Nokia 6681
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Nokia 6681 smart phone is very similar to the successful and highly-rated
Nokia 6680, except that the 6681 does
not have the 3G functionality of the 6680. The phones are the same
in most other respects.
The
exterior design of the 6681 is nearly identical to the 6680, and
the phones are the same size and very nearly the same weight. It's
not a lightweight phone, but is typical for a smartphone. The keypad
layout is very convenient and features a five-way scroll key, two
soft keys, application key, edit and clear keys, send and end keys.
The
6681 incorporates a high quality 1.3 megapixel camera (1.23 effective
megapixels) with a convenient protective slide. The camera has a
flash with a range of 1.5m and a 6x digital zoom. There is also
a video recording facility. Images can be printed directly from
the phone to a compatible printer or kiosk using Bluetooth or USB
cable, or transferred to a PC for processing. Video can be played
back in full screen mode and the video player supports both MPEG4
and 3GP formats.
The
music player supports MP3, AAC & RealAudio format tracks and
provides stero output with a pair of Nokia HDS-3 stereo headphones
provided as standard.
The
6681 is a series 60 smartphone and comes with a selection of Symbian
applications. Applications provided on the memory card include Kodak
Mobile (for printing images taken using the camera), Nokia Wireless
Keyboard application, a selection of games and a Photo Editor. Messaging
is of course fully supported, with SMS, MMS and e-mail with file
handling for attachments in jpeg, 3gp, MP3, .ppt, .doc, excel, and
.pdf format.
The
internal memory of the device is 8 Mbytes (slightly less than the
6680), with the addition of a 64 Mbyte MMC card which can be hot-swapped.
Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB.
The
6681 can also be compared to the Nokia
6670 smart phone. The 6670 is similar to the 6681, except that
the 6681 has an upgraded display, camera, EDGE connection and Push
To Talk, although it's a little heavier and battery life suffers.
We would recommend the 6681 in preference to the 6670, and overall
it's an excellent smart phone with few of the bugs and problems
encountered in earlier Nokia smart phones. Highly recommended!
Features
of the Nokia 6681 include:
- 1.3 megapixel digital camera (1280 x 960 pixels)
with flash and 6x digital zoom
- Video recorder
- Media player / music player (MP3, AAC, MPEG4,
3GP & RealMedia formats) - stereo output via headphones
- Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 176 x 208 pixels
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant
Messaging, Email
- Voice Features: voice dialing, voice commands,
voice recorder
- Speed dialing
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Push to Talk
- Polyphonic ringtones
- Java & Symbian applications
- Advanced Series 60 PIM features including calendar,
contacts, to-do list, and PIM printing
- Advanced contacts database with support for
multiple phone and email details per entry, also supports thumbnail
picture and groups
- WAP 2.0, GPRS class 10
- Fast EDGE connection
for broadband-speed browsing - up to 236.8 kbps
- XHTML/HTML multimode browser (supports image
maps, background images, and frames)
- Mobile Wallet
- Memory: 8 Mbytes internal memory plus 64 Mbytes
Reduced Size Dual Voltage MultiMediaCard (MMC)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 1.2, USB 2.0
- Triband
- Size: 108 x 55 x 21 mm
- Weight: 131g
- Talktime: up to 6 hours
- Battery standby: 6 - 11 days

I bought this model almost one year passed from today, and so far
didn't face any trouble with this model yet. I also use temporary
GPRS connection and connect with my laptop for slow and temporary

I have the 6681. when i first got it it wuz great and all. then
i placed a 1gb card in it and it started running really slowly.now
its annoying. also im a big music fanatic and this software(music
wise) doesnt do it for me. the camera is great tho for a 1.3mpix
cam. Also it has alot of support because its a nokia phone. but
these do not outweigh the hang time in almost all the applications
of the phone. Also some apps are a bit buggy. If it were faster
i would not be considering to get the SE w610i.

the software at nokia care. See pictures in image mgr. & see the
diffrence. in 7610&3230 img. r not sharper but this is due to pixels
both phones screen pixels looks like vibrating but in 6681 it is

i'm very much satisfied with my nokia 6681 performance. the system
is very flexible, and i have installed/uninstalled so many applications
without any hassle. with its 1.3mp camera, the capture is so amazing,
especially when you have bright light though the flash can help
a bit in dimmed places. data transfers via bluetooth is excellent,
too. though the size is a bit big, it just shows it's a guy thing.
sound quality is also superb. downside of this is its having no
stopwatch nor countdown so i had to find an application on the matter.
to tap all these, it is also very durable. once it fell on the ground
from about 1.5meters - the back cover was detached, the battery
was off, the memory was out.. but when i placed things back to its
place... tada!!! as if nothing happened, except of course for slight
scratches :)

This is a really bad phone. My sincere advice - Stay away! The problems
include: - Constantly hangs/ freezes up while in use or otherwise
- Automatically restarts while in use or otherwise - Keys are difficult
to press - Some functions take forever to execute - Icons and other
artifacts on the screen keep disappearing - The email application
that comes with the phone is really bad. My colleague has the same
phone which he bought a month after me; and it has the same issues.
The phone is still under warranty but I honestly think this phone's
junk and not worth the hassle of getting it fixed. I have the latest
software (v 6.09.00) and only the default applications that came
with the phone. I had a Nokia several years back which was very
good so didn't hesitate buying this last year. Their quality has
deteriorated considerably. I hope Nokia India takes notice.

good and have specs in the images. also the image is not sharp as
compared to 3230. but the only thing good about the images is that
they are in true colors as compared to 3230 which has a sharp image
but the colors are false. also the phone has a flash but nokia should
have put a bit sense and given an application to use the flash as
torch. but overall the phone is value for money. i wouldnt recommend

Hi !!! Nokia 6681 is an excellent masterpiece of a phone by Nokia,
I bought this sleek silver coloured phone about a month ago after
some research on features and Battery life. Battery life is excellent
5.5 to 6.5 hours talk time on a single charge - magic is to charge
battery when on last dot, keep light auto off on 5 sec. & switch
off screensaver (a fancy showoff feature) and avoid using blue tooth
& camera to minimum if you like to last battery time, FYI - I charged
my 6681 just 5 times in 1 month since I bought it. It's very easy
to operate, very easily got it connected with my Laptop with the
CD which came in the box and added 1GB card with mp3 songs and played
music for almost 5 hours on one charge once as a test !!! wao !!!
it's stereo headphones almost gave my ipod run for money, the sound
quality is just superb, since I've got 2 sleek 6 & 13 MP digital
cameras so this 6681 just surprised me when I used it's camera in
an emergency situation in late evening, the photos qualit y was
more than expectations with flash on auto settings. Readers I'm
not affiliated with Nokia in any ways and I've used Sony Ericsson
& Motorola cellular phones B4 switching to Nokia 6681 after I wanted
to get a PDA phone but a smaller phone, as bigger screen phone are
bulky & easier to break !!! I previously had both flip phones so
switching to non-flip heavier phone was a challange to me but the
features and battery life just mesmerised me. Another pointer is
to use input data jobs on the PC (if you've attached your Nokia
6681 to PC) and then connect phone to PC and sync them, is saves
lots of time and phone battery. All the best & thanks for reading
my personal views on my new Nokia 6681, any more seroius questions
feel free to contact me at 4mmair@gmail.com for my personal views
only. For general views contact NOKIA not me. Thanks.....

As long as you bear a few important facts in mind, this is a great
phone. I've had mine since Oct-05 Replacement for a totally under-performing
Sharp GX-30i. As with all rechargable batteries, avoid charging
the phone until the battery is completely dead. Nothing kills rechargable
batteries quicker than constant charging. To this end, buy a second
battery, and carry it with you, when the phone runs out of juice,
swap the bettery. And also get a desk-stand to charge the phone,
and the spare battery. Avoid using Bluetooth unless you need to,
and do not leave Bluetooth on 24/7 as this will affect battery life.
If your looking for an all-round device and you can't afford a seperate
PDA, phone, and MP3 player, this phone is your best bet. If you
*need* 3G features, which is extremely unlikely at this early stage,
then buy the 6680, it does everything this phone does, and has additional
3G features to boot. For some, the battery life will fall short
of their expectations, but with so many features crammed into this
phone, it's no suprise that battery life will suffer as a result
to some degree. But it's not so bad that it renders owning this
phone a problem.

Great phone, been using it for 4 months now. I had the same problem
of calling from phone’s contacts or log as Stu & Pieter. But
it only lasted a few days before I got its firmware upgraded. The
phone’s been working perfectly fine since then. The phone
is very stable; it just froze once or twice during this whole time.
The performance is superb. It can run every series60 application.
The new symbian os version also has some nice additions, especially
the new active standby function. Camera results are amazing in well
lit environments. The flash is very usable and does a great job.
Sound is satisfactory from the built in speaker, but music is much
better from the provided headset (comparable to a good quality mp3
player). The player is fine but lacks an equalizer. The phone also
has a great hot-swappable memory slot, which combined with the provided
card reader makes the phone a portable memory device. The card reader
can be used without any drivers. The three main cons I see are:
- Limited battery life (normal usage lasts about 2 days). - 262k
color Screen has no advantage and only degrades the visual performance.
- Phone memory is too limited (around 9mb) and shared. It’s
a shame that nokia released some versions of this phone with a faulty
firmware. This has given it a bad reputation. All in all, it is
a feature rich phone with good performance; it has just a few shortcomings
which restrict it from being perfect. If you’re looking for
the best GSM symbian phone from nokia and can’t afford N70,
then this is the obvious choice.

Same problem as Stu from UK. The dial button will freeze when selecting
numbers from the contacts database (or recently dialed list), and
won't dial. After switching the phone off and on, it will dial numbers
from the contacts, but after a few minutes, it will simply freeze
again. I then have to either switch the phone off and on, or dial
the numbers manually. Pain in the .... Sometimes I can switch the
speaker on during conversations...other times not. No pattern. Bluetooth
is as unpredictable as the weather. The phone has an emotional life
of its own, and will decide for ME when it wants to work! Sometimes
it will load applications...other times I have to switch the phone
off and on again before something will work. Battery life...the
figures Nokia claims are a bit far fetched. In reality it is maybe
2/3 or sometimes as low as 1/2 of the advertised times. As these
all seem to be software/OS related issues, it will be unfair to
judge the phone too harshly. A few design issues are definitely
questionable, but the general design of the phone is nice. My verdict:
If you have very tiny hands to use the keypad, an incredible memory
for phone numbers, all the patience in the world to switch the phone
off and on again several times a day, and a portable power source
to charge the battery constantly, then this is your phone. Otherwise,
keep looking.

a good price, i would surely suggest u 2 go for 6630 instead of
this, Ive personally examined both the phones, nd have also used
many Nokia phones upto now, have used 6600 which was a waste of
money, than was a proud owner of Nokia N-gage Qd, According 2 me
its the most best phone of Nokia launched upto now, though it hasnt
been a very famous phone in the market, i would surely suggest this
phone 2 people who hav a low budget a want something good, whereas
the price of Nokia 6681 is much much higher than others, whereas
Nokia 6630 has got everything same as 6681, only there is a display
difference and shape difference, though 6630 looks heaver than 6681,
it is actually lighter than 6681, as 6681 is 131g and 6630 is 127g.
In 6681 there r more colours, but u hardly come 2 know the difference,
in sound quality both r the same, both have a stereo quality sound,
If u wanna waste money, than u can surely go for 6681 wh ich is
at a much higher price than 6630, nd also the behind cover of 6681
is delicate, which looks very strong and good during some starting
months but u come 2 know about it later, ive also been repairing
many many phones upto now, have been solving both software as well
as hardware problems. Every mobile have some prob after a long time
use, but if u guys r lookin for something cheap and best ull can
surely go for Nokia N-gage QD, if u need a camera the best phone
for it is 6630 as it is also not as expensive as Nokia 6681. But
for people who wanna good phone at a good price, 6630 is the best.
And even after hearing all this if u still like 6681, wait for sometime,
Prices will surely fall. Any queries about this or u need some more
information on some other mobile phones or this mobile phone u can
freely mail me or add me to ur yahoo. My email is indianguy_18_2005@yahoo.com.
Any queries or suggestions are welcomed. Thankx.

I am currently on my 6th nokia 6681 as every one I've had has suffered
from the same problem. The contacts menu keeps freezing and wont
dial out. If I put in a number it will work but if I select a number
from the memory (phone or sim) the option to call simply doesn't
work. If I switch it off then on again it'll be fine for half hour
or so before doing it again and a new sim card made no difference.
Don't get me wrong, I do like the phone (if a little chunky) and
its features. I just can't be doing with switching it off and on
every time I want to make a call. If this problem was sorted out
I'd give it 4 out of 5 easily

6681 have outstanding camera for sure...with very good quality images....most
importantly the best thing in it is i think the hot swap for the
memory card and the screen quality...shape is not one of the best
but other wise its a ver good phone with enormous features...only
thing which is missing is radio if radio would have been added it
would have been a outstanging symbian phone....6681 is very fast
from previous symbian phones...vidoe is exellent aswell...overall
a exellent phone....

Hi All, Its the best phone available. Now considering the price u
can wait for a month for the price to go down. I read ppl complaining
that there is no infrared support. But dude, infrared is the old
technology which has been replaced by Bluetooth which is much faster
and cover more distance. The previous version of the phone do have
the problems mainly it gets hang. But the latest one with the firm
ware version V4.00.15 RM-57 is damn good. In order to chek ur firm
ware version just type *#0000* and dial. It will show your firmware
version. The old version is V3.10.6 RM-57. So chek this out before
you purchase.

This phone is damn sexy....but it is costlier than other damn thing
which is as sexy as hell-- nokia 6630. Its got everything except
a IRDa port,Radio, Flash and Lens Cover. But tell me whats the use
of IRDa when u can transfer files at greater speed via bluetooth,
radio can be purchased from a nokia shop which will add on pop port
connector and will work like antenna. For flash....with 1.3 Mp resolution
u can only get a good pic in daylight ...even higher res cams do
not work under dim lights....so using flash will help out a little
only as its range is upto 1.5 meters only. As far as lens cover
is concerned , in nokia 6681 , i m sure that it will loose by time
and will scratch the sides of phone body while slididng...more over
its cover arnt replacable...but in nokia 6630 u can replace covers.....
also itys capable of 3G ... yet it has not come in many countries....but
most of young people would actually like to use it for internet
rather than video conferencing..... so for latest mobile i refer
u to 6681....for ultimate set i refer u to 6630 and else go for
6680. kulbirsingh84@gmail.com

I acquired the Nokia 6681 on 22.06.05 and am happy with its overall
functions. The menus are easy to navigate and the Bluetooth functions
faultlessly. Connection via WAP 2.0 to the net was great. I could
read the latest web information on my service provider's site (Maxis).
Connecting to the latest PC Suite 6.5 with my Twinhead efio 112i
notebook was great. No issues like what I have read in other reviews
about programs hanging or difficulty in installing the software.
In terms of file management, all files received via bluetooth like
tones and mp3 should be accessible via other functions on the phone
(like setting the ring tone and playing mp3). I had to move the
files via PC Suite. The new sets may have some teething problems
from my reading other reviews on the Net. The Symbian OS could be
unstable or it could be the different sets were imported to different
countries in a hurry without enough quality control. My first set
had a Bluetooth problem - kept getting "cannot complete bluetooth
operation" error. Screen was a bit hazy too. All these were solved
when my retailer exchanged a new phone for me. The battery life
was great. I could get 4 days of standby time on one charge. This
is because I had the screen dim to power saving mode in 15 seconds
of usage. Phone is a bit heavy and the wrist cord is great to prevent
any accidental dropping of the phone. In terms of looks, the silver
phone is a great plus. The blue model looks a bit cheap. Pictures
taken with the camera on night mode tends to be of poor quality.
Quality didn't improve much with the flash which works only about
1.5 meters. In normal mode with full sunlight, quality is comparable
to a 1.3 digital camera. The memory card is a half size SD card
and the hot-swap slot is great so that I don't have to open the
phone to take it out. Why can't they make it a full size slot so
that I can share my mp3 and pictures with my ipaq 2210? The mp3
player plays mainly the high notes with no base and in mono mode
if played from the speaker. Doesn't auger well as a mp3 player.
In terms of phone service, Nokia should upgrade its service outlets
in Malaysia so that better service can be provided to customers.
