Nokia 8800
Sirocco Review
Phone
rating:
The
Sirocco is a Mediterranean wind that comes from the Sahara and reaches
hurricane speeds in North Africa and Southern Europe. It's also
the name that Nokia have given to the upgrade of the 8800 premium
slide phone. The original 8800 was
made with a stainless steel case and looked a million dollars. It
was an expensive and exclusive phone, designed to impress, but it
was lacking in features and had shockingly bad battery life.
The
8800 Sirocco Edition shares the same look, but comes in a choice
of black or steel, although most people will want the black version
to distinguish it from the original 8800. It's worth noting that
the case has a glossy finish that is a magnet for fingerprints.
The Sirocco is crafted from premium materials, with a stainless
steel casing and scratch-resistant sapphire-coated glass to protect
the display. The design is ergonomic with a compact keypad and a
smooth sliding action from the case. Like the original 8800, the
bottom row of keys is not that easy to use because of its proximity
to the slide. The Sirocco is slightly thicker and heavier than the
original 8800, but is a good size and weight - not too large, but
nice and substantial to hold.
Inside,
the Sirocco has had its specification upgraded. The camera has been
substantially uprated from 0.5 megapixels to 2 megapixels. The display
is the same, but is still very good in its class with 262k colours
and 208 x 208 pixels. There's a music player and an FM radio, but
don't expect the Sirocco to compete against the Nokia NSeries or
Sony Ericsson Walkman phone in the music department - that's not
what the Sirocco is for, after all. The Sirocco does support Speaker
Independent Number Dialling as well as speed dialling, and has an
integrated handsfree speaker. The 8800 Sirocco has exclusive ringtones
composed by Brian Eno and a custom user interface specially designed
for the phone. Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity is supported, fast data
transfer via EDGE, and the memory has been usefully upgraded to
128 Mbytes. The specification may not match other phone in this
price range, but it suits the target market well.
The
sales package is generous and includes a Bluetooth headset, a pouch
to protect the phone and a smart desk stand that can be used to
charge the phone and spare battery (and to show off the phone to
your colleagues!)
Disappointingly
the battery life of the Sirocco is not much better than the old
8800. It lasts a day or two at most under normal use. Still, the
Sirocco is about style first and practicality second, and as long
as you can live with its shortcomings the 8800 Sirocco is a stunningly
beautiful phone. Enjoy!
The
Sirocco has now been replaced by the Nokia
8800 Arte. You should also consider the Nokia
8600 Luna.

5M camera or 7MP or infinite MP. the fact is they will NEVER beat
a normal camera!! do you really take pictures using phone? how bright
that flash could be and how many flashes can it withstand before
running out of batteries? and i dont giv a damn if other phones
have this mp3 features. if you so concern about the features and
sound quality, get a BOSE or harman kardon or whatever audio system

Why did I get the nokia 8800 ? It`s that time of year again ,you
know upgrade time, and who wants to miss out on a free new phone,
so for the last couple of weeks I`ve been perusing the internet
and reading reviews. my criteria for a phone in priority order are.
1. got to make and recieve calls. 2. has to be small enough to fit
in my trouser pocket. 3.got to be reasonably robust. 4. got to be
bluetooth enabled. 5.has to be able to make and recieve calls in
the U.S. 6. has to be able to recieve Text messages as I subscribe
to the Spinvox service (which automaticly translates your voicemail
messages to text, thus allowing me to prioritise calls). the Nokia
8800 sirocco ticked all the boxes. the fact that it has saphire
christal glass for the display, impressed me. I`m not expecting
the phone to be totally scratchproof but the fact that it comes
with a nice leather case should help. a real bonus was the bluetooth
headset and corded ear piece accompying the phone. as far as all
the other applications are concerned eg. camera ,video currency
converter, etc. I`ve had a play around with them they are Ok but
I don`t think they will be used that much,by me. The only slight
dissapointment is it doesn`t appear to have a ring, ring tone only
ambient music but I can live with that. If truth be known I`m a
bit of a technophobe , but I managed to work my way around the phone
without too much help from the owners manual. If like me you want
a fairly basic telephone that does what it says on the box , I would
heartily recomend this phone. My understanding is that the phone
is very expensive even with contract. I very fortunately got the
phone as a free upgrade. would I have paid the price if it wasn`t
free? probably not. but that doesn`t detract from it being a wonderfull,
easy phone to use and own.

First of all its heavy, so probably only handy if carrying around
in a brief case or bag, as it weighs down your pockets and makes
a bulge in you suit jacket. Buttons take a little time to get use
to, as so closely located near one enough. Good thing though is
that you are able to get a finger print of anybody that picks the
phone up, as it has a tendancy to leave even clean dry hand marks
on the device. Good for a couple of weeks then is not really practal.
Good for taking out and showing off though.

All bow down to the first 'anti-chav' phone on the market! Designed
to only have the basic functions of a mobile phone ? make/receive
calls and texts, camera, email etc ? this fact alone will ensure
all chavs give this phone a miss, assuming the price doesn't alone...
Is this phone for you? One simple question can decide: Do you use
'txt spk' in anything else other than text messaging? If yes, move
on, there's an ugly, poorly designed plastic Samsung bundled with
useless features overe there for free. If no, this phone is for
you if you don't have fat, McDonalds fingers, don't spend all day
gassing and texting, and appreciate minimalistic, well designed
items that feel good to the touch. They say: Man, dat fone is rubbish

Bought this phone after reading all of the below reviews and am
thoroughly impressed by it. I call and infrequently text: and have
no interest in anything else. Friends tell me this isn't as good
as SonyEricson for music or Nokia 6300 for pictures. However, I
have an ipod and a digi camera, which I'm convinced most able minded
people with an interest in photo/music would invest in anyway. I
wanted a phone that looked good and felt great to hold. The slide
feature is nice touch but seems to make some the keys a bit smaller
than normal. Yet my only real complaint is that the body has such
a tendancy to pick up marks, makes it very unsightly at times!

First and foremost, this phone is all about its looks and qualitative
feel, nothing else! This is NOT for those who spend hours on a mobile,
or who want ALL the latest features; go for a Sony Ericsson if you
want that. So many people complaining about this model seem to have
done ZERO research on it. It's a compromised phone in that it looks
and feels great, yet lacks many features other new phones have.
It does mark with fingerprints as it's metal, but they wipe off
easy enough; it's heavier than most phones, which adds to its quality
feel, but you'll notice it in your pocket more; the Eno ringtones
are average at best, same as the camera (no flash), but the screen
is nice and sharp. If you've got fat fingers, don't bother with
this phone as the keypad is small, but after a while most will get
used to it. It's only got Bluetooth, no IR or even a point to connect
a cable to attach to a PC, and it takes no memory cards at all...
As for volume, the manual doesn't explain that left/right of the
navigation key adjusts it. The battery is half the size of other
phones, hence it not lasting as long. With low use, I get 3 days
out of it, but this phone is no smaller than my SE K750i, so why
it has to have a tiny battery is beyond me. It comes well equipped:
Leather carry case, smart little bluetooth headset, wired hands-free
kit, suede cloth to clean the phone, spare battery, really smart
charging cradle that also charges the spare battery at the same
time, plus manuals and CD. It's a seriously impressive bit of kit,
not aimed at teenagers who want all the latest tricks, but at others
who want quality, and who ideally don't need to be on their mobile
all day as otherwise the low capacity battery/ies will become a
pain.

I have to say, the sirocco is a very good handset. I've had it for
about 5/6 months and I have nothing to complain about. The sirocco
is quite aesthetically pleasing, but that is not the reason to have
it. My favourite feature is its compactness, most phones are getting
a bit chunkier by trying to include better features to compete with
each other, but this phone is nice and small. The phone is nice
and heavy, and feels fantastic to hold - my other phone is a SE
w850i and comparatively it feels like a cheap plastic toy. The sirocco
is solid, and will not break if you drop it. The slide mechanism
is v slick too. Features-wise, well........ No, the camera is not
that good, and the music player is v basic, and in term of features
overall, my w850i leaves my sirocco trailing in its dust (the remote
control for my MacBook is pretty neat). BUT, if you really want
to take high quality images, then invest in a *proper* camera, phone
cameras will never be as good normal digital cameras (due to their
design). When deciding to buy this, it all comes down to what you
need from a phone (and if you can manage to part with about £600).
If you want a phone that has a 3mp camera (somebody mentioned 5mp
below - insane), with a walkman music player, one that will control
your laptop, make you coffee and sing you a bedtime song, then do
not get this phone. Try one of the many sony ericssons. Mine manages
to make my bed for me in the morning, and gets me great reservations
at Dorsia. But.... if you would just like a phone, then this is
higly recommended. Its build is amazing. I just open the slide,
key in a telephone number, it dials away, and, get this - the phone
*actually* connects me... Amazing. The charging dock and extra battery
are very, very good time-saving features.

People are very strange - and when I say strange, I actually mean
sad. Looking at some of the comments below, it's obvious that a
number of people are buying this handset and trying to find reasons
to like it when really, the only thing that attracted them is the
very high price. And the only reason the price attracted them, is
because they honestly believe that having an expensive phone (for
the sake of having an expensive phone) will somehow attract other
people to them! The truth is, it's just a phone - and not a very
nice (or very useful) one either. If you really think that joining
the Sirocco "club" (as one poster below called it) will make you
a better person, then you are in desperate need of something more
in your life - and you can't buy that from Nokia. For the record,
by joining that club you're just joining the sad ranks of those
who have spent too much money on what is, quite plainly, an entirely
average phone for entirely average (but emotionally impoverished)
people.

and a 10GB memory but it has nothing like that it has a 2 megapixel
camera which most camera phones have now it doesnt have WIFI and
it certanly doesnt have a 10GB memory it has a 128MB and with out
a memory card slot i think its not a very good amount once you have
your mp3s, videos and pictures on there. as an overall its a great
phone and comes with a stunning hard wearing stain-less steel body
but for some one to pay roughly and extra £400 for this case must
be stupid. I have also research and on an ornage contract at £30
a month you stip haveto pay a further £280 for this (said to be)

Upgraded from a RAZR to 8800 Sitocco and am impressed. Back to good
old Nokia software. Looks and feels extremely well made (The RAZR
started faling to bits after about 9 months) Battery life isn't
a problem, certainly leaving Bluetooth on doesn't drain the phone
as much as previous Nokias. Camera is fine but due to the very small
aperture, shooting in low light can give rise to camera shake. Doesn't
drag down the lines of a suit jacket like other heavier phones.
The desktop stand is very impressive the way it glows at the base
when the phone is charging. Minus points would be a)it always needs
polishing, b) the charger lead is a micro connector so previous
Nokia phone chargers and car holders/chargers don't work. I don'r

problem sorted, hubby bought it for me and I LOVE IT! A couple of
valid points however, this is more a girls phone due to the the size
of the buttons, they are small. The battery life is a tad shorter
than other Nokia's I have had, saying that I am not a huge mobile
user and so not a big problem for me. Clarity on the phone is great, the

Having read all the reviews after getting this phone I have decided
to add my comments. I got this because I liked the look of it, thats
being honest, but then how many things do we get because we like
the look of them! I have an ipod for listening to music, a digital
camera to take pictures and a laptop that is in front of me all
day long to write and receive emails. So I wanted a phone to make
and receive calls, hence the Sirocco. At this it is great, you can
hear the other person on the other end clearly and they can hear
you!! However it does have its shortcomings the main one being the
batery life. I dont care that it has two bateries a company should
be able to develop a battery that lasts more than a day! I love
this phone it feels great, looks great and as a phone is great.
If you want something that will play great music, choose something
else, if you want a great camera chooose something else and if you
want to be able to use phone as PDA choose something else. However
there will be some of you that want a phone to make the odd call,
turn phone off when you go home and switch it on again to make the
odd call. For all you people this is great and this will make the
battery last! For me, well I am sending this back to where it came
and changing it for a Sony K800i, not because I dont like it or
because I need to listen to music or take great pics, but because
I can't handle having to carry a spare battery around with me because
I may use my phone more times in the day than the installed battery
will let me!!

Got this phone with a contract renewal (with money on top) and sold
it after one week. Cameras, mp3 players and other extras are all
fine in a phone, as long as the voice and text functions are reliable
and user friendly. Keys are too small for quick texting and battery
life is bad. Its too heavy and too expensive. If you have loads
of money and want to show it off and waste it, but don't care much
for a reliable and easy to use communication device then go buy

The Upside: A truly stunning looking phone that looks and feels
great. You feel like your holding a quality, well engineered piece
of kit. Clear bright screen. It is a phone, designed to send and
receive calls/SMS/MMS, all of which it does extremely well. The
downside: The battery life is not fantastic but Nokia acknowledge
this by supplying 2 batteries and a desktop charger which will charge
the phone and the spare battery simultaneously The highly polished
gloss finish may not be to everyones liking. Fingerprints! Again,
Nokia have recognised this and supply a suede cloth with the phone
as standard which removes the marks effortlessly. Conclusion: A
high quality phone that is a joy to handle and use, and does everything
well. You don't need to be a shallow fashion victim or vain to appreciate
a great product. Other reviewers bemoan the lack of features compared
to other phones that cost less. But you can pitch the same argument
with any product, you can spend £25K and get a fully loaded Ford
Mondeo or a not so feature laden BMW, but lets face it, it just
wouldn't be a Ford if the door trim didn't come off in your hands.

it costs £89.99 They both cost roughly the same to produce, but
you are paying £89.99 because you care about the brand, the name,

is good and as usaual the menu and applications are easy to use,
nokia are the best for sure in that division. Yes as usual in this
series the buttons are a bit small, but to be honest after one day
or a couple of TXTs you get used to that, to be honest if you are
sending enough txts for it to be a problem you should call the reciever,
i mean if you can afford this phone i am sure you can afford to
make the call, its got to be quicker in any case then sending a

Few concerns though, ring tones suck, very limited and the ones
