The
Samsung E800 features Samsung's new slide design, in common with
the D500. The slide motion is semi-automatic,
which means that a gentle push will make the slide mechanism open
and close automatically. The keypad is rather
small, and some people may find this to be a problem, especially
if you have larger than average hands.
The
E800 features 64-voice polyphonic ringtones and a 64,000 colour
display that is crisp and easy to see, even outdoors. With a VGA
camera (including flash), multimedia messaging and Java games, the
E800 certainly offers most features that you would expect.
The E800 also includes some advanced voice features
to help make conversations easier. The phone automatically senses
the volume of the background noise and will increase the volume
and clarity of the incoming call to make it more audible. The E800
is also the first phone in the world to incorporate Noise Cancellation
Functionality technology, which actually suppresses excess ambient
noise from around the person speaking so that the person receiving
a call can hear the caller loud and clear. The integrated speakerphone
incorporates a state-of-the-art echo cancellation technology and
incorporates both noise cancellation and voice clarity functions
to let you speak more freely on the fly or in the car.
One feature that is noticeable by its absence is
Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which one might expect in
a phone at this price.
We originally awarded the E800 4 stars, but following
persistent reports by users of a variety of problems (read the user
reviews below), we have downgraded it to 1 star. There are a number
of problems with the E800 - first there seem to be real problems
on the O2 network (and possibly with other networks, but to a lesser
extent) with the E800 dropping calls, shutting down in the middle
of calls and refusing to send or receive text messages. If you are
going to buy the E800 we would really recommend that you don't buy
it on O2, especially as O2 seem to be unwilling to acknowledge that
there is any kind of problem with the phone on their network. Secondly,
the E800 seems to be a lot less reliable than other Samsung phones,
with reports of it freezing, the screen breaking and other kinds
of hardware failures. We would recommend that you avoid the E800
and either go for the Samsung D500,
or if your budget doesn't allow for that, then choose one of Samsung's
clamshell phones such as the E600
or E330 instead.
Features of the Samsung E800 include:
65,536 colour TFT screen (128 x 160 pixels)
VGA camera (640 x 480 resolution) with digital
zoom, photo effects & frames and multishot feature (up to 15 pictures)

I had this phone 31st October and it has been nothing but problems.
Only 2 months after having it it went back to The Link and went
away for repair because it was constantly locking when the phone
was slid open... keypad exposed. This meant that I was kicked off
whatever I was doing. Typing a txt, playing a game, on WAP anything.
Not only that but my phone was switching on and off occasionally,
but without asking for my pin number. Also, no-one was recieving
txts I weas sending. I went way for a week for a 'repair'. Came
back and exactly the same was happening 3 days after it's return.
Only more frequently this time. Another problem I noticed was testing
was very slow. Also, I had my phone connected to the laptop via
Infared when all of a sudden it switched off. The "o2 Welcome"
screen with the bubble came up, but the bubble was just a blur of
colours, like a rainbow. Then a blank white screen came up. The
"Welcome Note" was a mass of colours. Then the main screen
came up with the "O2-UK, date and time" and that was a
rainbow blur underneath each letter/number - the blur was like a
shadow. The background was white. The only thing on the screen was
the network, date and time blurred. So, my mum contacted Samsung
themselves and they sent an envelope for it to be sent away yet
again. It came back 2 weeks later and after a while the problems
were appearing... more and more often. So, back to my place of purchase
I went on the 3rd March. I had it back again, 3 weeks later, and
I have had it for 3 hours and already people are having problems
getting my texts. I have had another phone for the 3 weeks mine
was away and I have not had a single problem sending texts. Tried
my sim in other phones and not a problem. It is the Samsung. DON'T
TOUCH THIS PHONE. IT'S A WASTE OF SPACE. 3 times it has been away
for repair, 3 different places and they have still not solved the
problems. I have had various different things done to it. Good luck
if you have one. I wouldn't recommend one. It looks nice, but thats
the only good thing about it. Rating:

for no reason at all. Then it startd cutting incomming calls off
when you answer them. now its refusing to send and receive texts
even though i have fill signal. The only way of getting them or
beng able to make calls is by turing the phone off and on again
or trying to connect to another service and then going back to vodafone.
Then i get loads of texts that have not ben received all day and
voice messages as they have gone straight to answerphone. now the

phone doesn't even ring at my end when making calls. I have been

I was going mental, but after reading all these comments I now know
I'm not. Maybe Samsung or O2 should read these comments on this

Positives 1. Small and light 2. Nice looking Negatives 1. If you
hate predictive text like i do you have to turn off T9 everytime
you send a message. The mobile doesnt save your settings. 2. If
you get a call during writing a text all your text message is lost
so you have to start again. 3. Poor ringtones, no normal tones are
included just rubbish drum and bss and wierd dog barking/singing
tones. 4. The phone doesnt ring and vibrate at the same time so
by the time the phone rings the call has ended. 5. Buggy software.
The phone turns itself off, crashes during calls, hangs up calls,
goes in and out of reception randomly, cuts the calls off on pickup,
the screen sometimes appears corrupted. 6. Infared is useless as
you cant send pictures or ringtones all you can do is receive. 7.
pictures cant be previewed very well. The software distorts the
image when it uses it as wallpaper. 8. GPRS/WAP is buggy and sometimes
doesnt work despite being setup with the correct settings. The only
good thing about this phone is its looks and cool slider function.
Nobody buys this phone for its features as the spec was only average
upon its release. The D500 is light years above this model. Rating:

to be complaining about: 1 To prevent phone going into standy mode
everytime u slide down, go the slide settings in phone settings
menu and select continue operation. 2 If u dont want to answer calls
by sliding the phone open then go to active slide in phone settings
menu and turn it off. 3 To activate silent mode press and hold #key.
To choose whether u want it to vibrate in silent mode go to quiet
mode in sound settings menu and turn it on/off. 4 To turn on vibration
for ringtones or messages go to incoming calls or messages in sound
settings menu and select alert type. 5 To turn off periodic message
alert tones for sms/mms messages go to messages in sound settings
menu, select sms/mms, select repetition and choose the once option.
6 To view missed calls and messages or the time in standy mode,
press and hold either volume key on left handside. 7 To record voice
memos, create new mms message, select sound and select record new.
To acess saved voices go to media box in fun box menu, select sounds
and select voices. 8 To use infared for sending and receiving pictures
and ringtones, download and install the program EasyStudio from
www.samsungmobile.com. If ur pc doesnt have infrared, use a cable.
9 To make photo capture more discreet, go to settings in camera
menu, select shutter sound, select tones 1,2 or 3 and change keypad
volume to 1. 10 If ur phone does not make or receive calls and you
are certain u know how to use a phone then it is not because the
manufacturers designed it that way but because ur phone is in urgent
need of a replacement. Thank you. Rating:

the graphics freeze and turns itself off. It's been sent away for

advised there is not a manufacturers fault but due to misuse I have
caused the problem, most probably by subnerging the phone in water!
I find it highly suspicious that O2 advise that if you phone can't

The mobile cuts out mid way through calls - thats if I'm lucky enough
to be able to answer the call in the 1st place. The phone completely
freezes, then switches itself off and then resets causing me to
lose all my WAP and MMS settings - very annoying!! The majority
of the time I am unable to send any text messages, and recently
the colours on the screen have started to merge followed by the
phone switching itself off! I originally thought it was a problem

Was sold on the firm sliding action but very disappointed with functions
and intuitiveness: 1. Incoming calls can be answered by sliding
out, which is what I like, but the Answer soft key cannot be disabled.
This means that while fishing out the phone from pocket, can accidentally
answer the incoming call before we can see who is calling. 2. No
traditional ring tone - very annoying to have music coming out from
my pocket. Practically everywhere you go you hear the first few
bars of some music coming from someone's pocket, bag, etc. Fun to
some, but not to all. 3. The association of keypad numbers to commands
in the menu is very annoying. For instance, to find a phonebook
entry, I press the phonebook button. If I press a letter, it should
quick search to the record but instead the keypad is mapped to 1-find
name, 2-add entry and so on. So the phone is definitely for people
who has little else to do. 4. The phonebook display cannot be switched
between phone and SIM. So if you have a SIM card with all your contacts
set up, you use that card in E800C, and you want to add more numbers
to some names (office no., mobile no., etc to John, say), you need
to do a copy all to the phone phonebook, then add more details.
However, when you open the phonebook, BOTH the SIM and phone phonebook
are shown together, making it hell to find the entry you want, unless,
of course, you still have nothing else to do but fiddle with a phone.
They should allow one to set the phonebook display to take only
from, say, the phone phonebook. Samsung's solution to this? Erase
all your SIM card entries! Brilliant! That is fine if all we have
is an E800C. But what if you have more than one phone? Erasing SIM
entries is stupid, I think. As far as functionality and user-friendliness
are concerned, the E800C has a long, long way to go and for people
with more important things to do, the E800C can be a neat-looking
piece of junk. Rating:

a decent phone. First the speaker stops working, i get it back and
then the keys stop working. I'm doing nothing to affect this as
I am always super careful with my phone and this being expensive
I was even more careful. As a result I am having to change this,
going back to trusty Nokia's i think, wouldnt give Samsung anymore

I've had this phone since August 2004 and I still love it. The most
obvious plus-point is the sleek, sexy design with the smooth slide-down.
You don't even have to slide the phone apart to use most of the
functions. The camera is really good quality (although not quite
as good as the e700). I was so impressed with the many camera settings,
e.g. size options, various special effects, picture frames etc.
The memory seems to be very large too - I have already taken over
200 hi-res pics which has only used up about half the memory! Like
some of the other reviewers, I am disappointed at the absence of
Bluetooth, but all in all I would say that the other features make

Over the past few days, I had picked up a bad habit - sliding the
new Samsung SGH-E800C up and down repeatedly even when i did not
have any intention of using the phone. Such is the smoothness of
the sliding mechanism of the latest Samsung slide-up phone that
makes me want to keep sliding the phone. When compared to Samsung's
first slide up phone, the SGH-D410C, the E800C is significantly
smaller. When the phone is closed, an average male hand can easily
warp around the entire phone. The sliding mechanism is also noticeably
easier to handle. While sliding remains smooth like in the D410C,
Samsung added more resistance when the phone is opened. In this
way, the user has more control when using the buttons on the top
compartment. In the D410C, the top compartment kept sliding down
when I tried to access the top buttons. The extra resistance when
the phone is closed also prevents users from sliding the phone accidentally.
Those looking for advanced features after they are impressed by
the phone design are going to be disappointed. The E800C is only
a Dual-Band GSM phone. Those who use roaming services in the 1900MHz
regions like US and korea may want to avoid this phone. Bluetooth
is still missing from this phone despite Samsung's promise to bring
in more bluetooth phones.Coupled with the missing USB connection
option, users are left with MMS and infrared to transfer their picture
files out of the phone. The phone interface is one area where Samsung
had put lots of effort to improve. There is really little to pick
on the phone interface. In fact, little things like how the camera
button works impressed me a lot. To prevent accidental activation
of the camera function, users have to press and hold onto the camera
button before going straight into the shooting screen. A 640 x 480
pixels camera may not sound like a prized feature even on a portable
device like a mobile phone. But the quality of the built-in camera
is exceptional. Seldom can you find an integrated phone camera to
be able to capture night scenes as well as the one in the E800C.
You don't even have to switch to night mode to get a decent shot
of the glittering Esplanade at night. The camera is able to adjust
the backlighting of the shot accurately and still produce relatively
sharp pictures despite the slower shutter speed. The SGH-E800C is
small and suitable for those who don't need features like Bluetooth,
Tri-band GSM. The built-in VGA camera is exceptional. Rating:

One of the best phones on the market (at least for me), this is
easily the best phone i have ever owned. Admittedly if you are after
a lot of entertainment features like mp3, radio etc. this is not
so good. In fact the camera on this phone is only moderately useful
as uploading your photos to a computer in order to view them properly,
(the screen is not the biggest and the photos don't even take advantage
of the whole screen area) is difficult and a really slow. You must
get an irda adaptor for your computer. That is the ONLY way to view
pictures on the higher quality settings (you can only send crappy
very low res photos to your email account). But all this is only
of minor importance to people like me who carry compact digital
cameras (in my case the Pentax optio s) with them all the time and
which are miles better than even the best phone cameras. For me
the most important things are stlying (which includes size), ease
of use, battery and call quality. And in three of thes e departments
this phone is great. The battery life between charges was only o.k.
But the best feature of this phone undoubtedly is the slider mechanism
and the noise cancellation funtionality. 2 features that are actually
very useful. The update to this phone is going to be the best phone
ever. Rating:

it IS a little harder to connect with my PC, but i have an irda

I absolutely love it. Picture quality is ok for this size phone,
i'm not really looking for a megapixel camera phone anymore since
i use a pro DSLR for pphotography. I hear a lot of complaints about
the build quality and i disagree with most of them. My unit is working
just fine. I guess it really depends on how you take care of the

20MB memory for photos and ringtones, 1000 phonebook memory, Wap

The camera features are probably one of the most advanced for a
mobile phone with various effects such as black&white, sepia and
negative as well as other options such as photo frames, multi-shot,
upside-down and mirror modes, night mode and of course the built-in
powerful flash. The only downside to this phone is that with so
many advance features it lacks a video recorder/playback and the

I had this phone for 3 days on contract but i got bored of it quickly
and exchanged it for a 6230. The main reason was, besides the camera
the phones lacks features of phones alot cheaper than it is. It
has no bluetooth no mp3 it has no memory expansion, its not even
triband, you can buy phones that are less than £99 that have triband.
The phone also lacks video mode which is a shame because it has
such a big screen you would have thought Samsung would have added
this feature, even the samsung e600 has video mode and is £100 cheaper
and is triband unlike the E800. This phone is only expensive becuase
it has a slider if it never had a slider it would be a alot cheaper
its blatantly just a fasion phone and to be honest when its closed
it looks like a thick blob. The receptions not good either mine
kept hissing in a call but mine could have been faulty, the slider
feels wobley when you text on it you can feel the phone move like
it would break after a while. Also the menu doesnt make use of the
screen you will only find 9 poorly drawn icons which are non-animated
in a ugly grid view. There are no nice icons and pictures in the
menu once you have clicked into a particular icon you are left with
a screen full of drop down words with a plain red or blue background
i was very surprised by this cause samsung menus normally look so
atractive. My advice for some one who wants a sleek fashionable
samsung phone would be to go for the E600 instead. Rating:

I have up to now owned three different Siemens phone, most recently
the S55. I like them a lot - they're small, functional, reliable,
attractive, really well built. I've never had a problem with any
of them, but really wanted a sliding design on my latest purchase;
I realised I could either wait a few months for the new SL65 or
get the E800. I chose the latter, free with an Orange Yourplan120
contract. The phone looks good - it has a nice silver finish, the
screen is clear, the slide is nice and smooth and the buttons have
a good response. When slided open it feels a little flimsy, something
I've never found on a Siemens, but it's not a big problem. The screen
is a typically excellent Samsung, menus make sense and it's all
easy to use. I had no problems getting my head round it all, and
it's all common sense which is excellent. It's a little on the thick
side but that's not surpririsng given all the features packed inside
it. In any case it is still a very small phone, with similar dimensions
to my compact Siemens S55. The camera is surprisingly good quality
at "fine" using the 640x480 resolution. It's got zoom and brightness
control in addition to special effects features and the 20mb memory
can store plenty of pictures. Unfortunately, there's no bluetooth
to transfer them to your laptop and instead you have to use infra-red
or a cable. The lack of bluetooth is a big downside to this phone,
and marks it as a mid-range rather than a top-range phone. The keypad,
unsurprisingly, is not the best as it is crammed into a small area
on the sliding section on the phone. Writing texts can be slow and
uncomfortable, but the predictive text is good and making calls
it is fantastic - a good, clear earpiece, a good-quality handsfree
kit included free. Battery life is pretty good for a phone of its
size. I reckon two and a half to three days with moderate use is
the typical battery life, which is pretty good. The two games included
on the phone are fairly lame, but there are some good downloadable
ones around, even if they cost to download. This is a good phone.
It doesn't have the finesse or the build quality of Siemens, but
then again I've never found a brand that does. The software is a
little flaky in places and it can crash on occassions. But these
are crimes typical to most phones today, and I would recommend buying
this phone. But if you can wait for it, the Siemens SL65 is likely
to be similar in features but of greatly better software and build
quality, going on past form. Knowing what I know now I might well
have waited for that rather than go for the Samsung E800. Rating:

The phone is small and sleek and can fit into the palm of my hand,
navigation buttons (under the screen) are well laid out considering
the size of the phone. The slider is semiautomatic, meaning the
mechanism inside takes over the sliding once it gets to a certain
point. The menus on the phone are easy to navigate, on previous
Samsung phones each menu category filled up the whole screen, on
this phone all 9 menu categories are on the screen at the same time.
The phone can be operated unslided, the buttons are locked automatically
when the phone isn't slided. The number buttons are awkward to use,
I've lost count of the times I've pressed the wrong button, I think
it may be because I'm not sure if other users have experienced the
screen wobbling backward and forward slightly when slided up, this
is annoying after only having the phone for 4 days. Rating:
