O2 Ice Review

Phone rating:

The O2 Ice is an attractively-styled 3G phone with a classic "candy-bar" shape. It's a very slim phone, at just 14mm, and elegant, with an ice white colour scheme. The keypad is well laid out, with small but nicely raised keys and a 5-way navigation key and is easy to use.

The O2 Ice supports video calling with a front-mounted video camera. There's a second rear-mounted camera for taking still images. This is a 1.3 megapixel camera and gives acceptable results, but is by no means the best camera on a mobile phone. The Ice has an MP3 player, which is of reasonable quality. Although the memory supplied is just 32 Mbytes, which is not enough to store more than a handful of music tracks, there is a Micro SD memory card slot which allows you to expand the total memory to more than a Gbyte - enough to store plenty of songs. This isn't up to Apple iPod standards though, so don't expect to replace a dedicated music player. There's a headset socket on the side of the phone. The O2 Ice comes with a USB cable for transferring music files from your PC, and also supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

In addition to video calling, the O2 Ice supports all of O2's 3G services, and being exclusive to O2, the phone is configured with easy access to these. For example, you can access O2 Active with a single key press. Internet access is fast, thanks to the 3G connection.

Our first impressions of the O2 Ice were good - it's a compact 3G handset offering excellent value for money - but as with so many of the O2-branded phones, it's unreliable. Read the user reviews below for a flavour of people's real-life experiences with this phone. The main problems seem to be software/firmware related, and can range from particular functions not working to the whole phone shutting down and needing to be replaced. These problems appear to be random, so if you buy it you might be lucky, or you might not.

Features of the O2 Ice include:

  • 3G video calling
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Display: 256k colours, 176 x 220 pixels
  • Video camera
  • MP3 player
  • MP3 ringtones / 64-voice polyphonic ringtones
  • Voice recorder
  • Messaging: email
  • WAP 2.0, GPRS
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
  • Memory: 32 Mbytes plus Micro SD memory card slot
  • Size: 117 x 49 x 14 mm
  • Weight: 92g
  • Triband plus 3G
  • Talktime: 6 hours
  • Battery standby: 312 hours

The O2 Ice is a nice little 3G phone, especially for its price. I recently purchased a Nokia n95 on contract from another network, and I decided to buy this phone as a cheap pay as you go handset for emergencies/diverting calls to. First off, I'm actually suprised people have things to winge about this phone (not including the problems people have had with hardware/software), especially as it only costs £59.99 with a bluetooth headset free too! The phones really smart, it's easy to use, looks pretty nice and has some really decent features (3G, 1.3 mega pixel camera, web browsing, mp3 player etc.) - much to my suprise (even the quality of the camera is good - well in daylight). Some negative points though. The texting seems slow to update, and there is no flash on the camera. Yet, I didn't expect this anyways especially for the price (even the w880i Sony Ericsson phone doesnt have a flash). All in all, it's a bargain in my eyes for a 3G handset. I tested the video calling with my Nokia n95, and it worked fine :). If you want a slightly better 3G phone; then for an extra £20 - £40 - then the Sony Ericsson k610i is the perfect handset.

Hi all, i have got many email asking about these trouble with O2 ice, and they asked me why i didnt post how to solve these to this forum. Ok, everyone know that, there are many trouble with O2 ice, so i just want show you exactly your trouble when you email me, but after some days, i realize that i have no time to asnwer all email, so i am going to post some basic solution here. O2 ice got 2 main trouble: can not recognize memory card ( that the reason why you can not open sound or images folder ), low voice speaker... ---About the memory card: after buying any sd card, using memory card reader to format the card on your computer ( choose FAT not FAT32 ), after that put your sd card into the O2 ice ( this is so important, when you put your sd card after formating into O2 ice, it will automatically copy some source into the sd card to recognize each other ) Ok, if you do exactly, now you can take your sd card out off the O2 ice and copy any sound or any picture on it ---About low voice speaker: and you can not hear any ring tone, it's too easy. Using SoundForce or GoldWave software to gain up the sound quantity of your mp3 file, now you can hear your call...hehe If someone got some different trouble, post here, remember my name Tran Hieu and i am from Viet Nam. [Editor's comment: Thanks to Tran Hieu for taking the time to answer people's problems :)]

I love this phone everyone keeps banging on about it not being loud when you play music but I dont want to be one of those irritating nobs who annoy people on the bus by playing loud music on their phone! Im happy with it. I had a problem connecting it with the pc through usb as I was used to my old phone doing it automaticaly but all you have to do is go into connection settings at set it to 'usb' and 'mass storage' and it works like a charm. This might be what some other people are having problems with.

wot are u lot talking about. This phone does exactly wot it says on the tin and its stupidly cheap. If you want something really high standard thats sounds greats, looks great and puts on little skits for u after dinner then you have to pay big bucks for it. The mp3 player and the camera are both good for the money but if u want something really high quality dont be such a cheapskate and buy a standalone mp3 player or a proper digital camera. On the whole, very easy to use, looks ok and definately worth £45.

I had been looking for a phone for a while, say this phone in the argos catalogue. looked like a great phone for the price. even came with a free 512mb card. {thhough not an offical one}. The phone worked fine until i inserted the memory card. I knew the card had been inserted but when i tried to take a picture and save it to the card it said the card was full. i checked the memory status card size 0mb. space free 0mb. photos 0mb etc. I couldn't save to the card. Although the card worked fine in my PC`s card reader. i take the phone back to argos and exchane it for anther o2 ice. the card still does nt work. i exchange the card and the phone again and it still does not work. don`t buy this phone if you want to take lots of pictures as it does not appear to work with memory cards. (strangely on the first o2 ice phone it did work, utill i turned the phone off and on again). I have manged to remove 3 o2 ice phoens though as i have used all of them so argos are thus unable to sell them again.

The aesthetics of the phones are quite satisfying; the keys are well-pronounced and the screen is clear enough to go about your daily business. The functionality, however, leaves an awful lot to be desired. It is compatible with almost no games on the market and, after being repeatedly hassled to sign up to their "amazing" O2 extra service - with promise of a free game - I was quite predictably disappointed as the service informs me that my handset cannot operate the games offered on their service. The camera is acceptable, but loses a lot of its functionality when the menus themselves become mysteriously inaccessible, after only a few months of careful handling. The MP3 playback functionality would be useful if the stock speaker could actually exceed 15dB; although I usually prefer to use my standalone MP3 player, in the absence of charge for it, I found the O2 Ice to be completely incompetent in the field of practical and audible MP3 playback. I cannot comment on the headset's functionality, having not yet used it. As I prefer to use MP3s in a higher bitrate, Gaping flaws aside, we have a fairly minimal but sleek handset. The phone itself is quite stylish and definitely accomplishes the basic cellphone functions with a little finesse. If only the peripheral functions were more useful.

I think there are potentially two problems with this phone: a) Good firmware or bad firmware; b) iffy quality control. I might have been lucky in getting a very good one (original source Woolworths), and as a good one, I really don't have any complaints as such. It's very easy and fast to use, I get on great with the buttons, and I haven't had any problems with software, microSD card (I use a genuine Sandisk 1gb card - I think there are memory cards, and there are memory cards, not all in the same league at all), files, using my MP3's as ringtones, etc. Properly charged, the battery life is very accepable (I get a full days use out of it no problem, plus I left it switched on at home when I went away for 10 days holiday, it was still on when I got back, which seems fine to me). If you get a bad one, just like with a bad 'anything', that's got to be the pits. I think easy access to firmware versions might sort out a lot of people's problems? One thing I would really like to be able to do with this phone, is get it unlocked. I travel in areas with zero O2 reception, and need to be able to put in Sim that works in that area. I phoned O2 about it, and they said they would unlock it for me after I have had it for a year. That is NOT good business sense, and means I am actually using the O2 service a lot less than I otherwise would. In Finland it is illegal to sell phones that are locked, and the mobile market thrives there. We need such legislation in the UK, imo. So write/e-mail your MP's about it (it's what they are there for).

Despite putting on settings for media messaging still couldnt send or receive media messages nor use o2 active .Went back to the shop twice with it - they replaced the SIM card- still same problems! Sound was dreadful too- could not hear ringtone if it rang in a crowd! In the end took it back to the shop and got a refund - as far as I was concerned the phone was faulty. They told me in the shop that they had not had any other problems with any other Ice phones, but after seeing these reviews i am not so sure...DO NOT BUY!!!!!! Thinking abot the SE K750i or the Nokia 6230i ???? Neither could be worse than the Ice.

***Lets cut the bull, the phones gr8, nli 1 major drawback, if you're a teenager used to music blasted out as loud as possible, it aint 4 u, qualities gr8, but is barely audible, especially in crowded areas. U will need a Micro SD memory card.*** Excellent buy 4 price on market.

don't buy it if you want to use a phone. just going into the inbox takes such a long time! and my call logs just stopped working a few days ago! not to forget that this phone can NEVER read any of my sd cards... i'd hate it if i have to send the phone back to o2 for a few weeks to get things sorted out.

this is possibly the best phone available on the market, i paid just £50 for mine at o2 and got both the free bluetooth headset and £10 airtime to boot. the phone is extremely light in both colour and weight, the camera is 1.3mp but this is in no way a bad camera as i have taken shots that look as good if not better than my brothers 2mp camera. video calling isn't too bad for the price some lag but nothing to effect the fun or novelty as for the features on the phone the mp3 player on the phone is great whether you listen to it through the loud speaker (which is better than anything that sony ericson has ever created) when you listen to it through the headphones the added bass really does change the quality of the song, i would go as far to say that the mp3 player on this phone is better than apples very own ipod (for sound quality) the large buttons make it extrodanry easy to text. other features like the games are good fun, with free ones available from O2 it has all the ot her standards on other far more expensive mobiles and that is why i guess this is the best phone on the market at a third of the price of so called far better sony ericsons, don't get them get this than buy a sd card and save yourself about £80, then just lie back and listen to the best sounding mp3 player you've ever heard thank for reading this review Graham

I don't understand why so many people are disappointed with this phone. At the end of the day it's extremely cheap and if you buy it online it should come with a free Bluetooth headset and a 1GB memory card. I however personally think that the design is slightly odd, but it doesn't look bad either. The buttons are very easy to use and have excellent response rates too, so it's a godsend for people who like to send text messages. The camera is acceptable and pretty much what you'd expect for a 1.3MP phone camera. I've seen much worse. The typical features such as video playback and expandable memory are also major attractions. Overall I think this is an excellent value handset with many of the features you would find on other phones triple the price.

my trusty but busted nokia 7600 eventually stopped working and CHEAP replacement o2 PAYG handsets aren't that easy to come by, especially on the high street, and on a sunday ... woolworths had this for £55 and i saw nothing that much cheaper. and it was pretty .. but that's about all it is. by the following friday i took it back for a refund. i can't see how the manafacturers could possibly have "tested" this before releasing it for sale .. everything, pretty much, is poorly layed out, thought out. the ringtones are AWFUL and pretty much inaudible .. the profiles are poorly implemented .. the shortcuts are ill-considered .. sending a text message is a faff ... the camera isn't too bad - a lot of reviews here moaning about it but i got some ok results, i liked the adjustable "white balance" and various modes ... i liked the easy to use software disk too. i am now using a friends ancient nokia 5210 ... which is FAR better .. until a replacement sony k510i arrives, here's hoping that will be better .. i can't recommend this phone to anyone.

Had this phone since Sept, been back to the shop 3 times with it already! Had to go back for repair early on cos sound was faulty. Now despite putting on settings for media messaging and contacting o2 head office I still can't send or receive media messages nor use o2 active. The shop can't sort the problem so I am going to have to go back yet again and moan. Think i have got a rogue phone but no one wants to do anything about it!!

I bought this phone for my daughter for Christmas. I was impressed with the specifications and paid £69 for it from the O2 online shop. The deal included a free Bluetooth headset... Everything works well. It's easy to send texts, the mp3 player is acceptable, as is the camera and the menus are very easy to navigate. If you're looking for a phone with plenty of features and don't want to spend a fortune, this is the phone for you. Very impressive!

Its a very good phone and the camera is extremly clear and looks better than the 1.3 on the d500! Once 02 bring a slide to the middle market it will sell extremely well! and i got the first review!
