The
Samsung D840 is a really smart-looking slide phone with a metallic
casing. The silver casing marks a new direction for Samsung, with
a look that's similar to Motorola's original RAZR
phone. The finish is very attractive, with subtle curves and
bevelled cuts. It's hitting the shops at a time when 6 out of the
top 10 best sellers are slide phones, so Samsung are definitely
riding a wave with this one. And, as if that weren't enough, it's
even slimmer than the Samsung D900,
making the D840 the slimmest slide phone yet released (now beaten
by the new Samsung U600!). The
D840 is the same width as the D900, but slightly shorter. It would
have been nice if Samsung could have shaved a few millimetres off
the width of the phone, as both the D840 and D900 are rather wide.
The keypad is flat and very similar to that used on the D830,
but provides a bit more feedback than the D830's. Ergonomically
the D840 isn't the easiest phone to use, but it's certainly not
the worst and is perfectly usable.
Functionally the D840 is slightly less well specified
than the D900. It's virtually the
same as the E900 in fact. The only
real differentiating factor is the look. The user interface is the
same as the other Ultra-series Samsung phones and will be immediately
familiar to any Samsung user. To summarise the main features, these
include:
A 2 megapixel camera with flash and video recorder
- not as good as the D900 or Sony
Ericsson K800i, but better than most camera phones.
A superb quality display with 262,000 colours
and 240 x 320 pixels.
A music player that supports MP3 and AAC formats.
A generous 80 Mbytes of internal memory, plus
the option to add a microSD memory card.
Bluetooth and USB connectivity, plus TV-Out
and mobile printing with a compatible printer.
The D840 should appeal to those attracted by the
D900 or E900
but looking for something a bit different. The downsides are the
below-average battery life and the fragile nature of the phone.
Don't get this if you're rough with your phones!
Features
of the Samsung D840 include:
2.0 megapixel camera with LED flash and 4x digital
zoom
Video recorder
Display: TFT LCD, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320
pixels

no problems at all. It looks proper stylish and slinky but it could
be a little thinner as it is quite wide but no problem. The camera/video
is absolutely crystal clear and best ive ever had!! Music sounds
good and external memory is available (quite cheaply too) to truely

Do NOT buy this phone. I have owned a number of samsungs and sony
ericssons over the years and this is by far the worst phone i have
ever owned in my life. so much so that after 10 days of giving it
a fair chance, i am changing it for a sony w850i. Don't be fooled
with its sleek design, and nice mechanism like i did, because that
is all the phone has going for it. Battery life is terrible. Days
that i barely do anything with it, it lasts about 10 hours on a
full charge, and when i listened to the music player, for about
10 minitues, the battery lasted 3 hours! after a whole nights charge!
i have read elsewhere that many of the batterys need to be replaced
by samsung as soon as you get the phone, which i dont think you
should have to do whn buying a new phone. i have also read that
these replacement batteries are not much beter, and the 200 hours
standby, and 120min talktime that the phone is meant to be able
to do on a charge is absolute rubbish!!! even if the battery did
work as it was meant to, the phone is still nothing special, nice
look and large screen, but unimpressive features, slow to use, and
certainnly not easy to use all features, little you can adapt to
personlise your settings. So only buy this phone if you want a below
average phone that you will need to charge 1-2 times a day at least!! Rating:

Bought this phone from Vodafone about 4 months ago and the battery
would not last more than 4 hours. Took it back to the store and
they admitted the handset was faulty but the arrogant and extremely
rude store manager (in the Whiteleys/Bayswater branch) refused to
replace the handset. Eventually called customer services who argued
(quite embarrassing for me) with the store manager and eventually,
after one hour, they agreed to replace the handset. One week later,
I received the replacement handset. The battery now lasts about
16 hours on standby (which is enough for me). However, the ringer/speaker
have suddenly stopped working and so I am going to have to go through
this whole charade again. On another note, my Samsung LCD monitor
developed dead pixels after 3-4 months of usage. I used to swear
by Samsung's products but next time I am going with Nokia. I have
given 2 stars because despite I like the aesthetic qualities of
the phone and the functionality when the phone is actually operational. Rating:

there with memory card. The graphics are generally good, the camera
quality is fairly good tho i have seen better, but 2 megapixels
is still nothin to grumble at! Texting is really easy on this phone,
the keys maybe flat and all together but its no different to any
other phone i have used. I find Samsung phones very easy to use
but if u haven't had one before u may find it difficult to start

Agree with all of the above, very smart, nice bit of kit, but would
emphasise that the battery life is not too good. Most you'll get
out of it is ~2 hours call time, assuming blue tooth isn't activated
(drains battery even more if active). Found that once it drops from
full (3 bars) to 2 bars, you've got about 20 minutes talk time before
it dies on you. On standby, will go on a for a long time, but that
statistic is fairly useless to the avid mobile user :-) Other than

There have been (justifiable) complaints about the absence of a
ring+vibrate setting. The following works for D840 (other options
may also work): - Download and run PSM Player v5.41 (psmplayer.com)
- Open any WAV or MMF file you wish to use as a ringtone - Click
File > To SMAF > SMAF 40Poly, and you get the SMAF File Setting
screen - Ensure Max Size is large enough for your file. The D840
can take just about any reasonable size, so you can put 3000000,
e.g. - CHECK the Vibrator box, and to the right of that, select
a CHANNEL between 1 and 10 (11-16 result in no vibes). A bit of
testing shows that the vibration is affected by the Channel. e.g.
CH 1 vibrated to a half(?) beat of the music, CH 7 had a continuous
vibration, but for one ring cycle only, CH. 10 vibrated to the music
non-stop, etc. Some values result in a delayed vibration (i.e. RING
then VIBRATE, in effect). Experiment yourself, and enjoy! Rating:

got this phone on contract 2 weeks ago. i was attracted by the features
and i'm used to samsung as i loved my D600. the look of this phone
also is also what really made me want this phone. however. apart
from the looks. there is nothing else to write home about. overall
i'm pretty disapointed with the phone. the keys are really difficult
to use. the menu stays on the previous option. for example if the
last thing you used was bluetooth. it skips straight back to that
instead of bringing up the entire menu to re-select your option.
the camera is pretty gash. the speakers are pretty gash. and there
are other things. no doubt which the rest of these reviews cover.
im changing the phone tomorrow it annoys me that much. if you wana
look good. get this phone. if not. dont bother. Rating:

Recently upgraded to the this phone and I'm sad to say its being
replaced. I agree the phone looks fantastic however the sound quality
is dreadful, the speaker is poor , the camera is useless and to
top it off the battery life is now down to about 2 hours standby
following a full charge for a phone that is only two weeks old its
unacceptable. Avoid this phone ! ! ! ! Rating:

This phone looks so pretty and feels great. Unfortunately it is
to be replaced. I thought I could live with the seemingly minor
flaws, who needs a phone to vibrate and ring at the same time??
Well I feel that I do. Having come from the Nokia N70 I am so disappointed
with this phone, and I tried to love it I really did!! Don't be
blinded by the look and feel of this phone, its the functions that
make a phone and this one doesn't have that many of them. Rating:

Very nice phone all round , looks and feels beautiful and has a
lovely screen and is quite responsive. The speakers arent bad either
however, the feature set isnt that extensive and the camera is really
disapointing to be honest. Overal a good purchase, its a good looking
easy to use phone, which just lacks in some highend features Rating:

but better when compared to other samsung mobiles in this price
range -Display looks awesome -Browsing through the menu is brisk...i
mean it doesn't hang (-)ves -Menus are a bit complicated.. -Sound
quality is not as good as sony ericsson models for the same price.
-Does not come with a data cable..You hv got to buy it separately!

The scales are balanced with this phone. On one side you have an
absolute classy stylish phone, with a good solid feel, slide mechanism
and it's nice and slim. BUT....and this is a BIG BUT, this phone
is pretty dire on the very basics of functionality.... 1. You cannot
have this phone ringing and vibrating at the same time. It's either
one or the t'other. Even the oldest and basic of phones do this.
2. You can't change the message recieved tone, you have to stick
with a feeble sounding samsung one. Also you cant set this to making
the sound and vibrate at the same time. 3. When you send messages
it doesn't automaticaly save them in you 'outbox' so you can later
see what you have sent. You have an option to select 'send and save'
when sending each individual message. On the whole this phone has
the looks, but it's all frills and no knickers. And considering
Im comparing this phone to a few year old Motorola V600, the Samsung
flairs up as very dissapointing. But if you can live without those
basic minor flaws this phone is great for you. Rating:

i just got this phone for my birthday the other day and i have to
say it is AMAZING! it looks impressive and it is exactly that! You
CAN set mp3 files as your ringtone so all you who cant do it,its
because your not looking in the right settings! And the pictures
i have taken have come out great, maybe you need to hold your hand
a bit more stil so it can focus. yes...the light on the screen stays
on while it is charging but how is that a valid reason not to buy
a phone?? jus turn the fone over if it bothers you that much! i
have always had samsungs and they have always been great, this one
is definatly no exception! so anyone in doubt of buying this phoine,
please dont be, its the best one iv had, and you should go out and
but it!! :) Rating:

Nice looking phone, a pleasure to use (once you've turned the annoying
xylophone keypad tones off and changed the multimedia message T9
input language to English from the factory default German(!)) But
I had problems with the phone intermittently but persistantly resetting
itself because of a lack of a good signal. It's nothing to do with
my postcode area or the network on T-Mobile, I've had a replacement
but this one is doing it too and I can only put it down to the strength
and performance of the antenna. A shame because I really like the
phone but it's gonna have to go back. Oh and remember to keep very
still to avoid blur when snapping away with the camera, it's a tad
slow in less than favourable lighting. Rating:

The features are great, looks are fab and build quality is great,
but ... Yes the is a But ... and big BUT Battery life, it goes after
6-10 hours. I'm looking to replace this, becuase i used to get 2-3
day life from my sony K800i. So great if battey isn't important,
but think about how much you use your phone. 8/10 if u don't mind
about battery and 2/10 is battery is important. Up to you. Rating:

Samsung D840 is a really nice looking phone. However, as I'm using
it, I've come across a few shortcomings of the phone for example:
1. It does not support wav format 2. The zoom it offers in the camera
is lower than many other phones in the same category / price range.
Otherwise the phone is one of the smartest in the market, with slick
looks and easy to handle interfaces. An excellent phone in all senses. Rating:

The battery life of the D840 is a serious drawback. Typically the
charge indicator will start to show a decline in remaining capacity
after 2 days standby and less than an hour of talk time. My wife
has taken delivery of one as well and I have had a replacement device
sent to me by Orange and each phone has had the same problem. Orange
actually indicate a talk time life of 3.5 hours. Samsung have produced
a brilliant phone in all other respects, but the battery capacity
is a major design flaw. I would not recommend this phone to anyone
with a typical talk time of more than 30 minutes per day. Rating:

using the phone to make a simple phone call feels great. Its also
very easy on the pocket and its just the right weight and size.
If you want a snazzy phone with amazing features this may not be
