Samsung E370
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Samsung E370 is a beautiful mid-range camera phone in Samsung's
now-classic slider design. It's one of the smallest and lightest
phones in its class and also one of the lightest slide phones available.
The design is very practical, with the slider enabling a large screen
and a good size keypad to be fitted into a small overall device.
It looks great and is available
in a choice of six colours, including pink for girly-girls and black
for blokey-blokes.
The E370 is now no longer available. The Samsung
J700 is a good alternative. The Samsung
J700, Samsung
J700 Chrome & Samsung
J700 Pink are available from Dial-a-Phone.
The
E370 has a fantastic 1.3 megapixel camera which produces excellent
results, and with an LED flash you can take pictures after dark
- just don't expect the quality of a dedicated digital camera (it's
a phone after all!) There's also a video camera which records in
MPEG4 format. The display is average for its class. It's a TFT screen,
but with just 65k colours and a relatively low resolution - this
is probably its weakest feature when comparing with similarly priced
phones.
The
music player is very good and supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats.
Don't expect this to replace your iPod, because it's not in the
same league, but it's good for listening to a few songs while waiting
for the bus. With 40 Mbytes of memory available, you should be able
to store about a dozen songs. There's no option to plug in a memory
card unfortunately.
Connectivity
options are good - Bluetooth 2.0 and USB, and fast internet connections
are possible via EDGE. A speakerphone is built into the phone, and
there's also a voice memo recorder. Java games are supplied with
the phone and can also be downloaded. Battery life is good.
There's
very little to dislike about the E370. It's Samsung's best mid-range
phone and is proving to be very popular. Now replaced by the Samsung
E390, which offers the additional benefits of a memory card,
quad band and an improved LCD display.
Features
of the Samsung E370 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera with LED flash and 5x digital
zoom
- Video camera (MPEG 4 format)
- Display: TFT, 65,536 colours, 128 x 160 pixels
- Music player (MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats)
- 40-voice polyphonic ringtones
- Speakerphone
- Voice memo recorder
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
(POP3, SMTP, IMAP4)
- Java games
- Personal organiser functions
- Photo caller ID (1,000 phone book entries)
- Memory: 40 Mbytes
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10,
EDGE
- Size: 86 x 43 x 20 mm
- Weight: 85g
- Triband
- Talktime: 7.5 hours
- Battery standby: up to 315 hours

I bought this phone just last week and already I'm disappointed.
At first it seemed fine, but just a couple of days ago I noticed
a black mark in the corner of the screen which really shocked me
as I had been taking great care with my phone. I took it back to
the shop and to my shock they said I could not get it repaired or
replaced as it had a crack inside the screen which they blamed me
for. I was very angry at this as I had a warranty so they should
have either replaced or repaired it. So if you are looking to get
this phone I advice you to think again. By the way I am with o2.

I thought it would be hard to find a phone that equals in quality
as the D500, and i have finally found it. Easy to use, and navigate
through the menus. Ok, so it comes with Chelsea pictures, but they
can be removed to make free space. The Ringtones are quite good,
but you can use Full Songs as Ringtones which is a bonus. Quite
a light phone, and fits in the pocket without feeling chunky and
uncomfortable. Looks good to. The slide feels alot stronger then
that of (example) Nokia 6111, which is quite flimsy. 5 Stars for
this great phone!

with Samsung for repair. Before that I thought it was OK (if a bit
"toy-like" compared to phones I've had before). Annoying things
are (i) the display goes completely blank when not in use (ii) comes
pre-loaded with sounds/pictures you can't delete (I don't really
want pictures of Chelsea players on my phone thanks) (iii) you can't
customise or turn off some of the confirm/error tones

I received mine as a replacement buy back from Vodafone but it broke
down after two days. It looks to be overpriced with a small and
cheap plastic feel to it and (not surprisingly perhaps) pictures
of Chelsea players included. Decidedly lacking in class. The supplied
ring-tone is embarrassing but has a good vibration to it. Perhaps
this is the phone of the famous terrace chant - "One man and his
phone went to bed with Ashley" The phone can be improved immeasurably
by adding a screensaver of Gallas in his nice new red and white

Bought my phone a few weeks ago on Orange PAYG. Have now got a letter
G on the top display which no-one at Samsung or my service provider
can tell me what it's for, so it has to stay there, even though
I would rather remove it. Also needed a phone which gives me a delivery
report on texts, rather than me having to put RCT on all my messages,
but Orange have tried and told me they can't do it, even though
this is shaded out on my text settings. Surely this could be activated
to suit the individual, or maybe it's just a service provider problem?
Has anybody else found a way round this? Other than that, the phone
seems OK, although not sure whether to return to my Nokia phone
or not, purely for the text facility.

Just received today, so I don't have much experience, but I do know
how to fix the problem Chris had about trying to put a picture to
the caller ID. He said no matter how many times he tried, it kept
saying 'empty'. This must be because his numbers are saved to his
SIM card. If he goes into phonebook - management and saves all the
numbers to the phone then the picture can be put into caller ID.
I could not figure this out at all so I called Vodafone and they
sorted it for me. Otherwise, everything seems great on this handy

I've had various phones over the years, and this is the cutest yet.
It has the cute factor that the Motorola V3688 had when that first
came out (the first phone designed to fit in the Levi's 501 change
pocket). Memory: Deleting all the junk that came with it I've got
43M free. So drop your bitrate, and you should get a full album
(or even two) on there. Signal: With the same sim in it, it's within
1/2 a bar of a Motorola V3i. Auto lock: I which it was a three way
option with a Lock everything always when closed. I somehow seem
to manage to unlock phones in my jacket pocket, although I've not
had the E370 long enough to find out. (Better than some Motorola
flips which don't lock the camera button when closed. How many pictures
have I had to delete of the inside of my pocket). Battery life:
Not many many calls, but will probably last a the best part of a
week. (My home get 1 signal bar if I'm lucky, and kills my mate's
Motorola V975 in a day on standby). Display: Clear and bright, crying
out for a big retro clock with hands in standby, but the calendar
is useful.

used a D500 and a D600 and found both phones to be good except for
one thing, the price on release. Not so for this phone, it is very
reasonably priced and has everything i need, especially considering
it is small just makes it a good buy.Lastly on the main downside
on the phone is the volume, but i have found in general most samsungs

This mobile phone really has everything what a nowaday mobile phone
should have: its small size so it fits everywhere, enough memory,
quality camera and a fantastic design, moreover slide phones are
very handy. I must admit that it has a ew flaws: sms is not autosaved
and i think it even cannot be set to be, while batteries are being
charged the screen is turned on which is not so handy if you're
charging it where you sleep. Overall, it is a very quality mobile

else seems to have improoved. I've only found one flaw yet,- it
seems to be very sensitive when writing messages, if you havn't

first of all, i never give anythin top marks, apart from things
like the buggati veyron. got this phone today as a free upgrade,
and already i prefer it from my old samsung z500. the first thing
i thought was great was the size and weight, it really is so small,
when i get it out my pocket it feels so much smaller than any other
phone. camera is good, ringtones are bit poor, but just get some
via bluetooth and you're sorted. the sound quality is not superb,
but clear and loud, so for the size, its very good. samsung call
this a middle market phone, it hasnt got the best camera or memory,
but if your looking for a small fun and functional phone then this
is a good choice. this is my third samsung, and i am very pleased
with it. i had the z500 and the e700, and i think this is my favourite
so far. if your lookin for a really good phone though, with loads
of features and one that works really well, sony ericsson is for

I purchased this phone because of its small size but unfortunately
it has a number of problems. * Speaker volume is to low for taking
calls. * Once a T9 word has been written it cannot be changed later,
it must be deleted and rewritten. * Sent text messages are not automatically
saved. * Alarms do not turn on the phone if it is turned off. *
Only the morning call alarm has a snooze facility. * The conversion
feature has the wrong number in for UK gallons to litres. * When
charging the backlight remains on constantly, this is not good if
you charge in your bedroom. I hope that Samsung will release new
software for the phone that solves theses problems but until then
I could not recommend this phone.

First off, this ISN'T a bad phone, its just a good phone with stupid
flaws... 1) the 'camera button' on the side doesnt work...AT ALL...
so its kinda pointless even being there. 2)No option to automatically
save outgoing messages in a 'sent folder' like on my previous phone
(Samsung D500). 3) Reception is NOWHERE near as good as with the
D500 - in my room it can't find a network, yet the D500 has full
signal... 4) Text messages take an age to receive (probably because
of poor reception?). 5) Cannot assign caller ID's - there is an
option to do this, but upon attempting it, a message saying 'empty'
is shown... despite the fact there is a picture there (I have tried
with 8 different pictures, both taken on phone AND sent to it via
bluetooth). 6) Can only have 14 characters on names in phonebook...
14 characters is NOTHING if surnames are to be included. Aside from
these 6 points (I will no doubt find more...), this is a good phone.
BUT, it isn't a patch on the D500 I have been using over the last
12months. As such, I will be reverting back to the D500 and probably
sell the E370 on ebay once I have got it unlocked If you want a
phone which is TINY, then this is for you. If you want a phone that
WORKS, then stay clear!

Compared to the Motorola's I've foolishly subjected myself to in
the past, I can't really complain about the Samsung E370. It's small,
light and compact, the memory on it is far superior to my old phone
and it sends and recieves texts (Beats my old Motorola hands down.)
The memory isn't huge though; stores over 200 texts and I've got
8 full length songs on it and still have memory over. The camera
is fairly decent quality; it's not as good as some of the other
Samsung's I've seen, especially compared to the D-00 range but it's
pretty good. Only major complain I have is that you don't have an
option for vibrate and ring simultaneously for incoming calls, which
is a huge pain to me because by the time you've either heard it
or felt the vibrations the calls disconnected or rang thru to voice
mail; only having one at a time is pretty awkward. Aside that, the
E370 is a great phone, I've had it a few months now and really can't
find any major problems with it. The texting is very simple; a bit
confusing if you've sworn by nokia for predictive text simply because
the buttons are in the wrong place, but once you've figured out
the differences it's a piece of cake. Would definately recommend
it!

A cool little phone in a number of aspects but not many. First of
all, it is not very heavy and fits quite easily into your pocket
or handbag; secondly, the camera is superb for taking pictures and
recording and it looks great. However, this phone is let down on
its functionality as a phone. Sound quality is poor. When recieving
a call it is not vey loud and the vibrate is quite soft even when
they are at the highest. Also I found the keypad quite difficult
to use and sore on the fingers when texting. Also sending a text
is not the easier having to go into drop down after drop down menu
just to save and send a msg. It doesn't help that when sending a
mass text msg that you can't tick off entries in your phone book
but you having to come in and out for each person. My final point
is avoid this if your liable to dropping your phone etc. It is not
hard wearing, my lcd screen cracked when it fell on to my bed.

This phone reminds me of that beautiful person you always wanted
to get then when you do it turns out they are no good in bed. While
getting a new phone usually takes a breaking in period I have found
that this phone has some good points but has more bad points and
it is these that stick in the mind. Firts of all, the good points.
it looks the part, very stlylish and sleek as well as being lightweight,
ideal for placing in your handbag. The camera is great with superb
picture quality and battery life is excellent.Where this phone fails
for me is in its funtionality. The instruction booklet was useless.
It takes forever to text a message, having to go through numerous
drop down boxes and it doesn't automatically save sent text messages.
Also the vibrate and sound quality is very weak and I missed numerous
calls due to this which is very annoying. Another, thing you can't
change the message tone so your stuck with 9 tunes that samsung
give. Sound quality is poor on the mp3 with so ngs I transferred
sounding substanially muted and muffled. It is also not the most
robust phone I've ever had and only survived one major drop before
the LCD screen finally gave in. The alarm does not go off when the
phone is turned off which is a bit of bummer. When speaking to people
on the phone as well they've complained about an echo which can
be very annoying for them. All in all this phone is style over substance.

This phone is absolutely outstanding - much much better than my
last Nokia phone. The camera is great, and I personally find the
memory fine. It's enough for a decent collection of photos and a
few songs at least! The menu is really quick and the skins are attractive.
The buttons are fiddly at first to text with but after a while you
get used to it. The battery life is quite good, lasting usually
about 4 days which is good enough for me. The only bad point would
probably be that since I am on O2, I can't change the speed-dial
numbers but that's not really to do with the phone.

If you want a complete breakdown on what this phone does, go to
uk.samsungmobile.com. I will try to provide some info on what it
is like to actually own now that I have been using it for the last
month. Look and feel – Very small and light and is significantly
thinner than other Samsung models, but still feels quite solid.
The build quality is pretty good, no squeeky case that I used to
have with Nokias. The slide function works very well and has the
small rubber ‘grip’ at the bottom of the screen which
makes it easy to open and close. This was present on the D500 but
was taken off the D600 (big mistake in my opinion). I found the
position of the keys to be better than the D500 as there is no ridge
surrounding the keypad. Although it is a small keypad I have found
no problems with it – and I have large hands. The keys are
quite ‘clicky’ which is good for feedback, but not so
good for texting in secret …… for example under the
table in a boring meeting! The menus are very fast and there is
no screen lag that I can notice. Reception and battery: Very good
reception, not quite sure that it is as good as the Nokia 6230 but
so close that I can’t knock it. The battery has done better
than I thought. Historically Samsung have pretty appalling batter
life, but I was surprised with how long it lasts. To put that into
context – My 6230 battery would last about 5 days, the e370
is lasting 4 - 4.5 days. Again, I can’t knock it. Just make
sure you condition the battery properly in the first few charges.
Call quality: I initially thought that the incoming voice was too
quiet but found that I needed to hold the phone slightly higher
on my ear to hear clearly. This slightly annoyed me to begin with
as I needed to be careful how to hold the phone, I soon got used
to it though and now it is second nature. Outgoing voice quality
is good but not outstanding, I would mark it down slightly on a
Nokia for this. It is perfectly clear but the person on the other
end can tell if you are raising or lowering your voice. The speakerphone
function is again very clear and loud enough for most instances,
I can certainly use it in the car without a problem. The outgoing
voice quality on the speakerphone is outstanding, way better than
Nokia. Infact the outgoing voice on speaker is better than normal
use …… strange but true! Functions: Camera seems fine,
but I don’t really use it, same goes for video. Bluetooth
works well, paired with my headset fine. . Don’t use the mp3
so can’t comment, the 40meg space might upset people but it
is about 38meg more than I need so not a problem for me. A couple
of points I have picked up on, some of these I have learnt to live
with, some are just plain annoying: 1.Can’t set the phone
to vibrate and ring at the same time. This is a ‘feature’
of all Samsung phones and as far as I am concerned a major flaw.
2. You can’t change alarm sound, only slightly annoying, hey
if it wakes me up then it does the job but I would prefer to be
able to choose how I wake up. 3. You can’t change the left
and right soft keys. 4. The screen goes completely blank when not
in use, I am learning to live with this and accept it in order to
get improved battery life. 5. The instruction manual does not seem
to be terribly comprehensive – there are a lot of things I
have worked out myself by pressing buttons and seeing what happens.
6. You can’t have an option of ‘no wallpaper’.
7. The central key on the directional keypad is linked to the web
from idle mode, useless to me as I don’t u se the web on my
phone so this is a bit of a waste of the main key. However it does
switch to ‘select’ when going through menus. A couple
of things that I really like – 1. The flash on the camera
can be used as a very good torch, extremely useful. 2. You can set
up speed dials to work off the Sim card (same as Nokias, but a failing
in some Motos). 3. You can change the shortcuts assigned to the
directional keypad. 4. The menu speed is quick, accessing messages
is instant. 5. The whole look, feel and size of the phone is fantastic.
This is my first slide phone and I am very impressed with not having
to lock the keypad all the time, and not having to look at the phone
to press buttons when you can just slide. Finally, I carry my phone
everywhere so the smaller the phone – the better. In summary,
this phone is not perfect, but then what phone is perfect? I am more
than happy with it as it performs well as a phone whilst being small
and comfortable to use. I moved across to this from a Nokia 6230
and don’t regret it at all. If you were happy with the features
of the D500 and like the idea of having a much smaller phone and
are not too bothered about the reduction in storage space then this
is the phone for you. If you are really into music and photography
and happy with a significantly bigger phone then get the D600. Sorry
for rambling on, but I wanted to provide a bit more information
than ‘dis phone is da best. Get one!’
