Nokia N93 Review
Phone
rating:
The Nokia N93 is a 3G SmartPhone
with outstanding photographic capabilities, a great music player
and all the bells and whistles that you can imagine. But this comes
at a price, and not just a monetary one - it's the biggest, heaviest
phone ever made, excluding a small number of phones with PDA-like
functions.
The N93 has a twist-and-flip design
that can be moved into 4 different positions: closed when not in
use, folded open for talking, a camera mode and a viewing mode.
It's a concept that works well and enables the outstanding photographic
capabilities of the device to be used conveniently. The keypad is
nice to use, with large clearly-defined keys, unlike some of the
other Nseries SmartPhones. There's a small external screen that
displays basic information, and a fantastic internal screen. The
main screen is a slightly lower resolution than the N90,
but at 2.4 inches it's physically larger than most Nseries phones,
and gives excellent colour reproduction and good visibility in sunlight.
There are dedicated keys for using the camera, including keys for
the flash and zoom. Build quality is very high and physically the
design of the N93 is superb, apart from the massive size and weight!
The N93 has an outstanding camera,
and it's worth listing the specs in detail:
- 3.2 megapixels (2048 x 1536
pixels) CMOS sensor
- Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens
- 3x optical zoom
- 20x digital zoom
- Auto focus
- Auto exposure - center weighted
- Integrated flash (operating
range up to 1.5m)
- Macro mode
The video recorder has the following
specs:
- MPEG-4 or 3GP format
- VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels)
- 30 fps
- 3x optical zoom
- 8x digital zoom
- Audio recording: AAC stereo,
48kHz
- Duration: up to 60 minutes
- Movie director for automated
video production
Broadly speaking, the camera is
as good as that on the Sony Ericsson
K800i, and the video camera is better. The N93 really sets the
benchmark for camera phones.
The N93 also comes with a superb
music player that supports a wide range of formats with high quality
stereo output via headphones, with playlists and an equalizer. The
supplied software is excellent - Nokia Music Manager handles one
click CD ripping, converting and transferring music to your device
- and Windows Media Player helps you to manage your PC music library.
USB mass storage enables drag and drop functionality, and up to
2 Gbytes of storage is supported (a 128 Mbyte card is supplied).
In addition to the media player, there's a built-in FM radio with
support for Visual Radio. You can even use the Wi-Fi connection
to play video, music and photos on a compatible TV, hifi or PC.
Full connectivity is supported:
Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 (with USB mass storage), Infrared, Wireless
LAN (802.11 b/g) & TV-Out. 3G data transfer enables high-speed downloads
of up to 384 kbps. A full web browser is included, and the email
client handles various kinds of attachments.
Really, the N93 is an incredible
device with nothing missing - and this is it's problem. The end
result is that it's both very expensive and very large - too big
to put in a pocket - so it's obviously not going to be a mainstream
phone. For power users who are willing to put up with the bulk,
however, the N93 really can't be beaten. Now replaced by the uprated
Nokia N93i.
Features of the Nokia N93 include:
- 3G SmartPhone (Series 60 3rd
Edition Symbian operating system)
- 3.2 megapixel (2048 x 1536 pixels)
camera, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, autofocus, 3x optical zoom,
20x digital zoom and flash
- MPEG-4 video capture of up to
30 fps at VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels)
- Digital stereo microphone
- Video and still image editors
- Main display: TFT, 262,144 colors,
320 x 240 pixels
- External display: 65,536 colours,
128 x 36 pixels
- RealPlayer media player - full-screen
video playback to view downloaded, streamed or recorded video
clips (MPEG4, RealVideo formats)
- Music player: supports MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+/WMA
with playlists and equalizer
- Stereo FM radio (87.5-108MHz
/76-90MHz) with Visual Radio support
- Messaging: SMS, MMS,
email (with attachment support for images, videos, music and documents)
- MP3 ringtones (64-voice polyphonic)
- Speaker independent name dialing
and voice commands
- Voice recorder
- Integrated hands-free speaker
- Push to Talk
- Advanced contacts database
- Java & Symbian applications
- Web browser, RSS support
- Data transfer: EGPRS class B,

- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0,
USB 2.0 (supports USB mass storage), Infrared, Wireless LAN (802.11

- Triband plus 3G

hi, dont actually own the phone, but used to really want it, i think
it looks great apart from the size. also the sound that people say
that they hear when zooming, surely that is just the optical zoom,
the same sound as a compact digital camera would make when zooming
or focusing. and one other thing, Bob you say you compared it to
the W810i, it may be just be me, but i dont think that SE meant
that phone to be compared with the N93(which costs a good £200 more
when bought new)

Now using this phone for 7months, I would say this phone is simply
great, a fully loaded mobile machine.excellent camera, superb music,
universal connectivty, easy to use, roughed and durable, flexible
storage capability, cute design and lots more. This phone has it
all. But there is only one problem I experience with my phone; the
screen will just goes off, or all keys will fail to responde for
no reason sometimes. I have to remove the battery, place it back
and switch on the phone to restore the normal functions. despite
this, Nokia N93 remains an oustanding phone.

This phone is awesome, I own it for 3 months now and it works perfect.
I'm wondering of those who compare SE camera with N93!!, N93 is
much better photos in dark, and in day light, my friend has SE-W810i
and we examined both phones in many ways, N93 won with no doubt
in all aspects except the size, better photos, louder & sharper
sound, much better video, bigger and sharper screen, software facilities
with S60 are better than SE-W810i, even it's faster in opening folders
and programs!!... Stop promoting SE over Nokia!

go to the shops to see a real life model. If only nokia would have

Ok, so this phone is big-ish. So big infact that it is easy to use,
see the screen, and text with - unlike all the small phones we seem
to 'Have to have' these days. Obviously it's easy to use, after
all, it is a Nokia - unlike my girlfriends Sony Ericsson thing.
One of the downsides however, is the calendar, it is absolute rubbish
in comparison to the previous 3 Nokia phones I have owned. The only
other bad thing about it, apart from the rubbish ring tones (that
applies to ALL mobiles though) is that sending a message can be
a bit of a long drawn-out affair, again, not on par with my previous
3 Nokia's. Otherwise very impressed and well recommended.

I used to love this mobile, when I got it. Now, when you twist it
it does nothing when it is actually supposed to change mode. The
camera mode button on the side no longer locks the phone, so I have
to open the screen to lock it. It regularly freezes and crashes
through simple tasks such as changing from silent mode to outdoor,
for example. It doesn't turn off, however, it goes dark and unresponsive,
so you have to turn it on again and wait for it to load. I will
be ringing Vodafone to change this phone. I would rather have a
cheaper phone that actually works than a 'smart' phone which doesn't
function correctly. I will probably ask to go back to my Nokia N73
as this, in the week I had it before it got wet and broke on me,
actually seemed an alright phone. At first the size of the N93 was
ok. Sure it looked and felt a lot larger than my Marine VHF Handheld
Radio, but the good camera made up for the large lump on the top.
The bits needed to go somewhere. The quality of the camera made
up for the poor looks of this phone. Now, however, it doesn't work
well and it is as useless as the big bricks that you see on American
TV shows! HUGE but Rubbish!

Ive been with Sony Ericcson now for Years and was looking forward
to the P990i but after waiting nearly a year I gave up with them
and opted to go back to Nokia, whom I had not been with for 10 years
amazing realy. The phone is brilliant, it is bulky but as a ex P900
and PDA user felt small in the hand. I love the functunality, but
here is the BUT the camera has stopped working unless i use the
self timer pathetic. Ive read many reports of camera faults and
thought ok I just need to upload the new software update to see
if this is the problem as many people had reported. To my amazement
the updates for the N93 are still in development after failures
with the last attempt; this is starting to smack of Sony ericcson.
The problem now, is shall I treat this as a warrenty issue and go
back to the distributer of the phone or is it Nokia. I wish these
phone companies would start sorting out there loyalty with the customer
who spend frigging fortunes on these type of phones, whos the mug

I just got this phone on a new contract (cheaper than upgrading)-
i got it for £50 as im on a high tarrif (£55 a month). I thought
i would get it as its the most expensive one and if i dont like
it, i can sell it for at lest £400. Anyway, i have been using it
for 10 days now and i truely love it! It is a big phone (but stylish
too in the black colour). Although i think most people would find
it to bulky, but, for tall/big people its not so bad. I my self
am tall and it doesnt look odd when i use it. However, i would not
recommend this for small(ish) people-apart from looking odd, it
would be quite challenging from a practical aspect, and, not very
convenient. For me it is perfect as i truely struggle with small
phones. The phone it self has a brilliant display-its large and
enjoys great clarity-using it with GPS is perfect! As an MP3/Media
player, its great. Off-course the Cam quality is excellent and nothing
comes close to its quality on a phone-cam. As a smartphone its very
fast too, and, much faster than the N70 and N73. It also has Wifi
which was very handy when i used it in the airport recently. The
screen swivels into laptop mode which gives a brilliant view when
browsing the net. I could have gone for the PDA type phones with
full keyboard but they are too focused on the smartphone side of
things-this phone does focus on entertainment too which i regard
as important when out of the office! Im not one to follow the crowd
and if you're after its feauture set, it shall not disappoint. Overall,
I Love it!

and video capability, people tends to forget that it edits the pictures
too. For people who rants and pants about its size and weight, hallo!
It is a smart phone and not a simple D900. It is slightly smaller
when compared to mine Palm Treo 650. Nokia doesn't loose its value
in the secondhand markt when compared to Samsung. It reads Microsoft
Office files and pdf's. Above all, mine N93 runs Tomtom navigator

Honestly, I am a litte bit disappointed with the pictures that I've
taken with this fone. The SE K800i does a better job on this, especially
during the evening. However, the Nokia N93 is the only fone that
is with a 3x optical zoom (correct me if I am wrong). Moreover It
does and excellent job on video recording even comparing it to some
D-Cam. If you just need a fone that takes good pictures, don't think
this is the right one for you as it's HUGE and expensive (comparing
it to the SE K800 and the Samsung D900). However, if you are planning
to sell your ipod and your old cam corder, this fone will definetly
be your first choice. Overall, I love my N93 because I have to do

This is a good phone. Excellent multi media. But then it is very
bulky. Despite the weight the internal memory of the phone is nothing
to write home about. Why couldn't Nokia borrow from the gigabyte
memory of N91? After placing so much good mulitmedia (video quality
and megapixels camera, fm radio) there is a scanty memory to store
the various recordings or images. Get the phone if you do not mind
the weight or small internal camera. As for me I think I would wait
for samsung to come up with something as good as before buying.
I hope I do not have to wait so long.

occur. Most recently my phone has taken to not opening files in the

This phone was an upgrade from a nokia 6230i which was bought because
i just can't get on with samsung phones, just annoying....another
story i think! As far as the Nokia N93 goes, it's a great phone,
yes it's big, but it does feel solid, i've had it for a month now
and it's going strong, i would give the phone 5 stars but it has
got (what i understand are fairly normal on nokia sybian operating
systems) a few little bugs, eg some of the videos won't play bacause
the phone thinks it's run out of memory, and occasionaly the phone
says that it's closed the application 'main' - it doesn't affect
the use, just a bit odd. The Camera on the phone is great, clear
crisp pictures which are very good on the tv output as well as on
the pc. The video is what really impressed me. I'd read the reviews
both on here and other places which claimed the video was good,
but when i first recorded one and watched it back i was amazed,
granted i was going from the nokia 6230i, but still, it's maybe
not up to dvd quality and in poor light (it's just fairly average,
but still watchable and good quality), in daylight outside the quality
is great and if you find fault with it then you will have to be
VERY picky. What i have found is that because the phone has so many
features you tend to get lost in the menus, and the other annoying
thing was the nice alarm set up as found on the 6230i, eg the repetition
days as well as the usual time etc. Battery life is a bit annoying,
but in fairness to the phone, i'm constantly checking it and i call
my girlfriend about 3-4 times a day, at least one call for an hour
or so, plus numerous texts and video watching, it lasts two days
with that use, maybe more but i don't want to be caught out with
a dead battery while out and about. I've prob used far too much
space on here now, but i honestly have no probs with the phone at
all, just the niggles i mentioned above, but overall it's a great
phone, very pleased with it, should last me the 18 months i'm stuck
with it for!! Unless you're one of those people who hate nokia's
i don't think you'll be dissappointed.

I am planing to buy this one! I have research and compared it to
any other phone and all I can say that this phone is the best of
all. And I think this is better than pda. No need to buy ipoad,
coz 2gig ipoad is too expensive compare to the prize of the microSDcard,
I assume that it can also support 4gig sdcards, which is more much
lesser in price if you love music compare of having ipoad! I am
working to have this soon,..go n93!!! but I think n95 is better
than this one anyways

So far so good (this is not a teeny rave review). Yes it is larger
and heavier than many, but that's an advantage when searching for
it in a big handbag! It has a nice, solid, well made feel to the
construction with the exception of the back of the battery case
which is a bit plasticy. Camera - excellent. Radio reception is
100% better than the 6260. Slight flaws - you can't turn the camera
sounds off unless you switch the whole phone to silent profile (Nokia,
hello, WEDDINGS!! CHRISTENINGS!!! The one great thing about digital
cameras is that they don't make loud clicking noises, SO WHY PUT
ONE IN!!!). Also, the covering over the attachment interface isn't
connected to the camera - I've already lost mine. And, the button
that activates the flash (NB very useful torch) is on the outside
edge, very easy to switch on accidentally and drain the battery.
But, best phone so far, the 6260 is in the bin (tacky, badly constructed,
too many buttons for simple things)

is the best. It really gives me a great feeling in my hands. The
camera is great but not greater that Sony's K800. Reception quality
is great. It has all the features that you need in the day to day
activities. Screen is great. Viewing photos and videos is a great

well you could say this is just a phone, you could say this is just
another caget ( well suppose you could say that actually ) , you
could say its not worth the money or it the technology will be last
weeks news within a couple months but to be honest you'd be stupid
to think that. this phone not only has a 3.2 mega pixel camera 30
frames per second but all the additional features on this phone
means it will stand out as one of the best well into the next year
or two. besides its obvious weight and bulk, due to the camera and
general good quality parts that went into making this outstanding
phone, its surprisingly quick when loading, robust and you'd be
surprised at how easily you can carry this around without noticing.
the only downside to this mobile is its price, i'm on a contract
deal of £40 a month with 500 mins and 250 texts but i had to pay
120 just for the phone, where i could or probably gotten a much
better deal and free phone with another n series nokia but to be
h onest its worth every peny. to sum up, this nokia n93 is way ahead
of any mobile currently out or that is going to be released in the
year. its expensive, its big , its heavy but its good quality ,
fast, amazingly well set out , good sound quality , good video quality
, good signal , phone calls sound better than using your house phone
, good graphics, what else...easy to use , stunning looks , always
gets people looking when you twist this :), i could go on and its
nokia!! they never let you down. to sum up even better, buy this
phone ! you will not regret it. ( just save up:) ) hope this helps
in some way.
