here's my fairly consise pov: There's no doubts
towards the fact that it's one good looking phone. It lies perfectly
in the palm of my hand and the sliding motion is so sexy! :p lol!
The screen is also excellent (262,000 colours), the clarity of icons
and so on are top notch! I also have no complaints regarding it's
ease of use. There are no complicated menus, even a goat could use
it. lol. The camera is OK, but you can't shoot movie much longer
than 30s which really aggrevates me, when it could definately do
more than this. So far, i havent had any problems with bluetooth
itself, but there are letdowns regarding the types of file it can
receive, which I will explain in a bit. Another fact that i nearly
forgot to mention was the calendar on the phone - which is really
handy and easy to use, but i sbose these kind of things are on all
phones these days arent they!! Now, to the letdowns, and quite frankly,
there are quite a few of them. Firstly, the internal memory is pretty
small, only 13MB, which will definately cause problems in future
as there is no memory card slot. Another problem is that i cannot
receive mp3 or wav files from my friends via bluetooth, but i guess
i should have been more careful when choosing my phone to realise
there isnt an mp3 player on it (but i dont really care cos i own
the smallest mp3 player on the world, which is fantastic!). Back
to the phone then; It also really annoys me that i cant use 'amr'
files as a ringtone but I can use a video as one (how thick is that??!)
As i draw to a conclusion, i find it hard to think of any more things
BUT there is one more thing. I would NOT spend £100 on this phone,
if you are plannig to buy one, i suggest you don't, but the decision
is entirely up to you in the end. Go for a Sony ericsson K750i or
w700i/800i, they're much better, only for a few quid extra! Thanks
for reading my review!

Anyone who wants to put music on this phone listen very very carefully
lol, You need to go out and buy a Blue Tooth Dongle for about £20-£25.
download itunes, its a free download off the net, once its installed,
open it and click on Edit then click on Preferences then click on
Advanced, the thing with the phone is you can't download any song
that larger than 300kb so you have to do this to make it smaller.
after you've clicked on Advanced click on Importing click on the
down arrow next to Setting and change it to custom. Setting are
Stereo Bit Rate: 16kbps, Sample Rate: 44.100kHz, Channels: Mono,
then click on Ok then OK again. Once you've done that click on File
and click on Add File to Library once the song is in itunes right
click on it and click on Convert Selection to AAC once its converted
copy the file to your Blue Tooth Shared File and then you can Download
it to your phone, Enjoy, mint phone, recommend it to anyone if you
buy the Blue Tooth Dongle and have a bit of t ime :)

Basically you get what you pay for with this phone, for those of
us with any common sense you check out websites like this one to
see what you are buying, so for all you people that are complaining
about putting music onto this phone, you are fools! And there is
a way to do it using a usb bluetooth connector and an audio conversion
kit (which is free to download!), the phone may not play mp3 but
it does play amr, m4a and aac files! For one hundred pounds i consider
this to be a deal! If you want the features of the d500,d600 then
pay the extra and buy one of these! what do you expect for a cheap
phone! I personally am very pleased with this phone, i can make
AND receive calls on it, i can even text on it! If i want to listen
to music i turn my iPod on simple as that! I would recommend this
phone to anyone who wants a new phone! Peace out

it new from Woolworths and it didn't even come with a data cable,
how am I supposed to put anything on it? It's just ridiculous. But
the camera quality is good, and I like the flash, but the video
is poo! If you move it quickly or if it films something moving quickly,
it stops videoing. The glossy finish gets easily scratched and the
i mode browser isn't very good. It doesn't load pictures well, and

I have owned the S400i for about 1 week now. So far I am impressed,
I think the camera quality is quite good as is the video camera
(its not brilliant, but I knew that b4 I bought it, otherwise I
would have bought the S500i which has a 1.3 megapixel camera compared
to the S400i's VGA (0.3 megapixel) camera). The features of this
phone are quite good also, even though it doesnt have an mp3 player
it doesnt bother me as it plays .aac/.aac+/.m4a instead. Im using
.aac (Advanced Audio Code) for my music and the quality is just
as good as mp3 with the advantage of a smaller file size which means
you fit more on. Aswell as this iTunes will convert your mp3 to
.aac quite easily so its no bother using .aac. I have to admit though
I am not completely happy with the phone. The reasons for this are:
1. The max file size the phone will accept through bluetooth is
only 500kb, which can be a problem when sending .3gp video files.
Im not sure if this is just with bluetooth, as I havent been able
to find USB data cable for sale. Also there is only 13MB memory
with no option for expansion. 2. You cannot send java games to your
phone from PC via bluetooth as this is an imode phone. Which means
it doesnt use standard java apps, instead it uses java doja (or
something like that) which can only be obtained from an imode site
by an imode enabled phone. Overall this is a good all round phone
which does whats its supposed to do, and does it well. It looks
great also!

nice lightweight phone with easy sliding action. had a few problems
with imode at first, had to get o2 to activate my sim (same one
i had for years) to be able to use imode. figured out how to get
on ebay after reading book, in imode-menu-shopping-ebay, it brings
up a compatible version which is quite easy to use. if trying to
connect to internet sites by typing in address it tells you page
is too big. to put passwords in use button to change from T9/123
to ABAB, and you can see the characters before they change to [****].
i hope the list of sites using i mode increases but many of them
require monthly subscriptions. screen is clear and i altered my
shortcuts to make phonebook one click etc. well laid out and camera
good and simple to use, i can email small pictures to phone from
my pc, still trying so sort out how to send sound files though.
phone is lacking a few features that can be found in other phones

This phone isnt as bad as people are making it out to be. Ye just
don't know how to use the thing. Dont bother with mp3s and use aac
instead. there seems to be a limit to the size of the files (0.5Mb)that
the phone accepts over bluetooth so shove the quality right down
and you'll fit at least 2 mins of audio. Thats if you buy a phone
to listen to music....???? Overall this phone is nice and easy to
use, it actually dials etc and the camera works which is fine with
me but my only gripe is that when you want to enter a recipient
for a message from yor phonebook it takes about 3 clicks too many.

far it seems like a very nice phone. It's nice and light, the screen
is clear and the interface is pretty simple. I really don't care
about MP3 or the camera: anyone who seriously cares about that kind
of thing should just buy an iPod or a Canon, no phone on the market
is going to come close to that level of quality. My only concern
is that the slide action is a bit weak, so it feels a bit wobbly
when closed. Apart from that, very nice.

Great little compact phone...slides really well. Don't know why
everyone is going on about no mp3 - whats an ipod for? Had a bit

Knocking a star off because of the really short time you can video
for. Bluetooth is good, but dont keep it on too long or it will
sap your memory. Buttons are easy to use, screen is clear and bright.
Especially like different coloured numbers when putting in a number!
Camera is good, especially impressed with the flash, and you can
put frames onto your pictures and special effects such as negative
and sepia onto them. Wondering why it has a headphone hole when
you can't play mp3's but still.... I think everyone needs to give
this phone a break, its great for people who aren't looking for
millions of gadgets, and just want a phone with camera/video/bluetooth

I just got one of these today. Things I must have in a phone : -sms
-calls -bluetooth or infrared The latter is for transferring and
backup up contacts, sms, pictures, sounds, etc. Features I consider
a plus -any kind of half decent camera -can play any audio as a
message or ring tone(mp3/4, aac, etc) -other stuffi don't need but
which could be cool. This phone scores high on everything so far
as i can see, EXCEPT bluetooth ! Camera is good. Video is good.
-these two for a phone, if you want great in this arean, buy a camera,
not a phone :) I -love- the ability to play mp4/aac as a ring tone
! MP3 does not appear to work, at least I can't send such files
over bluetooth. The menu is funky. Imode looks interesting, but
it's menus are slow to react. Aslo, closing the flip for everything
else cancels the operation, no so with i-mode. So if you don't cancel
imode before you close the phone and put it in your pocket, your
pocket could send emails to who knows :) Apart from sending files,
and copying files from the phone to the pc without any special software,
the most basic of features that I would consider the main reason
for bluetooth is abismal!!! I can send individual contacts via bluetooth,
sometimes it works. Trying to send a group never works. I have a
palm pilot, and i have all my contacts there. My last phone was
a sony ericsson t630 and i could send keep it in sync easily, sending
individual numbers that were new or changed, or if i hadn't updated
the phone in a while, i would wipe the phone contact and re-send
them from the palm "all at once". Such a simple easy thing yet so
useful. Now this won't work for the samsung, it has an issue with
getting more than a single contact at a time, and it also has issue
with some contacts, where the palm says 'work' the phone says 'office'
and won't accept cards with 'work' entries :( So, not wanting to
manually enter 600+ numbers and titles and company info and email
addresses etc, I am tearing my hair out trying to find something
that will do the job. You would think they'd have an application
online that could do this quickly and easily ? Wrong! The site samsung.com
has software, but no help and no articles that i could find. The
site samsungmobile.com doesn't even list this model !! I downloaded
the PIM software(v2.0, as specified when i input the phone model
on samsung.com), it's windows only so just as well i still get a
free XP system with my new pc's. It wouldn't connect through bluetooth.
I then downloaded some WIDESYNC software. This will work only with
MS Outlook!! I'm not going to pay $$$ for MS Office just to put
numbers on the bloody phone! But I got a hold of Office 2003 pro
on a friends machine, latest XP version and everything up to date.
Did not work. So at the minute i'm downloading pim software v3.0,
it's for the D800, but i'm thinking hey, it may just work. I am
really pd off. This is such a simple basic thing to want to do.
If anybody from SAMSUNG reads this, TAKE NOTE: I bought a new phone,
it's 2006 so it's likely I already have a phone and lots of friends
with phones, so I'm going to want to copy over the numbers that
i keep for them. It should be quick and easy, like with the siemens
and nokia and sony ericsson [and other but thats all I've experience
with]. Even my phones of 3+ years ago could do this fine with IR.
Why you these people made it so damn hard ! ??? Such a rant. Apols.
If you don't have a lot of numbers to transfer or anything else
of much interest to do with bluetooh, its looking like a great phone.
Otherwise, stear well clear of it ! Because, imo, this is such a
basic facility to have, I have decided to give this model a very
low rating, is that fair ?

using a Nokia 6230 I came use to having decent technological items
that were maybe not the best on the market, but were easy to use,
and worked steadily. but for a phone like the s400i built up in
the media so much by o2 and samsung, you have to wonder, am I using
the same phone as them? dont get me wrong, the phone has a brilliant
exterior, but what ever happened to inside the phone? video - only
lasts for 20 seconds, then cuts off and in the process of cutting,
freezes for 10 seconds. Bluetooth - can only send pictures, no videos
or mp3. mp3s - cant get them. i mode - cant use anything bcus u
have 2 subscribe to websites for 3pound each. profiles - only 2
profiles, loud and silent. ringtones - only 10 and very low. if

I love the design. If your previous phone is a Nokia and use T9
for texting then the T9 implementation will take some time to get
used to, as it usees the now-standard key placement of # for space,
and 0 for changeword instead of the other way around. My biggest
problem to date? The internet mode (i-mode) is currently free. From
the end of March here, it will be a billable service, whether you
use it or not. That kills it, imho - but since I did not buy it
for that, I'll survive. Also, as it's so new, O2, and samsung's
own samsungmobile.com do not yet recognize the phone (a bit dumb,
since the phone is in production for some time now). Because of
this, and most operator's lack of understanding in the Java platform
you'll have a problem getting games and ringtones from them, so
you will need to rely on Samsungmobile.com for any extra's. A temporary
issue, but actually the main reason I give it 3/5.

drawbacks are it's lack of memory - why only 13K when most of Samsung's

It's a funky little phone - and looks way better than the other
Samsung slidey phones out at the minute. I thought it was a problem
with bluetooth when I tried to transfer mp3s to the phone from the
PC, but, having spoken with Samsung support, mp3s can't be transferred.
Dunno why, but it doesn't have to stop you. The phone will accept
ACC files and mp4, so just a small download of a converting program,
and you can transfer the tune! Doesn't take any time at all!! Also,
the phone sends MMS messages through the IMode email/imail facility
- go into the imail bit and you'll see "create imail" then underneath
"create i-mms" - simple! The screen's sharp and doesn't seem to
be as prone to scratches as the d600/500. Imode is funky - the official
imode sites are shown in the main menu, but search on the net and
find the addresses for the unofficial sites, where you can download
freebies. All in all - well pleased with this phone. Can't fault
it!!!

For some stupid reason everyone seems to think this is S500i's update.
There's a reason this is called S400i and not S600i. This is an
entry level phone for O2's i-mode service and comes with all the
essential features: camera/video, mp3, bluetooth...If u want something
more advanced get the S500i or Z320i but for something simple and
stylish this is a pretty good device to make calls and browse i-mode
sites.

Just received my new phone which looks good, but first impressions
and all that. It feels like every time I touch my phone I could
break it. It’s very small and compact which is good but you
wouldn't want to drop it more than once. The I mode is good however
if you want to download anything there's changes galore and everything
I’ve downloaded like wallpapers and real tones wont work on
this handset. Very disappointed and think it's time to go back to
Nokia

samsung recently released i-mode which is much improved faster internet
service that gives acces to email, and many other services such
as online banking and cinema tickets. I Mode also gives you access
to thousands of new wap sites and is exclusive to O2. The s400i
is samsung's follow-up to the D500i and S500i. the handset is supposedly
going to continue the success of the popular d600-like desing. the
phone is tiny, only 88g and is smaller than the d500. the design
and layout of the buttons is simular to the s500i. the main features
of this phone are: - sleek slinder design with modern black finish
- VGA camera with snapshot facility and flash - mp3 player - video
download, recording and playback - i mode email and wap browsing
- 65k tft colour screen - advanced GPRS browser - Tri band - PC
compatible so from a glance this phone looks really good but there
are some major disappointment such as the lack of memory card slot,
no megapixel camera - no real tones only polyphonic tones - no headset
(handsfree) provided although the phone is ok it standard price
in O2 shops is £129.99 and for this price you aren't really getting
value for money. if you want a stylish phone go for motorola l7
(slvr) which is about same price as s400i. if you want good value
for money excellent features etc. go for sony ericsson w550i or
Nokia 6230i which are both £149.99 from O2 and most retailers. or
if you have the money go for the Samsung S500i imode which is an
updated version of the e720 and features imode. it offers excellent
mega pixel camera with flash, bluetooth (new version), memory card
slot etc. this can be bought for bout £200 in o2 shops or £189.99
from the O2 website with a free bluetooth headset.
