Nokia 6700 Classic Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The 6700 Classic has smart looks, a quality metal finish and a high specification, and has been one of Nokia's biggest selling mid-range phones in the second half of 2009. Top features include a-GPS, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, a music player, an FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth, HSPA and a memory card. But it isn't a reliable phone. Things to watch out for include freezing / shutting down and breakable screens.
Best buy: *Free* with free line rental from Mobiles.co.uk (Silver) or Dialaphone (Silver) or BuyMobilePhones.net (Black or Silver); or £99.95 on PAYG from Dialaphone (Silver).

Review: June 2009. Last updated November 2009.

Oh Nokia, what are you doing to us? You have produced a beautiful phone that looks and feels like it's going to be bullet proof, but then you let us down with hopeless unreliability! You are tormenting us!

The Nokia 6700 Classic is the 5 megapixel replacement for the Nokia 6500 Classic. Almost the same size as the 6500 Classic, but slightly thicker and quite a lot heavier, the 6700 feels like its been hewn from solid steel! There are few handsets that have such a quality feel as this one. It's a traditional classic-style mobile, but it doesn't look or feel like the ugly duckling, even when placed next to the latest generation of touchscreen beauties. Nokia are at their very best with this classic style of handset, and they look like they've pulled out all the stops for this one.

The keypad is flat, but very easy to use, with no mis-keyed digits. You'll be able to text quickly and easily with Nokia's tried-and-tested T9 predictive text and easy menus. The navigation button is also a joy to use. The display is the same as the one on the 6500 Classic - 16 million colours and 240 x 320 pixels, but with the size increased to 2.2 inches.

The camera has been seriously upgraded to 5 megapixels, with autofocus and an LED flash, making this above average for its class. The video camera is a decent one too, able to record at up to VGA resolution. You can also make video calls with a secondary video camera.

The phone has an MP3 player that can handle a limited number of formats, including AAC and MP3. There's also an FM radio with RDS, so you can see what station you're listening to. Sadly there is no 3.5mm audio jack on the 6700, but you can use the Nokia stereo headphones supplied, or an optional Bluetooth stereo headset. The phone can also play MP3 ringtones and video ringtones, as well as 64-voice polyphonic.

A bonus feature that not many phones in this price range currently have is assisted GPS. We should also note that the 6700 is one of the first phones to feature HSPA (a faster kind of HSDPA) giving super-fast download speeds of up to 10Mbps and uploads of 2Mbps. This is perhaps an over-specification for this kind of phone, which doesn't major on internet functionality, but we're not going to complain.

The phone is well endowed with memory: 170 MB of built-in memory, which is enough for around 40 MP3 tracks, and a microSD card slot which supports cards up to 8GB. A 1GB card is supplied in the sales package and this is enough for around 250 MP3 tracks.

Now, the 6500 Classic was plagued with problems, including poor battery life, a poor keypad and buggy software. The keypad problem has been more than adequately fixed in the 6700. Battery life has also been improved by replacing the old 830 mAh battery with a more powerful 960 mAh one, increasing the quoted standby time by approximately 50%. But the software problems still seem to be lurking. Many of our users have reported a variety of firmware errors, including freezing, switching off and worse. Also, although the metal case feels very solid, there have been reports of screens cracking, and we have witnessed this ourselves, so if you buy this phone do take care of it - it's not as robust as you might think.

Why can't Nokia get this stuff right? They are the biggest phone manufacturer in the world, and this is not some high-end smartphone. This type of product is Nokia's bread and butter and they ought to be able to get it right. Don't buy this handset unless you like to live dangerously. What to buy instead? Maybe a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or treat yourself to a Samsung Jet. If you want the features of the 6700 but you don't like touchscreen phones, you might consider the Sony Ericsson W995.

My first Nokia and what a disappointment it has been. Though the actual physical unit, i.e. the hardware, is very high quality the same cannot be said of the software. Upon buying it, literally within the first week I experienced crashes, freezes while browsing the internet, reading email or even talking. The crashes became progressively worse and, finally, the screen gave up the ghost and started flickering. Phone is with Nokia getting repaired at the moment however I never had any such problems with my trusty old Samsung E840 which gave me 3 yrs of error free operation. I'm not convinced all Nokias are bad. Not even that all 6700s are bad. But mine was/is atrocious and I'm thinking of getting rid of it and trading up to the N86.

I have owned my 6700 for 1 month and used it for less than a week, it has spent the rest of the time being repaired. It turns itself off, more often when the battery is fully charged. Cuts out in the middle of calls around every minute. Bluetooth either doesn't work or caused the phone to switch off. Nokia has returned the phone twice now claiming they couldn't find any faults. I turn it on in the shop and call the assistants phone and it drops out every minute and they send it back. It is the worst phone I have ever owned. I bought it outright and am now stuck with it. I hate you Nokia!!!

This phone looks and feels great, especially in black. The body is made of metal and the phone feels like a quality phone from the weight. Unfortunately it is far from a qualilty phone. I am currently 5 months into my contract and im on this website trying to find out about different phones as i have been through 4 6700s already. All with the same problem, they can work fine and then suddently will crash, switch off and then thats it. If you havent backed up your contacts on your sim card or your photos and music etc on your memory card they are gone forever! I have learnt this the hard way, i would like to recommend this phone but it just keeps on breaking. the first 6700 i recieved broke in the space of a day, then it was replaced and that lasted 4 months, the next replacement went within a day and the final replacement went within a week. Honestly i cannot stress enough that although the phone looks and feels like a quality item, it isnt. And i cannot stress enough that to buy this phone would be a very big mistake!

This phone looks lovely, has nice features etc. HOWEVER it froze after 3 days. I was trying to send a pic message, froze then wouldn't come back on. VERY annoying. I rang my network and the decent advisor on the end very cleverly basically told me that this is what these phones do. THANK YOU to him because if he hadn't said that I would have just ordered another one and been stuck with it. While I was talking to him I checked out these reviews and decided to go for the Nokia Musicexpress, which is a nice phone and I only read good reviews about it. In short. DONT GET THE NOKIA 6700---IT FREEZES.x

Got this phone a month ago, and i'm thrilled with it.... probably the best phone i've ever had.... everything about it is perfect: the shape and size, it's extremely classy... the processor is quite fast, the camera is amazing i'm taking wow pictures with it.... the battery life is impressive even though i thought it would an issue before i bought the phone...... it can hold up to 8 GB SD memory card which is just amazing....i was worried before buying it because of some reviews i had read here, but now after buying it, i encourage everyone to do it, i think faulty phones are just a matter of luck there's always a probability of a manufacturing defect, this shouldn't prevent you from buying a phone unless reports of such defects are really quite big in number. All in all it's an amazing phone in all aspects i encourage everyone to buy u'll enjoy everything about it.... 5 stars all the way!!!!!

I bought this phone from Nokia at the begining of October. The 1st few weeks, I had no problems whatsoever with it. Then within the last 2 weeks, it's started turning itself off when I'm in the middle of a call. Looses signal and takes ages to return. Freezes/crashes and finally tonight, froze, turned itself off and now won't turn on. Won't even power up. Right up until all these problems, it was a cracking little phone. Now, I wondering whether I did the right thing returning to Nokia after 3 years as the same old problems still seem to be here. Not very good and needs to be rectified immediately.

Mixed Feelings. I got two 6700's 8 weeks ago. Incredible physical quality. Solid as a rock........but.....there is a serious software/power problem with one of them!! As so many people above have described, the phone keeps freezing/crashing. It is extremely annoying and not remotely good enough from Nokia. This needs to be addressed immediately, and a software/firmware update released ASAP!!

This is my first NOKIA disappointment. Up to now I've always bought NOKIA (except once when I was looking for a phone that was a decent MP3 player). This phone looks good, and has some nice features, but falls woefully short in reliability. In the 5 weeks I've used this phone I've had it switch off on many occasions for no reason, including in the middle of a conversation. I've had it freeze up and lock up all the buttons to which the only fix is to remove the battery. I've also checked the NOKIA web site to see if there are fixes for these problems, but sadly my phone is up to date- so no chance of a fix. I'm hoping to get the company I purchased this phone from to refund me or replace with a better phone because I don't want such an unreliable item.

I am on my second replacement N6700 Classic and having the same problem yet again - apart from the annoyance of the flat key pads which make it easy to mistype or inadvertently send an unfinished text, the phone keeps switching itself off. There seems to be some persistent power problem with this model. I wouldn't recomment it to anyone.

I'm surprised to see so many poor reviews! i've had this phone for 10 weeks now and i am pleased with the excellent build quality and reliability. The camera isn't as good as my previous Sony Ericsson phones(ie dodgy auto focus,no proper flash and cartoon like colours) but it's adequate. I have even dropped it a couple of times and the screen is holding out, it was in a leather case though admittedly. Battery life is ok at a couple of days with moderate use. It did crash a few times when i first had it, but it was because i put in a larger memory card and i didn't copy all the original folders over accurately, so it was my own fault. About the fingerprint problem: put it in your jeans pocket without it's case... When it comes out it's gleaming again tee hee. One slight niggle is that the phone is so slim and heavy it can flick out of your hand when texting one handed. I'm struggling to think of anything else to moan about. All in all it's a good phone- BUT DON'T DROP IT x

I upgraded my Nokia 6500 slide with the 6700, the first one lasted 6 days before the screen failed. The phone was replaced and the replacement lasted a grand total of 2 days before switching itself off. The third 6700 worked fine for two weeks and my confidence began to grow when the internal GPS failed. This was the final straw and I returned the 6700 to Three and replaced it with a Sony Ericsson W995 which I must say is a phone which works fantastically. My experience of the Nokia 6700 was that the build quality is truely awful, it's ability to recieve a signal is quite poor along with the constant cleaning off of finger marks is frustrating. For the few days the 6700 did work I actually liked it as it was much improved than the 6500 slide, however because of the poor build quality I shall never choose another Nokia again.

Screen light off after 15 seconds of talk, no way to see details of the call, extremely annoying; 3. Wanted a black factory unlocked version so bought direct from Nokia. Using on O2. Battery life fine although I only use for a few calls and texts. Doesn't have the facility to select 'use 3G when needed' like the 6230i did. I leave mine on GSM. It's reluctant to hold 4 bars signal but will sit happily on 1 bar. Dropped network in a known poor area same place as my 6230i. Tried alongside a Nokia 6303 which gives one bar signal more and held the network in the same place. This is a good phone. Nokia forums complained about robotic voice dial system, but I used training system in the phone once and it is OK with bluetooth headset. Screen goes dark too quickly but this seems to be the new Nokia system. Other complaint is not being able to send a picture to an e-mail address. Not mentioned in the manual, but if you add the email address to the contact detail of the recipient, you can do it. ( Google the Nokia forum and you'll find the method outlined by me.) It will not work properly with a Honda hands-free telephone. Neither will the Nokia 6303. The phones pair ok with the system but disconnect when a call sent or received. This seems to be a widespread fault with modern Nokias. www.hondahandsfree.com Every phone has faults. I'd rather keep it and use with my Motorola bluetooth headset which is fine.

Very odd that there is such a wide range of opinions and experiences with this phone. I've had mine for four days and so far I'm delighted. Downside is that it won't sync with a Mac and the chrome version is spoilt by fingerprints and grease. I bought mine from the Carphone Warehouse. The salesman recommended it because of what he claimed to be the 6700's reliability in comparison to other phones. I had originally thought of asking at the Nokia 5800 but he told me to avoid it because they have had many returns of such. Irritating that there is no dedicated sleeve / cover for the 6700. But I suppose it wasn't designed to be covered. All in all, I like it - despite the fingerprints.

I love the Nokia 6700, excellent features and it comes highly recommended. Superb camera and video recording, clarity of calls and a sturdy quality handset. However, the one major disappointing factor is the poor battery life. I previously had the 6500 classic, and I thought its battery life was terrible, but atleast it lasted around 48 hrs before requiring charging. I would consider myself lucky if I can use the phone for more than 24 hrs without having to charge. I use my phone for calls and texting, so I'm not even using any other features. I've had the handset replaced twice by my network providers, and yet the problem prevails. I've been using Nokia handsets for years, but they need to realise that they have got to make drastic improvements when it comes to selecting long lasting batteries.

I upgraded my Nokia 6500C to the new 6700C. I have now had the phone (phones) 10 days and I am on my third handset. The phone it's self is very nice, easy to use, good screen (although it does smear bad) and very good pictures. However within 24 hours of recieving my first phone, I was suddenly not having any incoming calls, which was worrying as this is a business line. When I called my phone from a land line it just rang out, yet the mobile neither rang or recorded any missed calls. So I have no idea if I missed business or not. I rang my service provider who had a new handset there the following morning. The hand set worked very well and was a nice phone to use, for a week! I woke up in the middle of the night with a flash in the bedroom. At first I thought it could be lightening. However the phone had locked its self in camera mode and proceeded to take a picture every 90 seconds until I finally switch the handset off. On switching it back on it started normally then changed to camera mode again. By now fully awake at 3am I decided to give the phone a full factory restore, but to no avail. On contacting my service provider the following day I have now been given my third phone, which up to now (2 days) seems to be working OK. We will see. Very nice phone, but in my case having problems.

I've had this phone for just under a week now and I love it. It looks great, feels great quality in my hand, and works really well. The reason I picked this phone is because I wanted to get away from the fiddly crashing piece of plastic that are touchscreen phones, and this one does the job really well. I just wanted a phone that calls and texts, and the call quality on this is amazing compared to the Samsung Tocco which I have previously owned. The screen on this phone (although a bit smaller compared to the Tocco that I was used to) is beautifully coloured, and I love the sensor activation gadget where you can activate the clock on the screen by tapping the phone. In response to what Stu said, I have also found that I keep turning caps on by accident when texting but also am getting better with practice. I have the chrome version of this phone, so am also concerned about scratches, fingerprints etc but have bought some phone socks to hopefully keep it looking nice for as long as possible. All in all, brilliant phone from Nokia. Thumbs up.

I'm not normally someone who gets excited by a phone - make calls, send a few texts but i do like this phone! Couple of slight changes to get used to from the 6300..... firstly, no power saver screensaver, so you can't quickly look at the phone and tell if you have a text or missed call without waking the phone up .... you now don't have to exit out of the editor once you've sent a text, it goes straight back to the home screen ... apart from those two, it's business as usual from Nokia !! Took a photo and played with it in Photoshop, and it takes an expert to tell you this was from a camera with a small sensor. Surprisingly good focus too, which is a bonus as I certainly didn't get it for the camera. Satellite gets an excellent fix indoors. Maps seem ok. Very easy to text with and I am really fussy with phones, I didn't think it would be as it has a flat keypad but it is. 1 Downer with it is that it doesn't have a power saver clock mode on it like most nokia's do which is a shock so you don't know whether you have messages or missed calls etc just by looking at the screen, you have to press a button, see I told you i'm fussy. If anyone knows of a way of installing this feature please let me know at odpcarly@aol.com. It is extremely loud very good sound which is good because some nokia's can be a bit rubbish on that subject. Excellent camera as it has a 5 MP.
