Samsung F480 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The Samsung F480 Tocco is a high-spec touchscreen phone that offers fantastic features in a sexy ultraslim package. The features include a 5 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio, ultra-fast 3G web browsing and just about the most memory we've seen in a mobile phone! If the screen had been a bit larger we'd have given it 5 stars.
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Dialaphone.

Samsung are on a roll with touchscreen phones in 2008. First the Armani, then the F490 Nerva, now the F480 Tocco (Tocco comes from the Italian word for "touch".) Now the Armani was a bit of a flop, but the F480 is a great phone, and so the question is, what's the difference between the F480 and the F490 and which is better? (OK, so that was two questions.)

On the face of it, these are two very similar phones. They both have a touchscreen user interface using the "award-winning" Croix UI, with haptics (vibration) for tactile feedback. Both are good looking phones - the F480 has a brushed metal finish and is supplied with a leather case to help protect it from scratches. The F480 has a conventional QVGA resolution screen instead of the extra long screen used by the F490. Losing screen resolution is bad news for touchscreen phones, and the Tocco's screen is just 2.8 inches (the F490 has a 3.2 inch screen.) Both are ultraslim phones, with the F480 being a tiny bit thinner at an incredible 11.6mm.

The touchscreen interface works well in both phones. Most people seem to have no problems using the phones, although fast texting can be a bit of a mission. Both have great cameras. The camera on the F480 is very similar to the one on the F490 - 5 megapixels with autofocus, digital zoom and LED flash. The F480 introduces a new gee-whiz feature called "Smile Shot". According to Samsung, "Smile Shot is able to identify when the subject is smiling and automatically takes a picture." Reading that made us smile, but we're probably being too cynical. Seriously though, we actually believe that the more "stuff" that camera phones introduce, the harder it is for people to use them effectively. Still, the Tocco can take good pictures, but as with all camera phones don't expect to become David Bailey with this thing.

The Tocco has a good music player (as you'd expect) that can play most file formats and has the advantage over the F490 of having an FM radio included. We're also delighted to see the huge amount of memory supplied: 240 Mbytes of internal memory, plus the option to add up to 8 Gbytes of microSD memory. That's enough to store thousands of songs. We like it. On the music front, the Tocco also introduces a feature called Shazam (no, seriously) that acts like Sony Ericsson's TrackID™ service and can identify a song that you're listening to.

Another benefit that the Tocco has over the F490 is a souped-up 3G connection. The 3G implementation uses HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps, enabling download speeds faster than most home broadband connections. In fact the Tocco is a brilliant platform for the mobile internet, with its big touchscreen and dedicated Google application.

So to answer the question: what's the difference between the F480 and the F490? The F480 has better features (FM radio, faster 3G, more memory) but the F490 has a bigger screen. Which is better? That's tricky to answer and it's really frustrating that Samsung just didn't release one phone with a big screen and all the features. Let's answer the question this way: the LG Viewty (but only just!)

To Ross. I didn't say the FONT of the names was too small! I said that you cannot put LONG names in, they need to be TRUNCATED, and by that I don't even actually mean long names but normal names (you'll see). I've had the N95 now and the difference is chalk and cheese. Don't get me wrong, I think the Tocco is really nicely designed, but I'm sure if I had it for a few months I'd end up running it over !! (example, the N95, when adding contacts you can edit the labels, add new labels, and have EXTREMELY long names, no problem. You can also put the N95 into a 3D Wide Sound (can't remember the name exactly, but wife's is set up like that and it makes the N95 the loudest ringing tone of ALL phones). Also, the camera has to be seen, it's like walking around with a standalone camera, it's that good. I think all reviewers should actually list how long they've been using their phones before reviewing them (I tried both the Tocco and the N95 for 1 full week each).

Let me start by saying i was slightly dubious about this phone from one or two of the negative reviews but i went for it anyway and im so glad i did. this is by far the best phone i have owned (and ive had a lot) The touchscreen is fantastic i was concerned about the txting but after a couple of days i got the hang of it, the features are awesome especially the camera. Call volume is fine, the contacts names are also fine. I would highly recommend this phone as i believe it is the best out there.

Managed to get the first one of these on the island, and all I can say is WOW! What a phone! The touchscreen is ridculously responsive, the camera is excellent, and the layout is classy, yet simple to use. The other thing I can say is that, these people who have trouble with the in call volume need their ears tested! The volume is excellent!! They also need their eyes tested if they think the contacts name is too small! To sum up, if you want something a bit different, classy, and something which stands out in the crowd, this is the phone for you! An excellent buy, and would not change for any other mobile!!

Swapped my Tocco for a N95 and feel like I've been released from Prison ! The N95 just gets on with the job, the software on it is awesome. The Tocco, after a while, does hurt your index finger (all that screen tapping) and when you go to a N95 you realise how bad a touch screen is for your digit. I'm almost of the opinion (maybe a bit premature) that Touch screen's won't be a phone feature for too long, as it just seems (judging from the N95) that the usual keypad for texting/inputing numbers etc is the only sensible way on a phone. The N95's camera is light years ahead of the Samsung's (the latter's 'lag' was what was most noticable). I get the impression that most of the reviewers on here extolling the virtues of the Tocco have only had the phone for a few hours ! So to sum up what's poor about the Tocco; 1) Caller volume not loud enough, 2) Caller speach quality poor, 3) Phone has cut out whilst on calls for no reason 4) Contact Name field not long nearly long enough 5) Touch Screen will irritate (maybe even damage digit) after about a week (let alone after an 18month contract !) 6) Camera may be 5m, but serious camera lag. 7) Software not a patch on Nokia's N95.

This Tocco's definitely have issues !! 1) The in-call volume is simply not loud enough (confirmed with other reviewers saying the same). 2) I had a call cut out for no reason with the other person having to call me back, wondering what happened. Well, having investigated this on the Internet, it seems others have had this happen as well. 3) Not convinced that the photo quality is up there with the N95 (others have said they too have images quality problems when putting onto PC). 4) Finally, the Contacts name is RIDICULOUSLY too SMALL. Even a normal name needs to be truncated, which doesn't make any sense as there is space on the screen. Very disappointing. Therefore, I'm taking this back to Vodafone and will be going for an N95. At least it'll work as a Phone (very loud) and that's it's primary purpose for me. Nice phone styling (can't stop playing with it nor holding it!). Shame, but I certainly can't live with this phone cutting out and poor caller voice quality.

UPDATE As Alan Sugar may say, "with regret, you're fired" sadly my SECOND Tocca is being returned tomorrow and being replaced with an SE C902. Reason? The camera, all seemed well until the pictures were downloaded onto the PC. There it was clear that pics are very poor, and had a strange "banding" with pictures appearing to have different exposures on the horizontel or vertical plane. The phone was replaced and the same is true of the replacement. Very sad because I'll stand by everything else I said in earlier review, a superb phone and ideal for people with visual difficulties. Such a shame the camera has spoile it. On the basis of the camera (my old 750i turned out better shots) I am downgrading to 3 stars

I bought this phone yesterday, my wife having bought the Nokia N95 last week. I was really tempted by the N95 only because of the spec, but I really didn't like the ergonomics. I fell in love with the Tocco but after a day, I'm now not too happy about one aspect, the volume level on the hearing. It's just not loud enough. I've searched the internet and looked to see if anyone else is complaining about this as well, and so far it's only me !! So maybe I have a faulty phone. I've not spoken to too many people (3-4) but when I have it's been murder trying to hear them. Yes I have turned it up to full in Profiles, but it's still not good enough. Any one else have the same thoughts ?? Otherwise, I really like the phone/styling.

What can I say that has not been said before, I still wonder why it has a rating of 4 stars, a penalty for not having a big screen - not that much of a deal. I was really skeptical in getting this phone. A long time user of Nokia and SE with a samsung never in frame. On top of this a touch screen phone.....all I can say I was blown away with the QUALITY of the phone, until now I have always gone for phones which look good but not hung on features - Nokia 8800, Sirocco, Nkoia 8600 Luna but I must say I wanted to go for looks and features and this phone does just that - It is a recommended buy, am of to play with my new toy!!!Will review again once I have played with it!!

Have had my Tocco a week now having returned the LG secret I originally had on upgrade. So after a week, what do I think of it.... Superb!! This is probably the best phone I've ever had. The build quality and feel are spot on, I'd say every bit as good as the Secret (with the possible exception of the tempered glass). However its the user interface thats blown me away. Its' so quick and easy to use, I'm even texting faster now than with my K800! I felt the Secret was sometimes tricky to use as the combination of slide/touch seemed to conflict with each other in certain situations. Best of all imao is web browsing. Aside from the iphone, this is the best mobile I've seen for web browsing. Scrolling arund/zooming by just moving your finger over the screen is superb. It makes surfing so simple. Downsides, only real one I can think of is the lack of an accelerometer. It's not a huge one, as flipping the screen is still pretty qick with a touch of the scree. However it does seem a glaring ommision considering the phones obvious iphone pretences. Maybe the video too could be better, tho to be honest, I doubt I'd use it, even if it was fantastic. Also maybe tempered glass would have been good to make sure the fantastic screen stays scratch free. Overall though, I'd recommend this phone to everyone. Overall much better than the Secret imao. I'm only not giving it five stars due to the lack of accelerometer (and I'm being picky)!!!

Recently got this phone and then sent it back. It looks great, is super sexy and has some really good features. Unfortunately Im a huge texter and although its not too bad to text with it isnt brilliant. Far too easy to press the wrong button and can be frustrating, also for someone who can text whole messages without looking, a touch screen phone makes this impossible. In a nutshell...if i didnt text i would have kept this phone...

Wow! what a top clas phone this is, having been a SE user for umpteen years now, I decided to try something a little bit different. The camera on this phone is excellent, up there with my old K800i and we all know how good the camera is on that phone. But unfortunately I'm one of the few that the pic appears slightly blurred on screen (after taking the shot but fine on PC), it can be a little bit off putting and I've probably deleted more pics than I should've done, but having now just added another 2gig i'll delete them from the PC if they are no good. Sound quality is decent, not exactly Ipod quality, but what does one expect, it's a PHONE. Texts are a doddle and as quick as any std btn phone I've used. If you are after a touch screen phone then this little beauty is definately worth a shot, I know I'm very impressed with it. 5*

I think the samsung tocco is a superb phone with some really clever features.! My last phones were sony ericcsson w880i & w800i and its took a while to get used to the new samsung user interface, but its great! & i just cant put the phone down! ive added a 2gb micro sd card, which i got for £6.50 off of play.com (free delivery) which is great & plenty of space for all your music, but the tocco comes with 240mb memory built in which is superb for a phone.!!The camera takes great pics once you fiddle aroud & get the right settings ( ppl are saying on some forums the camera is rubbish) come on guys you have to be patient and check out the settings availible first! its not just a ...."take it out the box, point & shoot & get amazing 5mp pics," there are 5mp digi cams ive used that are not as good as the tocco pics...ive yet to download my pics onto a pc, but im told they look blurry on the fone (not mines) then look great on pc,?? maybe its just some models that have this issue or as i said the folk just arent using the correct settings. The music is really crisp & clear on the loud speaker & the headphones (which i was surprised about because im used to the excellent sony ericsson ear bud ear phones) i thought it would take ages to get used to text`n on this phone but ive had it 2 days & im txt`n just as fast as my w880i,it would be good to be able to change start up & shut down screens as mines is SE funclub. I love the way you can just drag & drop whatever you want on to the screen from the sidebar, you can have the widget displayed on the side of the screen or hidden, its just up to you, it comes with a cool leather flip screen protector that fits on the back like a battery cover & the leather flap covers the screen....funky ;-), ive not seen any advertising for this phone tho which is surprising as it says on the net theres a 3.5m ad campaign...and sony ericsson have there new c902 advert out & lg with their secret, so i wonder when or if the tocco will hit our screens!! i would advise anyone to get this phone, its a bit on the expensive side sim free but i got mines free on t-mobile as an upgrade..i hope this review has helped anyone who is considering geting this phone make up their minds, i just got the phone without reading revies & im glad i did...only gripe i have is batery life but then again i played around with it constant for 12 hrs yesterday, bluetooth`n, txt`n, only one 10 min call tho & just playing around with the widgets, it lasted all day yest but i switched it off about 1am & turned it back on this morning at 11am & the battery went dead at 5pm today (maybe that aint so bad & im just looking for "fault". Oh & one more thing...plz make games for this fone coz there is none out there :-( it would be great using the touch screen to control games....ok i think iv`e went on a bit here, lol, i just want to let others know how good this phone is...so its gettin the 5 STARS :-))

I got the Tocco a couple of weeks ago and was blown over by how responsive it was to the touch, the many features, the bright vibrant colours etc. i could go on bigging up this phone except for one small thing, the sound quality when makign a call is dire! All I ever said to people was pardon, sorry cant hear you, it got beyond a joke. Sent it back, tried another, same problem. i ended up getting a SE C902 instead. I miss the Tocco, it's an awesome bit of kit, but as someone else has said in this review, whats the point of having all these wonderful features if you can't use it for it's foremost intended purpose..as a phone!

This is truly a very sexy phone - I love it. I have converted from Sony Ericsson phones which I have had for the past three upgrades. The touch screen is great and I don't have any problem texting (in fact I can text faster than on standard mobile phone keys). If you set up predictive text in messaging it will remain as the default until you change it, so I can't understand some of the earlier comments about this. The vibration feature is very cool and the drag and drop widgets are innovative and great to play with - I can't put this phone down!! Okay, I do have a couple of small gripes - 1. You can't have any screensavers or themes to set to the phone and 2. When I text I can't insert animation icons or smileys etc into the message. Apart from that I love it!!

I have had this phone for 5 days now, and it deserves the positive reviews it is getting. I have been a faithful SE fan and had been looking forward to upgrading my K800i to the new C902. However, I am partially sighted and the menus on the C902 are even smaller than my K800i rendering it useless for me. So, on to the F480, the phone is superb, very nicely made, call quality is very good and ring tone and earpiece volumes more than adequate (PROVIDED) you adjust them in the profiles. The menu system fonts are larger than most current mobiles, and text messages and Internet fonts can be zoomed to a very large size, ideal for people with visual disabilities, well done Samsung! Text messaging, the process takes a little getting used to, I found using my index finger rather than thumb made it easier, and it is pretty easy to access ABC and T9 txt. Listening to mp3s through the standard earphone is better than my partners ITouch! Camera quality is very good, once again provided you adjust everything to the maximum resolutions. The length of videos can also be adjusted, as default; it is set for sending via MMS. Mobile Internet speeds are also very fast indeed, plus the benefit of being able to zoom in or out on the pages. The only problems experienced so far are that I tried to install Operamini browser without success, and also tried to download a game, which also froze. Samsung provide two battery covers for the phone, one in the brushed metal finish, and another leather "wallet". I fitted the latter and it is very convenient, looks good and provides great protection for the phone and screen, one again, great design. My only criticism, is battery life, not what I am used to from Sony, but still seems to have lasted about 3 days so far, with lots of fiddling and exploring. I suppose with the size of the screen, shorter life is to be expected. As one or two other reviewers have said, I am also very picky, and research everything I buy, the Tocca has not disappointed and I would recommend you take a look at it.

I've had this phone a week in replacement for two U900 Souls which were simply rubbish. Was very apprehensive about getting another Samsung but I have to say that I really like this phone. It's small and light with a fabulous design and a clear, bright screen. It's got all the features that I'm interested in and the high speed internet is very noticeable. Skype's download for the D900 seems to work fine on the phone, the battery life is pretty good and, once you get used to it, the touch screen is cool. Texting does take getting used to - it just feels very strange at first. All in all, I'm very happy with this phone and highly recommend it.

Just got the phone, liking it so far. The only major problem im having at the moment is trying to work out how to change the hold screen pictures (when you click the hold button at the top it goes through a nice selection of pictures about flowers and such). Is there any way to change these pictures?

Never having seen a touch screen phone before i took the plunge and bought one unseen. This phone has blown me away. It's just the right size and weight, the screen is easy to see (even without your specs) and the name is perfect as i can't leave it alone. (Tocco being Italian for touch) The screen is easy to see outdoors too and the ringtones are cool. It takes good photos and vidios too. This may not be a high tec review, i'm not a high tec woman, i'm just someone who feels lost without a phone and has fallen in love with the Tocco. Perfect.

Just got the phone - seems pretty good so far. Only one flaw/question. Default for texting is ABC. Is there any way to set the default to T9 predictive. It's very annoying having to change it for every text. Saying that, my old Samsung D500 had the same problem - very annoying. Also, pics taken indoors with a lot of light coming into the viewfinder, tend to turn a bit orange - any advice on stopping that?

I have been a loyal Sony Ericsson user for the last few years and loved their phones. However when it came time to upgrade this time i didnt fancy the problematic K850i so i hunted around and eventually decided on the tocco. I am so so glad i did. While i still dont think Samsungs menu system is quite as intuitive as SE's, it doesnt take away from what is a very very very good phone. The camera is excellent for a phone, the touch screen is superb, the internet is fast, call sound quality is very good even with the optional screen protector that you get in the box. It comes to something when the biggest thing i can find to moan about is that i can find no way of having a contacts photo pop up when they txt you, although you can when they call you. Its a very well built very good looking phone that i would reccomend to anyone. Battery life isnt fantastic but what can you expect when its got such a large touch screen? I am getting 2 days use between charges (although i am still playing with it alot).

A fantastic looking phone and really nice to use only for one problem and its a bit of a major one, the sound quality is truly awful I cannot hear what people are saying to me, this is not the first samsung phone I have had with this problem. I really thought with it being their latest phone it wouldn't suffer from this, they must fit the cheapest earpieces that they can possibly buy. Its going back today and im going to try another handset just incase it is faulty and if the new one is just as bad its back to sony ericsson for me there phones are of a far higher quality. It can have all the features in the world but if I can't make phone calls whats the point!???

Amazing phone, and very easy to use. I got mine last week on Orange and it has to rank as one of the best phones I've ever had. There are so many great features, and neat touches. For those of us that don't like, want or can't afford an iphone this is an excellent alternative - I highly recommend this phone. Well done Samsung!

The F480 doesn't run on croix as the review suggestsm and also is far better than the F490; which has problems playing vidoes and the interface sucks!! Buy this, it is the best phone I have seen in a long time. And, is 2.8 inches really that small? The 3.2 inch screen just makes the F490 stretched, and this phone is far better looking.

Got my Tocco yesterday. This was the fourth phone i've had in the past three weeks!!!! This is the best phone out of all of them (had to return the others due to faults - Nokia 95 ,terrible battery life! Continually crashing!, Viewty, with its superdupa camera which crashed whenever i tried to use it! HTC Touch Dual, very flimsy body!! and could never get a signal) FINALLY a phone that lives up to my expectations -Loving it! Love the innovative case/screen cover, very clever. I love my phone!!

I got the samsung tocco yesterday, and it is truly one of the best mobiles i have had (trust me i have had a lot). Some people may be put of by the touch sensitve screen, and yes it does take a bit of time getting used to it but it soon becomes really easy after a while of playing around with it , the screen is also very responsive, giving you that vibration feedback when you are using it. The widgets are great the only bad thing about them is that they are sometimes a bit too big on the 2.8" screen so you can only fit one or two on it, but that is all that you really need. The music player is excellent, playing most formats of music and it is easy to download to the phone via the software that is provided and has bags of memory to store them on. Another amazing feature is the camera, I had the samsung g600 before this and the camera on that was useless looking like more of a 2 that a 5 megapixle, however the tocco is like a top of the range camera on the market today, the face detection tool and the anti-shake comes in very handy too. The video is also excelent quality aswel, just make sure that you change the settings on it before-hand or you can only shoot for about 20s. Texting is becoming more easy every time i am on the phone, you just have to give it time for you to get used to it and then you will have no problem. I just cant believe that the phone was only give 4 stars on the review above, the 2.8" screen is just right making the phone look sleek and feeling good.

Got my Tocco this morning and i'm well impressed phone looks great and feels great. Sound quality when talking to someone and the volume of the ringtones is superb much better than the Soul which i sent back after 2 days. It fits well in the hand you have the choice of 2 battery covers one which includes a wallet front which protects the screen. Widgets are excellent touch screen very responsive you can increase the vibration feel to 5 so it gives good feedback when touched. Camera is fine and video quality could possibly be better but thats my only gripe. Texting takes time to get used to but had no problems and will soon get used to it. Overall I would recommend this phone to anyone thinking of getting it dont be put off with the touch screen this phone is class.

The phone is great, all standard samsung menus that im used too. Camera is great, better than my D900 so im happy with it, havent put on PC yet though. Has bluetooth, dont know whether u can voice automate it though as it doesnt come with a hands free device ( i have one from old samsung i can use). the Scrolling on the phone is easy to use just drag ur finger down to go down the list. The widgets are good fun but just a novelty factor, not that overly impressed by them! Looks very nice and the touch screen is very responsive, Texting is easy with two thumbs or holding it using one hand is just as quick! Basically i love this phone! Down side is rubbish ringtones, so will be downloading some new ones from PC shortly!

I got this today after my blackberry pearl finally gave up and died after a year and a half's long hard service. I looked at other phones in the O2 shop and I wanted a phone with 3g as I use the internet alot on my phone while researching on the move and at home where I use my laptop less and less and sit on the sofa browsing and reading. I like the viewty but it was too bulky and the scroll wheel was an idea made at the Samsung Xmas party. N95 - chunky monkey for Surallen wannabees. Iphone too expensive, no 3g, decent camera, Java etc. So I just started playing with the F480 in the 02 shop. Wow - everything the Iphone should have been and more. Big screen but pocketable, HSDPA, radio, 5M Camera, java and the internet is iphone Safari like. Fantastic! Get one

I recieved this phone today and I am so happy with it. I have to say I am a bit of a phone freak and also very fussy. When i first saw it in the 02 shop it was not my first choice as I thought it looked to much like an apple iphone wannabe. However the phone I did want was out of stock and I'm the type of person who wants it now so decided to go for the recommended samsung. I am quite a loyal fan of nokia and I've been blown away by this phone. I even had my acrylic nails removed to work it. It was worth it. The software is fantastic and also you can drag applications over from a retractable side menu bar and leave them on your screen if you wish. Just drag and drop and you can drag your photo album out to browse through amongst other things. I didn't find this out til I went on to a website with a demonstrational video. As its an extra and it had sneaked right past me whilst getting to know my phone. Writing a text is so easy. Fair enough you have to get used to the touch screen but that is just a problem worth facing. Now after an hour of playing I'm used to it. However , girls long nails are a no no. I tried to use it and it was not having any of it. The camera quality is excellent. One of the best I have ever had. My boyfriend got the nokia n95 today and i can see him secretly sulking wishing he had this one. Excellent memory capacity and sounds great too. Also a little thing it has nokia doesn't is when you have a text message it says who it is from before you open it. You can assign tones to people and Also your message alert can be a personal tone of your own downloads. Brilliant sexy sleek phone. That lives up to its looks. My best phone so far!!
