In a nutshell:
The Nokia E63 is arguably the company's first BlackBerry-beater.
With full support for push email, attachment editing and web browsing,
an absolutely superb QWERTY keyboard, WLAN and 3G support, it meets
the full needs of the business user. The E63 also has a camera,
video calling, and a media player. It's missing HSDPA and GPS, but
these are really its only faults. Best buy: *Free* from Three
(Black) or Vodafone
Business Shop; or £99.99 on PAYG from Three
(Blue).
Review:
March 2009. Last updated August 2009.
The Nokia E63 is the little brother
of the E71 business smartphone. We liked
Nokia's E71 BlackBerry-buster a lot, awarding it 5 stars and concluding
that it was better built than the BlackBerry
Bold, had great applications,
connectivity and battery life but was beaten by the Bold on the
size of the display, memory and ease-of-use. Can the E63 address
any of these issues without compromising anything important?
Well, although we described the E63 as the E71's
little brother, it's actually a larger phone. In particular it's
13mm thick instead of 10mm. It's not any heavier though, as the
E63 and the E71 use the same battery type. One physical improvement
is the keyboard. We find the E63's keyboard even easier to use,
thanks to subtle modifications in the shape and size of keys. The
display is exactly the same as on the E71 - a 2.36 inch QVGA with
16 million colours.
Inside, the E63 is very similar to the E71, so
read our E71 review for a more detailed
description. Both phones are Symbian 9.2 SmartPhones running the
Series 60 3.1 user interface. There's a wealth of applications available
and the operating system seems to be mature and pretty much bug-free.
Some things have been removed from the E71: HSDPA has gone, but
it's still a 3G phone. GPS has gone too. The camera has been reduced
from 3.2 megapixels with autofocus to 2 megapixels with fixed focus.
One improvement is the addition of a 3.5mm headphone
jack. Hurrah! Now we can plug in any headphone we like, or plug
it into the car stereo. A Nokia stereo headset WH-102 is supplied
too.
Although the E63 isn't quite as capable as the
E71, it's still a superb all-round phone. Whether you choose the
E63 or E71, you'll find that accessing email, sending texts and
viewing web pages is very easy indeed. This is thanks to the full
QWERTY keyboard, large screen and excellent internet support.
It's not really fair to compare the E63 to the
BlackBerry Bold. A better comparison would be with the BlackBerry
8900. Now the Nokia has a real chance of coming out on top.
First, the keyboard is just as good as the BlackBerry's and the
Nokia's NaviKey works a heck of a lot better than Blackberry's
trackball. BlackBerry wins when it comes to the screen, and the
two devices draw when it comes to email and web software. The E63
has 3G, whereas the BlackBerry 8900 has to rely on EDGE, but the
BlackBerry has a better camera. We think that on balance we actually
prefer the Nokia. For its core business functions, the E63 excels.
The fact is that we're becoming spoiled for choice
when it comes to business phones that offer QWERTY keyboards and
mobile internet, but which don't compromise on other features, usability
or even size. The bottom line is that the Nokia E63 is an outstanding
phone, and offers a less expensive option for those not wanting
GPS or a top-notch camera in their phone. In fact, if you don't
need these, we'd recommend the E63 because of its outstandingly
good keyboard.

out of the interface is great. the home, contacts, calender contacts

any of the options and all the features on the phone fit hand in
hand with everyday use. The initial set up of e-mail is easy, a
lot easier than i first expected. I have this in the new black colouring

The only problem i had with this is that you have to buy seperate
memory crds and miniusb cable to transfer your tracks or data. the
QWERTY is really ncie to use and now i write long texts instead
of shorties. REally good overall phone i would advice anyone who

From the onset I'd decided that a Smartphone was what I wanted/needed,
but also decided that I would remain on PAYG which, having done
some shopping around, does limit the options. Settled on the E63
as it appeared to be the best smartphone for the money(FAR more
reasonably priced than any Blackberry) and have not looked back
since - it's an amazing phone, I love being able to collect my emails
from it, as spend a lot of time either away from a PC or unable
to access my person emails due to company policies regarding internet
usage. And very pleased with the quick access to Facebook and Windows
live messenger! I'll admit that I was initally torn between the
E63 and the E71, and chose the E63 due to it's lower cost in the
end (which also allowed me to buy some 'kit' to go with it), but

I bought one of these phones based on the reviews on this site.
I was looking to replace my Samsung J600 phone which quite frankly
was AWFUL. I wanted something I could make calls on, send texts,
do basic web browsing and the big selling point for me - e-mail.
This phone does everything I want, I wasn't overly fussed about
the lack of GPS (I'm going to get a bluetooth GPS receiver which
I can keep in my car), and I didn't need HSDPA as I already have
a Vodafone PAYG 3G dongle. Still the 3G speeds are reasonable and
I tend to use the Wifi at home. I'd also highly rate the MP3 player.
It might not be as good as some phones (I can only compare to older
Nokias and the Samsung J700 in which case the e63 is much better).
It supports podcasting and I get reasonable sound quality from the
headphones socket (the free headset included was a bit poor but
hey it was free). You can get a cable from eBay for a couple of
quid which has a microphone built in and allows you to plug in a
better pair of headphones. The camera quality isn't great but it's
fine for taking basic pictures (I find that sometimes having a camera
with me to take a picture of something for reference can be a real
bonus). It also features a light which can be used as a torch too
(although I tend to turn the phone the wrong way around and shine
it in my eyes! Doh!). Overall I'd say it's a great phone. Battery
life is a little bit less than I was used to with my Samsung phone,
but it lasted a good 18 hours or so when being used for some 3G
browsing, taking photos and videos and playing MP3s. I've found
the keyboard has taken a bit of getting used to but it feels much
better for sending texts and e-mails than using a standard keypad
and with unlimited texts and e-mail on my contract compared to a
low amount of free minutes this is what I use the most. I'd say
for personal or small business use I would rate this higher than
a Blackberry, not so sure how good the Microsoft Exchange support
is on this phone, but I certainly found it easier to setup for IMAP
e-mail on this phone than on a similar Blackberry (although I did
find the Blackberry did support push e-mail from an IMAP server
which I can't get working on the e63, but it just means I have to
manually check my mail which actually is handy as I get so many
e-mails I'd constantly be looking at the phone and not getting anything
done). So yeah great phone, especially for texting and e-mail, I
would certainly recommend it. Rob Rating:

phone calls, alarm clock, taking notes, taking pics, text, etc.
My text messages on other phones in the past were short, yes, no,
maybe etc. Now i end up writing long messages with full spelling
(predictive text is excellent), amazing phone, forget touch screen
phones which usually need two hands to do anything; this phone is
fully recommended for it's endless set of features/ positive points. Rating:

This phone really does tick all the boxes for me. There are better
phones on the market I admit but the quality of the E63 is amazing.
The 2 megapixel camera isn't top class but is fine for taking the
odd picture! It comes with both general 2G and 3G which is a big
bonus for me. I am a historian and travel around the countryside
alot. I still get amazingly good signals whereas my last phone couldn't
meat the high standard this phone produces. internet is fast as
well! I would really recommend this phone for personal use as well
as buisiness use. Hope this helps Rating:

Hi. I have just bought this model this week and I have to say that
I'm impressed with the push e-mail. I get all of my Hotmail e-mails
dropping in regularly so this saves me time because I don't have
to fire up my computer. I'm a touch typest so as a visually impaired
user it took me some time to adjust to the size of the keyboard
and the speech application works well with this phone. I must stress
the speech application is not an application which is part of the
phone. It's a separate purchase so I can use the phone just like
any other sighted person and I have access to e-mails, text messages
and web browsing. This phone is an ideal business solution and an
perfect notetaker as it came with a full version of Quick Office.
I'm not really in to the camera side of things although I have taken
the odd picture every now and then. I use an external GPS receiver
so that isn't an issue either with the phone not being equiped with
an internal GPS receiver. This phone doesn't feel cheep and the
price is just about right since those features as the GPS and an
higher spec camera are missing. Music doesn't sound that great through
the small speaker at the top but a good set of headphones will overcome
that as I find the quality of sound is nice through headphones.
It's a business oriented phone so I'm not going to slate the multi
media aspect too much. This phone is far from cheep and chearful
so I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to shell out
the £229 for the Three branded version E71. Your not missing much
buy purchasing it's little brother. Rating:

The phone's features are exceptionally good except the following:
- Scroll Keys - no where close to the blackberry. Very slow and
clumsy, try the blackberry or a touch screen PDA and you'll forget
the Nokia E63. - The hyped about phone for emails doesn't support
HTML mails. All your client emails get converted to text. You can
read your HTML email as a HTML Page though but it defeats the purpose
completely. - Poor Battery - Nokia claims 10.5 Hour to 12 Hours
talk time - with no other phone usage except for calls it doesn't
last more than 4 hours (2G) - Standby Time - at max 3-4 days Rating:

device and guess what? Ive found it. The Nokia E63 is one hell of
a phone. Internet? No problem. Email? No Problem. MP3 Player? No
problem. Everything on this phone is brilliant. The qwerty keyboard
ensures fast typing (thinking about it i couldnt actually go back
to a device without a qwerty keyboard) The phone doesnt have a rocker
switch and even though i listen to alot of music on my phone its
not really a problem as the volume can be changed by holding shift
and pressing up or down on the d pad. Overall Perfect phone and

I had this phone for three months and honestly, I never realy liked
it as I had expected. The battery charges and drains very fast.
I also had issues with the back cover. It doesn't close firmly hence
leaving some gaps that allow dust in the device. All other features,
especially email and internet services were excellent BUT not the
camera and video functionalities. Playing an MP4 file is a great
problem to the E63. I therefore would rather advice anyone looking
for a better E Series to dig deeper and settle on E71. Perfect all
round!! Thanks Rating:

this phone is amazing, so solid and sturdy, no creeks and squeeks
as is common with most nokias, it is a fraction thicker than its
brother the E71 , but i think it is much better, my reasons are
below: >easier to hold and soft touch feel is lovely >the software
runs so much smoother than the E71, (i have had both now) >it supports
all features the E71 does >it has a good camera and the 3G signal
in always full where as on the E71 i only managed 3 bars at best.
>you will not miss HSDPA because the 3G capabilities are great and
fast also there is wifi to back it up at home or at hotspots. i
have mine on the 3 network and i love it, i would pick this model
over the E71 every time, not to mention its less than half the price.!!!! Rating:

Coming from Nokia's E60, I discovered that the E63 was even better
in terms of functionality and ease of use. Of course the screen
is not as defined as the E60 but still it fares well. The qwerty
keypad is really well thought and there is even a useful predictive
function that does really well. I'm really pleased with this phone.
I'd even go further to say that E63 is better than E71. However
I have a protest to make: in mauritius, there aren't any free wifi
hotspots anymore. I actually was using a free hotspot at a well
known commercial centre but recently the owners banned me for no
reason. Everytime they see me, they block wifi access. You know,
mauritius is still stuck in colonialist and racial superiority tendencies.
They really want to make sure that the free hotspot is reserved
only for specific races. Rating:

I had many business phones before but the E63 by far is the best
phone you could get for the price range (in the philippines the
price difference between the E63 and E71 is from P8,000-P10,000).
it has a great operating system that can support many 3rd party
applications and the qwerty keyboard is far better than the E71
and its lighter. access to email and attachments via wlan or 3g
is fast and i can't say anything bad about this phone even if it
lacks gps and a 2nd camera for video calling since i don't really
need it. and since i already have a digital camera with me all the
time so the 2megapixel camera on the phone is an added bonus. battery
life is also good, it usually last 3-4 days depending how much i
use it. with this aside if your looking for a business phone that
can get you working and connected anywhere, the E63 makes me give
it 5 stars for performance and for its price. i would definitely
recommend it. Rating:

Just got an E63 which is the E71's funky little brother - no GPS
or HSDPA, but better keyboard layout and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
This really is a great phone and does everything I want - push email,
calendar, IM, VOIP, web browsing etc. For those complaining about
the built in software this is a symbian S60 OS and there is loads
of software to download. I use Profimail for email - syncs both
ways with my gmail via IMAP IDLE and supports html emails, unlike
the built in client. Fring works great for skype, as well as msn,
aim, yahoo chat, google talk etc. Smartconnect will automatically
switch between wifi and gprs data connections for all my apps. Don't
like the nokia browser? get Opera Mini. I even have putty on here
if I need to ssh into a server to fix something. Symbian may not
be as cool as android, but it's mature with loads of apps/games
and runs really fast on the E63. It's also open source now too.
Best phone I've owned. If you want a smartphone and aren't tied
to blackberry then you can't go wrong with the E71 or the E63. Rating:
