Nokia 6680
Review
Phone
rating:
Note: the 6680 is now obsolete. For an updated
version we recommend the Nokia
E51 from Dial-a-Phone. Check out their Nokia
E51 deals.
The
Nokia 6680 is an upgrade of the 6630,
which was Nokia's first 3G smartphone. It's a big improvement. Firstly,
the physical design of the phone has been improved. It's less distinctive
than the 6630, being squarer in shape, but the keypad is easier
to use and the whole thing is slightly smaller (albeit a few grams
heavier.)
Secondly,
the imaging capabilities of the phone have been improved in a big
way. The display is the same size as the 6630, but has been uprated
to 262k colours. It's the best screen on any Nokia phone to date.
The camera is still rated at 1.3 megapixels, but we can hardly complain
about that! It's a high quality camera with a massive 6x digital
zoom and a handy built in flash. It can't match Sony Ericsson's
K750i, but remember that this
is a phone first and a multimedia device second. A second inward-facing
camera is used for video calling, which was a function missing from
the 6630. A slide protects the camera from scratches and dust.
The
6680 has an integrated RealPlayer music & media player. RealPlayer
supports a range of formats including MP3 and AAC audio and MPEG4
video. Audio output is in stereo and a pair of Nokia HDS-3 stereo
headphones are provided as standard.
The
6680 is a series 60 smartphone and comes with a selection of Symbian
applications. Applications provided on the memory card include Adobe
Reader, Kodak Mobile (for printing images taken using the camera),
Nokia Wireless Keyboard application, a selection of games and a
Photo Editor.
As
well as being a smartphone, the 6680 is 3G compatible, making it
an ideal phone for applications requiring high-speed data transfer.
As well as the obvious video calling function, the phone is ideal
for video downloads, web browsing and email handling. Support is
provided for viewing various kinds of document attachments (view
jpeg, 3gp, MP3, .ppt, .doc, excel, and .pdf files). The web browser
is an advanced XHTML browser that can handle websites with frames,
background images, image maps and simple JavaScript.
The
internal memory of the device is 10 Mbytes, with the addition of
a 64 Mbyte MMC card which can be hot-swapped. Connectivity is via
Bluetooth or USB.
The
6680 also seems to have cured most of the reliability problems that
dogged the 6630, and we recommend it for anyone looking for a multimedia
phone with the advantages of both the Symbian operating system and
3G. Now updated by the Nokia N70.
Features
of the Nokia 6680 include:
- Two integrated digital cameras: 1.3 megapixel
in back of phone (1.23 megapixel effective resolution, 1280 x
960 pixels) with 6x digital zoom and slide for camera protection)
and VGA (640 x 480 pixels, 2x digital zoom) in front of phone
- Integrated camera flash (operating range up
to 1.5 m)
- Video camera / video calling (using VGA camera)
- Movie Director for automated video production
- Display: active matrix, 176 x 208 pixels, 262,144
colours
- RealPlayer Media Player with stereo audio -
played formats: .3gp and .mp4 file formats, MPEG-4 video, H.263
video and AMR audio, RealMedia (Real Video and Real Audio), MP3,
and AAC
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging, Email
- Voice Features: voice dialing, voice commands,
voice recorder
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Push to Talk
- Polyphonic ringtones
- Java & Symbian applications

thumbnail pictures and groups

and to-do list

maps, background images, and frames)

- Memory: 10 Mbytes internal memory plus 64 Mbytes
Reduced Size Dual Voltage MultiMediaCard (MMC)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 1.2, USB 2.0
- Triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) plus 3G (WCDMA 2100
networks)
- Size: 108 x 55 x 21 mm

I bought this phone thinking not only does it look good, it performs
just as good or even better. Well, I didn't quite get what I expected.
Despite it's eye turning appearance, the 6680 is also tainted with
irritating flaws. The 262k screen resolution is tops but whenever
I set the bright mode to mid-level, the phone suddenly lights back
up to full bright mode. That affects my eyesight. Also, the wav
files I use for my message alert tones inexplicably pause for a
couple of seconds whenever I receive an sms. The phone can get a
tad slow too. Had it been a PC, it would surely need some serious
defragging. And what I really can't get is how most of the text
messages I send tend to get deferred and needs to be sent again
through the outbox. Now that's a true hassle. Overall, this would've
been the ultimate phone. But it just has too many faults hidden
beneath its good looks.

got the phone back it had no images messages or any contacts. Within
an hour after the phone had frozen. i would advise you not to buy

I thought my Motorola E1000 was good when i first got it, you might
see a review by me on here, but that started rattling after a while.
The battery life is better...still not great, mainly because its
a 3G. The video/camera is good...although a bit difficult to figure
how to zoom at first. The other features are good, especially having
Real Player!! Fairly easy to navigate around once you get used to
it. Does seem to take a few seconds to switch on, weird. In conclusion,
a great phone but lacking a RADIO, so i'm getting the NOKIA HS-2R
HEADSET from ebay! The only complaint i do have, is the network
3, i was mis-sold a video pack by them, and they havent taken it
off me, as yet! But i did get a pretty good deal off them!

What is wrong with all you out there saying that the Nokia 6680
is no as good as a 6310i? 6230? The 6680 is the best handset on
the market without doubt. If you dont want to enter a 5 digit code
to unlock the keypad, dont have the auto lock on (even thought the
6230 is a 4 digit code i was horrorfied to hear that i had to press
another DIGIT!) To text it couldnt be easier, just press the navi
key to the left & it opens up the text screen, now once there press
type the name odf the person you want to text & press down, NOW,
type the message you want to type & send! EASY. Shorter than most
phones im sure & the same with every Sybian 60 based Nokia handset
from the 6600 up (maybe the 3650 but im not sure)! As for not being
able to view the SIM contacts & handset contacts in 1 go, all you
have to is set all contacts to 1 location & then you will have all
your contacts there! AGAIN SIMPLE! I have my 6680 on 3 & i have
had it scince it was released in the UK on 3 & i have only had the
1 handset & i have no problems with it, from the fuctionality to
the reception (& we all no that 3's reception has be questioned
in the past!!) But i have heard that if you go for a handset on
Vodafone or o2 then they bog it down with there own software which
causes conflictions on the handset (like the 6630 & 6230i on o2!)
I work in a phone shop, we sell bucket loads of 6680's & we have
no returns beacasue the handset is so good. I personaly think all
you out there saying otherwise are to picky & should remeber its
a phone! 100+ stars! A+++++++ /\/\id\/\/est/\/\ystic 2005???

I recently upgraded to this phone from a 6230 and I've had to send
it back today. It's list of features is impressive but in practice
they are not very user friendly at all. My list of complaints reads;
The auto key guard has to be taken off by entering a five digit
security code EVERY time you want to use the phone(most annoying).
The alarm can't be set to go off the same time every day it has
to be reset every day! To start writing a text to someone in your
phonebook even with this function set as one of the shortcuts, you
have to press nine buttons including taking the manual key guard
off! The bluetooth connection with my Nokia earpiece worked when
it wanted to. The V3G reception has to noted that it isn't as widespread
as normal Vodafone coverage. You can't set a reminder in your calender
with an alarm tone so how's it supposed to remind you? I didn't
realise the 6230 was such a brilliant little phone until I tried
other supposedly better models(including Sony Ericsson K 750i-very
disappointing!) I look forward to getting my 6230i tomorrow.

It's a good phone in its class, the 3G support being one of the
strong points. Weak points is the low amount of phone memory, they
should've put more in. I seem to have been lucky, the software my
phone came with doesn't give me any pesky crashes or lock-ups. It
did lock up once while transferring data from my PC, but not since.
I am curious about the Nokia N70, which is set to be 6680s successor.
That model will have more phone memory, as well as radio, something
the 6680 lacks. The N70 will also have a 2 mpx camera. The 6680
is a good 3G phone, but if you want a bit more bang for the buck,
go for the N70 instead.

Have had this device for three months, bought SIM free and used
on UK Voda. Have owned a few high end phones and am not starry eyed
about whizzy features - example is PDF viewer, great idea but made
pretty much useless by a small screen. As phones morph into little
computers, though, it's clear that it's software that makes the
difference. Love it or hate it, Symbian series 60 is a solid and
predictable platform with plenty of support and third party apps.
I particularly like being able to create/modify themes in Nokia
Theme Studio for PC. Very cool. I bought two accessories that make
the phone more useful - a Nokia BT keyboard which transforms texting
and email, and an absurdly expensive 512Mb DV RS MMC card, essential
for storing all those MP3s, recording/editing vid etc. Physically
the 6680 is well built, even handsome. I don't happen to like the
use of chrome and it can feel slippery to pick up, but that's personal.
The screen is sharp, battery life excellent, lots of connectivity
options (latest PC Suite v6.6 actually works). And I like being
able to open the camera app while keypad locked just by sliding
open the cover. Nice. Only gripe about hardware is the keypad (feel
is OK but too small) and the nav pad (too easy to hit the wrong
area). The 6680 mixes business and pleasure really well. The email
client works fine, though I don't see why Symbian don't copy MS
and have a single inbox. I'd love to see push email too, not just
polling, though I'm told Voda are working on it. The free downloadable
Opera v.8 knocks spots off the built-in WAP browser. 2G to 3G handover
works fine with voice but with GPRS it sometimes hangs when moving
out of a 3G area. Initial connection under 3G requires patience,
too. Given the appalling level of faulty handsets out there, the
reassurance of a top brand and bulletproof software counts for a
lot. Given that, the 6680 is hard to beat.

And the video calling is great fun when calling your friends. It

I first bought this phone on the "3" Network, What a mistake!! The
network coverage was appalling, had no coverage or maybe one bar
if i was lucky. The phone was so slow when i didnt even have any
apps open and it would constantly crash. So this phone had to go
back! Still hopeful...i then took the phone out with O2, and what
a relief! The phone worked perfectly, no glitches and plenty of
network coverage. The phone itself is quite slick, maybe slightly
bulky but the phone does look pretty good in real life. I must admit
i have no plans to use the video calling facility, i got the 3g
model because the 6681 might be a while and plus the 3g handset
comes in better colours. The blue keypad lights on this thing is
awesome! I was able to transfer my contacts to the phone so easily
from outlook via bluetooth, had no problems there. The only fault
with this phone i believe is its screen resolution, 176x208, the
quality of the pictures are not that good on this phone. This is
the onl y thing i miss about my old sharp gx30 handset. This phone
had top screen resolution making the pictures come out crystal clear!
If your really into phones and u like playing around with different

facing camera - being on the 3 network I thought this was a major
disadvantage but was advised to wait for the 6680 and I'm glad I
did. I'm a sucker for good quality pictures and this phone delivers.
A 1.3 megapixel camera provides some great photos and the screen's
262k colours enhances other phones' photos - a mate sent me a picture
from his 4k coloured 6610i, on his phone the picture was OK. On
the 6680 it REALLY came alive. Full marks to Nokia there. Taking
a picture is easy, just slide down the cover on the back of the
phone and you're ready. It also has an optional flash which seems
to be quite effective. I'd never used a Symbian operating system
so it took a bit of getting used to, as a lot of options are pop-ups
which aren't really a problem once you get in to them. The only
negative point about this is if you leave too many applications
open the phone can slow down or even stop but you can close them
down individually quite easily. The MP3 player is good enough and
you get a 64mb flashcard with it to compliment the phone's internal
memory or 10mb. I currently have Coldplay's X&Y album on mine and
it sounds great. The video camera is OK, just don't expect camcorder-standard
quality. The navigation of the phone comes from a 5-way D pad which
feels comfortable enough and I've had no problems using it. One
thing which is noticeably absent from the phone is an FM radio.
The 6680 may well be aimed at business people but I still think
they could have included one. Talking of business use, bluetooth
is of course built in and works very well, I had no trouble connecting
to computers, headsets and phones. The phone also has QuickWord,
a programme you can use to view Word documents. I downloaded my
CV from my email and viewed it using this programme and it came
up well. If I wanted to I could then bluetooth it to a printer or
computer for easy transfer. Very handy, in my opinion. The phone
itself seems to be well built with stainless steel strips along
the side including the cover for the memory card slot. The battery
life is pretty good although I've seen a lot better. Bear in mind
this phone has a lot of technology and this will eat up battery
power. One way to minimise the impact is to close any unused applications
by holding down the menu key for a few seconds, selecting the application
with the D pad then press C. All in all I'm very impressed with
this phone. Probably the best Nokia I've ever had with only a few
minor niggles.

I have had this phone on Orange for a few days now and I find the
Orange software great as its a lot easier to navigate to MMS and

you have applications still running. Hold down the menu key and
it will show all your applications you still have open. Select them

Most of the nokia phones work fine (like this). Are stable and get
good signal and everything works great. The only thing i hate is
their designs. Nokia phones are ugly. It seems they want to come
up with innovative designs but they make them worse. That is my
only complaint about this phones. Maybe many ppl won't care about
the shape of the phone, but i'm a designer, the outside is always
important to me. Nokia doesn't make it there. Also, most of the
times the phones are huge and heavy. Why go with Nokia when you
can get the same quality in functionality with motorola or sony
ericsson, and at the same time you get a pretty phone. Think about
it....

The 6680 looks great and I would generally recommend it. However,
it is worth going through some of the bad points for those that
are thinking of taking the plunge. 1. No automatic keypad lock.
Why? This facility is on even the most basic Nokia. I hate it when
my phone makes a call from my pocket when auto keypad lock is not
available (my 6680 has made 2 calls 'by itself' now) 2. There seems
to be no way of increasing the size of text for messaging. It's
JUST OK, but I'd like to increase the font size. 3. Even on maximum,
the earpiece volume is not high enough. When there is background
noise (e.g. in the street) it's difficult to hear

I got this phone on April 30th. Everyone knows its features so I
won't talk about it. I've had a problem with it twice. When the
memory got almosy full (less than 5MB left) it crashed while taking
a picture and I lost all the data in the image section. Had to replace
the memory card the second time. Its very good as a mp3 player with
the stereo speakers (excellent clarity) but will need a larger memory
card than the one provided. For those who are planning on buying
a new phone...... if you can wait for a couple of months then wait
for the N70. Else this is a great phone. I've read some other reviews
where people say they don't like the looks.....I don't know what
they are talking about :P....it looks real professional and sexy!
The keypad is very comfortable to use and after using the 7610 this
is a GREAT improvement! The phone is also pretty fast if you have
not stuffed it with unnecessary things. Overall a pretty good phone.

Looking for the perfect phone? Well, this is as close as you can
get. I had many, many phones in the past, but ALL of them had one
or more major niggle(s) which I couldn't live with, so I sold them
on. My last phone, the Motorola V635, didn't have a time-stamp on
missed, received and dialled calls and the battery life was pretty
poor. This phone has got it all, though. Nokia produce the best
overall phones on the market, because they care most about what
actually counts with a mobile phone - making and receiving calls.
What other make has got that excellent "beep once" and "ring
once" function? I won't go into detail, there's just too much to
talk about. If you could call them "faults" at all I can only come
up with 3 minor "inconveniences" this phone has: 1. It is a bit
on the heavy side, but you have to consider what you actually get
with this handset. 2. No radio - but it's got an excellent stereo
MP3 player. 3. Nokia has incorporated their own headset connection
so you can't go and buy a standard headset, but the one Nokia supplied
is pretty good. And that's it! All the rest is just brill, believe
me, it's just THAT good.

the display, but still its the best in the market. I was quite anxious
to test the display. Will 262 thousand colors have an impact onto
the image quality in comparison with the older Nokia models, which
had 65 thousand colors? Fortunately, I had the opportunity to directly
compare the new Nokia with the 6630 model. After a long investigation
and examining I started considering a visit to the eye doctor's
- why do I see nothing? I could not find any remarkable difference
and my final evaluation was to a big extent based on my subjective
