Nokia 6600 Review

Phone rating:

The Nokia 6600 phone features advanced imaging features, including a bright 65,536-colour TFT display and a camera equipped with digital zoom (640 x 480 pixel resolution; standard, portrait, and night modes; 2x digital zoom; self-timer).

These complement a built-in video recorder (picture size 176x144 or 128x96; audio on/off; 2x digital zoom) and a RealOne player for playback and streaming of 3GPP-compatible and RealMedia video clips. Multimedia functions are enhanced by templates for MMS messages and a Media Gallery for organizing digital content captured or downloaded with the phone.

Sharing the Symbian operating system of the older 3650 and 7650, the Nokia 6600 offers the functionality of a "smart" phone in a (slightly) less bulky design, with the benefit of extra memory for all those applications you'll want to install. This is without doubt a very highly specified phone, with the potential to enhance its capabilities further with downloadable applications.

Features of the Nokia 6600 include:

  • Active matrix TFT display with 65,536 colours (176 x 208 pixels)
  • Integrated digital camera with zoom
  • Video recorder with audio support
  • Streaming video and audio
  • Graphical user interface with selectable themes
  • 5-way joystick navigation
  • Multimedia messaging
  • Email
  • XHTML browser
  • GPRS (40.2Kbps), HSCSD (43.2Kbps)
  • Symbian Operating System 7.0s
  • Downloadable Java™ MIDP 2.0 applications & Symbian applications
  • Wireless connectivity with Bluetooth and infrared
  • 6 MB internal memory
  • Memory card slot for additional user memory and applications
  • Polyphonic ringtones
  • Local synchronization of contacts & calendar to PC using PC Suite Remote
  • Over-the-air synchronization with SyncML
  • Voice features: voice dialing, voice commands, voice recorder, integrated handsfree speaker
  • Tri-band
  • Standby time: 150 - 240 hours
  • Talktime: 2 - 4 hours
  • Weight: 122 g
  • Size: 109 x 58 x 24 mm

This is truly the best smartphone in the market so far. The basics are solid - good GSM tri-band antenna performance, built-in Handsfree speaker, large keymat for comfortable texting and a beautiful large 64K colour display. The camera is really easy to use for quick snaps. You can synchronize with your Outlook so you don't need to carry a PDA anymore. The user interface is easy to use with the joystick and nice graphics. You can add in extra applications to suit your needs. It comes with a 32MB MMC Memory card in the sales box.

Its just the best phone I have had so far! Only little problem I have found so far is the famous bluetooth problem but there r plenty sites where you can find the fix for that. And people stop complaining about no mp3 because mine is playing it pretty good now with "ultramp3". Its not perfect because the speaker isnt that good but its better than nothing. So buy it and have fun with it!

I've used many phones before but the Nokia 6600 just puts them back in their places. I've used this phone for 2 months and it's just excellent. The downloadable applications are just beyond belief and the phone's imaging features are just outstanding. For those of you who had problems with their MMS just like me, just enter the gateway IP address in the Proxy Server Address field and enter the Proxy Port No which you can get from your operator (mine is 8080 and yours probably too). Doing this, you should be able to enjoy the fantastic features of Nokia best phone to date!

ive bought my 6600 barely a month ago. ive noticed that it takes a long time to start-up when you switch on the phone. also, there's a one second delay every time you push a button (ex. opening the menu). AND MOST OF ALL!!! My mobile is busted!!! one time i was sending a TexT Message, the 'memory full - delete some file' popped-up. i unwittingly switched-off the phone. when i switched it ON, it hanged! only the nokia logo appeared, and after an eternity, it dissappeared, leaving only the white background. right now im holding a very expensive TORCH.

This is just to help the below with the problem of short vids!!: I have a 7650, and as bluetooth on that does not support audio I am looking at a 6600... A few problems i've herd tho 1. Get horizontal lines when taking pics 2. Bk light goes out quickly and there is no way to change it 3. The vids don't last very long. 1 and 2, well... bummer... but 3.... (not tested) I have a disk full of apps n games from my 7650 which I have been assured that most of which will work with the 6600... amongst these include an uprated vid corder app which basically records untill the memory caution appears on my 7650... I see no reason why this can not be loaded onto the 6600 apart from the zoom. Hope this may be of use to someone! Oski.

Nice phone...excellent pictures and colours. Pictures taken with camera are nice and they look good in computer screen too(made larger). Of course they aren´t very sharp, but quite good however. Easy to use, as Nokia phones all are and like the navigation button. Suitable size. Quite slow, but doesn´t bother.

The Nokia 6600 is a great phone with functionality packed to the top. A large colour screen at high resolution. Exceptionally good quality built-in camera with 2X Optical zoom. Includes most functions offered by a hand held PDA. User friendly interface (A Nokia Speciality). Customizable fields in the contacts phone book to add or remove exta details. Web browsing is enjoyable due to the large screen. Bluetooth enabled and sync with PC is no problem and there is no need for data cable. Easily recognises other devices via Bluetooth (tried with PC, Sony6110 & XDA) Speaker phone facility is ver handy. If that was not enough it also records videos and playback is very good. Videos can be stored on the provided memory card (32Mb) however that can later be upgraded to up to 1Gb. hours of fun. Some good games available such as PinBall & good old (or New) Snake. If you are use to tiny phones such as Nokia 8310 or Semines SL55 then you will find this phone a hand full i.e. in size but you get use to it after a while. Its not that much heavier weighing at 125g. Overall a great phone especially if you need to sync with PC contact and keep track of your appointments etc.

There are few features that are lacking on this particular model (Nokia 6600) The ringtone is too soft to be heard. E.g. while placing phone on the front shirt pocket without blocking the loudspeaker, when the phone rings, the ringtone hardly heard. The phone only display the last timing (for received, missed and called timings). E.g. if you have 10 missed call, it will just display the timing of the last missed call. No chinese software is installed. No auto-keypad lock compare to Nokia 6510. Please think twice when getting this phone. Suppose nobody would like to constantly check on his or her phone for missed called due to soft ringtone.

I have had this mbl for like 2 months now i have had no probs wid it. Although it is waisted with me - as i dont use all the features, it's nice to have the option though!!! I do find sometimes that it takes a hell of a looong time to start, and sometimes when i switch between options, it takes a while to load. The fact that the keys are placed at the lower end of the mbl makes it difficult to txt a message coz the bulky part of it is at the top and u r unable to get a solid/stable hold. It's bulky lookin thing but suave non the less. It is definately a biz-mans phone. Thumbs up to Nokia for this one (though i much rather prefer my 7250!)

After having the Nokia 7650 for roundabout one year i felt it was time for a change, and boy was it worth it!! The Nokia 7650 was a great phone but this baby the Nokia 6600 destroys them all. I had ordered it without even laying my hands on one,i had just seen the pics on the web and instanly liked the new design. I must admit the size worried me but when you take this beauty from the box it is amazing how much smaller it looks compared to the 7650 and the design is fine. The features are excellent and very similiar to the 7650 so if you could work one of them there wont be a problem. The bright 65k colour is a joy in its self with taking pictures, video or even just getting yourself round the menus. What has impressed me is the Nokia 6600 pc suite software, again very similiar to the 7650 software but this time around it comes with file transfer which will allow you to grab a mp3 of your pc put it through the file transfer which will convert it so you can send to your phone when you are bluetooth enabled, and the result well its only mono but a real true tone blasts out of your handset, great for ringtones and sms alerts!!! I could write all day about this phone,Excellent.

I bought the Nokia 6600 after using the Nokia 6610 for about 10 months. My second Nokia after about 3 years of Motorola. the 6600 is indeed a good phone but very lacking in its features as stated in the physical phone itself. (1) Polyphonic Tones are limited (2) True Tones are also limited (3) Games are also extremely slow to be released. Apart from these 3 features, all rest seem ok. Screen size is good but the text wordings are much too small and Nokia should provide an upgrade in the software to enlarge the text/font size. If anyone has any further comments and/or recommedations as to where I could download Polyphonic/True Tones/Games, just drop me an email: leedes2002@yahoo.com.sg

Okay, some history first. Being a long time user of palm pda's and using a handspring Treo 180G for about a year I had to switch. Why do you ask. Simple, my Treo 180G more or less died on me for the third time in a year and I saw no use to get another refurbished Treo which would probably last me for about 3 months. The Treo 600 was tempting espacially since syncing with my mac is a must (contacts and calendar) but the price is too stepp in my humble opinion so alternatives where asked for... Sony Ericsson P800, P900? Too much to pay for and then I more or less stumbled upon the Nokia 6600. I seemed to have all I needed in a replacement for my Treo: Agenda, contacts, email and wireless internet through GPRS and for a nice price... So I did it more than a week ago and I can't say I regret it. The phone is great and even the pda functionality is (after a short adjustment curve coming from a palm based device) great. The phone is simple to use, great handsfree (I use handsfree in my car), looks good (important to me being a designer) and syncs great with my mac even though not officially supported. All my email addresses work without any problems, browsing the internet is solid and reasonably fast and the phone itself works outstanding with 4 days average use/standby and holding a signal where my Treo and even my old (but very reliable) Siemens M35i loses it! Could I ask for more. No, I didn't even ask for it but got a reasonable phone camera in the deal. Nothing special compared to a real digital camera (use a Canon 300D) but compared to several other phonecams it is pretty good. So anything wrong with it. To me, no! Or it must be the first scratch on the screen, only visible when the screen backlight is off. To me this phone is highly recommended. The price is right, the phone works great and the rest too. Who could ask for more?

Read this guys review, which is really very very good, it's for the 3650 but for the most part it applies to the 6600, e.g. mp3 player, what emulators, a patch for audio and video recording, a program that allows you to record as long as you want etc. 337 out of 344 people found this review helpful http://www.mobiledia.com/specs/review18-12819.html

Stylish Huh ? 8. I could go on......... Only Weakness: 1. No radio or mp3 However, I think it should do well against the other cellphones in the market. YET ANOTHER NOKIA which is filled to the brim with features and still presents itself in a very organised way with a helluva user-friendly interface. And what pleases me the most is that Nokia has finally "ventured out" into the world of crisp, brilliant and sharp 65K displays, sorely missing on all it's previous camera phones, like the 7250, 7250i, 7650 and 3650 (may be wrong but i think the 3200 and 6220 come with 4096'ers too). 6600........Yet another winner from Nokia !! BAD: no radio, no mp3 player, bad camera (only 0.3 megapixel),not possible to download headers only in email, bulky and "plastic feel", no protection for the large screen. However, it is an OK phone but I prefer clamshell phones as they protect the coluor screens from scratches! I would like to even see a small inbuilt "lid" that protects the camera lense on phones. A very intresting phone that comes out in january-februry is the Sharp GX30. I only hope that they include bluetooth this time!

Listen to this review. While you are at the phone shop drooling over the new possibilities that this phone will bring take my advice - STOP! Run away! Do not purchase this phone! I have recently bought this phone because it seemed to be the perfect phone out at the mo' apart from the P900 of course. I have now had the phone for 3 days and i have seen so many programming errors on this phone. It is not a faulty handset! The software is just not ready to be released yet, a typical act from Nokia to release a phone that has not properly been tested. An example of a few of the bugs: when i tried viewing an MMS that i had put together the video footage kept flashing and slowed down almost to a halt at the end. I recieved a text message from a friend, i opened it and a picture of my girlfriend quickly flashed on the screen as the SMS opened. The picture had nothing to do with the SMS i recieved. Sometimes i can record 10secs of video as advertised, other times i can record 12, rarely i have recorded 18 secs. Each menu function does not return to the beggining of the menu so it is still taking up memory and when you take sound or video an error pops up - Not enough memory! Take my advice - i know. WAIT 4 THE UPGRADE

If they would do so, I may be able to make some kind of decision of whether this telephone is worthy of purchase. Such sentences as "I wud g this fone a muda cos iit a swt u r going to luv da sc cos it a gr8 site ov da it a foo." mean very little to me.

This phone is weak. It is an unprepared product, that hangs intermittently. Startup takes more than 20 seconds, and sometimes prompts erroneous message about a working SIM card being faulty. When you enter any sub program, you have to exit step by step, and if you don't, the program is still deemed open, and memory is held. When that happens, you try recording voice / video, it prompts memory insufficient. You can't back up downloaded ring tones, pictures etc to the memory card, which defeats the purpose of having a backup memory card. The top half metal surrounding of the digi camera lens loosens within DAYS! While talking on the phone, and an sms is received, the message alert will blast into your ears. The smart phone is not that smart after all! The "pencil" button at the left panel of the phone is relatively redundant, derived quality of photos taken is not much different from ericsson P800 (with the latter having a lower pixel-configuration), which I regretted giving up the ericsson phone. Overall, for a phone of this price and capability, it will never be a good value for money investment. Wait for the software update, and perhaps, at least, we can have a normal, and not smarter phone. Very dissappointed! PS: Infrared red port transmission to another Nokia phone (6100 to be exact), does not function. Vibration alert while in silent mode is intermittent, and sometimes, no vibration at all. Wonder if Nokia is socially responsible to look into this and rectify the fault. In sum, if the phone is not ready, DON'T LAUNCH IT!

I have been using the 8210. Purchased the 6600 a week back. Good phone with bluetooth, Calendar and contacts. Can SYNC with my Outloook 2003. Setting reminders for the To Do list is missing. This is something which is required. Ringtones provided are not good enough but you can use any MIDI/WAV files from your PC. It is as simple as file copy. I was expecting Nokia to provide recurring morning wakeup alarm which is not available in any of the Nokia phones as yet.

Bought 5th of november 2003 (yymmdd 031105) in Helsinki Finland netto 570 euro (taxes included). I have now more than 2 weeks using ecperience of Nokia 6600 and I find it quite good piece of a phone. I recommend it to everybody. Good: To have all in one package is very very nice thing...camera, recorder, videorecorder, file storage, gprs, gps option,bluetooth...you can make new software with java: even turn your phone a tv-remotecontroller!! (infrared) Easy to use: windows like operating system is easy to learn. Multiple programs can be running at the same time and it really seems to work. Photo quality much better than other phones I have seen. Also possible to take photos in very poor light, but the photos will have some strange extra spots in the shots. All the functions really work and are easy to use. Bluetooth etc. work...(the nokia pc suite doesn't!) Bad: Video shootage is very short 9sec. and the quality also is very low..can be used for "talking heads" shots maybe a good add on anyway. Has jammed twice: 1rst when I changed the language from finnish to english. Had to "boot/restart" it. Yes..it's a small computer actually. 2nd time it jammed when I used bluetooth and did something extra on the background. Buttons are too small (I have "sausage fingers") and especially the use of cancel button causes constant errors: I tend to press the screens down-right side button rather than the c button. A bit unlogical lovcation or use of the c button. Nokia PC suite is piece of crap. In short: "This is a nice new toy for big boys"

I've had this phone for 2 weeks. There's no doubt it's a good phone. I've recently had sharp gx20, panasonic x70 and SE T610. There's no doubt the gx20 is the best camera phone with best display but unfortunately no bluetooth and no calender reminder function that's standard on nokias (it's the fact there's no reminder function that i sent it back). It's also worth mentioning that although the picture+display is suberb (it really does knock the socks of all other displays-make sure you have a look in any vodaphone shop) you do need a slightly steady hand or else image will blur (not a major problem though) (they've conveniently put all there gx20 in the vodaphone shop in steady holding devices) saying that after trying all of above the gx20 really has a good display to impress people. The panasonic x70 has reasonable functions but a very poor camera. The display is OK if you get sent a good quality picture or download, but to be honest there's no real point having a camera on it if you ask me. SE T710 has a slightly better camera but not much. I personally would go for it over the x70 but it's certainly not up there with the latest phones now, although it still looks pretty cool. the nokia 6600 is good. Camera is not as good as sharp but then nothing is. Saying that it's much better than SE T610 and X70 and it allow you to zoom and enlarge picture. I don't know what the siemens SX1 will be like but to honest I'm very happy and will be keeping this phone after a long and lengthy search for the perfect camera phone (which doesn't exist by the way). I haven't used motorola but nokia are better than the others i've tried.

Amazing phone with plenty of bells and whistles. My only gripes are with the Video and Voice Recorders. The Video Recorder is limited so that you cannot record a file larger than 100K (about 10 seconds). The Voice Recorder is also limited to 1 minute. My opinion, this was a very dumb move on the part of Nokia. The Sony Ericsson T616 allows you to record Voice Recordings for as long as you have memory available. I was planning on using my 6600 for recording meetings and other things like that... but I guess I won't be doing that because of the 1-minute limitation. Does anyone know of a way to turn off these limitations (Maybe a hack)? Is Nokia planning on releasing a Firmware upgrade?

The phone is great! Very nice screen at 65k. What's best is the MMC slot and the conventianal keypad. Sound is good, thinking aside that it's still mono. Camera is okay like the 3650. Battery life is better than of the 7650. It's a little fat and flat, compared to nokia's other phone lines. Software still has little bugs. MOst 3650 & 7650 apps is not yet compatible with it. Some of the 6600's released here in the Philippines has those dead/flickering pixel (on the lower left of the LCD). Dealers are recalling them back. The battery cover (rose color, I'm not sure about the silver one) gets scratch easily. Even if u rub it with ur finger the paint easily wears off. Still, this phone is great. A little software upgrade and a new battery cover, the phone will be great again.

ANY OF YOU OUT THERE THAT HAS "PROBLEMS WITH TRANSFERRING PICTURES AND RING TONES TO YOUR PHONE (ANY THAT TAKE AN MMC OR SD CARD ie SHARP GX30/i NOKIA 6600 & 7230) TAKE NOTE!!!! Y O U D O N T N E E D THE PHONE MANUFACTURERS' PHONE "DATA MANAGEMENT SUITE". THE EEEESIEST WAY OF DOING IT IS GO TO A PC COMPONENTS SUPPLIER (PC-WORLD ETC) AND PAY, O N L Y £15 (ish) TO GET A MEMORY CARD "READER" (THERE IS ONE THAT READS SD & MMC ALL IN ONE). THEN PLUG INTO YOUR PC (USE THE MEM CARD DRIVERS IF NEEDED, BUT MILLENIUM/2000 & XP USERS DONT NEED THEM), AND HEY PRESTO! USE IT LIKE A FLOPPY DRIVE/ADDITIONAL DRIVE!! JUST COPY/CUT AND PASTE FILES BACK AND FORTH USING EXPLORE MY COMPUTER ETC.. *** NOTE-if the phone FORMATS the memory card with folders then DONT delete them as the phone WONT recognise whats gone on (if you do, you'll need to let the phone re-format it to its way of formating and then start again) *** THIS IS GREAT TO RECORD (USING WINDOWS "SOUND RECORDER") UPTO 30 SECOND SAMPLES (IN WAV FORMAT) OFF A N Y OF YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC CD TO BE USED AS A RING TONE!!! (AHEM, COPYRIGHT ERM, APPLIES);-).. NOTE - WAV format sounds are quite big in data size, so anything more than 30 seconds in length can be hazardous to your mem cards' space!! ;-) THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE PHONES THAT CAN USE MP3 TRACKS AS RINGTONES (SUCH AS NOKIA 6230) USE THIS FORMAT AS THEY SAVE A LOT OF SPACE... THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO TRANSFER FILES TO YOUR BUILT IN MP3 PLAYER TOO!! IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS, OR HAS BOUGHT A MEMORY CARD READER AND FINDS SOME DIFFICULTY IN TRANSFERRING THEIR PICS/SOUNDS TO AND FROM THEIR PHONE THEN I'LL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP OUT IF I CAN... MY E-MAIL ADDRESS IS paulgrahamsimpson@hotmail.com HAVE FUN, ENJOY! ;-) PS 6600 a damn good phone, only downside is it SHOULD have had a built in MP3 player. I bought the "Gravity" MP3 player form the Nokia software website and it doesn't play ANY MP3's correctly, it sounds like a Sinclair ZX Spectrum trying to play Eminem!! So my next phone will be the 6630 (after i've tried the MP3 player on it), and if its no good, then i'll go to the GX30i (had the use of a GX30 for a too short a time and it to was a damn good phone..
