Nokia 6820
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Nokia 6820 is the size of an ordinary phone. But it's bigger on
the inside, with a full messaging keyboard. Like the 6800 and 6810,
it's described by Nokia as a "Messaging Device" rather
than a mobile phone, and is a device designed for those who need
flexible communications whilst on the move.
Out
of the trio of messaging devices (6800, 6810 and 6820), the 6820
has the most features, adding an integrated digital camera and video
recorder to its specification. The 6820 is also the most compact
of the three, and weighs in at just 100g.
We
like the Bluetooth connectivity and EDGE connection for high speed
data, and the QWERTY keyboard is a fantastic innovation, but at
the same time we are disappointed by the poor colour display and
low resolution camera, and the keyboard is not as easy to use as
it could have been. A good try from Nokia, and we look forward to
a replacement design that fixes these shortcomings - that would
be a truly outstanding mobile device. The Nokia
6822 goes some way towards this goal.
Features
of the Nokia 6820 include:
- Full integrated QWERTY keyboard
- Integrated digital camera (355 x 288 resolution)
with video recording and playback
- E-mail (Supports BlackBerry connectivity for
corporate email)
- WAP 1.2.1, GPRS
& HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data)
- EDGE high speed data
- xHTML browser
- 3.5 MB shared memory
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)
- Downloadable Java applications
- Colour display (4096 colours, 128 x 128 pixels,
8 lines of text)
- Polyphonic ringtones, plus standard ringtones
- Integrated handsfree speaker with adjustable
volume
- Voice features: voice dialing, voice commands,
voice recorder
- Predictive text input
- SMS distribution list
- Mobile chat
- Electronic wallet (protects credit card details
& passwords)
- Phonebook
- Speed dialling
- Bluetooth
- Built-in infra-red modem & Nokia cable port
- Downloadable colour wallpaper
- Screensaver
- Clock, alarm clock, calculator, currency converter,
stopwatch
- 2 games (Triple Pop & Bounce)
- Size: 107 x 47 x 20 mm
- Weight: 100g
- Battery standby: up to 10 days
- Battery talktime: up to 7 hours
- Tri band

and then bought the next one. This phone is a marvellous blend of
technology and beauty, as looked from the wonderful QWERTY keyboard.
Its too simple to use this phone for e-mails and SMS. for those
who want a simple and sexy phone, this one would be the best choice.
the only drawback is its display that hides the excellence of camera,

I've had the 6820 for 3 years now, and it's been a reliable phone.
It's simple in design, and the full QWERTY keyboard makes it great
for texting, emailing, and writing notes. But like the review says,
the colour display is quite poor, and the camera is absolutely useless.
It's also quite outdated now, and there are a lot more phones out
there that have better features and are better looking. Still, it's
a great phone, and I'd recommend it if you're looking for something
simple and easy to use. Since it's quite old, it's also relatively
cheap as well.

This is probably one of the most reliable phones ever. Nokia is
synonymous with reliable though. This phone was the most feature
rich QWERTY phone 3 years ago when I bought it and is still working
like a champ. Although todays standards for smart phones require
alot more than this has to offer, in my opinion, it was one of the
best phones designed. If you're looking for longevity, I'm sure

Considering the age of this phone, I think it's a great little thing.
More designed for messaging - which I do a lot of - and it has all
the basic applications you would expect from Nokia. I've always
loved Nokia's "Profiles". If you're looking for a phone that has
all the basics plus an awesome QWERTY keyboard for texting (also
great if you want to look like a smart little businessman/woman),
then this phone is a great choice (and is also selling for around
£50 on E-bay, bargain!). However, if you're looking to use your
phone as more of an 'entertainment centre', I'd advise Sony Ericsson
k750i or better. Overall, a great phone. Love the keypad!

the basic phones on the market. Packs a LOT for it's size. Extremely
innovative for it's time. I've used it for almost 3 years now and
love it. It's sturdy as anything too. It fell out of my pocket on

with it: the keyboard is great and helps me to write text faster.
But I think that's the only good thing about it because: it doesn't
support mp3 files, the pics's quality is very low (and so is the
video's), the sound quality for voice recorded files is very very
low and plus it doesn't have enough memory (only 3mb) so I had to
delete most of the games. In conclusion: I wish my parents would

The best phone I've ever had - and I'm comparing it to the advanced
phones of all other friends. I use an 8MP digicam, so dont really
need the low resolution cam on the phone. I have an IPOD, so dont
miss the MP3 playback option. Storing MP3 songs anyway makes phones
so slow for accessing anything!! What I love: the Keyboard...damn...it
is because of this feature that I havent exchanged my ph for other
more advanced ones over 2 years. I'm an avid texter - and it bugs
the reciever to no end when they rcv a reply within seconds of having
texted me!!! I love the keyboard - all my money spent was worth
it on this feature alone. The look - its too stylish even when closed
- even after 2 years of having bought it, compared to newer phones.
And of course, when I open the keyboard, all other phones fall by
the wayside The wallet function - its a lifesaver for me. Infrared
and bluetooth - are very receptive and good Reception - reasonably
good Battery life - very nice Games - very entertaining Other applications
- currency converter etc What I dont like: new phones have more
advanced features in personal info management and calendar options
the video quality is horrendous - so is the voice recording quality
the loudspeaker is not so hot or loud no USB port to connect to
a PC What doesnt matter: I've heard of the small screen problem
- never had a problem with that - maybe my eyes are just too good...touch
wood;-) Low memory - enough to store all my contacts and still some
more to go. I anyway take a message and contacts backup every few
days on my laptop. All in all, its been a great buy for me - has
taken care of all my phone needs. Would still not exchange it for
the newer N-series variants - the keyboard texting is impossible
to get over!!!!!

along with the navigation speed of it. another major drawback of
the phone is its tiny memory. i think it has about 3mg which is
tiny when a 1.30 video takes up 500kb. overall if you want a phone

task very well. The qwerty keybourd is good (and mine at least has
not yet fallen apart), but reception to send and recieve calls is
very poor compared with other cheaper phones on the same network.
the screen resolution and lighting arrangements are frankly ludicrous
and can be difficult to decipher even in good light. I must be a

the keyboard was a little small however I was impressed by the fact

having it on my new phone (Sony W600i) I've also found it to be
durable. It still works even having been drenched in the washer
and on several hikes, however the battery does run out quite a bit
faster now. I just unlocked the phone so I can still use it as a

I bought my Nokia 6820 six months ago and I can say it is a very
reliable phone. It performs well at all times. Once you accept that
this is not an "entertainment" phone, you cannot be disappointed
by it. Of course, the display and the camera are rather poor, but
6820 is meant for voice and data communication. I will try to describe
the good and week points from this perspective. PROS: - Wonderful
QWERTY keyboard with backlight. I write emails often and all my
friends who also need to do that envy me for it. I don't know how
I will manage without it if I decide to change my phone. - EDGE
makes the difference. It is like switching from Dial-up to cable
connection. - Very EASY ACCESS to all connectivity features. Don't
tell the police, but I manage to read my email while driving on
the highway. - Ability to pick up numbers and email addresses from
the text (from SMS, email, WAP pages) and save it or use it for
other applications. - The JOYSTICK makes the navigation very easy.
DRAWBACKS: - The email client could be much better. It doesn't download
and display basic attachments (Word), it cannot display the text
message if there is a background picture and the worst thing is
that the inbox is limited to 30 message. This is very bad if you
want your messages to stay on the server for a while, because you
will only get the 30 first. Not to mention that there is no "delete
all" option. I'm sure you know what this means :(. - The HTML browser
is useless on such a small display. - The PC connection software
that came with it does not work very well. I couldn't figure out
why. Dispite all this, Nokia 6820 is a very good phone with a lot
of other great features, like the additional applications, the address
book and the organiser. Last but not least, I think the phone looks
great and it was obviously designed for guys. Best, Dan

functions are easier on this phone than any other on the market.
Cons *The camera is dire. *Ditto the video quality. *The screen
resolution and display can also be pretty poor, v.hard to see how
much battery and/or signal you have. Had my phone for about 14 months

is added to detract from the poor quality and functionality of the
phone. In this case, although the flip out keyboard is fun for about
5 minutes, it's a mere novelty. During the 6 months that I've been
using the 6820, I found that I had extremely poor network signal.
The phone was checked out on three seperate occasions and found
to have no fault. The second issue I had was with battery life.
Having always preferred Nokia mobile phones, I know how good they
are generally where batteries are concerned. This model seems to
be an exception, requiring frequent charging, and having poor talk-time
life. This 6820 is ideal for those who only ever send texts... but
as far as a phone goes, you'd be better off with a piece of string
and a pair of yoghurt pots!

I've had this phone for over a year now, and I am 110% happy with
it. I can't imagine ever buying another phone without a Qwerty-keyboard.
I use it primarily for the calendar, I can whip the phone out of
my pocket, schedule a reminder, and have it back in my pocket within
20 secondsn. Awesome. Of course, SMS and e-mail are very easy, too.
The display may not be to good when compared with other phones,
but it does the job adequately. Camera is bad no matter how you
look at it, but that's not an issue for me. I'm not interested in
upgrading to the 6822, because that's basically the same phone with
a better camera and better LCD. Build quality is excellent, I'm
flipping mine open and closed many times a day and it still feels

Ive had this phone for around 10 months now, and all i can say is
that i still really love this phone, text messaging is super fast,
im not into the whole predictive text so id rather type it all out
and get every word accurate, and now i tap away a message without
needing to look at the keyboard which makes my texting life a hell
of a lot easier, a text would take me a little as 10 seconds to
write where as it would take me atleast 2 mins on a standard phone.
The camera quality did let me down at first, but that wasnt the
point in buying the phone. Video quality is poor to todays standards
but it does the job and is fun to record short clips of a minute
and a half of my mates around college. It is a very reliable and
sturdy phone, well built and designed, i have knocked it about alot
and it works great. But now i just think i need to move on, i can
honestly say that the keyboard design NEEDS to be incorporated into
newer phones, i was dissapointed in the colour quality, only 4k
colour screen at a price which was quiet expensive, i would love
to stay with a keyboard phone, but there just not around, and nokia's
arnt to reliable on text messaging (im sick of the "some text missing")
so i think il sell it and move back to a Samsung, and a D500 is
where im heading, overall its an awesome phone, just a little dated
now.

I have been using one of these for about 9 months (I got one as
soon as I saw it was available) and Even though I really loved it,
I can't bring myself to give it more than 3 stars. The feature set
is pretty amazing - it has a scheduler, to do list, e-mail, xHTML
browser, EDGE support, Bluetooth, IrDA and a camera! It's a shame
that so many of the features were poorly implemented. The browser
runs out of memory very quickly and it's very hard to view even
some wireless websites. The camera is shocking. The resolution is
quite low and the images are dull and washed out - worse IMHO than
the T610. The video capture is almost worthless and the quality
of the screen lets it down even further. There are also serious
issues with the reliability of the phone. It would lock up when
trying to play back some ringtones I made (AMR format) and that
keyboard... it's nicer looking than the 6800 (which I also had)
but the keys are much closer, which I found very uncomfortable.
The hinge developed a problem where you get a completely different
key to what you press (I got A when I press Z, for example) and
just before I got rid of it, the backlight on the keyboard stayed
permanently on at a low level, which sapped the battery terribly.
I can happily report that it works well in tri-band mode, and I
extensively tested it in Florida recently. This is a business class
phone with top class feautures let down only by Nokia's cost cutting.
I understand the Nokia 6822 addresses the issues with both the screen
AND the camera. I'm using a 6260 now, but if I didn't need a series
60 phone I wouldn't be upset to receive a 6822 as my next upgrade.

I was deciding between this phone and the 6230 and eventually decided
on th 6820 because of the keyboard. I use the keyboard for messaging
and email, and it works great for just entering contact info and
appointments in the calendar. Standard multi-press entry takes at
least twice as many key presses, has delays for looking for the
right character and mistakes when you miss the character you wanted.
Its much faster entering text on the 6820 and have since stopped
using my Clie. I've used the IR port to sync with Lotus Organizer
and to download ringtones and images. I have the Bluetrek G2 bluetooth
headset and it works fine. The camera stinks but I use it just to
capture portrait shots. MP3 and radio, don't care. Get the 6230
if you want these. I does have a voice recorder. Under menu->applications->extras
The joystick works great. From the main menu: up = camera, right
= calendar, down = contact list, left = text message. Also useful
for playing games and editing messages. Then there's a goto menu
on the left button that is customizable and the right quickbutton
is customizable as well. Battery life is close to what is advertised.
I tested standby time for 8 days and it still had 2 bars left. Build
quality is excellent. I've owned several Nokias and one Siemens
and this phone is very solid. The keyboard is flush and sometimes
it is difficult to open it if my hands aren't completely dry. Very
little creaking when you make calls and press the keypad. Bottom
line is, the 6820 phone is excellent. The keyboard is not a gimmick.
The keyboard has more keys than most smartphones like the palm treo,
hiptop2, and blackberry, while being more compact overall.

The qwerty keyboard seems to be such a selling point on this phone
that all other features are substandard or non-existent. The camera
is very bad. There is no radio or mp3. However I am sending this
phone back because the qwerty keyboard seems to have been made for
kids' or maybe womens' fingers. It's very difficult to reach the
tgb and yhn buttons because of the main part of the phone. Also
the only reasonable way to use it is with both hands so it's awkward
unless you are sitting down. I really don't think you could get
much quicker speeds with this than you could with predictive txting.
If all you want a phone for is to txt, use calls and you have small
fingers then it could be ideal. I'm sending it back to get a 6230

Oops! What happened Nokia? I have used Nokia mobiles for years,
so on paper this one looked the business - packed with an impressive
list of features that promised much. Alas, it failed to satisfy!
I have had the 6820 for two days now, and hate it! My previous mobile
having been a Nokia 7210, the first thing that struck me about the
6820 was the increase in size and weight(obviously to incorporate
the 'flip'). The 6820 looks and feels clunky, chunky and cheap.
The keypad (when closed) is dull, unresponsive, and almost impossible
to read with any degree of ease - the backlight function actually
makes things worse! The colour screen is poor by todays standards,
and a step backwards from what I was used to with the 7210 (and
that screen wasn't exactly great!). The 6820's joystick menu control
has little joy about it! It looks awful, like a little plastic wart,
and feels lumpy to use. (The gaps around it will only serve to gather
dust and fluff!). Now for the flip - the gim mick or attraction
of the mobile (depending on your perspective!). First, its a two
handed operation, and not smooth or comfortable at all. Once opened,
the qwerty keypad is exposed. Ta da!! Looks initially interesting,
and may (briefly) attract the curiousity of someone seated next
to you. Using the qwerty, however, is a tedious and awkward experience.
You really have two options available - hold the mobile in both
hands (like a small sandwich) and then try to type the fiddley keys
with big thumbs, or place the mobile on a flat surface to (slowly)
touch-type, in which case the left side of the keypad bops up and
down like a dying fish. There is also a dreadful situation where,
if you need to type a symbol, such as '?', you have to simultaneously
hold down a shift key while pressing the key on which your elected
symbol lies! User friendly? I think not! Also be advised that (despite
descriptions to the contrary, this mobile does NOT have a built
in radio. It does have a built in digital camera which is lamentable
as a 'feature' because it is so woefully inadequate! If you like
your photos grainy, then this is for you! The same goes for the
equally dreadful video function. In short, this phone my lure you
in by its host of listed features, but in reality it is a gimmick
driven, plodding lump of plastic, and the worst Nokia I have ever
experienced. A shocking disappoint which I intend to return without
further delay!!

This phone is amazing! The best part about this phone is when you
lend it to one of your friends to use, and the look on their face
as they discover the hidden keyboard! The Keyboard is compact and
easy to use, however you can only type with using thumbs really,
due to the size of the keyboard. The folding mechanism of the keyboard
is very strong and stable and doesn't feel as though it'll break
any time soon. As a phone the 6820 has the best reception I have
ever heard, and trust me I've heard a lot. The number pad is a good
size and easy to type in the desired number. According to my friends,
their end I sound crystal clear aswell. The phone comes with all
the nokia features you would expect, such as calender and games
etc. which are all very easy to access and easy to use. The camera
with the phone is not the best I've seen but as good as you need
in my opinion, if all you want it for is to take pictures down the
pub then it's fine. An added bonus is that you can record 90 seconds
of film using the camera which is more than you need. On the whole
this phone is excellent and well worth the money, anyone looking
