Samsung E250
Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The E250 is an entry-level slide phone and
is one of the best phones in the entry-level price range. For less
than 50 quid you get a cool-looking slide phone with a camera, music
player, FM radio, Bluetooth and a memory card slot for storing loads
of music. You can't go wrong with this one!
Review:
June 2007.
The E250 is Samsung's first slide phone in the
entry-level market, and it's an impressive one. This is a phone
that retails for less than £50 on Pay as you Go, but it shares
the cool looks and design of Samsung's top-end slide phones that
are currently all the rage. It's a very compact, slimline and lightweight
phone, weighing just 81g. The keypad and slide are very similar
to the top-of-the-range Samsung D900,
and are a proven design - very easy to use. When closed, the navigation
keys enable you to access most of the phone's functions and you
just slide the phone open to make a call or send a text.
For an entry-level phone it's very well specified
too. The VGA camera (0.3 megapixels) and video recorder are fairly
basic, but the phone is also equipped with a good quality MP3 player
and FM radio too. In this price range, only the Sony
Ericsson W200i can offer the same. The MP3 player can also handle
AAC and AAC+ formats too. You can also set MP3 tracks as your ringtone.
The built-in memory of 13 Mbytes is enough to store 3 or 4 songs
only, but you can expand the memory with a MicroSD
memory card if you want to make more use of the music player.
Other handy features include a built-in speakerphone
and a voice memo recorder. All kinds of messaging are supported,
including MMS (multimedia messaging) and email.
You can download Java games as well as the embedded games that come
pre-installed. A full range of personal organiser functions are
included. Flight mode lets you listen to music, play games, etc
whilst the network connection is switched off.
Connectivity is outstanding, with support for both
Bluetooth and USB. The Bluetooth connection lets you exchange games
and ringtones wirelessly with other compatible phones, and can also
be used to connect to a stereo Bluetooth headset. The USB connection
is most useful for transferring music, pictures and videos to and
from a computer. A fast internet connection is available too, via
GPRS and EDGE.
All things considered, this is an extremely good
value phone. It offers the benefits of a music player and FM radio
with a memory card, plus everything you'd expect from an entry-level
phone, and in a cool slide design. Battery life is the one area
that could be better. At the time of writing (June 2007) this is
our favourite phone in the sub-£50 market.
Features of the Samsung E250 include:
- Digital camera (0.3 megabytes) with 4x digital
zoom
- Video camera
- Display: TFT LCD, 65,536 colours, 128 x 160
pixels
- Music Player (MP3, ACC, ACC+ formats)
- FM radio
- 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- Speakerphone
- Voice memo recorder
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS,
Email (POP3, SMTP, IMAP4)
- Java games
- Caller ID (Text, Photo, Video)
- Personal organiser functions
- Memory: 13 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 1.1
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10,
EDGE
- Flight mode
- Tri Band (900/1800/1900 MHz)
- Size: 96 x 50 x 14 mm
- Weight: 81g
- Talktime: 5 hours
- Battery standby: 250 hours

I bought this phone from Tesco as I am on Tesco mobile network and just
swapped sim card.Got it for £44. I got a 1gig micro sd card and card
reader of the net for £14 and off I went. But can I get mp3 tunes on
to listen to. No.Maybe its my lack of tech know how but the only things
I can get are of friends via blue tooth.Anyway I like the phone. Its
stylish and my battery lasts nearly a week on standby mainly with a
bit of playing with the features in the evening. Agreed the message
alert tones are poor. The radio is fine but why have to have earphone
plugged in before you can listen thro loudspeaker.Wierd.For the price
its a great phone and when I learn how to load it as an mp3 player I
will be happy. This is the phone I shall keep till it drops to bits becuase
I love it.

Bought the phone and returned it the same day, never had a chance to
use it because of the design of the back plate you just can't open it
easily I found that for the price of the phone the design would be better.
It seems a shame because it looks and sounds as if this phone would
be a good buy, but unfortunately worrying about breaking the phone trying
to open it put me off.

For what it's worth, its a great phone with so many features, it's hard
to go by this phone if you are looking for a bargain phone. I have had
this phone for around a month now, and I am very pleased with it. The
only faults (very minor I might add) is that you can not change the
alert when you recieve a txt to one of your own sounds/songs, you have
to use one of the default tones which is pretty annoying. Also, the
battery life isnt that great, but if you dont mind charging it every
day, you can do better than this phone for something at this price range.

One thing this phone is not designed for is easy access to the sim card
or battery. After struggling to get the back off for an hour, I threw
it on the floor out of frustration and finally it cracked open. A bit
uncivilised to have to resort to violence! Initially I thought it was
just my handset, but another review here complained about the same problem
and that makes me think maybe it is a design fault afterall?

I had Nokias and a motorola before but really liked the D500 my wife
has which has sadly now become an Ebay only option. Liked the D900 but
didnt want to spend silly money on a phone. Reviewers on here are right
the E250 does everything you need with a great spec, small profile so
easy to carry, its a slide style, good mp3 player and a radio. Just
needs a memory card and its perfect, shame Samsung didnt include a 512mb
card with it. I have the black version which for me looks better than
the silver in my opinion. I am a light user and the battery lasts for
around 5 days. Took it to the States on holiday and the call clarity
was so good it was like being at home !! A++ Get yourself one whilst
they are @ £50 if you shop around.

Really great spec for price. I bought a 1 gig memory card and seemed
to have limitless storage. I hated the really short battery life. The
battery was on its knees within 48 hours even with hardly any useage
and that is one of the things I hate most about phones - short battery
life. Use it to play games, listen to the radio or mp3 player and it'll
be flat in a lot less time. However, my phone is now no more, less than
6 months old and the screen is broken. I don't know how it happened,
it was not dropped or banged. Goodbye E250 and good riddance.

I should be getting te E250 sometime next week, and from my experience
of using my friends one, and all the reviews I've read, it seems to
be pretty good. I noticed a lot of people moaning about the memory,
and that doesn't make any sense to me. In all the specs. it's been made
clear that there is a small amount of memory, so the other day I got
a 512MB card for £4. Problem solved. It only has a VGA camera, but I
don't buy a phone to take amazing pictures. I use my SLR for that. So
from my experience using the phone, and the reviews I read while shopping
for it, I'm sure it will be better than many people make out. PS - Look!

I have had the phone 3 days and in 3 hrs it will be returned, the only
criteria this phone manages to live upto is the ability to make calls
and take photos, which you might say is what its supposed to do but.....
its also an mp3 player but I have downloaded several tracks from my
music library, all sent easily, but firstly not stored in my music files,
for some reason stored in other documents section then when you attempt
to play them it says unsupported file format, then theres the photos
(Jpeg) it takes Jpeg format Pics but you try sending your own from pc,
sure they go ok it accepts them it even stores them in picture file
but it says yet again unsupported file format even when the pics you
have loaded come up as jpeg it wont open them and when I tried to charge
it the second day of ownership it wouldnt, it just flashed and didnt
actually charge, took the battery out then put it back in tried to charge
again it wouldnt, picked it up and it started to charge put it down
it stopped, unplugged then plugged it back in, no difference, banged
it and it started to charge , whats that about? But the most annoying
thing is if you have a text msg come thru and your not right by the
phone and hear its single , solitary alert bleep ( only one option by
the way) it doesnt display the message alert on the phone when slider
is closed nor the time or date or infact any info on the screen, now
I know what your thinkin... you aint set it up to display, I have gone
thru the manual to see if thats why ,cant find a single mention of slider
display for this problem and surely if it has option to display or not
when closed wouldnt the default be set to display with the option to
not display actually as an option oh and if you think of tryin the samsung
site for help or support they dont list the 250V or if they do I cant
find it... As a convert from erricson with the nasty toggle button that
malfunctions every 3-4 weeks and even having the erricson 850i without
toggle that still has to be returned 3 times in as many months I will
have to go back to the old faithful nokia I guess, its amazed me the
5 star rating that this phone has got, but perhaps I have been unlucky
with this one phone, perhaps all its faults are a one off, I doubt it.
I have awarded 2 stars purely cos it actually does allow you to make
calls

an MP3 track as a ringtone it can only do this from the phone's memory
and some larger tracks won't fit on the phone!! Trying to figure out

If you want a great PHONE (not digital camera or MP3 player phone, just
phone!) then the Samsung E250 is perfect. It does everything you need
a phone to do, like make calls and texts - plus it has a few other great
features too. Its very slim, has a very large screen, intelligent and
modern interface, loud ringtones, good vibrating alert, and looks great!
Certainly doesn't look like a £50 phone, more like a £150+ one. I have
had the phone in black since March and have no complaints, and I really
recommend this to anyone who's thinking of buying it.

The phone is wonderful. Was recommended to me by a friend. But I think
I would love a memory card with more capacity than the one supplied
with the phone. I just like the phone: easy to use and full of colour.
It is a SMART phone Peter

i think this is the best phone for its price..full of features..sytlish,
light, fast, with expandable memory,it is even better than samsung e370
and SE k510 each of them has a 1.3 mp camera.but neither of them has
an expandable memory nor FM radio.the only competitor is SE w200 but
it lacks bluetooth so Samsung e250 is on the top. i really love it.

I bought this phone 3 days ago! So far, everything's fine! The only
problem is the memory card: I think u should have got one free! Although
they are not dear! (A 512MB is only £20.00 in Argos in the UK) Another
thing, i was on another website about this phone. Lots of people left
comments to say that the battery life is very poor! I think the battery
life is reasonable enough for such a small phone with all the features!
My old Panasonic GD 87 had only a camera on it and I hardly ever used
it and it only lasted for about a day! This phone has all the features
and with using it a reasonable amount of time, the battery can last
up to a day! I think that is very good! Well done, Samsung!

it being in my pocket. Anyways what a fantastic phone for the money
has all the features my k800i did (cept camera is poorer) all for 59
quid. My battery lasts ages charged friday and it died yesterday night
and thats with calling txting and using the radio and mp3 quite abit.
Such a great phone and it looks the best in silver. Go out and buy now!!!!!!!!

I have had this handset for approx 2 months now, and am going to trade
it in on Wednesday as I keep on getting deafened every time i make or
receive a call, and that is with it on the lowest volume settings. The
handset itself is fairly decent, has everything I could need, MP3 player,
camera, albeit a very poor one( i have never had a decent picture from
it) Radio and bluetooth. In order to use the MP3 player I had to go
out and purchase a 1gig Micro SD card, which was purchased from Play.com
for £8.99. Samsung could have put a data cable in with the handset to
make it a little easier to get pictures and MP3's onto the handset,
but at the price I paid (£54), I couldn't really complain. I have to
say its not the greatest handset i've ever had, nor the poorest handset.

Well, this phone is outstanding! ( i am a servire samsung fanatic) i
purchased it yesturday, am still haven't managed to use all of the many,
many features avaliable. unfortunatley the phone wasn't supplied with
a memory card however i did get a 1gig one for £20 very good value.
It is very similar to my last phone the samsung D900, i know what your
thinking why would i get the E250 when i have got the D900 simply because
the D900 is a piece of ****. It broke on me 11 times! I feel that this
phone is a very secure handset and has great facilities for anyone of
any age. i am young and listen to music on a daily basic, this phone
is perfect for that with its built in MP3 player plus it has an FM radio.
I did notice on the box that it didn't mention the Bluetooth feature,
well i can successfully say it very well has got it and it is the latest
one 2.0. The camera is exeptional to say it is VGA. I got loads of clear
pictures when i was out clubbing last night. The standard ringtones
are well very standard i suppose, but they are good enough. However
for all young people like me the bluetooth option is fantastic. The
sound clarity is superb! It has a very clear speaker phone too. It is
just as stylish as the D900 in fact my mates last night thought that
i had, got the silver D900. He was very shocked and well he's off today
to buy one! this phone is so light it is unbelievable! i simply could
go on for day's and days about this phone but really must dash! by the
way i have had 14 new phones this year including the Sony Eric k800i
and the Sony Eric w850i and the W810i , the samsung D900 but by far
the best one it the SAMSUNG E250. Mine cost £69.95 from Argos>>> thanks
for readin my review. GJS
