In a nutshell: The superslim D900 is a supersexy sliding
phone, complete with a high quality 3 megapixel camera with flash
and autofocus, and a fully-featured music player with expandable
memory to replace your MP3 player. The D900 has been one of Samsung's
most successful phones and was the best selling phone of Winter
2006 / Spring 2007. The D900i is virtually the same but with an
FM radio.
Review:
August 2006. Updated November 2007.
The
Samsung D900 puts the WOW! in WOW! FACTOR. Seriously, a phone this
exceptional doesn't come along very often, perhaps not since the
Samsung D500 in 2004.
You can tell we love the phone, so let's get on
with the reasons why. Firstly, this is the world's slimmest slider
phone (now beaten by the Samsung U600!).
Samsung have really perfected the slide design, and the D900 is
silky smooth. The physical appearance of the phone is unbeatable,
with a lovely magnesium surface coating and a small but functional
keypad making the phone very tactile and easy to use. The LG
Chocolate and the Samsung E900
may look cool with their touch-sensitive keypads, but you can't
beat the ease-of-use of a conventional keypad. At just 13mm thickness,
the D900 even beats the Motorola RAZR
in the thinness charts.
Looks aren't everything however, so let's move
on to the next reason for choosing the D900 - its 3 megapixel camera
with autofocus. This is simply the best camera currently available
in any phone after the Sony Ericsson
K800i. It gives results of amazing clarity, and what is really
astounding is that Samsung have fitted their best ever camera in
their thinnest slider phone! We are in awe. The video camera is
also of high quality and records in MPEG4 format. The display on
the D900 is very finely detailed with outstanding clarity and does
full justice to the camera. Some reviewers are mistaken in believing
that videos cannot be viewed in full screen, but they can - just
press 1 to switch to full screen mode.
Next the music player. This handles a good range
of formats - MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-AAC+ - and has very good sound
reproduction with 3D virtual surround sound and a digital power
amplifier. The player is easy to use with playlists of up to 30
tracks. You can use the stereo headset supplied by Samsung or a
wireless Bluetooth
headset. The built-in memory is 70 Mbytes, which is enough to
get started, but if you're serious about using the phone as an MP3
player you can buy a Micro
SD card - a 512 Mbyte card costs around £15. The only
real downside on the music front is that there's no radio included.
The phone has all the usual features that you'd
expect - messaging, email, MP3 ringtones, speakerphone, Java games,
etc, etc. The full spec is listed below. There are a few bonus features
- a document viewer for viewing MS Office files, offline mode for
use when listening to music on a plane, a TV-Out connection for
viewing images directly on a TV screen, and EDGE for fast internet
access. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or fast USB. The user interface
is very nice and friendly, with a new menu design featuring a black
background - very smart. Battery life is good. One gripe is that
you can't use an MP3 for the SMS alert sound (same with all Samsungs),
but good news - you can select vibrate and ring simultaneously.
2006 has been an exciting year for phones, but
the Samsung D900 has got to be a serious contender for phone of
the year. The D900i is virtually the same as the D900 but it also
has an FM radio (but is missing the document viewer). The new Samsung
U600 is even slimmer. The G600
isn't quite as slim, but features a 5 megapixel camera and is an
outstanding phone.
The D900 has been the best selling phone for the
first half of 2007 and there are now some incredible deals available.

I had a D900 for 2 weeks then returned it. I found the camera to
be the worst on any phone that I've had. And yes I did have it on
the correct settings! You can't take a decent photo in anything
other than bright light or the shot comes out dark, grainy and usually
a bit blurred. I can't fault the phone in any other department and
it looks great. I just need a phone to take decent photos ( I use
them in my business) and unfortunately the D900 just doesn't. I
exchanged it for a Nokia N73 which takes good photos 99% of the
time - it's not as pretty as the D900 but at least it can take decent
photos. Only gave it 2 stars because I've never had to take a phone
back before. Rating:

I've spent hours online looking at all the available phones from
all networks and I honestly think that the Samsung D900 is the best
there is at the moment. I just got mine this morning, after signing
a new contract, and without being too melodramatic: I was stunned!
It is unbelievably thin; I mean I knew that it's been dubbed the
World's Thinnest Slider but it's still remarkable when you hold
it in your hands. However it's size and weight aren't it's only
merits, the 3 megapixel camera is fantastic - second only to the
Sony Ericsson K800i. I've been fiddling about with it all day and
the battery seems to have held up fine too. In my opinion this is
the best phone this year and may remain so for a while. ...but (yes
there's always a but) I do have one minor niggle: the lip at the
bottom does make it slightly awkward to press the 0 if you have
chubby fingers. Rating:

The D900 is a fabulous phone with it’s sleek and sexy design,
the camera is amazingly clear, and the 3 million pics is very useful
when you have forgot your digital camera and you want those quality
pictures. The video is very good but it seems that a few people
out there and a few on this page do not know how to get the full
screen on their video playback, all you need to do is PRESS 1 whilst
the video is playing. The reason I have only given this phone a
4 star is because I have had to send 2 phones back due to poor built
quality, my first phone had a screen malfunction, and my second
phone lost the use of its back/contact button.. Rating:

This is the phone to have in 2006, probably 2007 and 2008 too. Superb
design, neat styling. Feels great in the hand with faultless slide
mechanism. Top spec camera, top spec display, and it plays music
if youre bored. Ive been playing with this for three days and battery
is only down one notch! Minor niggles are that I dont think its
possible to change the SMS alert sound. And the two second delay
when the keypad unlocks is irritating- although you can slide up
to unlock. Also some MP3 files are rejected when I try to load them-
though they play fine on computer. Also I would have made the max
ringtone a bit louder. Altogether this is a thing of beauty as well
as a phone- looking forward to recording some vids on it. Rating:

I got this phone yesterday after returning the LG Chocolate, and
it wins hands down! The screen/camera are amazing and the call clarity
is good. The only thing i would pick it up on is that it doesn't
automatically save sent text messages, and sometimes doesn't ask
whether i want to save them. If you don't need to go back for reference
as I do, then this should not bother you. If anybody does know how
to set the phone to save them automatically please tell me. Apart
from that I would recommend this phone to anyone!!! Rating:

Pros: - Light, thin and very sexy looking phone. Slightly wider
than I thought, but this is not an issue for me. - Sliding mechanism,
while not as smooth as the D500, is smoother than the D600 and has
very little play. - Superb screen. Absolutely crystal clear and
bright. - Camera quality seems excellent (over 3MP), although I
have not had a chance to play around with photo features yet. -
Menu system is intuitive, very fast and quite similar to my previous
D500, so no complaints there. Cons: - SIM card slot! Having inserted
my SIM card, it is now virtually impossible to remove it without
the aid of some tool. Unless you have very small fingers and possess
the grip of a vice, there is no way of removing the SIM. Not of
huge importance, admittedly, but an oversight by Samsung and an
unnecessary design fault. - Battery life. A full charge lasted me
just a few hours and I made/received no calls and sent only a few
texts. I spent a while entering all my contacts and generally getting
to know the phone and customising all the settings. I am hoping
battery life will improve once it has been charged a few times.
- The cover for the charger cable seems fragile and unnecessary.
I wonder how long it will last before coming off completely. Time
will tell. - The ridge which forms the bottom edge of the phone
gets in the way when using the three bottom keys (*, 0 and #). I
have gotten around this by adjusting my grip slightly but people
with bigger fingers will find this annoying. - Still no "profiles"
as feature on the Nokias, but I am used to this now as I have had
a D500 for 18 months. But the option would have been nice. Overall,
the D900 is a superb phone and, some minor niggles aside, I would
highly recommend it. Rating:

great. Menu system is fast and easy, Camera makes great shots, sound
is crisp and clear. Reason I did not give it 5 start are few. No

Is it possible to be in love with a mobile phone? :) Seriously though,
what an amazing phone. It has all the fanastic qualities of the
previous models and more. I upgraded a couple of days ago from the
Samsung E350 which I have to say has served me well for a year,
also a dinky little phone. I have to admit having bluetooth is a
luxury I had overlooked in the past but its well worth paying that
bit extra for it with any phone. The camera quality is excellent,
although doesnt quite beat the Sony K800i. The phone itself is sleek
and sexy, similar to the Motorola Razr in size but obviously slides
open instead of flipping, which is sturdy by the way, doesnt feel
like its going to fly off or break! I would recommend this phone
100% - its great all round and I havent found any faults as yet!! Rating:

First day of use, so far only two points of confusion (not in manual,
so lost a star on that): 1. How to edit an imported contact to add
a picture - can't seem to make link between photo/contact or contact/photo
in either direction. May be due to the contact being imported from
old phone v/s added as new. 2. How to modify the Incoming Text Message
tone. Can't set from sound file option, and set-up won't let me
in either. Perhaps something to do with Orange UK set-up. Ideas
anyone?? Otherwise, VERY happy with phone (upgraded from a SE W800,

Looks are deceptive with this phone - firstly i'll start with the
plus points. The phone couldn't possibly look any better, sleek,
sexy and sliding, top marks for appearance. The phyical qualites
are excellent, this phone must be the slimmest on the market at
the moment not to mention the lightest. Yet that's as far as it
goes I'm afraid. The guys at Nokia must be splitting at the sides
with laughter at Samsungs latest D-series edition. It simply does
not compare to the sliding Nokia range. So as anticipated here comes
the moan. The phone is priced around the same as the Nokia N80,
N90 both of which are similar. Yet with the Samsung D900 you do
not get a memory card or built in fm radio. You cannot customise
your message alert tone - its a choice between the best sounding
(sort of cheesey not to mention embarassing) default tone. The video
capture cannot be played back in full screen, meaning that recorded
and blue-toothed video is played on a very disappointing small screen.
Why have they bothered with such a large screen? Itmay be of high
quality yet it is frustratingly small to decipher, and there is
no way of changibng this. The Nokia phones offer just as good a
camera, yet they are able to offer a memory card - which can be
expensive, and a built in fm radio. I've only had the phone for
1 day and already ive packed it back into its box. In all, it's
a very poor attempt from Samsung its no different from its previous
D-series apart from an up-graded camera and thinner handset. The
Nokia phones are pioneering the way forward at the moment. Better
value and more for your money. Rating:

is very good. It's packed with features, and has an awesome 3mp
camera. I have read some reviews that slate certain things about

This is a great improvement to the D600 which was a good little
phone. D900 beats the E900 by miles cos the E900 has them pointless
touch-sensitive buttons which were a huge mistake for Samsung. But
they got back on track with the D900 which is great all over! The
3.2MP Cam is the best! The only other mobile with 3.2MP is the Sony
Ericsson K800 which is huge, bulky and weighs a ton! Also the Cover
for the Camera on the K800 keeps sliding down in your pocket. So
if u was a phone that takes blank photos in your pocket all day,

Right then - I took delivery of a SE K800i last week. After reading
a few reveiws (yes I know I should have done this first but....)
and trialling it for a few days, I sent it back as I wasn't happy
with the camera lens cover - it comes off easy and once its released
the phone is activated so if this happens in your pocket or bag,
then your battery runs down (very poor desgin) I also thought the
keypad was on the small side. Apart from these two gripes, the phone
is the nuts, superb camera and video and navigation is very user
friendly. I swapped for a D900. When I took delivery of this phone
this morning, I was well happy, it looks the part and feels good
in the hand. However, what is happenin with the video ? You record
in full screen and it plays it back smaller than the size of a stamp
meaning you can't see anything. Half the screen is taken up by a
virtual keypad for you to stop/play/pause etc etc. I've searched
the manual and settings and can't find anything to suggest you can
watch video playback as you recorded it ie. in full screen. I've
bluetoothed a couple of vids to the phone and they are the same.........get
the magnifying glass out - Am I missing something? Samsung also
missed a trick by not putting a radio onto this model - why ? I
am really tempted to send this back and get the K800i back, what
is the point of the big screen if you can't use it ? Was nearly

Had this delivered today. First impressions were that it looks nice,
reasonable size, but not as small as expected (is infact similar
in size to my SE K750i), it also feels slightly flimsy when sliding.
Shoved a sim in and powered it up. Screen is good quality. Menus
I find fiddly, options aren't instantly obvious. Camera good quality
but not as intuitive as SE equivalent. sound is ok but not wonderful,
loud but lacks clarity. Can easily use mp3 as ringtone, but no option
for a custom message tone so are stuck with the rather dull default
ones. Usb cable included but needs software to transfer files to
phone which is a tad poor. Vibrate is very positive a bit too positive
in fact! My real problems with this phone came as i tried to type
a text message in. The keypad looks ok but the bottom three keys
are far too close to the lip at the bottom of the key pad (allowing
the slide out to be flush with screen section when closed) now my
fingers are not the largest so chunky fingered people beware! I'm
sure it's a fine phone but 90% of my phone use is text messaging
and e-mail so this makes it a very time consuming and uncomfortable
process. I think it will be replaced by SE K800, asap! Rating:

I owned a Motorola V600 way back from its birth. It had it all,
but is now an oldskool phone! It was time to move on. When searching
the web for an complete phone I came to the D900. Naturally the
D900 has it all with more. As I came along the K800i I was wondering
what to do, but finally the D900 is my choice, why? For starters
the form factor is excellent, I tried them both (D900/K800i) and
it lies fine in the hand, the interface works fast and has some
features that makes it all a bit more beautiful. I’m not a
fan on rubber slot doors, but they are strong and open and close
properly. The sliding mechanism works smooth and feels really stable.
The K800 is a bit simple in its form and more from the same out
of the old days, but the cyber shot with xenon flash is excellent.
But comparing the results of the images from both the phones I came
to the conclusion that they are not so different. The Led flash
on the D900 could be brighter! (K800i video in QCIF, D900 video
in CIF) The memory slots where also one of the issues in my choice.
The K800i with it's Memory Stick Micro (M2) is not a good choice
of SonyEricsson as it is expensive and short on stock in my country
and others, so check it. The D900 has a more stable price worthy
microSD (TransFlash) card in it. As the form of D900 is only 12.9
mm thick, I think this is a correct choice. The volume of the ring
tone is correct and voice clarity makes a call in unstable environments
more clear for the receiver. This is very great when in noisy places
like bars or airports… D900 over usb is not great v1.1 but
who uses it! BT 2.0 is all we need. More in a month or so…

One word describes this phone - AMAZING. Bought it today and would

fair has a better camera as it is a cybershot although the silly
camera cover lets the phone down big time. The D900 is slimmer,
looks better, has a better keypad and the camera is hidden. Would
have liked a memory card but then the micro sd card is a lot cheaper

okay here goes, this is the reason why i have given only four stars.I
bought a memory card for it and decided i wanted to move all files
from phone to card to free up space on the phone,BIG MISTAKE.Now
when i want to edit photos on the memory card it won't let you do
it and when i decided to try to transfer all files back to phone
so pics would fill screen as wallpapers it won't let you then either,so
i edit the pic on pc with samsung pc suite and when you try to export
it back to phone it says file not supported too large, whats that
about.the pics im trying to transfer was taken by this phone so
cd software is junk,i was freaking within a few mins, also when you
want to use a wallpaper or tune from your memory card, what is it
it wiv samsungs that you have to let it copy to phone in order to
use it,totally defeats the object of having expandable memory as
what happens when your phone memory is full, your going to have delete
stuff in order to make use of the files-STUPID STUPID ,also why
can't you specify which memory you want to save files to phone or
memorycard like sony's it's so annoying and you should be able to
have the option in settings. But now i have calmed down and still
loving it anyway cuz apart from them annoying problems it's great. Now,lets
get onto the positives of this little gem eh! the camera is excellent,AUTO
FOCUS YAY !!!! (finally) and even better when you manually change
camera settings such as white balance, iso etc,the flash is excellent
and the pictures are crystal clear with all the extra features on
the camera such as effects, frames, mosaic shots(lots of fun these
are)the video is clear and sharp also with the same features offered
as on camera too. It's slim and sexy and matt black so doesn't pick
up greasy finger marks like the e900.The buttons give a positve
click too.Im glad to see that samsung seem to be listening to us
customers as they have put one or two basic ringing tones on this
phone and the vibetonz too so it will ring and vibrate at same too.the
battery is okay, not as long as SE but not as bad some other samsung
models at present.Volume of tones is good and loud and i have not
missed any calls/texts at all even in loud environments,so in conclusion
i think this phone will be very popular as it is an excellent one
