The
Samsung D600 is an upgraded version of the highly-rated D500
and was voted Handset Of The Year at the Mobile Choice Awards 2005.
It's two years old now, which is pretty old by mobile phone standards,
but now that the D500 is no longer available, the price of the D600
has dropped dramatically, and we think that when priced under £100
on Pay as you Go, the D600 is still an outstanding phone.
The
D600 is very similar in appearance to the D500, sharing the same
slide-up form, but there are some subtle changes to the design.
The phone is thinner, but slightly longer and wider. The keypad
layout is basically the same, but with some small styling differences.
The D600 is available in a choice of black and grey colours.
The
slide-up form factor has proven to be very popular.
Like a clamshell, it enables a large screen to be placed within
a compact phone design, and it has an advantage over a clamshell
in that many of the phone's features are conveniently available
on the front face. A gentle push will make the slide mechanism open
and close automatically, giving access to the keypad below. This
design has now been in use long enough to dispel any initial concerns
about its durability.
The
Samsung D500 was at the cutting edge of phone technology when it
was launched at the end of 2004, but what's new in the D600? First
of all the camera has been uprated from 1.3 megapixels to 2 megapixels.
The camera can take print-quality images and comes with a powerful
4x digital zoom, an LED flashlight, a choice of shooting modes and
an image editor. There is also a high quality (by phone standards)
video camera. A useful innovation is a TV-out connection, so you
can view your recorded videos directly on a TV! The D600 also supports
PicBridge for direct printing of images to compatible printers.
The
screen has also been upgraded and enlarged, with a resolution of
240 x 320 pixels, 262k colours and stunning clarity.
The phone comes with an MP3 player, which now supports
MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats. The MP3 player supports 3D sound technology
from stereo loudspeakers. MP3 clips can also be used as ringtones
as an alternative to the 64-voice polyphonic MIDI ringtones that
come supplied. MP3 ringtones offer the highest quality audio possible.
The phone makes use of the same voice clarity technology
used in the D500. The phone automatically senses the volume of the
background noise and will increase the volume and clarity of the
incoming call to make it more audible. In addition there is an integrated
handsfree speakerphone.
When
it comes to connectivity, the D600 is very well specified. As well
as full Bluetooth support for wireless headsets and data transfer,
there is support for a USB cable connection to a PC. A Bluetooth
stereo headset and Bluetooth car kit are available from Samsung.
As mentioned previously, TV Out and PicBridge are also supported.
The D600 is also Samsung's first quad-band phone, making it truly
a world phone.
The
D600 can handle most kinds of messaging, including SMS, EMS, MMS
and email. It incorporates a new PicselViewer which enables office
documents to be viewed. The formats supported are Excel, Word, Powerpoint
and HTML documents. The TV Out feature can be used to display documents
on a TV screen if desired.
The
memory available is 81 Mbytes - enough to store
60 minutes of video or up to 20 MP3 tracks. In addition the memory
can be expanded using a TransFlash card, making the storage
capacity of the D600 as good as any other phone on the market.
Are there any problems with the D600? Well, nothing
major, but some small things that could be improved ... the PC software
supplied isn't the most user-friendly, you can't change the default
message tones, and there's no option to have vibration and ringtone
simultaneously. OK, these are minor quibbles and shouldn't put anyone
off buying this amazing phone! You can read the user reviews below
for "real world" comments, but what stands out is that
there are no major issues with this phone, and it comes quite close
to perfection!
In summary, the D600 builds on the success of the
hugely popular D500. Whilst it doesn't have the Symbian applications
of a Nokia smartphone, nor the auto-focus ability of the latest
camera phones, for under £100 it still offers extraordinarily
good value for money. The D900 is
the replacement for this phone and is highly recommended.
Features
of the Samsung D600 include:
2 megapixel camera (1600 x 1200 pixels) with
flash and digital zoom x4
Video recording & messaging (352 x 288 pixels)
with video light
262,144 colour TFT LCD display (240 x 320 pixels)
Music player (MP3/AAC/AAC+)
Java games (3 embedded games - Forgotten
Warrior, Freekick, ArchAngel)
Ringtones: 64-voice polyphonic and MP3
Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, SyncML,
TV output, PicBridge

This is my second review of D600. I wrote one not long ago, when
I first heard that it is out in my country. The price is about 70,000
naira in Nigeria. Quite expensive for an average worker like me.
But guess what? i Bought it! And i wish to let everybody know that
it beats even my wildest imagination. The video is the best that
I have seen in a camera phone before. The PC sync software is super.
I was able to Synchroinise with microsoft outlook. It also comes
with a Movie editor, Pic Edito, sound Converter and data transfer
software- All in the Studio 3. Needless to say, the Movie editor
is almost as good as Pinnacle. You can edit your movies and clip
it in a nice format to be saved from your PC to your phone for viewing.
I also enjoyed the Picsel viewer. not minding the small screen (QVGA),
It is quite readable. The screen by the way is the best in a mobile
phone. The TV out function just ROCKS my world. the User interface
is sweet, I liked the video which could be set for an incoming call.
The 2 mega pixel camera is comparable to SE 750i. The video just
knocks K750i off. How can one realistically compare QVGA and QCIF
resolution. D600's video is so much better. Thee's lees noise and
more fluid movement. Any SE lover over there? these phone should
honestly make serious minded people to go have a re-think and perhaps,
switch over to Samsung and the edifice known as SGH D600 The slider
and design is also good. This is a phone one would like displaying
because it shows what it is worth. To end my monologue, I wish to
absolutely recommend this phone to anyone who cares to buy. I just
think you wouldn't be disappointed. Because I am not. Rating:

I think this phone is great. My phone is not the be all and end
all in my life, so I'll keep this simple. With my job, I travel
all over Scotland and have no problems with signal strength (I'm
with O2 on the network side). The sound quality of the ringtones
is first class. The voice quality on calls is high. The design is
robust and the slide action very smooth. The menu's are simple,
can't understand why anyone could find anything remotely complex
here. Texting is easy with the big buttons (unless your thumb is
the size of your average size 5 Mitre). The quality of the pictures
with the camera is superb. There is no problem with battery life.
I don't have any problems with the message tones, then again, I

Firstly, to give some perspective, I had been waiting to upgrade
to this phone for months, regularly calling Orange to check availability.
I have now had it for just short of a week -- not a long time admittedly,
but from my impressions so far I am going to send it back. The D600
is a lovely little phone, very tactile and quite stylish (if you
like `Darth Vader chique'). Feature-wise on paper, it has everything
and all to a high spec., but somehow things don't seem to have gelled.
For instance, yes it does have an MP3 player and expandable memory
BUT using the player prevents you from doing anything else with
the phone, even just telling the time. The sound quality is good
BUT most people, except for those blessed with exceptionally large
lughole, will find the earphones too big and be plagued by them
popping out (although I believe that it is possible to buy an adaptor
converting to 3.5mm earphones, but then of course you loose the
hands free functionality.) Menu navigation can be quite frustrating
as you enter sub-menu after sub-menu for such complex tasks as sending
a text. Actually, I might add that I found menu navigation in general
a tad sluggish, although I guess this could be a result of the software
Orange package their phones with. Connectivity is great -- unless
of course you are relying on Samsung's software, which is temperamental
at best and an embarrassment at worst. Had I not waited so long
for this phone I dare say I would not feel disappointed, but I really
did expect more. That is not to say it is a bad phone, far from
it. The screen is beautiful, video quality is fantastic (as long
as in well-lit conditions) and build quality seems good (and TV-out
and the ability to read office docs is a bonus, although not make-or-break
for me). This may well be the phone for you if you like the look
of it, it definitely excells at some things, but for me, it's little
idiosyncrasies were too frustrating. Oh, and if you do opt for this
one, good luck with the message tones... Rating:

My wife has the D600 and i have the K750i. The first difference
is the display, which is sharp, bright and colorful in the D600,
and, which makes the point, is MUCH LARGER than that of the K750i.
One Point for D600. The K750i has the ability of playing Java3D
games, the D600 not. One for K750i. But the stereo sound of the
D600 is GREAT and much better than the sound of the K750i. One more
for D600. The functionality of the K750i is more complex, but therefore
the D600 is easier to handle, even standing. The manufacturing of
the K750i is not very good (joystick will break, rubber slits, keypad
small and bad to press), where the D600 has a clear concept behind
it. Large keys, easy to press, sliding display. One (big) point
for D600. So all in all both phones are comparable, but because
of the better design, i would prefer the D600. Rating:

There is no such thing as a perfect phone - I'm very critical of
ALL the handsets I have owned, so if I'm giving this 5 stars, it
just means it's as good as it gets - savy? right then. Just prior
to this I was using a SE v800i. Loved that phone and was really
p'd that vodafone couldn't find me one that had no faults (keys
& screens always the fault).Faced finaly with having to replace
it altogether, It was going to have to be either the K750, or the
W800 if I wanted to stick with SE - some choice!. I didn't want
to go back to 'soap bar' phones, and nothing else offered any thing
like the features of my v800... except the D600. My Previous experiences
with Samsung phones have left me cold... or just plain irritated
so it was with some pessimism I chose to try it. First impressions:
It oozes style. Sleek, sexy and feels great in the hand. the slide
is smooth, the buttons are great and the screen is gorgeous (one
thing I was afraid I would compromise on from the v800). Also the
menu in the sonys is one of it's best features, and I was plesantly
surprised that the D600's isn't all that different. In fact it has
some good features that the V800 didn't. Without resorting to the
user guide I could work thinks out quickly. It's quick too. Connectivity:
only gripe is the USB is only 1.1 (why?) but it connects well enough
- the bluetooth is absolutely brilliant and transfer speeds are
really fast. Interfacing with the PC studio is simple and effective.
Network connectivity is fine, no problems with getting a signal.
Sound: Although the stereo speakers don't seem to make a huge difference
to the quality of music playback, it is plenty loud enough and clear
as a bell in phonecalls and MP3 playback. Battery/Power: I know
a lot of folk gripe about this but I can honestly say I've never
experienced the problems with battery life that other seem to. either
I've been very lucky, or you're all doing something wrong! In any
case; the charge on this phone is lasting well - even with bluetooth,
mediaplayback and photography. In conclusion, it is an excellent
phone and I am more than happy with it. It isn't perfect - but let's
face it, did you ever have one that was? Rating:

be questioned - both are decent quality. The downside ive noticed
from using the phone for 2 days are that the message tones are the
worst tones i've every heard (you get 10 tones to choose from).
The phone seems to take too long when trying to view pictures youve
downloaded, and its an inconvienence. The headphones are awful,
and my button doesnt work on them when someone calls me, so its
a pointless hands-free device. The battery isnt that good either.
Havent tried the software yet, ive sent everything to my computer
through bluetooth, which works fine. Having said that, it does everything
you would expect it to do, the pictures and videos look awesome,
and the phone can pack some decent sound. I like the Samsung text
layout and this keeps in trend with that, plus the games are pretty
funny. I wanted the W800i, but it cost more. I think that overall
it seems like a better phone, but the grass is always greener! The

This is actually my third comment/review on this phone - previously
I gave it 5 stars.. I am now revising my rating to 3 stars... Why?
I think I am entitiled to do this as I had lived with the phone
for two weeks... It was great at first, then things began to become
apparent.. 1/. The single biggest problem I had was battery life
- Simply going to work and back again would severely drain the battery
- playing MP3's... 2/. Call reception - after all it is a phone!
My work colleague (same network) got full reception whilst my phone
had about 2 bars lit up on the reception - it frequently lost me
calls at work - I had to rush out the buiding just so I could take
a call - not very good! Thats about it but since a phone is for
using to make calls at the end of the day - this model didn't cut
it for me... I returned it for a SE W800i which has much better
battery life and much better reception... It also has much worse
video quality however... Maybe Samsung will work on the battery
and reception problems for their next model... I hope so - The D600
is still a great phone - just not good enough for me to be practicle
with over the next year... Rating:

Having been a Sony Ericsson user for some years I was looking forward
to a change. I've just upgraded from the V800 and love the phone
- with a few exceptions. There is no voice dialling (important if
using in the car), I haven't found a way of inserting a "pause"
in phone book numbers and I find it very annoying not to be able
to have the phone ring and vibrate at the same time. On reflection,
I would have preferred the S-E K750i but don't find the keys comfortable
to use. If S-E had brought out a slide phone with all the features
of the 750i that would have been the phone. If anyone can enlighten
me on how to add a "pause" on phone book numbers it would be appreciated. Rating:

i have had this phone for a day now and i am really impressed with
it. It has an mp3 player 2 megapixel camera, and the phone is reli
easy to use. its slide up design is great!!. there is one thing
that bugs me though, and although its not a problem i wanted to
ask whether it happens with any one elses phone. when i switch my
phone to silent mode and i got to the ringtone list it asks me whether
i want to play the sound in quiet mode and i say yes the tone does
not play, but when i go out and go back in and it asks me the same
question do i want to play the sound in quiet mode and i say no
the sound plays. Does this happen with any 1 elses phone??!! U can
set downloaded tones as ringtones if u go to file manager than down
to sounds, and then downloaded sounds. select the tone u want and
another list will come up select set as and then ringtone. :D people
like dave and pete who are comparing two different phones (the d600
to the k750i) it is pointless becasue other people want to know
whether the phone is good not how it compares to other phones, its
pointless giving it a poor rating by comparing the d600 to other
phones coz some people haven't had the k750i so it doesn't help
them and it just shifts the ratings!! only rate the phone on its
own!!! Ollie, you CAN have ur message saved to ur sent box if u

you will find that you have the same phone (slightly larger, but
thinner) with few advances on the D500. The camera is decent, but
if you want top notch quality then the Sony Ericsson W800i or K750i
simply cannot be beaten. I think samsungs marketing is managing
to throw people off the scent that this is the larger version of
the D500. When i upgrade phones i expect more & better features

This phone would be superb, if a few things were fixed; 1. There
is no option to have the phone on melody AND vibrate. You can either
have it to play a melody, vibrate, or to vibrate then play the melody.
2. You can only use pre-installed melodies for text messages, I
can't find a way to use my own files on the phone for texts. 3.
For some reason my sent text messages arn't saved in the sent item
boxed..probably a software bug? 4. Most importantly, the battery
life is abysmal, I got this phone just under 2 weeks ago, and have
charged it about 6 times already. If the above criticisms were fixed,

Samsung TRIED to make it hard for unfamiliar users. It's also heavier

The camera is good, but the absence of auto-focus means the K750i

This phone has received excellent reviews for all the good features
- the camera, the mp3 playback etc, and these are great features,
but this phone is severely let down by several things: Firstly,
in the UK model at least no messages are sent to your sentbox, there
is no option to turn this on or off either so it is a software fault.
Texting is nowhere near as good as nokia's system. Once you have
typed a word and pressed space there is no way to change the word
without deleting every character of it and re-typing. The clear
button deletes the whole text when held down (a feature Nokia removed
several years ago) instead of deleting characters at a faster rate.
When I click to add a word to the dictionary it auto puts it in
capitals, and then the predictive texting will only put that word
in a text, in capitals! The phone can take a Transflash card, although
one is not provided for some reason. (Sony Ericsson phones are bundled
with a DuoStick) A point to note is that currently Transflash will
only get you to 512MB, whereas the DuoStick has up to 2GB I believe.
Ive also noted reasonable distortion at high volumes on speaker
phone. I am currently considering sending mine back - but there
isn't much that can take this on in terms of quality and quantity
of features, so if you can live with it's downfalls, go for it. Rating:

After reading the reviews on here, I visited my local carphone warehouse
& checked it out, yes its a little bigger & doesnt have voice dial,
but goddamn if the bods at Samsung havent ironed out some of the
niggles they had with the D500. The way they sorted the address
book has changed from sorting by surname to first name (mind you,
the D500 I have got does have oranges software on it & the d600
is uncorrupted by oranges software ;-) lol), accessing the various
functions either through the menus or shortcut keys on the direction
pad is nice and easy, the full screen play back of video is outstanding,
its pretty good when you output it to tv aswell. The facility to
view office & pdf documents is a great touch, the quality is good,
but I found that you miss the top of some of the documents (might
have something set up wrong on the tv or the phone). The mp3 alarms
are x10 better than the very limited choice you had on the d500.
Ok the camera is on the back & you dont have the time or any missed
txts or calls dont show up on the standby screen (you can just quickly
check by pressing the volume key for 2 secs or press a direction
key to activate the screen, no biggy really). The screen is crystal
clear & the resolution is the best Ive seen for awhile & the fact
I got a 512MB transflash card makes this a great phone to have :-) Rating:

you need to get a Transflash 512MB Card! I have 27 music videos
on mine at the moment (just testing to see how many I could fit)
plus some MP3s, photos etc. The best and easiest way to encode Fantastic
quality videos that are in Stereo with great sound and stay in Sync?
Here is the answer - use the Sony PSP Image Conversion Software
v2 - Drage on your source file and click the Mpeg 384 Setting -
then put onto your phone! Easy! Quality is outstanding! You can
also buy an audio adpater that fits in the side of the phone and
comes out in a 3.5mm minijack for plugging in your own headphones
or to a car adapter! Stereo sound and videos from your phone - in-car!!

But watch out, a very bright clear screen, camera and sound try
to drown out flaws. Samsung seem to be top in some aspects but years
behind in others. Even the manual tells you what it does, but not
how to do it. There are 3 files for photos. Ones youve taken on
the d600, ones youve transfered from another phone and favorites.
There is no way to file pictures away, say if you want to keep something
private. Ive not found a way to save my messages on the phone rather
than the sim card. If there is a way then as i said before the "manual"
doesnt tell you how. The camera keeps getting covered by your finger
and the menus for it are a bit muddled although the picture quality
is good. But make sure you dont take your pictures in high quality
if you want to send them via mms because they will be twice the
maximum size allowed. As will videos unless you fiddle with the
settings to bring the quality down to other phones settings. There
is also no way that you can have the vibration on at the same time
as the ringer. Its one or the other, or one then the other. Overall,
a good phone if you like to buy latest model, good camera and clear
sound, but this phone will be outdated in a few months. If you want
practicality, Nokia still seem to be ahead. If you want the best

amazing, really sharp colours - although it does take the photos
fairly close up! The video is ok, not great but will do - seems
to be quite fuzzy. The handset it's self is very thin compaired
to the D500 and has a large screen. The camera is on the back of
the phone so can't see yourself in a 'self-shot' and you have to
be carefull your fingers don't get in the way of the lens. You can
watch your videos back on your TV, not in full screen but a little

I have just taken back my D-500 while it was still in trial because
the D-600 suddenly became available and who wants last week's phone!
Mind you, I had got used to the D-500 and really liked it. I had
even succeeded in synchronising my Outlook information on my computer
(the main reason I use mobile phones after telephone calls). As
far as that is concerned, I WAS a little disappointed that the D-500
can't synch the Calendar information if you have any 'recurring'
events (such as birthdays, take-out-the-rubbish reminders etc).
So I deleted all these from Outlook's calendar (and replaced them
all individually up to 2015!) just so the synchronisation process
would work. It did, and I was reasonably happy with the result.
I say 'reasonably' because the 'Contacts' synchronisation doesn't
include the Company Name field, so I can't see in the 'Phonebook'
information which company the contact works for. Bit remiss of Samsung.
Back to the D-600. I expected it to do all that the D-500 did in
the synching department, but after 3 days, still can't figure out
why the 'Calendar' synch repeatedly fails. Bluetooth is configured
OK (I have synchronised Contacts OK) and I have even tried using
the USB cable. It still ‘fails’ to synch the Calendar.
Why? How can I solve this? Samsung Customer Support has promised
to get the techies to phone me, but after 3 days, I still haven't
heard from them. That's another failure of Samsung's - why can't
we phone the Technical Support people direct (as with Nokia)? I
was disappointed to see that they almost never called back ("They
are very busy" I was told - hmmm, I wonder why....?) when I was
trying to get the D-500 software installed and up and running. (When
they did, however, their help was excellent.) Another problem no-one
has so far resolved, is why can’t I get the MMS function to
work? The message "Unknown Subscriber" comes up every time I try
to send a MMS (photo + subject line + message) to someone in my
Phonebook. I await Samsung's technical help on these issues, but
don't get me wrong, what everyone else says here to date is right
- it IS a smart, sexy and extremely usable little phone and I have
gone out of my way to adapt (ie: Outlook) to accommodate the quirks
of the synchronisation process. And I agree, it could do with a
few more 'skins' too – the blue version is a bit wishy-washy
and I’m not that keen on the red version. Also, I got used
to some of the 'slide sounds' on the D-500 that aren't on the D-600.
Surely it's not too much to expect Samsung to include all the D-500
sounds PLUS add a few new ones for the D-600. Thanks for reading
this. Almost no-one talks about the synchronisation capabilities
of these phones, so I hope this help anyone who sees this as being
as important as I do. Rating:

well what a phone,i am so much a samsung addict and this had fed
my addiction so much im full up.I got mine yesterday after waitng
for what seemed like an excruiating time and its soooo sexy. its
a bit longer than the d500 but hardly makes any difference, iys thinner
and sexier. the camera has finally been upgraded to an excellent
quality in the same league as all the sharp phones, there's loads
of fun things to do with the camera like before and being able to
view videos and pics you have taken with it on your tv is so easy
and wicked to use. Also its brill that you can expand the memory
as i dont normally take long to fill mine up with stuff and now
the camera is better you will store loads so expandable memory is
a godsend. The quality of calls is perfect like the d500 so at least
samsung didnt mess up on that like with the e720. The only thing
is is that there is only two colour skins on this phone and dont
have a clue where to find any more, tried samsung site no luck. Cant
comment on battery yet as till on first charge but still showing
full. so overall this phone is amazing and you will want one and
people will envy you and this will blow all the competition out
of the water, buy it,buy it,buy it. it comes free on a reasonable
tariff with 02,it will be the best thing you bought,I PROMISE!!!!!!!!!! Rating:

This phone is fabuuuuluuuuseeeee!!!!! I'm going to buy it in about
two weeks time. 2 mega pixel camera, memory slot, sliding form factor,
brilliant screen,I mean what more could you ask for? Its rare too,
pretty hard to find them at the moment. Seen and used many mobiles
but none as good as this. Congratulations Samsung you have just
blown the competition away. Brilliant phone. Will be writing another
review as soon as I have got it and used it. Rating:
