Nokia
E50 Review
Phone
rating:
The Nokia E50 is not a phone apparently.
According to Nokia's website it's a "business device". It's been
designed as a kind of mobile office, but it's not a huge clunky
device like the 9500 Communicator -
it looks like a mobile phone! In fact, for a SmartPhone it's pretty
light and slim.
The E50 is intended as a lightweight
SmartPhone for the business user who's not interested in having
a camera, MP3 player, etc on their phone. There is a camera, but
it's not up to much, and is in fact optional. On the other hand,
the E50 has a good set of business functions: a good speakerphone,
voice dialling and commands, email support, web browsing and an
attachment viewer for Microsoft documents. It supports Bluetooth
2.0 wireless connectivity in addition to USB and infrared. Memory
is ample, with 70 Mbytes built-in and support for hot-swappable
memory cards. The E50 is quadband, but not 3G. However, fast downloads
via EDGE are possible, so this isn't too much of a hindrance. On
top of this, the Symbian Series 60 functionality makes this a powerful
business device. The E50 also has superb battery life.
There are, however, numerous problems
with the E50. First of all, like many Symbian SmartPhones, its user
interface is slow and the software is prone to crashing. Also, like
many of our users have commented, the font size is tiny, so it's
hard to make use of the advanced features. Given that the target
user is likely to be older than average, this is an inexcusable
design fault. The Nokia E60 is a much
better option.
If you're feeling very brave you can try increasing
the font size. Please note that this is an external link and
we do not have control over what is published on that website, nor
do we accept any responsibility for damage to your phone that may
result.
Features of the Nokia E50 include:
- Series 60 3rd Edition Symbian
SmartPhone
- 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x
digital zoom
- Video camera (176 x 144 pixels,
15 frames per second)
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colors,
240 x 320 pixels
- Music Player (MP3/AAC)
- Voice commands (name dialling
& application launching)
- Speed dialing
- Speakerphone
- Voice memo recording
- Messaging: SMS, MMS,
email (POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols)
- Attachment viewer for Microsoft
Word, PowerPoint and Excel (Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003)
- Symbian and Java™ applications
- Caller ID with image
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0,
USB & infrared
- Memory: 70 Mbytes plus support
for microSD card
- XHTML web browser
- WAP, GPRS,

- Vibration alert
- Quadband
- Size: 113 x 44 x 15.5 mm

This is strange. I was so looking forward to getting this phone,
but as soon as I ordered it from Nokia I read all the negative reviews
on this site (Most coming from the UK). But im pleased to say that
I have had no issues at all and its the best nokia I have used in
years. Great battery life, awesome screen quality (including the
fonts!).. its really speedy and mine has never once crashed! (Although
it did reset the theme once which was a tad wierd). But I really
recommend this phone to anyone that just wants a good reliable handset
without all the walkman/cybershot junk.

that i can choose from all brands and models is "The Ultimate-Nokia

100 out of 100 for its quoted price...and even it is the slimmest
smartphone in the market. And it is all for business.....but also
good for multimedia...I use more for entertainment rather than as
a business phone..its works perfect for me...and the only disapointment
is my mobile gets warm while conversation....Important thing if
you see its higher version models....its very high in price........and

Callers to my E50 keep getting echos on the line, a reset of the
phone fixes the problem for a day or two but then it's back again.
It's also very slow, crashes at least once a week and the font size
may be great for an 18 year old but useless for anyone over 40.
As a hands free option its poor, the buttons are so samll that at
night it's impossible to use.

Upside: This is a very sleek looking phone and to some extent is
packed full of some good features providing that you can apply them
to some use or other. Its got a good size and slim enough to fit
into shirt pocket. Screen size is adequate and weight is OK but
would be even lighter if it didnt have the metale casing for a back.
Downside: THIS IS MY SECOND E50 - During a conversation I get told
by many people that there is an echo on the line and usually its
the person that I am talking to telling me that they can here themselves
again. When using it with my Parrot Handfree kit in my car there
is a very loud buzzing noise that I can get rid of and it seems
intermittant. Occasionally its fine and you can hear a slight humming
sound and then other times its so loud that you have to disconnect
it from the parrot and talk into the handset. It gets warm when
talking. The software in the phone is slow sometimes especially
when your trying to navigate the phonebook and when trying to disconnect
a call it seems to hang for a short period. The mini joystick is
a bit annoying sometimes as it ends up picking the wrong option
when navigating the menu. The built in voice command option only
works when you are in the voice command option. All in all I give
it a 1. I think Nokia might want to rethink this one, Shame really.

refuse to replace this with a different model, so I keep asking
for replacements until one day they will finally agree to send me

receive text messages for days, poor font size, fails to display
caller ID. When I take the sim out and pop it back in my trusty
old 6230i, everything works perfectly. The signal is rubbish - it
can lose range even if you are in a perfect signal area sat at a
desk. I am waiting for a brand new replacement only so i can keep

good to be fair, but amongst the useless active standby mode and
the doubly useless icons you never use, the phone is more annoying
than useful. Slim, light and looks nice but if you work in a noisy
environment you better keep it tight to your body as you porbably
won't hear it ringing even at full volume. To be avoided in my opinion.

I had been waiting for a small/slim symbian (sorry... S60) phone
for years (had to stick to my old 6600 for quite a while) and then
Nokia produced the E50 finally. By far the best cell phone I ever
had. I bought it for personal use. My criteria were: Nokia, symbian,
small, good battery life, didn't care for a hi-res camera (as it
tends to add bulk, reduce battery life) as long as there's one for
the occasional snapshot/emergency. Warning to people who don't like
symbian or are into useless gadgetry: don't buy it, you'll find
something to complain about. This phone is for no-nonsense cell
phone users who know what they need. It can fit into your suit pocket
or swimtrunks, you can leave it into your jeans back pocket and
never worry about it as you slide in/out of cabs. The casing is
solid, the keys (that matter for texting/emailing) are large enough.
You don't need to pack a charger when you go away for a long weekend.
As far as the small fonts go: the res is high so it's just a matter
of getting used to it. People who complain about customizability
don't know how to use symbian. This is the smallest symbian phone
on the market right now. You can customize the look+feel/shortcuts
and download any theme you like from the web. Everything is hyperlinked,
so you seldom have to key in a number or a URL you receive via text/email,
just click on it. You can install many apps you may want (or even
write your own - thank you Nokia for the open architecture). Yes,
probably it is not the perfect fit for a business user who's used
to treos/berries/etc, but it's perfect for people who want a highly
reliable compact phone for personal use (mine has never crashed
since Oct06 when I bought it) with excellent email functionality
(and being able to read all the basic attachments) and the occasional
browsing capability (the browser - one of the 2 actually - rocks).
Forgot to mention the blinking blue light around the joystick for
missed calls/msgs: very handy when in meeting/work/quiet mode. I
really appreciated the capabilities and ease-of-use on a recent
trip to austria: I landed without prior transfer arrangement (due
to the BA strike) and the internet kiosks were not working; I dag
up an email I had received (with a couple of airport transfer links)
from my yahoo, clicked on the web site, called, driver picked me
up from airport in 15mins, found the address/phone of my hotel en
route by googling the hotel web site, cut-and-pasted the phone,
pressed the dial key and handed my E50 to the driver for detailed
directions (as I don't speak german/austrian). Easy!... and no recharge
in 3 days.

Before the E50 I had a 6310 (magnificent). The E50 is a worthy heir.
Adverse aspects: 1. With the original sw version I had 2-3 crashes
a week. After sw updating (V 06.41.3.0) no more. 2. The characters
of phone numbers, in address book, are indeed too small. 3. I have
been having the phone since december... some dust grains have entered
into the display... 4. The keys aren't really ergonomic and, during
a phone call, they often pinch the hair... Positive aspects: 1.
Good receipt (even if 6310 was slightly better) 2. Connection with
all the type peripherals always optimal (less than the pc cable
that has often problems) 3. Address book, pdf, doc, xls, note, calculator,
converter, camera (it is not a reflex... but you will well understand
the reason...) they are all really efficient. 4. Operating system
very good (tom, key-lock, games, dictionary etc etc...) 5. Vocal
assistant very good. 6. SMS Reader indeed cool 7. Management of
more e-mail boxes via web really functional (IMAP) 8. Web navigation
good 9. 70Mb of inside memory (u can do a lot of things without
any MicroSD) 10. The battery life is not comparable to 6310 (unbeatable)
but similar to the other smart-phone. 11. Houses very winning and
strong, particularly the ceramic profiles that avoid undesirable
cracks of the varnish 12. Good resolution and brightness of the
display Certainly advised

I don't really understand why people complaining about this phone?
I got the metal black version E50-2 (cameraless) and I'm extremely
satisfied. The phone is perfectly built - there's no creacks or
anything like that, the casing is very solid (it's half plastic
half metal). The OS (symbian) is stable and yes it could've been
faster in terms of responce, but for the average user it's acceptable,
and still as for the symbian phone it's one of the fastest one on
the market. The user interface is very easy to operate. Some may
complain on a thinny fonts - yest they are small, but don't listen
to them they're not "that thiny" as some of the haters suggests
- everything is easily readible. The battery life is good, but I
don't care since I charge it every night before I go to sleep and
the next day I have a fully charged phone. Anyways, the battery
life is above average and it's one of the longest lasting one from
the symbian phones. So far I have no complains about this phone.
The symbian phones rock! I can do anything I want on this phone,
I can read pdf/word/excel/powerpoint/zip documents, I can browse
web with the gorgeous browser, I can watch divx movies, I can listen
to music (the quality of sound is very good as for the phone), I
can play great symbian games, and java too! This is my device for
the next 2-3 years. Oh, and I forgot to mention - it's got very
classy looks, it is really the very good looking phone, and it looks
like a phone, not like a cheap toy packed with useless stuff that
90% of them we won't even use. I really recommned this phone! cheers

I just switched to E50 from the (unbeatable) 6310i after using it
for 4 yrs. Now I feel like an idiot, who swallowed the Nokia's marketing
Bait. On the other hand, I don't think anyone would expect from
such well positioned company as NOKIA, to issue a product like this
E50. In general its functionality I would call exactly opposite
to the one of 6310i, which was just great and user friendly. I give
two stars, because this phone is pretty good looking, light, and
has an acceptable battery life, but what is the use of it if you
cannot read the micro-, or rather nano- fonts. And the funny part
is that the screen is pretty huge. As many here say, that the font
is OK, and the ones who complain about the fons size should see
the doctor, is not really right. Try to read the micro numbers when
you are in a hurry, or when driving a car - it should be a snap
shot, not an analizys what really is written. I understand, that
changeable fonts might be a too difficult task for the E50 programm
designer, but there is already implemented pretty acceptable setup
- when you do editing a contact. This is how it should look like
when you view contacts - larger and bolder number and name, and
smaller the word "name". Why it is inverted when viewing contacts???
Large word "name", and almost illegible the real name and number.
The other thing is paging through the menus. It is not really right,
and definitelly not intuitional. WHAT A SHAME!!! NOKIA DECISION
MAKERS, PLEASE PROVIDE A SOFTWARE PATCH ASAP, TO MAKE THIS E50,
AT LEAST IN SOME DEGREE, AS GOOD AS 6310i.

the job and looks good. Two problems i like to mention with this

Where do I start ? This is just a poor and largely unusable phone
IMO. My previous phone was the excellent 6310i The keys are not
well sized or spaced, I find myself hitting more than one on a number
of occasions. Especially the menu key of "c" when I don't want to.
I can no longer text 1 handed as my fingers are too big ! I wonder
if this was designed for a 13 year old ? The joy stick is too sensitive
when trying to negotiate The font is too small and unreadable when
installed in a car kit, which means you start to lean towards it
when it rings. The solution to this is to turn on "Speak Name".
The font is unadjustable, the colour scheme cannot be switched to
black and white and the "ding" intro tune also cannot be switched
off. It takes an age to "boot", and transition between menus is
too slow. This phone fails the "Would I buy it myself?" test.

OK. This is the first Nokia phone which I feel would get close to
the 6310 business phone. It is slim and feels like a good phone
to have. The screen size is acceptable and as for the font size,
well come on guys it is a small screen after all with looks of info
on it. I do agree however an option to change the font size for
messages would be helpful. the mail issue I have with the unit is
on the M4E software. You can download the software from Nokia so
that you can sync with exchange. However nokia provide poor support
if you have a problem with it. We have issues wit hthe software
which we are trying to fix. Things like it works then stops working
making the device crash or hang. Nokia dont provide any example
of configuration or what you should have in place to make it work.
We thought the E50 was a good option, however I dont think Nokia

I for one cannot wait to get shot of it. I would drop it from a

else. The only good point is the build quality which deserves 4
stars, it would be 5 but for the useless cable connection which
never knows if it is connected or not!!!! Inexcusable. The computer
software is quite good though. The operating system in the phone
is something of a joke!!!! The phone gives no indication that you
have voice mail unread!!!! There are lots of features but these
are at the expensive of useablilty!!!! Total rubbish. The fonts
are TOO small. Only 1/3 of the screen is used as home screen!!!!
The main menu on the screen is unchangable and lacks a short cut
to messaging. Web browsing is good as full screen shown but the
Web ability with options is terrible!!!! Email is okay though. All
in all this is a pathetic attempt at a business phone. All Nokia
had to do is launch it with Windows Mobile and it would of been
5 stars but as it stands alone now totally inadequate and I will

you have installed the sim and memory card you should not have to

I am amazed at Nokia launching something like this. Whoever commissioned

Just upgrading from Nokia 3310. The E50 reminds me of Nokia 3210,
sexy yet subtle/discreet. The design is nothing fancy like the Nokia
5300. The body is made of metal (aluminium?). The camera is just
the average but mostly the pic's quality depends heavily on the
light's setting. On average, the pics contains too many noise. The
sound is average yet loud enough to be heard in the train. The keypad
and joystick is ok to me. Mind that I'm a man with average/large
fingers. I hate phones with tiny keypad. Fonts size is ok to me
yet some people nagged about it being too small. Battery life is
around 5 days (on daily basis I just sms and talk only and a couple
of fun pics). Just love the 3rd generation S60 (OS). Using Carbide.UI,
I can create my own theme :-). Only once my phone got restarted.
So far, the E50 gives me no trouble. I just wish the camera could

I'm quite pleased with Nokia, in general, but this E50 phone has
been a disappointment. My previous phone was a 6200, before that
a 3360, and before that a 6160. The UI is slow (which on a business
phone seems inexcusable), and I've had crashes and email related
bugs. It could just be a firmware issue, so I've been tracking the
firmware updates, but no update has been made for the E50 since
August or before. Seems from other posts that others are experiencing
crashes as well. The font size is indeed small, so if your eyes
aren't great you'll be disappointed. I do not know if font size
is adjustable. 1) About every 20 minutes or so of call time, the
phone sponteously reboots itself. Sometimes it reboots without warning,
other times there is a medium pitch buzzing for a few seconds first.
The rebooting is 'equal probability' over time - it does not seem
to matter whether I've been on a call for 2 minutes or 40, or if
it rebooted only a minute before. 2) The phone is unable to initiate
SMTP outbound connections using SSL/SASL to port 587, the standard
submission port for authenticated and encrypted email summissions.
As a result, I cannot send email from my phone, but only read it.
That said, I WAS able to add my company's SSL certificate to the
phone so that it would recognize our IMAP server over SSL when picking
up email to read. Pretty cool. 3) The user interface is extremely
sluggish, to the point where it's annoying. This is not a 'bug'
like the other two problems, but more of an observation. Where I
really notice it is when bringing up the list of contacts, or firing
up the calendar to make an entry. These are common tasks for me
and probably many others who use the phone. My 6200, which did have
a slow screen redraw (passive matrix), was still much faster and
more usable. If the UI libraries have had some performance tuning,
I'd be happy to try the latest when there's a fireware upgrade or
I'll install newer versions of the applications that have had some
optimization. That said, the rebooting is the bigger problem - it's
quite embarassing on conference calls, and the minute it takes to
reboot and reestablish a connection wastes everyone's time.

I originally expected great things of the E50, but some of the reviews
here had lowered my expectations. So when I first received my E50,
sure enough for the first few days of use I was disappointed. Yes,
the fonts used are painfully small - 1mm high for the telephone
numbers in the contact details. Yes, some of the buttons are too
small and awkward to use. Yes, the screen could be sharper. The
phone feels top-heavy and unbalanced - the keys are located low
down in the body of the phone making it uncomfortable to use one-handed.
Also, it uses the new Nokia charger, so all those business users
who have acquired spare Nokia chargers at home and in the office
over the years will have to buy some new ones. However, after several
weeks of use, I have to conclude that maybe it's not that bad after
all. The battery life is great, lasting 4-5 days. It's still a smartphone
that gives me access to all my emails, attachments and the internet,
with a proper browser. I've the non-camera version and it has not
suffered from software crashes or slow responses. But in the end
I still miss my E60 and would not hesitate to choose one of those
before an E50. I can't understand why the E60 is overlooked so much
in the UK and why the E50 is promoted by the UK business support
providers - you got that wrong guys! In summary, not a bad phone,

I tried to use two (2) units of this model: Nokia E50-1 (with camera)

both phones. This phone is a BIG JOKE. Consider this: The font size
on the screen is almost virtually unreadable/unusable as they are
too small!!! Was that font size 4 or 5? One is forced to squint
at the smallness of the letters! As a result, the inbox is a struggle
to scroll through. Worse, this phone has problems accessing WAP
sites and always displays 'UNSUPPORTED CONTENT TYPE.' This is the
only phone I have ever used which generates too much heat on the
earpiece after talking for 10 minutes. It was like frying my ears...literally!
I have not experienced this heating-up thing with my Sony Ericsson

is also a big joke. My cheap but durable Nokia 1100 beats this phone
in terms of loudness ten times over. I cannot hear Nokia E50 while
walking outside in public places or in the streets. Finally, the
