The Samsung E710 is a variation on the E700,
adding a video recording capability, a voice memo recorder and a
camera flash for nightime shots. To economise a little, the E710
doesn't have MMS (just EMS instead), and it has a greyscale external
screen. This spec seems slightly odd to us, but that's the way it
is!
Instead of a shared memory pool, the E710 has dedicated
memory for each function: 700KB for ringtones, 700KB for wallpaper
and screensavers, 512KB for Java applications. A serial port is
available for connection to a PC.
VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels), 5x digital zoom,
photo effects, multishot, LED flash
Video recording (up to 25 seconds)
TFT LCD internal screen (65,536 colours, 128
x 160 pixels)
External screen: 96 x 64 pixels / 16 greyscale
40-voice polyphonic ringtones (25 embedded,
plus downloadable)
EMS
SMS (with learning T9, max. 50 storage)
Wallpaper & screensaver
WAP 1.2
Games: 3 standard games, 4 Java games
Infrared modem, PC serial cable
Phonebook (max. 2000 entries)
Scheduler, Calendar, To do list, Clock, Worldtime,
Alarm (Daily/Once/weekly), Auto switch on (when phone is off),
Currency converter, Calculator
Voice memo
Vibration alert
Dual Band (900/1800 Mhz)
Size: 90 X 45 X 23 mm
Weight: 85g
Talk time: 3 hours (standard battery)
Standby time: 110 - 180 hours (standard battery)

This phone is okay for your average user. A major problem is the
external screen: It breaks a WAY too easily. And the memory for
storing SMS is too small: It gets full at 40-50 SMS according to
what I see every day. Voice quality is also a drawback: If there
is any (like, two people talking even) noise around, I can barely
hear the person who I talk to. Rating:

I don't know if it's only my phone having some defects, but first
of all no vibration when ringing - except for one specific ringtone
where it works. The ringtones are so low that I hardly ever realize
when my phone's ringing. The screen is poor with vertical lines
all over it. Then - as a small gimmick - the Danish translation
is extremely poor too. Have also had problems about the phone switching
of in the middle of calls - eventhough there was still power on
the battery. Must say though, that the battery (besides the above
problem) has been working very well, and I haven't noticed a remarkable
lifetime decrease. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the colours on
the screen have "faded". I'm hardly able to read my phonebook anymore.
And finally it often happens that people who receive texts from
me are not able to read them due to problems with my phone. Tried
to contact Samsung but no luck explaining the problems... Hmm, I
wonder, since appearantly a lot of people experienced exactly the
same problems. No, this phone has never worked properly, and now
it's time to find something that actually works. Rating:

Right now i'm looking for a new phone because my current phone (this
E710) is not satisfactory. I bought this a long time ago but god
knows how i've put up with it. The camera is of a poor quality compared
to those out today and the recording feature is poor and not smooth
at all. I got my phone locked on Vodafone. Do not get thhis phone
on Vodafone! The interface is the worst i've ever seen. The colours
on the interface consist of: Blue, Black, White and Red. That's
it. If this phone did not have a camera feature, i would have kept
my older phone! (Nokia 7210) All i want is a phone with a fairly
nice interface, suitable features, good camera ability and a good
size and image. It doesn't have to be great. But this E710. Locked
on Vodafone it's an abomination. I can't even save my friends emails.

Firstly you need the samsung firmware (that's the phone's software)
- if the phone was from vodafone then the firmware is their own
and it makes the phone absolutely dreadful. You can flash the samsung
firmware yourself if you have the correct data-cable and you google
for the info (or you can find everything you need to know on howardforums.com).
Flashing the firmware to the phone is a lot more straightforward
than it seems and with the samsung firmware it's a great phone -
I prefer it to the software on more recent samsungs, such as e800.
The vodafone version cripples it and looks damn ugly. It's designed
to squeeze as much money from you as possible so every menu offers
to send you to the vodafone live wap-site. It's also full of bugs
- it crashed quite a few times whilst writing texts. I'm back on
orange now but with the same phone (if you want to unlock it by
the way you just need a couple of codes which you can google for).
The downside to the e710 though is its durability - like others
on here have mentioned mines developed banding on its screen (how
much longer it will last I don't know) and the rubber covers over
the power and headphone ports have disintegrated. I've had it a
year and a half. Probably not a good idea to buy one second hand.
Getting an e760 next - an updated version. The e7-series is by far
the best clamshell on the market. Rating:

whilst typing a message(using normal words, not like some of the
rubbish that gets typed here)and that meant I lost two games that
I had downloaded via Vodaphone, lost ringtones and just a plane restart
needed. Icing on the cake is that now the screen has develpoed a

when it displays a white background. As a talk'n'text phone it's

At first this phone rocked. Was a good upgrade from a nokia. Things
however were not going to go well from the start. Let me begin....
Software problem meant I couldnt send photo's to my email account.
Reseting the phone to deal with the problem, I would lose all my
photo's, not an option! Random Turnings off. Connectivity. Well
this phone is sold on the fact you can connect it to your computer
and transfer photos numbers etc blah blah blah...... (should have
gone with the nokia) Trying to buy a data cable from Vodafone proved
useless because they dont stock them any more. You have to buy a
E710 data cable only from vodafone because its their phone spec,
or what i can make out so far. Any help would be great.( hullome@hotmail.com
) Then the screen started fading after a year of use. This was a
very rapid change, from excilent to very poor. (now completely white,
unless you look at it from an obtuse angle.) I cant really explain
in words how much this phone has narked me. People seem to get confused
between the e700 and e710, Well they look the same. Navy Vs Silver,
no Flash, Flash. Actually very different phones. Apparently not
noted by the sales attendant in a t-mobile shop when i purchased
an E700 data cable. I admit this was partly my fault, but seriously
I cant write much more about this phone because I am going MAD. Rating:

the fone can't didn't have a flash for night shots but could hav
been nice. Now that it has bn revived and improved, it makes the
E710 a better option. I'm not crazy about where the flash and that
green-lookin object is located, but then again... where wud it go!?
I think email, and an option to send things via infra-red, and if
you could customize the menus into smaller letters, and an option
for themes and downloadable themes could have been cool features.
It would have been a really go wild fone. I'm kinda glad that they've
decided to do away with dat stupid 265 colour screen and replace
with something that's down to earth. Doesn't matter that it doesn't
send MMS coz here this feature is network locked anyway, meaning
you can't send MMS across networks. I think b4 i decide to change

forever :( But you get used to that threat :P Oh and you cant turn
off the camera sound - but I guess that is good to stop those damned
pedos in their tracks! Although not so good for 16 yr old male ;) Rating:

All you can say is wow what a fone packed full of features ive had
it for a few months now and im not bored yet! The only lacking department
is that the phone lacks bluetooth which would place it even further
ahead of the competition Rating:

Compared to Nokia or SonyEricsson, Samsung just have't understood
the user interface. Everything takes twice as many button presses
as I'd expect. It takes video, but so far I've failed to find anyway
to send the video to another phone or PC, so unless you enjoy watching
a 1" screen, it is pointless. Infrared is also lacking any functionality.
Yes, my PC detects there is a Infrared connection, but I can't use
it to back up contacts, add or remove photos/video or anything else.
I haven't tried using my phone as a GSM modem, but if this is the
only function of infrared, I don't need it. It doesn't remember
your user settings for any game. So the sound is always on until
you go into options and switch it off. Not good if you want a sneeky
game somewhere you aren't meant to. On the plus side, it is small
and has no ariel to brake in your pocket. I'm already looking forward
to my next phone. Rating:
