Nokia 6610i
Review
Phone
rating:
It
should have been a great phone - Nokia took a very popular mid-range
phone (the 6610) and updated it with
an integrated digital camera, voice commands and XHTML browser,
whilst retaining everything that was good about the 6610:
-
User-friendly keypad with 4-way scroll key
- Slimline,
lightweight phone with good battery life
- Stereo
FM radio
- Triple
band
- Java
games
- Changeable
x-press on covers
What went wrong? The problems started with the
poor quality colour display - perfectly adequate for a non-camera
phone a couple of years ago, but hopelessly inadequate for a camera
phone. Add to this the intermittent software and hardware faults
that were present in the 6610 - faults that Nokia failed to fix
in the 6610i - and increase the complexity of the device, thereby
introducing more glitches, and you have a recipe for disaster. Build
quality also seems to have gone down the pan with the 6610i. Read
the consumer reviews below to find out more ...

this phone, is great! if you are looking for something relatively
plain, simple, reliable with relatively up-to-date technology then
it is for you! the thing with this phone is that it hasnt got any
wierd designs that can easily break and is simple to navigate. the
camera actually isnt that bad! it can take really good pictures
in good conditions, i have not used the night camera yet, but it
seems to be ok! it is really stirdy and reliable. it is a classic
design that doesnt seem to tire. it is honestly a great phone for
the value. dont go comparing this to the latest £399 model
, as obviousely it will not match up. however, it is really good
for the value.

My son upgraded to this phone from his Nokia 3410,I was impressed
with the features and quality so I bought one to replace my Nokia
7210. Ok, the camera is only average but the memory allows for storage
of 100 photos+ Using the DKU-5 + Nokia PC Suite upload images to
my PC this phone becomes a very practical and versatile device.
I can only assume Nokia have improved the quality of recently made
phones as both 6610i's are performing well with no software faults
or build quality issues, and for the purchase price of £65
this has to be a great phone.

Having gone from a 6510 to a 6100 to a 3100 and now to a 6610i,
it makes me wonder what happened to nokia. i can remember looking
at a 3210 thinking "wow", picking it up and no other model coming
close to it. I got my 6510 2 years ago it has a much better design,
is quicker and more reliable, then i got the 6100 bout 18mnths ago
and that still had a real wow factor to it and apart from the bland
design was a pretty much flawless phone. Then things went wrong
with my 3100, which was appaling, blatantly the same phone in a
different cover, which literally lasted about 6mnths before becoming
irreparibly damaged, and i was hoping the 6610i would be a remedy
but so far (it is 2mnths old) i have needed the software flashing
twice, the leds cut on and off whenever they want, the speed of
the phone is appaling, i have many of the same java apps as my 61/3100
and they run appalingly slow and they are jerky. The screen is appaling,
suffering from a kind of yellow hue as is also evident in the 7250i,
which i believe is the same phone in a different cover. If this
is so then why do ppl not have these problems with the 7250i? I
recently bought a second hand 6510 for a tenner, which i intend
to use until nokia get their act together.

Why are so many of the 'reviewers' of this phone so rude to those
they don't agree with? It's clear that the problems with this phone
are not a matter of differing opinions, but of poor quality control.
My own 6610i is now back for repair at Nokia for the third time
in just two weeks (under guarantee), for precisely the same reasons
that many others have complained of: hissy distorted audio (which
came back two days after each 'repair'), and a creaking case. My
friend's 6610i, on the other hand has neither of these problems
(so far). If the current repair doesn't work (I have asked for a
circuit board change), then I shall be asking for a refund from
the telecom company that supplied it. As to the creaking case, a
purchased replacement solved most of the creaks. Unfortunately,
the case is not covered under the guarantee.

Lee from UK - and to some extent Yup as well - completely missed
the the point! Yes, being a Nokia it should be reliable. But Lee,
you've only had yours a day so how do you know? In fact this model
seems, unusually for Nokias of old, to have some serious reliability
issues; mine only took a couple of days to surface. And yes, a phone
is a phone and the camera is just a silly add-on. But that's why
the poor sound quality of the 6610i is such a stupid error - it
undermines its most basic function. You don't seem to understand
the point of this web site. But please come back when you've given
it a beating for a few days or weeks! Then your opinion will be

There nothin up with this phone i got it today after i took a sony
ericsson T630 back. ive always had nokia phones and i decided i
will try a different brand, sony ericsson and it was absolutely
pathetic in all mobile skills to say the least. To give it some
good points it came with very good games and polyphonic ringtones.
The problem i had was the phone kept freezing and getting jambed.
Im very relieved to have a nokia mobile as they are reliable and
ive had many and never had any problems. With nokia i feel as if
i can rely on it and i know when i want to make a call i can. Hey
it may not have all the mods really good pic quality. But the fact
of the matter is a mobile is to make phone calls and this phone
will do this anywhere any time without no probs. Thanx for reading

I wish I'd found this site BEFORE ordering the phone! Good info,
thanks everyone. I've had most of the problems other people have
described - poor picture quality in the camera function (may be
the screen rather than the camera, who knows?), creaky case, and
a loose connection to the keyboard lights. These might be forgiveable
if it was any good as a PHONE. You know, for making phone calls?
But the sound quality is awful, it sounds like it's overamplified
at some point; REALLY bad. So it's going back. I reckon I'll have
a browse through the reviews here before ordering a replacement...

So bad I emailed Nokia + complained. Absolutely awful is the kindest
way to describe this phone. The only reason I have refrained from
giving it the full 1 star is because it is so damn cheap. But even
at the price (around £100) it is simply not a good enough
effort from a Nokia firm that is seemingly in freefall with its
current phone range. The case creaks + groans, it feels flimsy,
the quality of the polyphonic ringtones are cr*p, the camera is
hardly worth bothering with, the radio works but without any stereo
most of the time, the battery life is severly limited, it's impossible
to see the screen when the light goes out, when making a call there
is a loud hiss in the background, the standard games are terrible.
There's probably more stuff wrong with it but the list is so long
I can't think of any more now. I was contemplating taking my phone
back to the shop thinking I had a dudd, but after reading other
reviews on here I'm guessing they're all as bad as mine. DO NOT

I was about to leave Orange but they matched the deal I was going
to get on 3G and then said I qualified for an upgrade on my phone...
Hurray! I had not researched any phones and the guy at Orange (number
one for customer sercive IMO)said he he could offer me the 6610i.
I had been using a 3100 which I was fairly happy with and he said
the transition to the new one would be easy as they were similar.
I checked this site out for the reviews after it had been ordered
and folk here are pretty much spot on. Yes its got a creaky back
cover. Keypad quality is a huge leap forward compared to my 3100
though letters and numbers are very hard to make out at night with
the backlighting. Its slightly bigger than the 3100 but feels a
lot more substantial in the hand. The camera is an utter joke. I
did not want a camera anyway but if you do forget it. FM radio is
not bad once I figured out how to use it. Orange omitted to include
it in their instruction book... You have to use the headset supplied
for it but you can switch it through to the speaker on the phone
but bizarrely only if the headset is connected. When reception is
good the radio works well but there is a snag. The headset acts
as the aerial also so you might have to make some contorted shapes
to get a good reception. Very directional sensitive. Basically the
camera and the radio are toys and if thats a major part of the game
plan in buying it then dont. One thing they omitted from this phone
compared to my 3100 is a message counter. Its easy to lose track
of how many messages you have sent especially with no counter. Of
course the phone companies will like that as it means you will spend
more money on SMS messages. One thing they have not changed since
the 3100 is the carry on after you have sent a text. You have to
delete every character of the message you just sent. Very annoying.
If you own a 3100 like me and are going to make a change then dont
buy this phone. Its got no clear advantages and as mentioned before
the camera is a waste of time and the radio has its issues. No bluetooth
either but does have infrared. I think I will probably continue
using my 3100 and sell the 6610i as when I weigh everything up the
3100 just pips it. If you just accept the 6610i as a basic phone
then its a pretty damn good phone. Its the poor quality bells and
whistles that let it down.

tiny camera moments in life that we miss because v dont normally

I like this phone. It's a good 'upgrade' for anyone who previously
had a Nokia 3310 or similar. The camera is fun, not great quality
but if you want award-winning pictures why not buy a camera? FM
Radio is of good quality sound. As with all Nokias, the interface
is very easy to use and the sound quality during calls is more good
enough for occasional users (though if you have your head glued
to the handset you may find it slightly distorted). 1 complain:
Creaky cover! This annoyed me for the first day I had it so much
I was considering returning it to the shop for a refund (it creaks
everytime you squeeze the phone to press a button because the back
isn't a precise fit). However, there is an easy way round this.
Simply take 2 tiny pieces of blu-tak (about 3mm diameter ball),
remove the cover and stick them half way down right on the edges
of the cover. Replace cover, give it a squeeze and *hopefully* no
more creaks and if you made the pieces small enough it should be
completely unnoticeable :)

on calls (unacceptable) - I returned my first phone but the replacement
is little better. The supplied ringtones are disappointing and there
isn't even a simple 'ring'. On the plus side though reception and
battery life are good, the memory is fairly generous, the speakerphone

In fairness to Nokia I should say at the start of this review that
I haven't fully tested the 6610i - this is because after handling
it (feels cheap), and turning it on (poor quality screen & icons)
I immediately arranged a swap for an Ericsson k700i. My first few
phones were Nokia and were excellent, so I ordered this one as an
upgrade without properly looking into it. However, I was very disappointed
with what I got - Nokia can't expect to compete with other phones
in this category with the 6610i - it's like they gave the job of
designing it to the office junior. Don't bother - loads better out
there.

It has brilliant quality ringtones and the radio and camera are
good, sharp quality. It is the best phone since 3210, maybe even
better. The buttons are easy to use and the many covers to it are
easily changed. I would definantly recomend it to anyone getting

the buttons have a habbit of flickering on and off!And you are unable
to send pics and ringtones ect.through infrared as you are with

I purchased one of these for my father, to replace his four year
old 3310. Oh, what a mistake. Nokia quality has clearly gone downhill
recently. The case is really poor with thin, creaky low-grade plastics
which are just like cheap aftermarket rubbish. It looks cheap too.
Call quality is substandard, with a loud whine on all calls. Shocking
really, considering the price, and how good Nokia's were in the
past. Where is this thing made?; certainly not Finland. One to avoid,
definitely, and I can't imagine it lasting anywhere near as long
as the excellent 3310. I think Nokia phones have gone to pot, personally.
I won't be recommending them again to anyone.

Having upgraded from the 3310, and requiring a much more responsive
and reliable texting interface along with more storage space, I
went, after much deliberation, for the 6610i. Having had it for
2 days now I'm in a decent position to pass judgement on it. Essentially,
for the specific aspects I wanted improvement on, it's delivered
extremely well. Messaging is robust and effective, and the storage
space of 150texts gives me freedom I feel quite privileged to have.
There were a few little teething issues but they were remedied after
some investigation. It was when receiving my first call on it that
it fell from its throne a little. Perhaps it's this particular handset,
but the audio quality through the ear-piece is hissy and tinny,
and nowhere near as loud and clear as the 3310. It's tolerable,
but it should be far better than it is. Furthermore, the ringing
volume and message receipt volume isn't as loud as I've come to
expect. Perhaps it's the switch from 'bontempi keyboard' sound the
3310's etc had, but this new polyphonic sound system, at least on
this handset, just isn't that loud. Just like the earpiece volume
really. Plus for some bizarre reason delivery reports don't arrive
accompanied by the message beep. Bit of an oversight that, in my
opinion. For general feel and looks it's pretty good, with reasonably
intuitive menus once you get used to them. The colour screen is
fairly vibrant and does its job ok, but suffers from scroll blur
when playing games. It is also quite light and rather small (Compared
to what I'm used to), so isn't obstructive while using it. Camera
quality is something I've hardly explored, but it seems to be as
acceptable in quality as an arbitrary camera in a phone of this
price would be. I also note the back-lit buttons causing diffulty
in reading them, but it's not a crippling problem. Overall it's
a good phone but seems to suffer a few fundamental drawbacks which
could, potentially, seriously hinder its value.

the buttons feel unresponsive - they don't. They feel just right,
certainly less 'clacky' than the 7250i. Others complain the covers
creak. Well, I've owned 4 previous Nokia models and this is the
price to be paid for interchangeable covers, as they ALL suffer
from this after while. BUT this is easily fixed - a small, strategically
placed blob of Blu-Tack in the right spot beneath the cover and
the phone will feel rock solid for good!

Just received my new 6610i. Going to be harsh as I'm replacing a
7650 (which I love even though it is a behemoth). Firstly the covers
are pretty ordinary. My back cover doesn't fit properly and creaks
when you are texting. Image quality is really bad, but I knew this
beforehand. Not going to use the camera much, especially as there
is no option to transfer pics via infrared to my laptop! Keyboard
is a bit tacky and the keys seem to wander around a bit. It is almost
like a fake Nokia quality-wise (not price-wise though). On the upside
I like the size of the thing after the 7650. Haven't bothered with
the radio, games, etc. I think I would have been better off getting
a 6100 and saved the extra cash. Have a sneaking suspicion that
I will be returning my simm card to the 7650 even though the old
girl requires a charge every day and a half!

It's nice phone but has some lacks. 1st, creaky case when typing
sms. (if you behave, it won't bother you ;) 2nd, don't count on
camera, it's for fun, the pictures taken don't have high quality,
but ok to be viewed on phone's screen Menu speed is a bit low but
they or in logically organised as many other Nokia phones. Screen
is very bright and sharp in comparison to my old Nokia 6100. FM
radio quality is good. it's an interesing idea to have a redio in
a mobile phone! it has 20 tunable channels. The memory pool is large
enough to download many applications from internet (I use kazaa
to download Java games) you can find many interesting games for
your phone, the one I love is prince of persia ;) The signal reception
is good, but sometimes I hear a hiss sound from earphone, weird.
The phone is light and very handy. the only probelm is the volume
key which is very difficult to press. but it's not used frequently.
6610i has a stereo headset (included in package) which must be connected
in order to listen to radio (cause it functions as an antenna for
FM reception) you can also listen to radio through the loudspeaker.
in phone book it's possible to assign a portrait to each contact
and it will be displayed when the contact calls you. But be aware
if you need a camera, go and buy a camera,I have bought 6610i because
of it's larger memory compared to 6610, not because of it's camera.
It's stylish and I give total 4 stars to this phone and I love it.
