Nokia E51 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The Nokia E51 is a powerful communications device equipped with email, a wealth of organiser applications, web browser, camera and media player. With 3G HSDPA and WLAN it can connect to a wide range of networks and devices. It's also a slimline and lightweight phone that looks good and is very easy to use. In our opinion, its one of the best business phones available.
Best buy: *Free*
from Vodafone Business Shop.

The Nokia E51 is a business smartphone that is packed with useful features. It's a slim phone with classic looks, although with a rugged edge to its appearance too. Although it lacks the QWERTY keypad of a BlackBerry, it's still a competent email device, and unlike the very disappointing E50, the E51 really does deliver on its potential.

The E51 is available in a choice of three colours - black, silver and pink - although the front face of the phone remains black, with just the edge and back changing colour. Design-wise, this is a no-nonsense easy-to-use phone, with a classic shape, a nice conventional keypad and a 5-way navigation key for easy scrolling and selection. There are also some handy shortcut buttons for email, calendar, contacts and the active standby screen. On the right side is a mute key next to the volume keys. On the left side you'll find a Push to Talk key and a voice recorder key. An LED indicator is used to notify you of new email and messages, as well as missed calls. It's a nice-sized phone too, and very slim, at just 12mm. First impressions are excellent - the E51 looks and feels like a quality device.

The LCD display is a large 2-inch TFT screen with high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) and 16 million colours. An ambient light sensor is used to automatically adjust the brightness of the display. This is a great screen, and is ideally suited to the functionality of the phone. When not in use, the display reverts to active standby mode, where it shows a summary of the day's activities and provides quick access to common applications.

The primary functions of the E51 are to communicate and to organise, and it does both of these jobs well. Email support is comprehensive with support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols and attachment viewers for all common file formats. Web browsing is also competent, with a fully functional web browser doing the best it can with the available screen size. The E51 is a 3G HSDPA phone, so download speeds are fast (up to 3.6 Mbps), and it also supports quadband GSM, so you should be able to use it anywhere in the world. You can connect to a PC using a WLAN connection. The WLAN connection also enables VoIP calls.

The applications supplied with the phone include:

  • File Manager & search function
  • Organiser tools: Contacts, calendar, to-do list, weather, world clocks and a currency converter
  • Windows Live provides mobile access to Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail
  • Nokia Team Suite for organising and facilitating group conference calls, email messages, or text messages
  • Viewers for Excel, Word, PowerPoint & PDF documents
  • Active Notes for creating notes with rich text and multimedia
  • Yahoo! Go: get your email, news, maps, and more all from the same customised web page
  • ZIP file extractor
  • Support for Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite with email, file synchronisation, voice, and device management
  • Support for Symantec, F-Secure, McAfee, and Trend Micro antivirus software

You can also download and install third-party Symbian and Java applications of course.

In addition, the E51 packs in plenty of multimedia functions. These include a 2 megapixel camera with video recording and video calling capabilities. The phone includes both a music player and an FM radio too. A standard Nokia headset is supplied, which connects to the 2.5 mm headset socket, and the phone is also compatible with Bluetooth stereo headsets.

The E51 has a very generous onboard memory of 130 Mbytes to support all of the functionality, and usefully it can support microSD cards up to the new 4 Gbyte size.

Battery life isn't bad, although with slim phones there's always a compromise here. Unless you're a really heavy user you won't have a problem with the E51.

All things considered, the Nokia E51 is one of the nicest business phones that we've seen for a while. It lacks the full keypad of a BlackBerry, but apart from that limitation, this is an almost perfect implementation of a business phone. It's very easy to use, very powerful and it looks great too! There are just two issues that stop the E51 from being perfect: a tendency to freeze from time to time (all Symbian phones are the same) and a higher than average SAR rating. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Features of the Nokia E51 include:

  • Series 60 3rd Edition Symbian SmartPhone
  • 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Display: TFT, 16 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)
  • Music Player (AAC, eAAC+, WMA formats)
  • FM radio with Visual Radio support
  • MP3 ringtones
  • Speakerphone
  • Voice memo recording
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols), Instant Messaging (supports Yahoo, AOL, OMA 1.2, MSN)
  • Attachment viewer for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Symbian and Java™ MIDP 2.0 applications
  • Contacts, calendar and to-do list: supports PC synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes via Nokia PC Suite
  • Internet: xHTML web browser, WAP, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA up to 3.6 Mbps
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, InfraRed & WLAN (IEEE 802.11g)
  • Memory: 130 Mbytes plus support for microSD cards (up to 4 Gbytes)
  • WAP, GPRS, EDGE
  • Vibration alert
  • Quadband (850/900/1800/1900) plus 3G (WCDMA 850/2100)
  • Size: 115 x 46 x 12 mm
  • Weight: 100g
  • Talktime: 4.4 hours
  • Battery standby: 312 hours

I bought an E51 directly from Nokia three weeks ago and assumed it would be one of the more reliable models. Sadly this has not been the case as it features the same menu button malfunction as experienced by a number of other owners. Every so often the main menu can not be accessed and the phone has to be switched off and on again. I have the latest software (200.34.36)and no additional applications or memory card. This bug spoils what is otherwise a very good phone. Lets hope Nokia address this soon.

This is a freaking nice phone but still it stinks like the inside of a baseball glove. Simply impossible to sync the phonebook to a modern bluetooth carkit like mercedes, BMW, Audi, Opel, Vauxhall etc. How Nokia even dares to call this an executive phone, simply ridiculous, and what's more, they don't even give support. F. F. F. Nokia, just trown away money once more. Oh, I so much long for my 6130 that died on me.

Excellent phone, can't say that I have had the same issues with it being too warm either which seems to be the biggest gripe. I agree that some of the menus particularly with regards accessing contacts and sending text messages could be more intuative so if Nokia are reading please sort this out. Otherwise it connects with everything, automatically sorts out settings with the network and work very reliably. It is a business phone and you can access spreadsheets, word etc, email is also very easy to set up just tell it your email address and it configures pretty much straight away. The music side of things is adequate along with the menu issues I would have like a few more megapixels but you cannot have everything.

I've realy struggled to choose a phone for upgrade as all the phones on offer seem to have a really poor plasticy build quality or so thin they have a poor battery life. I want a phone which has good keypad, is light, easy to use and really important is voice call quality. This phone is really rock solid, good in all respects except it is a bit too heavy for my liking as I am used to ultra lightweight phones. It also exudes respectability and sensibleness. But if you want a well built, reliable phone which does what it says on the tin its a real start. Its good for playing music incidentally. Camera is absolutely fine for what I need it for - snaps of friends and photoing things to put on ebay! Recommended!

I love this phone. I am not too intelligent to tell technically which feature satisfies me the most, but remember it is a business phone. Searching quickly, messaging quickly, team management via phone call or SMS, Calender which SYNCS easily with Outlook, a non-tiring keypad - all these make it a good phone if not the best. What more does a business phone need? Absence of QWERTY keypad makes it a pseudo business phone - as I heard. But I don't need it since e-mail is not my priority.(I will switch to E71 for that purpose alone.) I typed some messages and notes for almost 40 minutes without a single pain in any finger while travelling. I was almost lured by a friend to buy N73. But the boxy feel of the phone lured me away. I rarely get carried away by technical features on Multimedia front. I read some stupid reviews in this blog about sitting on the phone etc. Mr. Editor, let such people sit on their phones and break them. Why bother when one buys a phone to sit on it. Indians are intelligent people with sensitive mind, as the world knows, but not stupid and insipid! Thanks.

I do not have an option other wise I will minus 5 rating for this worst phone ever made by NO....KIA. I will tell you what the problem is: Start HSDPA browsing and the phone will be very useful as a heater, yes very useful in winter. And the phone will start disconnecting every 5 minutes. Hell! Nokia, common! If you do not have technology don't make such bad phones. In order to use Nokia E51, you need to do the following: Turn off WLAN Turn off HSDPA/3.5G/3G Turn off Bluetooth Turn off every other useful feature. It is better if you can turn off the phone itself. Worst E51. I wish this shameless furniture company should get windup at the earliest.

I've had the Nokia E51 for 6 weeks now and already on my 3rd one. I really love the phone and have no complaints on the functionability of it even though I know I'm not using it to it's full capacity. The problem I have experienced is that the menu function button would freeze locking you out of the log, media, tools function etc. On the first time of it happening I returned it to O2 and they changed it no prob with a new phone. A week later it happened again and I worked out that if it was switched off, all functions would then return. However, I decided to return it to O2 in case it was a sign of software problems. The assistant said it was uncommon for that to happen to 2 phones so must be a corrupt SIM card affecting the phone's software. So, new SIM, new phone and 4 days later and the same problem again!! Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to return it once again to O2? Please help as otherwise really love the phone.

Hi all, frstly i;d like to say something about all uk phone owners which have difficults using their phones, like freezing, no calls , power off by itself, these problems are because of tha companies(O2, 3, etc) that are changing the menu of the phones to personalize them and it seems on some models they are doing it wrong. i reccomend to buy free or carriers phones that came with the original menu versions, woithout any logos. I personally wned many phones and never had that kind of problems. Bought my NOKIA E51 free of carriers wothout any logo and never got freezed and worked wonderfully. This NOKIA E51 is a good phone, never got freezed in 3 months of use, using tom tom navigator is very easy and never got freezed, but now after 3 months its microphone got faulty. i would had to pay postage to seller to fix it and would cost me around 40 pounds the postage cost, so i decided to investigate on inernet forums the problem. it seems it have a very unusual mic that have the amplifier built-in and it is very very difficult to brake it when you try to put a new one(well this is te tecnician's problem, not customers problem) the fact is that this problematic mic is found in many othe models like the popular e90 , 5300 5610, 6500 8600 and it seems that many many owners of the phones with this model of microphone have the same problem. EVEN many of them says that it came mic-faulty from NEW! so if you are lookin for tis phone, keep in safe the ticket of warranty because you will need it soon. I hope nokia realised the problem and will not release new models with same problem. really dont believe there is any manufacturer that will release a solid phone without issues, like was for eg 6680..really solid and good phone currently looking for a samsung g810 symbian , GPS phone which is more solid and has amazing camera features

Bought the E51 in Asia after having owned the Nokia E90 for about 1 year (switched from BLACKBERRY). I prefer the E51 for daily use due to its convenient size, quality construction & excellent design. Has all bells & whistles of a solid business phone except the QWERTY. Considering I use it mostly to read e-mails and only send short SMS's, no QWERTY is a small compromise. With WLAN + SKYPE + FRING it also has become the phone around the home. Though I still take the E90 for long haul travels, the E51 remains my phone of first choice.

First of all the E51 is a lovely phone. I'm coming from a Nokia 6300 and the only thing the 6300 have over it is a higher contrasted screen resulting in higher clarity. Nevertheless, some people complained about not being able to adjust the 6300's brightness/contrast so I guess the E51 screen will be more comfortable on the eyes for everyone in general. It's very comfortable to hold and hard to believe Nokia could cram so much feature in such a compact phone. Sorts of reminds me of the 6230 which was advance for it's time. The E51 works flawlessly and it's exorbitant list of features is a pleasure to use from making calls to websurfing, using VOIP and instant messaging services. You name it, the E51 can do it and does it all effortlessly. Originally the E51 doesn't come with a memory card in the sales package but don't worry, there's still sufficient storage room to install whatever you want to install on it. HUYGENS from SWEDEN...you can get the quick SMS feature by disabling active standby. Once you disable active standby the phone becomes somewhat like the s40 phones where the left navi-key brings up the SMS editor, right key goes into the Calendar, down key shows your contacts and up keys activate the camera. Other than disabling active standby, don't forget there's a create new sms message plugin which is first on the rows of plugins on the very active standby screen. It's also said that you can reconfigure the e-mail button to create a new sms message and go into your sms mailbox based on whether you use long or short presses. As you can see, it's very customisable and no need for complaints. It's a feature phone and can do everything except making breakfast. The only shortcoming is the milder screen in comparison to the 6300's but other than that it's miles ahead of the 6300 and the majority of phones out there.

A very good phone, with some minor issues. The video camera is acceptable and has a nigt mode switch, which helps a little in not too dark rooms. When to little light is available images become corny and somewhat green. The sound is good, FM-radio is superb. The voice command feature is superb and learns fast your voice. The user manual has several flaws (for example missing that the voice command button is the right middle button), lacking details on some complicated features, which I had to look up on the net. Nokias web page also lacks info about tachnical data, but the Nokia forum helped me on one issue. Battery becomes quite warm while speaking. Quick SMS/call menu choices are missing, but that's a small issue. Has a lot of Web/PC/Windows programs and features. Helpful PC-program. But lacks ability to show mobile image directories from the Gallery on the PC file explorer (flat file structure...). A very good robust general purpose phone for business people and others.

Very nice phone with at least a couple of shortcomings. 1. Meeting notices - there is no way to see who is on the invite list. That is such a nuisance, and a remarkable oversight for a "Business Phone". Just keeps you guessing if the right people are invited to the meeting or not. 2. Responses to meeting notices are sent out as regular emails rather than the "meeting notice response" common in Outlook. 3. List of frequently texted/emailed people is missing. My ex-phone (Sony Ericsson M600i) had this feature and I found it extremely useful. Surprised that it didn't get ported over to the S60 platform. Overall - good phone. Setting up is a piece of cake, battery life is good and WiFi is super.

Been looking into this phone for a few weeks now, after reading vareous reviews I finally picked it up today. I am so far very pleased. Over the past couple of years, I've been swapping between big smartphones for the funtionality and getting smaller ones the following year after I got annoyed with the bulk. Then returning to the larger phones the following year after I got annoyed with the lack of funtionality. I never seemed to find a good compromise between the two until now. I was going to get the E90 until I read about the E51. It has most of the power of a E90 without the bulk. It's a light, attractive, highly funtional and very powerful little phone. I'm stuck with it for a year due to my contract, but I think i'll be happy :)

Since I rarely (2 in 3 months?) use video call when I own the 5610, I opt for wi-fi instead as I have a wi-fi router installed at my house. Now I can check my mail and IMing with one hand, on the bed :D Unlike other Nokia Symbian Phone, the response time is very good. I almost experience no delay between action, save for opening the phonebook. The bad part? the two function keys are very small for my hand. That's it. Oh and the sound of the music player and the built in speaker are pretty mediocre. I still miss the ergonomic feel of the 5610 from time to time, but the E51 is indeed very very good

Too many annoyances. OK, had an E51 for about a month, here is some basic 'stuff' that doesn't work or could be much better. Much of it is fixable by adding on applications, but why pay another $100 for 5 or 6 applications when you can get phones which do all this already? My impression is that Nokia take the attitude 'its on Symbian so we cant be bothered to put basic stuff on the phone as someone can sell you that functionality for $29.95 a pop' Some of these functions you may find trivial but it was pretty much all built in to my previous basic Sony E K700i SMS - send a message and then select the person and then select the phone number - on SE you are presented with a list of the last 10 people you texted - very useful as thats who you are texting 90% of the time. Send a message to someone with several phone numbers in contacts but just one of those a mobile number and it asks if you want to send it to a landline number. Plain dumb. Start entering text and there is no function once you have the first few letters to offer longer words starting with those - so you don't need to know exactly how you spell accomo ... acomm ... accomad ...accommodation. Read a text message and want to reply? Why not have one of the two options as 'reply'. Incoming call and if you have a picture stored in contacts it presents a stupid tiny thumbnail picture thats useless. Whats the point of storing pictures in contacts? Incoming call and entry in contacts twice? Well, it wont pick the first entry or the last one (which probably have the same name) it gets confused and doenst display either ! Contacts app - cant download or upload from spreadsheet - basic functionality that shouldn't be offloaded to an application (Outlook) that not everyone has or wants to use. It also doesn't seem possible to sync a restricted set of contacts with Outlook. If it is its not easily apparent from the manual. Web access is good and the browser is good but go back a page and instead of loading the page from cache it reloads the page again which might take 30 seconds. Why? Email access works well, voice quality on calls is good, but overall, as you can read, I'm not impressed :-)

I chose this phone as a replacement for my Nokia 6310i. The 'E' series is supposed to be aimed at business users but until now most of them are disappointing bar this one. Although it has a camera which could be better thats not what I'm after. It's battery life comes close to the 6310i so I'm happy with it. There is a raft of connectivity features which has been an added bonus. If only Nokia would make some kind of extended battery like they used to for the 6310i. All in all a decent effort by Nokia. If you're thinking of a business phone then think E51 and don't bother with the others in the E series. It does me!

i've had my e51almost a week now and am mostly impressed. I upgraded from a 6300 that i totally loved and was loathe to give up. Symbian is better than expected - none of the instability i was expecting although youtube always freezes and can't get opera for symbian working properly . It has taken a bit of getting used to. I'm writing this using my handset on wireless which is fantastic and easy to set up. Biggest gripe is Orange as they block a lot of the phones functions (or never set them up correctly) and i have spent several hours on to customer services getting sim updates. Still can't access IM but am working on it. Handset is ok but not as nice build quality as the 6300 esp the keys which are plasticy and don't always register. Volume buttons on the side are way fiddly and almost impossible during a call. Loads of features though and great battery life considering all it does - i'm getting 2-3 days per charge and am online several hours a day. Wish the handset was as nice as the 6300 then i would give it 5 stars.

I downloaded the blackberry software which works very well with the phone. Problems I am having are: Phone hangs often, I have looked to see if there is a software upgrade but I have the latest version. The battery life is not great at all. I am lucky to get a day out of it. I probably make around 1-2 hours calls maximum and don't browse, use wi-fi etc. Maybe I have a dud battery. The rest of the phone features are fine. Everything is simple enough and you're getting Nokia's great build quality. I still have my doubts about their software though. My phone keeps restarting every 2-3 hours on GPRS-EDGE(even on PC).Further this happens only at home, not at other places(very creepy). This is the only real complaint and I am hoping Firmware update will fix it. I'm glad the editor has spoken out there against Bhiska, because to me the build quality seems to be excellent, a bit squeaky, but overall a quality finish. To my main review. This maybe useful to new symbian users. I upgraded to this from the brilliant 6300. A phone has to be special to match that. A year of sheer joy. it had a lot to live up to. I've never owned a symbian operating system. And from using friends, N73, E65's etc. i was really unsure if i cud ever get to grips with a seemingly more complicated way of using a mobile phone. If this is you, do not fear. The E51 is a brilliant introduction into the world of symbian. Its similar to series 40 for starters, and will take a day or so to get fully used to it. But overall it will not take anytime at all. I've always been put off a symbian due to their responsivness and reliability, but so far nothing. So far a faultless OS (as expected) As its installed with the feature pack 1 reliability is greatly increased. The keypad is a joy and easy to text, but a tad slow to aknowledge some presses. The shortcut keys are fully customisable with the ability to have the buttons set to two settings. Either one press or long press. As a result the non-number buttons can be edited a whopping 15 times!!!! the camera is a bit poor actually, showing a slight green tint. But this isnt major for me. The business applictions are great with Quick Office, Flash and Real player all supported. But the real plus to this mobile is its connectivity. Bluetooth, Infrared, USB, WLAN, PTT as well as being 3.5G its fully catered for. Also the call quality seems to be a huge improvement over the 6300, i noticed a difference instantly. On the negatives, no games come with it, but can be downloaded easily being symbian. Front video camera calling doesnt seem to be supported, which will be a turn off for some. But i dont use that, so its not really relevant. Also featured is a light senser that will adjust the brightness of not only the screen but also the keypad lights as well which is a nice touch. It also doubles up as a notification light. Overall the E51 is a great introduction into symbian, so easy to use, and if anyones put off because its symbian, trust me dont be, you wont be disappointed.

Its Very Bad build Quality.Just because there is a thin METAL backplate and a METAL rim on front and it is a bit HEAVY people think it is strong. Heavy is a big negative as it will increase the impact on fall. The screen is too near the surface. The main ckt board is directly behind Keypad and there is not much reinforcement. Contrast this to N72.Peple think it is plastic and thus weak.Actually it is VERY sturdy. The display has few milimeters distance from outer transparent panel which itself is Very thick(Unlike E51). My friend sat on a n72 and a big metal part on his belt came directly on the screen. The screen only suffered a small crack.Had it been E51 or even 6300,screen wud have shattered and PCB damaged [Editor's reply: do you actually have an E51? Sounds like speculation rather than fact. None of our reviewers have reported a problem with an E51 breaking.]

Had this phone for 3 weeks now. Swapped from my old Sony Ericsson W810i which I have owned for 2 years and LOVED. Initially i did not like this E51. The Symbian menu system was just too complicated, had so many menus and seemed slow compared to the user friendly w810i. However having now used this phone for a while it is starting to grow on me. Phsically it is a very smart phone (I have the white metal/chrome model). It is perfect weight in the hand, very slim and the buttons are perfectly spaced making it very usable. The WLAN function is fantastic and provides super fast internet access. It has just about every function under the sun and whilst the 2mp camera may not be up there with the N95 it serves a purpose which is good enough for me. The only gripes I have with this phone are - the headset is of pretty low quality - there is no text message counter, not that I have found anyway, only a message log - if anyway can correct me please do!) - when sending a message you cannot choose from a recent recipient list as per previous nokias and my trusted sony ericsson (again would like to be corrected on this if anyone knows how). Battery life seems to be pretty good. I am doing a lot of WLAN browsing at present which seems to hit it hard but once the novelty wears off i'm sure the battery life will be as good as Nokia say it is. Overall i give this phone 4 stars.
