Nokia N82 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A good alternative to the N95, the N81 offers very nearly the same features, but at a significantly lower price. It's a classic-style smartphone with GPS navigation, an outstanding 5 megapixel camera, media player, wireless LAN, a 2 Gbyte memory card and HSDPA for accelerated 3G connectivity.

Review: November 2007.

The Nokia N95 has been Nokia's best-selling smartphone of 2007, and with sales remaining strong and with no clear competitor from the other manufacturers, the N95 will probably continue to sell well into 2008. The role of the N82 then, is not to push the boundaries of technology any further, rather it's to offer essentially the same features as the N95, but in a different package that will broaden its appeal.

Although they look quite different, the specifications of the N82 and N95 are so nearly identical, that we'll refer you to our in-depth review of the Nokia N95 to learn more. The detailed specification is listed below. Suffice to say that you can't really get more from a phone than you can from the N82: possibly the best camera in a mobile phone (5 megapixels with autofocus and xenon flash), GPS navigation, a superb screen, high-speed 3G, WLAN, a huge memory, etc, etc.

Instead of repeating all of the things that we talked about in our N95 review, let's focus on the differences between the N82 and N95. Probably the most significant difference is the price: the N82 should retail for around £150 less than the N95. That's a big difference and presumably reflects the fact that this is repackaged technology. For this reason, we are hoping that the N82 will be less buggy than initial versions of the N95, although we've yet to see a Series 60 phone that didn't have some bugs. The screen on the N82 is slightly smaller, but the phone itself is slightly narrower and slimmer too. The weight is slightly less, but not enough to make any real difference. We prefer the keypad of the N95 - the N82 has fiddly little buttons - but with fewer "extra" buttons, the N82 arguably has a simpler user interface. One further difference is that the N82 ships with a 2 Gbyte memory card, whereas the N95 comes with a 4 or 8 Gbyte card.

The N82 may not have the looks of the N95, but is has 95% of the features for a lot less money, and we think that it deserves to be a hit!

I have had the Nokia N82 for 7 days now and I must congratulate Nokia on their ability to cram so many features into one handset. This phone has absolutely everything you could wish for in a mobile phone and a little bit more! The 5mp camera takes the best photo's I have seen from a mobile, and I've had a few! The picture editing software is fantastic and allows you to perform a whole array of tricks with your pictures. The video camera is superb with great sound quality too. The Sat Nav works well provided you are not in too built up an area which makes finding a signal difficult. The userface for the Sat Nav is a little annoying, I have difficulty at times finding a location, the absence of a postcode finder being the main reason for this issue. The software that come bundeled with the phone is very good, a whole lot better than that provided with sony ericsson phones.Wifi connectivity, good multi-media player and HDSPA 3G are all impressive additional features. This handset was a replacement for a Sony Ericsson W850i and having looked at all the other handsets currently available I am satisfied I have picked a replacement that leaves my previous handset well and truly in the shade. On the downside the battery life is poor, requiring to be charged every other day. The OS is also a disappointment, my phone has froze on me on 4 occasions. This seems to be brought on if you try to use functions too quickly, the processor just seems unable to cope. If you can put up with these relatively minor issues then this phone is the current market leader.

I love my gadgets and phones and so far this is my favourite gadget and phone rolled into one!!!,if your looking for a new phone which contains so much THE NOKIA "N82" IS THE ONE.

I've had the Sony Ericsson K800i for 18 months and it was time to upgrade. I haven't had a Nokia for years and they seemed to get a slating just lately so I was a bit jubious about getting one. How wrong could I have been, this phone is fantastic, there isn't really anything I don't like about it, I haven't tried the GPS yet but if it's not so good it doesn't matter as I have a Tom Tom but I've heard it's quite good. The OS seems fine, it's fast navigating around the menu options. The camera and video camera quality is outstanding, far better than the equivalent Sony Ericsson. Wireless internet is pretty fast, text messaging a joy and the battery life is fine. Please ignore any bad reviews on here because this is without doubt the best handset out at the moment - go buy it!!

I have had this phone for two weeks and I love this phone. I think this phone is the best phone out. It has the best camera available, beating the I phone. It is so easy to use. It also has a pretty good battery life. I can play MP3 and do gprs and play games for a load of hours before needing to charge again. The menus are easily customisable making the phone suit ur needs. The internet is really good too. The GPRS takes a minute to locate your position, but what do u expect from a fon that is trying to connect through objects flying through space. The screen tilt is not a problem and u can turn it off if you want to. Overal, better at internet than black berry. better than i phone on camera, and better than all the rest in terms of functions. BTW the black colour makes the phone look proper business like and stylish.

Although I loved my Sony Erricsson K800i, I was looking for a phone with a bit more functionality. I looked at the Nokia N95 8mb, but was put off by the slide design which I felt would break easily. I am quite hard on my phones and as it is nigh on impossible to get a new 12 month contract, felt I needed to look for a phone that was more robust in order to last 18 months. I thought I'd found the answer in the N82. The phone has all the bells and whistles of its bigger brother, but unfortunatly all of its faults. I find the operating system painfully slow, to the extent that when you press a key, the lack of response makes you doubt whether or not you actually did! The OS is also not as intuitive as the Sony. Although the design should be better able to live up to the day to day knocks and scrapes of being pulled out of pockets and jangled around with loose change, regrettably the build quality is REALLY poor. The keypad is plasticky and squeaks. This phone is less than 2 weeks old - I sincerely doubt it will last 12 months let alone 18! The biggest problem, however is the battery life. When researching the N95, I read some (ie a lot of) reviews which highlighted this shortcoming of that phone. I challenged Vodafone (who I was with at that time) who laughed and said that battery life was only a problem for heavy users and with my usage there should be no problem. I was a little reassured by this and when I discovered the N82 thought I shouldn't have an issue. Wrong, wrong, wrong! As I said, I don't feel I am a particularly high user, but the battery needs charging every night. I get less than 30 hours of life from it which is unacceptable. OK, so why give the phone 2 stars? Well, I have to give it some credit for packing so much in to the phone: 5mp Camera is excellent, I like Wifi functionality and Sat Nav works OK. True, it is no TomTom - its route choices are sometimes questionable, placing too much emphasis on Motorways and it crashed twice when I was late on my way to a wedding, and Nokia maps aren't the most up-to-date. The big screen is an improvement on the Sony as it makes browsing easier. If you can put up with the apalling battery life and the sticky operating system then this is the phone for you. For me, I am counting down the next 17 1/2 months before I can trade in for another Sony!

Anton - I got my n82 on Orange (through Carphone Warehouse only to find that I could get the black one from Orange a few weeks later with £180 cashback - £180 down the drain! Orange had also told me that they would never do Nseries handsets ever again – don’t trust them they just lie. ) and had the same problem with the firmware but I contacted Nokia myself. They replied me within 2 days and I found that there was an update for the software updater. Now you can download firmware 20... which is GREAT. This is probably the BEST PHONE out there at the moment (maybe even better than the upcoming Nokia n96 due to the n82's better battery and Xenon flash). The new firmware is amazing and now when you take a photo it adds the location of where you took it, to the photo. This is a perfect phone and if you get it I urge you to make the best use of the S60 platform by downloading applications: I have the Shakelock application on my phone so that WHEN I SHAKE MY PHONE IT LOCKS. Also go to the Nokia Beta Labs website and download the Nokia STEP COUNTER -THIS COUNTS THE NUMBER OFF STEPS YOU TAKE USING THE PHONE'S ACCELEROMETER. (And it actually works!) There are loads of other applications these are just 2 of my favourites. GET THIS PHONE IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, YOU WOULD BE STUPID IF YOU DIDN'T (sorry but it is true).

I just bought the N82 and I was quite surprised. Because of the previous Nokia smart phones, I expected it to be thicker than it was. It is a nicer looking phone than I thought it was going to be. As for the camera, I think it is the best camera phone I have EVER seen. It is even better than my 8mp digital camera which is Sony. The screen is very clear, and the buttons are easier to use than I expected because of the small size. The GPS is very useful and in my opinion it is even better than google maps. In the end I decided to buy the titanium version of the phone as it looks very professional. Being a full time business woman, I had a hard time finding which phone would suit all my requirements. But this phone has a thumbs up, and to all people who are looking for a multi - tasking phone, this is the ONE! I was so delighted. Thanks Nokia, for releasing the best phone in the world! P.S I was very close to buying the blackberry pearl until I went to the phone shop and saw what a disappointment it was! In soon discovered the N82 phone and I new it was the phone from heaven! It was quite a shock because I have always been Sony Ericsson biassed. If anyone is looking for a new phone , this is IT!

After having being a "nokia boy" all my life, a few years back I switched to the SE W800i. After the contract period expired, I got the pathetically slow nokia n73 so after weeks of frustration, I reverted to using my trusty SE w800i. Not wanting to have the same problems of slow operating systems as i did with the n73, i researched the n82 a lot, though only wanted it on orange. I finally got mine semi-officially on the Orange network through mobiles.co.uk (part of the carphone warehouse); apparently, orange themselves have alledgedly ditched many nokia "n" series due to a few too many faults. I dunno...! The phone itself is very highly spec'ed, brilliant piece of kit. Yes slightly small keys, but unless you're a mal co-ordinated, ham-fisted bloke (or lady?!) then you should be fine. If in doubt, go into a shop and have a play first. Those that complain about key-size have no right to do so - have a quick play first. The phone itself isn't tiny, battery life may not be amazingly long, but my main issue is that nokia really "messed up" (no swear words allowed on this site - fair enough!) with the firmware, or at least with mine. My n82 shipped with firmware v10.xxx, which I upgraded at home to v11.xxx which was very buggy. I then tried to upgrade to v20.xxx though was unable to using my home or work computers (I work in IT and do similar things all the time). Nor could the carphone warehouse (nokia's authorised repair centre) upgrade it to v20.xxx, so it had to be shipped back to nokia to be reflashed. The carphone warehouse told me it would be done in 24 hours. I mean, how tricky can it be to upgrade firmware? Its taken over a month for nokia to get it fixed (as we speak, its at the carphone warehouse's warehouse on its return journey home to london. Fantastically bad service from both nokia and the carphone warehouse). The moral of the story: if you are getting this phone, make sure its got firmware v20.xxx or newer and be aware that nokia's firmware software isn't that great, nor is the speed of their service / repairs. I've been paying extra for a data tariff which I haven't really been able to use. Would i buy this phone again? Almost certainly but its a shame they can't ship the product when its ready, not when its still got more bugs than a trucker's windscreen. 5* for phone hardware and features 4* for looks and design 1* for firmware 1* for shipping me a product that didn't work properly out of the box and for awful customer service at nokia (and CPW).

I don't like how the N82 looks and I're not keen on its keypad, but it's such a good phone in terms of features that we're prepared to overlook its aesthetic shortcomings. This is how the N95 should've been -- from the camera to the GPS, everything works as you expect it to. Fingers crossed Nokia manages to squash all of this into a smaller, more attractive handset next time round

I was reluctant to change from my ancient Nokia 7610 because that phone really served its purpose, but after narrowing my choices between the N95 and the N82, I finally got an N82 (the reason being that flip and slide phones do not last long with me as I am very rough with my mobile)... so the monoblock N82 it was, and I couldn't have made a better choice. The only thing this phone doesn't do is make pizza. The camera is superb and browsing on the internet is a joy. The screen is just the right size and the weight, size and shape sits comfortably in my hands. I'd marry my phone if I could!

It seems Nokia seems to have lost its quality control, there is no stability in the design and the software. The entire device looks to be the work of some amateur, average science student on a project to secure pass marks. The more bigger this company has become, it has become much arrogant and irresponsible towards the customer satisfaction. It looks Nokia gives a damn for any customer feedback. The day is not far, when they will ultimately face the true burnout. Nokia N82 truly, a huge disappointment to me atleast.

However this N82 has a discreet Orange logo on the back (5mm x 5mm) and I have removed the Orange software. However you can deselect the Orange sidebar and use the standard version if you prefer. I actually have an N95 - 8GB too and I prefer the candy bar styling of the N82. The camera is better IMO than the N95 especially when using the flash. I've added an 8GB Sandisk Micro SDHC card and the sound quality from the Music Player is superb. I've had no crashes, quality is high and it has a brighter screen than my N95. Spoke to carphone warehouse again who didn't believe that my phone could do this so after I had my computer repaired I plugged it in again and hey presto it did it again...absolute nightmare. It is currently being repaired but now my husbands is doing the same thing. My N82 is back being "repaired" for the second time in two months, one more time and I can swap the phone for a different model that works. All the features of a PC but alas all the problems as well.

I've had this a month now, and I'd thoroughly recommend it. All the features are brilliant - and they actually work! I initially had problems with crashing when the gallery application was used, but after a firmware update, the phone has been perfect. I regularly have the music player, GMail, the browser, MSN and nokia maps all running at once, and the phone doesn't slow down at all, which is really cool. The camera is brilliant, and having a real flash on it makes all the difference. Having a proper lens cover is good too. The GPS is a bit slow to get started indoors, but that's expected, and outdoors it's incredibly useful because I am an idiot and get lost quite often. Having WiFi is useful because if there's WiFi available it's far cheaper and faster than mobile data. The latest firmware works with WPA2, despite what some threads on Nokia's forum say. I haven't got VPN working yet though, which is annoying. The TV-out cable works as well as expected, and it's really quite a cool feature to have for showing people photos/videos. Bluetooth is fine, but very limited compared to what most SE phones offer. I initially didn't like the keypad, but after two weeks I could type on it without looking - it's really useful having such well defined keys, and I'd say it's the best keypad I've ever used. The quality of the MP3 player is good with headphones, but the built-in speakers are terrible. That's ok though because playing music on your phone speakers is incredibly anti-social and always sounds rubbish. Battery life is pretty poor - I only really get about three days out of it maximum, and generally charge it every other day. The phone is very bulky, but I don't mind that because the display is nice and big. Overall though, this is a really great phone, and I'm extremely happy with it.

Had this phone on O2 for about 2 months now. AT first I was really disappointed as it kept crashing and the OS was really buggy and slow. The most annoying thing was that it simply refused to save any playlists and crashed whenever I tried. A new firmware was available from Nokia, but thanks to O2 locking the phone I could not install it. However, thanks to some technical gig-wizardry I changed the product code from O2 locked to generic Euro1 and got the new, non O2, firmware. What a difference. The OS is about 70% faster and the phone no longer crashes. Also it now saves my playlists! Woohoo!. Battery life is a bit short, but not really too much of a problem as I keep a car charger handy. The features are awesome - everything you'll ever need. Camera is excellent as is the GPS. I have full navigation included in my package too which is very, very good. All in all, after the firmware upgrade, an excellent buy!

Quite simply awful. Extremely slow at first use without any photos on it to slow it down, get's progressively slower the more you add. I expect navigation to be fast and painless these days, not a waiting bar as you zoom in on a photo, or appearing photos, menus etc. The phone as a camera cannot stand on it's own to do timing photos. Navigation key looks like it's going to break off any second. Screen isn't very sharp. I've been a staunch Nokia fan and user for many years, but this was my first N-series and I'm not impressed. I can't understand all the good reviews, I find this phone simply unusable. My last phone was a K800i, which worst point was a fiddly navigation joystick, but it is better build quality, software, camera and better in so many other ways. Now I'm just testing a K850i and at first look it is much better than the N82. My advice is try before you buy and don't solely rely on the feedback on this site - I read all the reviews of various phones and I don't agree, the N82 is not for me and I don't think it's fast, amazing, etc etc. I use email, web browsing, lots of photos, videos, sms, rss, alarm, timer, notes and to me it seems Nokia have gone from being the builder of solid phones to flimsy ones, they must be outsourcing.

I now own an N82 and I'd like to say how I feel about the phone for all who are thinking of buying one. If all you want is a device that makes phone calls, save your money and don't buy this magnificent tool. My first mobile was a BT "brick" in 1989 and eventually I ended up with the Sony "MarsBar" before they joined Ericsson. After that, I only ever used Sony Ericssons. I wanted to upgrade to the K850 but read some poor reviews so I ended up with the N82. I think that calling the Nokia N82 a "mobile phone" is grossly unfair to what it actually is. This is the most extraordinary piece of equipment I think I've ever used - and I've been a database system engineer for a quarter of a century. I thought I'd seen it all. The Phone - it works, its a phone, usual bells and whistles. Thats got that out of the way. The build quality - compared to the Sony's I have to say it feels much better quality, less bling and more sophisticated zing! It feels as if it will last forever, and it looks powerful in a very subtle way - like a Merc. The software - it works properly and updates the phone effortlessly. Transferring files and music is simple. The menu - exceptional, clear and faultless. It just keeps on going - When you think you've found everything it does, you then come across something else. For example, a barcode reader?!? that flashes a red light at the target. What? The GPS - Probably the most incredible thing I've seen. On a chip the size of my fingernail, I have the whole of Europe, down to house level, and spoken directions that will get me there, via a young lady's voice from the built-in stereo speakers - and the download of the Europe-wide map was both free and efficient. But you do need to get a 4 gig chip (£19.99 from Carphone Warehouse) because the download is 1.7gigabytes. So what do you pay extra for with the GPS? I haven't got a clue, maybe the nice lady's voice won't guide you after the three months trial - we'll wait and see! It's a full-blown satnav - even tells you how far you've jogged and shows you the satellites you're connected to. The music - Much better functioned than the Sony, and I've had their Walkmans from the beginning. Still got them! Not only a very sleek graphic equaliser, but also a spacial option that gives you "surround sound" in your headphones. Complete with playlists and all the usual features. By the way, the built in stereo speakers (not kidding) should sound rubbish. They don't. They're really very good and I can't see how. The radio - excellent sound, and also very easy to find and save stations. The headphones? Don't know, I use my Sennheisers plugged into the normal jack on the phone itself. The Pc connection - In the morning, I plug my phone into my Pc, I use the "Single Click Sync" button and about 5 seconds later, all my meetings and contacts are updated on my phone. Thats it. The front screen - The Active display shows you your appointments for today and tomorrow, reminds you when you should be in a meeting and what its about. Fully configure the shortcut bar. Connectability - this is amazing. This phone will connect directly to POP/SMTP email account and you get a choice of how you want to connect. You can use GPRS or you can even use a wireless LAN. So here you have the prospect of sitting downstairs in front of the TV browsing the internet on your phone (it's a normal browser) but connected through your wireless router upstairs. If you're staying in a hotel and they have a wireless LAN, use theirs. The Camera - This is not a mobile phone with a camera. It's a totally fully functioned high quality digital camera with a proper flash that gets the added benefit of being able to make telephone calls bundled in with it! There's even a smaller version on the front for video phone calls. Nice touches - Turn the screen on the side and it goes to landscape. It knows which way up it is! With the camera or for viewing photos or especially for the internet, its absolutly unbeatable. Applications - Apart from the barcode reader, it has a miniature version of Office, complete with spreadhseets and projects. It also has an Acrobat PDF reader, ZIP utility, games. I'm not sure where to stop here. What doesn't the phone do? It doesn't have a built in fax and printer, it doesn't run Windows XP and it doesn't have a penknife. The only minus point is the size of the keys, they're not nig. But they are positive and high quality. Just get thinner fingers!

I've had the phone for about a week now, and I think it’s amazing. Probably the best phone I have ever had. The camera is the best I’ve ever seen on a phone, the quality is superb, and the flash is a welcome addition, better than LEDs!!!! . The fact I can connect to wireless internet is a big plus, the internet runs so quickly and smoothly, plus the screen rotates when u turn the phone on its side, making it even easier to see and surf. The GPS (nokia maps) works really well, you get a voice guidance trial, but even without it, its better than my old navman. I’ve download maps for Europe and put them on to the phone with ease using the N series pc suite (maps are free). I've also managed to set up all my email accounts (Gmail, hotmail etc), plus use windows live messenger. I really looked around before deciding to opt for the N82, looking at the N95, Samsung G800 among a few. But the N82 really does have everything you could want and need. It’s not frozen on me once, switches from once application to another with speed, and in my honest opinion, beats every other phone out there at the moment. Except for maybe on the looks.

And this is what you use to interact with the device. Here is what you get as a phone. This is also the 'Cons': - Dim screen - Tiny keyboard - Short battary life Here is what you get as extras: This is also the 'Pro': - GPS - Wifi - Camera It all depends on what you mostly use it for. Unfortunately I mostly use it as a phone. P.S. If the dim screen gives you a long battery life then that can be tolerated. But 'Two stabs in the back' is a cheap thig to do in an expensive, 'top of the line' device.

So frustrated -- Episode 2: consolated. Well, finally all is back to order as the Nokia customer service facility finally accepted that I return the n82 and get my refund. I was really worried as both the online support and the call center were ignoring me or just refusing the return. Obviously we're not yet at the age of efficient phone or web support, that's for sure ! Anyway I can start again my quest for the phone that will fulfill my needs. So here is what was wrong with this purchase of the N82: 1- I decided to buy it after making a phone feature comparison on the Nokia Europe/UK website. Selecting my requirements (GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, camera) I finally ended-up selecting the N82 2- reading first a few reviews to be sure, I confirmed my choice and was left with the feeling that, being the promising next big hit after the N73, this phone would include all the features of the N73, especially the possibility to type SMS from a computer thru Bluetooth, and the most expected business card scanner 3- finding a good deal at Best-Buy, I finally bought-it after spending a few hours comparing it with the N95 and talking to Best-Buy staff 4- once home, problems start: no way to find neither the Wifi connection wizard, nor the business card scanner (there is a bar-code scanner though, that can decode business cards which have it printed, but the feature is far away from the N73 business card scanner that was able to OCR the card and put in all arranged in your contacts) 5- pushing a little further, no way to write SMS in the Nokia Lifeblog application: it's really impossible to type sms with this phoneset as a) buttons are really small b) the letters above the buttons are microscopic and c) the stainless-steel face is brighter than the letters in daylight, so the PC feature is a must at work On the positive note, I could download many maps (thru the night at it was quite slow) of the world (France, London, NY, SF, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong-kong, which left me 500 MB free on my 2 GB card) and got the GPS to work exactly as expected, giving me position, maps, routes and turn-to-turn voice and screen directions during the 1st 3 trial days of the service (after the 3 days, I could still use the maps, get the position with standalone GPS or network-using AGPS, find routes, but could not have the turn-to-turn real-time voice and screen direction until I pay the year, month or week fee). But whatever, buying a Wifi phone that has no wifi was not acceptable for me. After a little bit of research, I found out: according to one post on the net, Wifi is forbidden on cell phones sold in this country! well, I've no problem with that, every country can have its own laws. But what was not acceptable to me is that the only feature comparator available on Nokia websites selects the N82 based on the Wifi requirement, and does not mention at all that it is a country specific feature ! So you end-up selecting a phone for a feature that will not be in the same model you buy. You could argue that the Best-Buy Shanghai staff could have mentioned that there is no Wifi, but according to a few reviews I read on Best-Buy it's something you can not expect ... My conclusion: Nokia customer service was understanding, after insisting a little, and accepted the return, so finally no issue on that side (and the personnel was really charming, not like the call-center ones). However, if Nokia really want to make a great phone experience (and service), they need to change quite a few things: - stop removing great features from a phone to its successor: a) business cards scanner of the N73, is awsome, just keep it! b) ability to send SMS from the PC software - provide a global feature comparison website that clearly mentions what is or not available in the countries: not only people buying from Europe need that - create a real on-line global support service with customer caring agents who find solutions for the customers in place of their current agents who just send standard e-mails: people who buy high-end phone with GPS ... travel and need support on the go So what will be my next phone now ? With my requirements: - great camera (with optical zoom would be even better than the N82) - GPS - bluetooth & wifi - business cards scanner - send SMS from PC - not Windows, please ! Maybe a Nokia, but which one ??? Any other suggestions ? Thank you. [Editor's reply: Thanks for the update, Luc. Good luck in your quest for the perfect phone :-)]

The video is great quality from a phone, as good as the N93 which I have owned. The sat nav. is very quick to lock on even without the A-gps and is accurate. It has wifi which saves a fortune on data dowloads or even checking email if you cant be bothered to fire up your PC. Good Size: Oh dear, Nokia let themselves down BIG-TIME My first recommendation would be to make it a slider and for it to have LED lights as well; for other uses but also for the auto-focus light to be manualy turned on in any situation (cool extra). The last recommendation is for it to have infrared so that it is COMPLETE in terms of connectivity (Bluetooth, WiFi, USB, 3.5G...)

I've had this phone three weeks now and i have to say its superb.Being a sony ericsson fan i found it hard to change, but iam glad i did.The camera is the best ive seen for a long time.video is great. The menu is very easy to use,as are all the functions on the phone. If the stereo in your car has an aux lead you can you can buy a lead to connect to this and it plugs into the headphone socket, and acts just like a ipod, plus when somebody rings you it shuts off the music and speech comes through speakers just like an expensive hands free unit. Now regarding the looks of the phone i think its absolutely georgeous, the screen is crystal clear and plenty big enough for me.The key pad is small but works perfectly well, the only thing i will say is when you are texting in the daylight and your not sure where the letters are it can be a bit awkward but thats a minor detail. The phone came with a 2 gb card but i upgraded to a 6gb,i also bought a screen protector as the one on the phone was a bit soft.Creating your own shortcuts is great feature .Battery life is pretty good, average life is 2-3 days depending on what you use.No buggy problems at the moment so all in all a fantastic phone, the best the phone i,ve had for many years.Highly recommend, well done nokia

This is simply the best value for money in a mobile device in the world. A 5 MP camera, VGA video, lots of RAM and a fast processor. But GPS takes the crown - just install Nokia's Sports Tracker ans watch in amazement as the phone measures your speed, direction, and number of steps you take through built-in GPS and motion sensor. That feature alone is worth the price. The screen is a little dim and the speakers sound tinny. But both have been done to preserve battery, and hopefully some future firmware upgrade will address the issue. Call me mad, the phone in flesh actually looks beautiful to me, and better than the N95 8 GB. It certainly looks like no other phone, and is ideal for anyone who wants to stand out in a crowd full of default-choice N95. If you can live with the keypad (it is not totally broken), I think it is the best phone available.

As an N95 owner I wasn't sure there would be any point in purchasing the N82 as the reviews in some magazines and online report the phone as the candy bar version of the N95. Have to say I am glad I took the plunge, the phone is fantastic. The S60 operating system boot faster than any other N series phone and there is no delay switching between menus , even the GPS software works :). I have fat fingers but find the buttons easy to use when texting - the media key does get in the way a little for me. Only concern I have is that the front will be prone to scratches.Great job Nokia you have finally produced an N series phone worth owning

Received this phone after returning the N95 8GB to O2 before the 14 days were up, and I am stunned how good it is. Some great reviews already posted full of detail, so I'll keep it brief. This phone is superb, it is nowhere near as 'ugly' as some reviewers make out, and it knocks spots of the N95 in terms of size and the picture quality. The screen is a little smaller than that of the N95, but the resolution is excellent, and the candybar design and 'pocketability' makes this phone with all the features just SO good. I have used SE for 7 years but will now use this beaut for the next 18 months!

The N82 is essentially the N95 in candy bar form - with a smaller screen (2.4" versus 2.6" N95, 2.8" N95 8Gb) and a Xenon flash for the camera. Having come from a SE W800i, the N82 is quite different and takes some time to get used to - but is well worth it. The S60 platform is flexible, and easily as fast as other non-symbian phones; so speed is not an issue. The functionality of the phone is simply outstanding. Absolutely brilliant camera - best in class bar none - GPS positioning and MP3 player all highly functional and easy to use. The only slight downside is the styling - its not to everyone's taste and imho the N95 is more aesthetically pleasing. However, its less expensive than the N95 and has a Xenon flash - that certainly wins me over.

I have been playing with it for an hour and cos the battery had ran out I have put it on charge but even so, it is an amazing phone and I can't believe that nokia hasn't brought this phone out earlier. I have had samsungs motorolas, LGs but all the things on this phone I don't think any other manufacture can beat this mobile phone all I can say is well done to Nokia, also I have had the N95 on a previous contract and it just kept on crashing all the time, and I went thru 3 handsets and still I gave up with the N95 and tried looking for other good handsets and this N82 really does take the biscuit, you will never find such a good little phone with so many features in apart from the N95 but I think this N82 has beaten the N95 hands down.

Having experimented (thanks to O2's wicked 14 day cooling off period) with the LG Viewty, the N96 and K850i, I can honestly say the the N82 wipes th floor with them. Hands down. I've seen reviews and comments complaining the aesthetics of the N82, but trust me, it's a really nice looking phone that feels solid and best of all, its a candybar!! All the power of the N95 8GB plus MORE! Okay, so it doesn't have irDa. If you've ever wanted a phone that does pretty much everything, then thi is it and best of all, its compact and attractive in its sleek candybar housing. The camera is absolutely amazing by the way. Best cameraphone I've ever tested. Way better than the one on the Viewty, in my opinion. 9/10, as the buttonsare not ideally sized and the carousel button is annoying and completely useless. 5 star rating though.

I also had an N81 but i found the music short cut keys a problem as they would scream out my songs in silent mode (not good in the office) after an accidental push. I now have an N82 and what a great phone. Never been a big fan of smart phones due to the slow freezing software but not any more. As quick as a standard phone and the features are excellent. Every bit as good as the N95 but housed in a much better housing. 10 out of 10 well done Nokia! Camera is amazing.

For me the N73 was easily the best phone I ever had, the camera was decent if not outstanding, but the fact that it had so much functionality (sat-nav, organiser etc) and that while occasionally slow it rarely ever keeled over won it a firm place in my heart. The N82 is the spiritual successor in every way and then some! LOOKS: Looks-wise it isn't going to win any awards here lets face it... it's standard Nokia N-series candybar format, a bit plain. Functional. Having said that, it isn't ugly by any means, and personally I can't abide sliders and clamshells. I like it neat and simple, just like my quim (I kid, I kid). With regards to feel... despite still being made all of plastic (Nokia, ffs sort it out) it feels solid, much more solid than the N73 did. Less plasticky, less fragile, no creakage. Dimension-wise, it's no deeper than the N73, indeed it appears more streamlined somehow due to the design, but it is slightly wider. However, I definately prefer it. While I loved my N73, I found the buttons a pain in the rear for texting, I've reasonably large hands and would constantly mis-press due to their overly flat design. Here the N82 excels. The buttons are small and protruding... there is plenty of space around each button making for easy and pressing, and I can write texts swiftly and comfortably. I'm very happy with them. The directional pad is also very flat to the phone, whioch is good in the respect that it isn't going to fall off like the old N73 joystick, but some may find it trickier to navigate. CONNECTIVITY: The phone features a micro-USB port for PC connectivity (thank God they got rid of the horrible proprietry thing) and it is stable and steady. However, I would have much preferred it use the much more common mini-USB port for the sake of convenience, as I already have loads of cables/chargers for those lying around. Memory card (Micro SD) slot is placed on the left side, as is the charger entry (which I personally think is a poor and rather odd choice, keep it on the bottom). All inputs seem to be on the left, naturally barring the 3.5mm headphone jack situated at the top of the device. The phone also of course has the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, both of which work flawlessly, the phone picks up Wi-Fi networks quite far away actually. INTERFACE/SPEED: First thing I did when I got the phone was customise it to exactly how I had my N73, and install some apps. Then played around entering and exiting them and just generally trying to make it sweat a little. The N73 had only little memory... I believe it was roughly around 20-25MB, and when the phone had been in my hands a while it quickly ran out of free RAM, making gliding about the phone as pleasurable as swimming the River Humber in concrete shorts. In comparison, the N82 has a whopping 100MB (or just over), and the difference is like night and day. The different menus and sections open snappily. Programs open and exit swiftly, tomtom is about 3x quicker when navigating in and out and through the options, and the phone just feels 10x better than the N73 did even on its best day. This for me is a huge relief, and i'm looking forward to experimenting further with more intensive programs and reporting back with some further feedback. CAMERA/VIDEO: Ok be honest... you were really wondering about the camera, right? Is it as good as they say? How does the spangly new xenon flash fare? Well, my answer to that would be only to say that it is leagues ahead of any other camera phone I have ever used including the K800i. The flash is a proper flash, xenon as mentioned, and noticeably brighter than that of the K800i, which was the first phone to feature it. The camera is opened by flipping the switch on the back of the phone, this way of opening the lens is much less intrusive than on the N73, and importantly, it isn't going to open/close by accident in your jeans pocket. It's how they should have designed it in the first place to be honest. Stills image quality seems decent, the flash obviously helps massively in this department, but what really struck me was the video quality, it rocks! Full 640x480, 30fps, "DVD quality" (use the term loosely) video capture... and it really is smooth as a babys bum! Sound quality in the video was also very clear, and it's obvious they've improved the mic pickup and clarity on this model. What else I find awesome is the cable that comes with the phone that will plug into any modern TV, and connect it via the 3.5mm headphone jack. You can then run the phone through the TV, displaying any videos, photos you like... or even just randomly (if somewhat pointlessly) using the TV as you use the camera scree, for browsing the menus and texting etc etc. However, it's really only useful for the videos, and provides a fantastic and very speedy means of showing off what you've captured. Lastly, and perhaps as important as the good picture quality is this... the speed of the camera, both which it loads up, shuts down, and also time between pics. With the N73 it was oftn a nightmare, the phones low memry made switching between camera and OS a royal pain, and it would frequently get confused or stuck when changing between video and stills etc. Not any more... it really is leagues ahead, and taking a row of still is now painless, with no confusion and a consistently low time between shots. Yay, at last! SOUND: One area I found the N73 very weak was sound... if you had music playing through the speakers (for whatever reason) it would sound tiny and distorted at higher levels. Not so with the N82. While it's obviously never going to rival a speaker system, the stereo sound quality is noticeably improved with the N82. Overall I think it is quieter than it could and should be, but this is compensated for with much richer sound quality. Music through the speakers doesn't sound bad at all for what it is. However most impressive to me was the sound quality through a pair of good Sennheiser headphones... rich and warm with good (surprisingly good) bass. Not as good as a dedicated music phone, but it does the job. However.. the sound volume IS too quiet! Compared to the N73 it's a lot quieter especially when playing via the speakers. Nokia claim this was due to new "regulations" but come on... this is below what it should be. BATTERY: Battery life has been VERY good so far in "normal" every day use. It will drain more rapidly when listening to MP3's and using the video function, but even then you get at least a good days use out of it. Sat-Nav battery life is also very good, not too far off of the N73 which is great considering it has the receiver built-in. I also bought a spare battery off of Ebay, they're so cheap it's silly not to have a backup in case you get caught short! So far i've bought the following for my N82: *Spare Official Nokia BP-6MT Battery. *Nokia N82 car charger. *Nokia N82 screen protector. SAT-NAV: Oh yeah the Sat-Nav... will I ever stop being impressed by this thing? I brought it indoors again yesterday and it actually locks onto a signal from inside my bedroom, which has an attic above it and the walls are 1960's quality as in: good. Fair enough that's in "assisted" A-GPS mode but still impressive. I've never seen it below 3 bars at its very weakest, and sometimes it locks on so quickly from cold it actually embarasses my 'old' bluetooth SirfStar III receiver. While the Garmin Mobile XT software i'm using isn't quite as user-friendly as Tom-Tom, it is still very good and also highly accurate. For me the Sat-Nav has been the biggest strength of this phone, it has near flawless performance. NOTE: TomTom does not yet support the internal GPS of this phone or the N95, this will be addressed in a later version. Garmin XT and Route 66 are the only ones that do this as a commercial package. CONCLUSION: With the benefit of hindsight I would pay £350 for this phone again in a heartbeat, no worries. It's the ultimate multi-functional device... perfect sat-nav, fantastic photo/video quality and a great phone all in a single package. it's going to take something very special form Nokia to top this... the only major improvements I could think of that would make this the ultimate phone would be a larger touch-screen to make browsing more pelasurable. Oh, and louder volume, it is too quiet sometimes! I've had a couple of reboots, but not frequent and i'm sure upcoming firmware will iron that out. OVERALL: 9/10

I bought this phone a few weeks ago whilst over in America (I probably paid a bit too much as you can buy it direct from Nokia for £400 now!) and think it’s a great handset! As you’re probably aware it has most of the features of the N95 in a candybar format so if you’ve used and liked that or any other Symbian OS phone you’ll love this. The best feature of this phone is obviously the camera with flash (which takes great shots at night) and the excellent battery life – I’m getting 2 -3 days with some pretty heavy use! Some people may not like the keys as they’re quite small but I can honestly say I think they’re great and have no problems with them at all. The only possible downsides are the looks (it’s not the most attractive handset!) and the size but considering all the features I can live with that.

Not only that but the phone was hard to use, heavy and long winded. I took it back and asked to cancel my upgrade. they offerd me the nokia n95 which ive heard has terrible battery life, and the new ericcson which i almost succumbed to until a customer in the shop began telling me how awful it was. she was bringing hers back! I was told i couldnt and they gave me the new nokia n82 to try. This phone is absolutely phenomenal. Its user friendly, intelligent and most of all the pictures are crystal clear and professional. The video is outstanding, and.... no blurring! There is a standard minijack so you can connect the handset to any hi-fi unit. The sound quality is fantastic and loud. The handset also has stereo speakers! After falling in love with this phone, There was one major problem.. I could'nt get my mac to recognize it.
